Hey all, I just want to thank Steve and the entire Gamers Nexus team for helping me out with this because to be honest it really helped me focus on everything else going on post hurricane. As much as I wanted to sit down and go through all of this myself….I honestly didn’t have the time, money, or space to do it. Everyone knows how hard it is to get things like GPUs these days so I was honestly prepared to be without a gaming computer for at least a year. Given how few companies there are that actually manufacture the PSUs, makes you wonder what Gigabyte is sending to the factory for specs and QA requirements.
I wouldn't hold high hopes for that PSU to have good ripple filtering. it's at its end of life at this age and should meet the recycling plant pretty soon :p
Can I just say - I'm loving the involvement from the team, I know being in front of a camera is nerve wracking as all hell but it's so cool seeing you guys work as a team and tackle a project like this :)
13:30... can we take a moment to acknowledge the cameraman, for adjusting the camera to sync up the multiplexing display to get it clear?... i wasn't expecting that bit included in the video, otherwise appreciate the information you guys bring us.
Haven't even finished the video but as someone living in Louisiana and having family throughout louisiana, I really appreciate this gesture man. We've been hit so hard in the last year from hurricanes, and just about everyone has felt it. My parents and brothers all suffered significant roof damage and are still reeling from the impacts. A large majority of home owners insurance companies are now backing out of Louisiana, leaving the remainder to raise rates quite high. It's just nice to see the altruism here.
It's been horrible to hear what even just this one viewer went through. I've kept in touch with him throughout the last few months and it has been eye-opening to see how slow and painfully dragged-out the process has been to recovery -- and, like you said, a lot of that is falling on insurance companies not wanting to deliver. A gaming computer seems like a relatively low priority item in the face of losing a home, but it meant a lot to him to have it working again, so we wanted to do everything we could. Hope you and your family are all doing well and have made a recovery from the hurricane.
@@GamersNexus We were all extremely fortunate to have suffered no catastrophic damage to our homes or to have suffered no injuries. There were so many much worse off than us, especially with the flooding, just like the owner of this computer had to have gone through. My parents live in a town just west of New Orleans, one of the towns that were hardest hit, and the roads were littered with powerlines and broken trees for miles and miles, hundreds of houses stripped of their roofs, just destruction everywhere. Seeing that with my own eyes makes it so easy to appreciate what we have despite it all. Thanks again.
Don't get me started on insurance companies. Mine decided that lumber won't increase in price even more than it did before the storm and my repairs are less than my deductible of about $4k. I'd like to know where they thought I could buy lumber to fix my fence along with labor and all that jazz. It's been months and yeah, some of us are still picking up the pieces. Pretty awesome for the guys at Gamers Nexus to do this. Some may see it as a small gesture but I'm pretty sure that meant the world to the owner of this PC to get it back. You guys rock, GN.
From Louisiana as well, really appreciate yall did this for a viewer. IDA was terrible, many people found out that years ago, many insurance companies like Statefarm raised house deductibles from 2 to 5%(10,000) and didn't receive a penny for their roof damages. I hope this viewer had a better outcome with their insurance than me and many others did.
Just so happy that when a viewer reached out GN didn't reply back with "Your CPU may have shaken loose during the hurricane." GN never ceases to amaze me.
That Corsair PSU surviving a literal hurricane is probably the best advertising they've had in a while. Gives me confidence that I made the right choice using their units in my and my husband's builds. Great video, and a great gesture. Much love to the GN team for doing this at all-- for any viewer. We love when companies like yours show that they care about their followers and content consumers. This is why you guys are my favorite media outlet-- period
If you bought the exact same model you're probably right, but if you have another Corsair PSU from another of their series that may not be true. In the past, Corsair's top of the line models (like this AX860) with high wattages and efficiency were very good, while low tier models you could get around 50-60 bucks were pretty mediocre, so it depends. Don't take brands at face value, check reviews for specific products to be 100% sure about what you're buying.
Agreed. I've used Corsair memory first, the switched to G.Skill memory, but I still use nothing but Corsair power supplies. They are nothing but tanks.
I dunno man there was a problem I while back where one of the RM650 had quite a few blowing up. I went through 2 of them on warranty, before just settling on a new one.
@@Zampella27 Yeah, I looked up that PSU. It's a 80+ Platinum top of the line model that seems to have launched at $250 in 2012 (About $303 in 2022 with inflation). Not really fair to compare it to lower end and cheaper Corsair model PSUs.
AX1600i here. Never blinked. Never rippled. Never broken a sweat. Not to say that the entire brand is great across the line, but when it’s good, it’s good.
