- www.pointblanko... - We were very excited to welcome to the Point Blank studios DJ, producer and founder of dirtybird Records, Claude VonStroke.
Claude signed up for his first online Ableton Live course with Point Blank back in late 2010 aiming to master the DAW in double-quick time, having previously used predominantly Reason and Cubase. He enjoyed his experience so much that he has since taken two more online courses and even got his dirtybird label buddies J.Phlip and the Martin Brothers to do the same.
The tables turned in this session as it was time for Claude to show us some of his top production tips! Claude gives an exclusive behind the scenes look at his track, Le Fantome in Ableton Live.

Fantastic question and even more fantastic quote in the answer given starting at 47:23 on the topic of what to do when you get stuck, "Almost every good track that I ever did is just like a failure track that turned into a good track."
Very down-to-earth, laid back and relatable guy giving great answers throughout!
I really like this guy and enjoyed watching this masterclass... thanks for the upload.
Claude is a cool instructor! i must admit this is another great vid by Point Blank! He is so down to earth and admits to all his quirky and experimental methods to create greatness. He also admits that he didnt know something himself until he actually tried it. He likes to break rules and is not biased at all of which DAW will work for him or someone else. I bet he would be great to hang with. I will also admit that i dont own any of his work, but i will from now on. MAD RESPECT!!!!
Masterclass with Cajmere A.K.A Green Velvet. Big Thanks!
Kaskade masterclass please that dude has been around forever and his sound design and production are always world class!
What a genuine nice, relaxed dude. this was really helpful thank you! I'd love to see Nicolas Jaar on Point Blank
Hi, you can keep up to date with news of all the masterclasses via our facebook page here facebook[dot]com[slash]pointblankcollege
The next one is with UK bass producer Foamo on 24th Sep 2012
thank you for giving us a chance to see how the "pro" are working in the studio, would also be fantastic to see how those guys are mixing and mastering
Would like to see Justin Martin!
Александр Борисов 100% Agree! More than any other producer, I’d like to see Justin’s files and process
would make my life complete if you could get Nicole Moudaber to do a masterclass!!!
I want to see Prydz do a masterclass video
seems like such a nice guy
Thank you sooo much for this Point Blank and Claude VonStroke! I learned a lot and can't wait to start my next track using these new production techniques and workflow. Much love
Love that vocal trick with the ping-pong. Some real gems in here.
top bloke, met him at cafe mambo, legend
What a fantastic video. Thanks so much for putting this up. fantastic.
Seems like a really down to earth guy. Big up for hosting him!
It's so awesome to see some one so down to earth making such amazing music. Please adopt me Claude....................
One of the best tutorials at piontblank!! thanks guys!
0:45 - 0:56 Claude triping)
xaxax
Yes it will be up in the next couple of weeks :)
Great tips i'm grabbing in this masterclass, thanks pb and Claude!
I love the bit in this where Gordon Ramsey smells that French cheese, brie I think it is. Then he gushes out with "oh Jamie, where did we go wrong?" and there's a little tear in Gordons sky blues.
Mike Green love that part too mike
That dude is so cool, chill and relax explaining is stuff. Nice discovering.
EATS EVERYTHING! You need this guy in the studio
How can you NOT love Claude!!!!
Nice masterclass. I would love to see Robert Babicz :)
Great sample selector technique , thanks CVS!
massive knowledge inside this one...def. some advanced stuff in it but real helpful for any producer!
I feel him on the doubling sub bass i always use unison when i make them just to phatten it up
John Gorgis signature haha
that milisecond control as a sidechain trick was cool
it depends wether the bass is playing exact the same sound twice or not. In this case it is not the EXACT copy if you look close. so there are some frequencies overlapping which causes a natural compression effect.
i feel so much smarter. good vibes! :)
Have you checked out our recent 'In The Studio With...' sessions? Both of the last two featutred Logic as did our recent Masterclass with Milton Jackson
Would like to see Popof!
And Chaim, Bigger Than Jesus, Rekleiner, Dusky, Justin Martin.
great tutorial. I'd really like to see a masterclass with Scuba.
you should always keep you bass central mate.. and put mono utilty as club systems are usually mono and keeps it punchy .
The vocals on this track sound so much like Curtis Mayfield's Pusherman. And that ain't a bad thing.
I do the same thing as well. I'll listen to a track in the car to decide if it's gonna work or not haha.
Tnx for upload, im subscribing NOW :) I liked the content of this tutorial and video editing is proffesional. I only wish id be there. I also worked in Reason before then i discovered Ableton. So, tnx again - looking forward to see your other vids.
At 01:05 Claude is like "Yeah yeah yeah, cut the crap, let's get on with it"
Check out the Xtrah masterclass... he uses Logic!
doubling any sound using an EXACT copy will double the amplitude, so doubling the bass is redundant... Unless you parallel process then you will get some very nice results...
So much knowledge
Keep your eyes peeled for forthcoming sessions ;)
Joy Orbison presenting proceedings, woi oi.