As a fellow Louisianian who lost everything I owned, including my entire house in Hurricane Katrina, this is amazing to see. Thank you Steve and the entire GN family for this. Louisiana got hit very hard again and while I was much more fortunate this time around, there were many others who didn't make it out as well as I did. This truly means a lot and it was great to see someone from my state who is only an hour from me making it in the spotlight. It's surely is incredibly nice to see people come together in such a time of devastation and need.
We need so much than good words between us as human beings, it's what humanity really is all about. I'm an ex sailor and I went thru Hurricane Katrina back in 2005, on a port-container near the Azore Islands; it was terrible, the 6800 units ship wiggled around like a walnut in the bathtub, it was beyond scary. After that, I watched the Top Gear special, where the three "musketeers" visited a town devastated by the hurricane and they've marveled at the extent of the damage. Here, in Romania, Europe, we're having troubles with twisters for some years now; I really hope we won't get the level of disasters you guys have over there. Be safe and keep it strong.🖖💪
I really liked this video; saving gear from the landfill, helping out a disaster victim, cleaning up a build that ended up looking really good. We need more people like you.
The problem wasn't the hurricane, it was that the RAM sticks were in slots 3 & 4. You guys are great for helping Bilal, we always knew you care deeply for your viewers and this proves it more than anything. Great job!
As a fellow Louisianan this was amazing to see. Thank y’all so much for helping this viewer out. We’ve really been through it down here and getting a gaming pc back is really a great distraction from all the devastation. Great job by the whole team!
I have had the AX860 for over 8 years now and I was considering replacing it, but after seeing it go thru a hurricane… i think I might just keep it lol
A PSU if you buy a proper one at the start will go through several builds without problem. The only reason why one should need to upgrade is if they need a SFX/SFX-L/Flex ATX, noise, not enough wattage on initial purchase or it happened to die. That's why you don't cheap out on a PSU
Yeah, I was thinking parts of it are water damaged, but there's a chance there are parts that aren't significantly damaged and corroded (like that GPU) and shipping it with liquid in the system is tempting fate there.
@@JSTheAnonymousOne me: Laughs in shipping a full multi-rad loop across countries when i was in school. Then cries because you're absolutely correct and it's expensive asf. But I was moving somewhere any maintenance would've been very difficult, so it was the right call. Just painful
8:37 I've seen lots of content with warnings about not opening a power supply without training, but there's not much out there advising on how to do it safely. I'd love to see a video covering how it should be done, with a view to perhaps removing the dust and replacing the fan.
If you ever HAVE to open one, make sure to short everything on the back of the board. Don’t power it on the day before you open it. Don’t touch anything you don’t need to. Hold by the heatsinks. Not really a lot, just common sense and don’t do anything dumb. Work slow, and if you feel stressed take a break.
Unplug from the wall and remove the PSU from the case. Plug in a fan into one of the molex cables, and short the PS_On pin (usually a green cable) on the motherboard connector to a ground (usually black) to discharge. One the fan stops spinning, it should be discharged to a degree that's safe to handle, but leave the PS_On pin shorted a minute extra for safety. Don some rubber gloves if you want to be extra careful, open the PSU and use a multimeter to check the bulk capacitors exactly as shown as a final safety assurance. If you only see a few milivolts you're safe.
Patrick’s PaRappatheRappa shirt is super sick, a super sick gesture from some super sick(in a radical sense) dudes, with some super sick shirts! Not to mention this video was just absolutely phenomenal. It’s almost like you guys are the pc avengers lol, but seriously watching you guys just dive in. It was mesmerizing.
Went through three hurricanes in 2020, luckily no flooding and the windows held, but the case completely rusted, had to take apart the entire PC, dissassemble anything that had exposed metal with no powder coat and use a dremel to grind the rust away. The PC Case was done, had to grind like 90% of the case, make sure no rust remained and used a spray can of Anti rust paint for Truck beds on the case. Just managed to change it this past september.
I'm reminded of a repair I did on a client system... the appropriate tool was a trowel. It had been living in front of a window. In a dusty part of the desert. I took out about three inches of packed dirt (bottom two slots were completely covered). The wonder was the thing still worked.
@@1pcfred That particular desert dust is very fine clay, not sand. -- The dirt in my yard is conductive enough to short out electrical sockets. I had to put covers on all the barn outlets.
@@Reziac Line voltage is a tad higher than what you're going to find in a PC case outside the PSU itself. Lower voltage potential cannot pass current through less conductive materials. It simply lacks the electromotive force to create a circuit path. In the hydraulic model voltage is pressure. Low voltage has no push. It's why we don't get electrocuted by car batteries. Even though they can deliver hundreds of amperes. We're just not conductive enough to pass much current. We break down at about 36V.