Please consider inviting "Edwin Van Cleef" for a production masterclass or in the studio with session. He'se from Leeds and his tracks are very, very well produced. Might be worth learning from :)
haha... this is the first time I have seen when he isnt wasted... : )
thanks for the upload!!!
An Enzo Siragusa' s masterclass should be great!
Foamo is awesome! It's like everything he touches sounds amazing. I love his style. There's not one track of his that I don't like. ;-)
Is it on youtube yet? I can't see it on your channel..
Nina Kravitz, Gene Farris, Todd Terje, Mr. G, Isolee, Andrew Weatherall, Guy Gerber, Stimming, Dominik Eulberg for Masterclasses
Solomun & Stimming for masterclass
not sure if you have seen it but stimming has done one for pyramind! Brilliant that guy is a different class
i will now! thank you!
Where are the ladies in the audience?
nice !!! i love claude
both have reasons for doing what they do, (see what i did there?) although live is way cool to most heads, reason has some badass synths like thor, and cool digital samplers, and nice drum patches so yea, its all about what sounds nice, and works for YOU, IMO
Look at everyone taking notes, being an artist chooses you, you don't choose to be an artist.
dumb comment. there is nothing untalented about taking notes.
53:11 he really does listen to every single demo, i probably shouldn't have sampled the whistler though...
How can I know when this is happening live? I'd love to throw a few questions in on the chat. This is awesome..
28:15 good advice
Hi! Luv u btw... Question... In reason when ur "tuning" bass are you in actual fact implementing a ring modulation??? Van u compare what u did to the bass in who's afraid of Detroit to Russ yallop's edit of fluffer??? Eager to learn.... :)
great man!
“Has anyone seen office space?” Yeeeess
Claude is a genius... when will the Foamo masterclass be up?
damn all the comments are from 6+ years looks like I'm behind
I sort of find it easier to hit my instruments/samples whilst their still in the browser and i'm playing what i've got, is this an update in live 9 that i've got that wasn't around when this was made or am i missing something?
interesing master class :D
yes yes
Stimming
BIG up :-D
very sympathetic!
But why don't you use ANALOGUE equipment to push your sounds?
if I had all the money, I would only buy analog grooveboxes, synthes,...
Can you elaborate on that? Does it appear that he is parallel processing the bass on this?
is the foamo one going to be one youtube?
Hey pointblank, check out Edwin VanCleef! He'se from the UK and a really good producer. Could make for an interesting masterclass
i like this guy
great tutorial
PLS Robert Natus, Arkus P, Leo Laker, Sven Wittekind, Kay D Smith, Tomash Gee, Lars Klein.
Flare is what I call it...
Every other damn video I ever find online is people using Logic. There's no shortage of what you're looking for. People do use other software to make music.
I wonder what he means by "making each bass note resonate correctly".. I guess there's some specific frequencies that harmonizes with each pitch of the bass note or something? Hmmm... Sounds fun.
i think he means like when you separate the notes onto different tracks your able to set the compression and EQ to match the specific note rather then trying to use the same compression and EQ settings for the whole bassline.
like for example when a note goes higher up a scale it will obviously move up the frequency spectrum so having it on a separate channel allows you to EQ it in a more precise fashion, similarly with compression when moving a note higher in pitch it speeding up the sound meaning different compression settings should be applied. the differences would be small but noticeable in the final mix id assume.
not 100% on this but it makes sense from my perpective
Loaf One that’s exactly what he was talking about doing. I’ve done it a few time (total pain in the ass) and it’ sounds super super super tight
great tutorial
"that's the cool thing about reason. really simple and fast."
HAHAHAHHHAAHAHAHA
If you know how actual pieces of gear work than it is... except the sequencer, yuck.
Well, it is really simple and fast. That's it's major draw, given some other limitations it has (no VSTs etc).
Things in Reason are where one would expect it, it doesn't change abruptly from version to version, it's quick to load and start writing, etc.
Fred Falke masterclass please
I WANT THAT GREY PALACE T SHIRT! ANYONE KNOW WHERE I CAN GET IT? SEARCHED EVERYWHERE!
whats the song on the intro?
make a production master class with Maths Time Joy !!!
how do they not have many questions...?, i'd have so many
7 Clean Birds do not like this funny-good.-guy & great producer.
What is that song between 00:05 and 00:15. Does anybody know?
i dont think most club systems are mono...
yeah! #ilhm
6:35 what is the tune??
i second that
funny that reason is open when the vid starts
amon tobin masterclass
And I don’t know whether he was really saying it
All he kept saying was
Eat, sleep, rave, repeat
Eat, sleep, rave, repeat
It's funny cuz in 2024 he's going to start using his real name but I remembered Barclay Crenshaw from him recording his screen in this video in 2012.
Can anyone explain how he sets the tracks back at 8:26? I cant find that view in Ableton.
Jason Bull I know it's a bit late but if you or anyone else wants to know it's pretty simple. At the middle right just below the scrollbar are four circles to toggle different things on and off. The one at 8:26 is the one with a 'D,' when you hover it says 'Show/Hide Track Delays'. It's the bottom one for me and in the video. Good luck
would be nice to see someone working in Logic! ;-)
masterclass ...
what is love?
for you ...?