That was a truly nice gesture, huge respect to you guys. I have always appreciated your honest and non-pretentious content and attitude. Keep up the good work!
New Orleans-born boy here, just echoing Steve's sentiment. I love to see the support. It really is breathtaking how much of your life can be taken in a day. The physical danger and property damage are obvious, but I gotta say that after the nightmare that was Katrina, the thing that I miss most is family photos. Years of memories just lost. You can get a home back. It's hard, but possible. Awesome people like Steve are what make that possible. Can't get pics of your late grandfather back.
A lot of my mom's side of the family is from Chalmette, I have lived in Mandeville almost my entire life. They lost all the pictures they had. They didn't bother taking anything with them because, "Hey, we're in the levees, nothing is going to happen." It is heartbreaking the things they lost.
Greg Salazar has his PC cleaning series, and der8auer cleaned some computers from the flooding in Germany and now GN is helping out a viewer with hurricane damage, it's nice to see tech youtubers helping people out.
They're just doing it for views. None of them deserve any praise whatsoever. Ask yourself, if this wasn't filmed and put on RUclips? Would they still do it? Pretty sure we both know the answer.
@@nexxusty I mean, making videos is how they make a living. It was also a good guide on how to deal with a dirty and/or water damaged PC. At the end of the day, they have content and the guy has a working PC, so it's a win-win. Not sure why you're so salty about it.
Videos like this is why I will always support you guys. Between patreon, and ordering your gear merch I will always do what I can to show support. You guys are truly great people, fantastic team, and humanitarians. Nothing but love for you guys.
What a great video, guys. I watched many of my friends and family lose their homes and livelihoods from hurricane Laura and Delta. Ida had a similar impact, just a bit further east. It's great to see y'all share some love with someone from a state that has been devastated year after year. Much love from Louisiana, GN.
Good thing in a hard time like that at least he's got his gaming right back when he needs to clear his mind he can go off and game which is pretty nice you guys did an awesome job
As someone that does professional electronics restoration for insurance companies, you guys really did go above and beyond for that guy and his PC. A lot of the things I see coming from Hurricane Ida end up being written off and just replaced. That PC got lucky, and it's great seeing all the effort the GN Team put into bringing that PC back to (and actually even better than) its pre-loss condition. Really respectable work, GN Team!
This is a great video showcasing the new kit you’ve got and the people behind the temps and charts. May all PC companies suddenly realise they can’t hide anything from the consumer anymore!
Have to say this is the greatest thing I've seen in along time. I've been threw alot of hurricanes and have experienced the destruction form them. Made me happy seeing you do this for him.
This video hits very close to home as I was directly in the path of Ida. As in, the eye of the storm passed right over my neighborhood so we got the hardest part of it. I, and most of the people I know were very, very lucky to not have sustained major damages, but we still had some roof damage. I can't even begin to imagine how hard it's been for people in Houma where I heard it was absolutely terrible. Thanks GN for helping this guy out as I know many people still have not fully gotten back on their feet from Ida. And, if anyone is having issues in the local St. James Parish area, please give me a shout. My name's Blaine and you've probably heard my name a little if you're from around here. I may not be able to give much, but I can definitely give what I can, even if it is just emotional support as it's something I've needed many times. Love you all.
I have to say, it's pretty amazing you guys had the exact same motherboard in your spare parts too. Your inventory of parts must be getting extremely expansive at this point. Would be interesting to see a list of your inventory for curiosity sake. Good to see something incredible came out of that as well. As everyone else has already said, this was a fantastic video and gesture. Top notch work all around.
The power supply was pretty impressive for surviving at the bottom of the case in this situation. Not only still working, but having a solid tested efficiency score.
You guys are awesome, this is my favorite channel and I'm glad to see some good in the world. Can't wait to see some fan testing and the new space get fleshed out and refined.
Really appreciate that you guys actually did test all the parts if there were still working alright and not just replaced stuff bc it was dirty or "outdated". Takes a lot more effort and time, and ultimately shows you care about what the guy put together himself instead of just going: "oh well, board is dead, might as well upgrade to something better bc that 8700k is ancient by now anyway etc etc"
There is just something about the face Steve makes at 3:37 that really makes me smile. It's one of those face's that you just wish for once that you could full take in all the information it represents.
That's so awesome! I had a house fire in December 2020 and thought I lost everything, as I had a UPS running and you don't think about the firefighters water everywhere. Luckily I only lost the UPS (as far as PC stuff) and was able to save a lot more than I expected, but it's a terrible feeling to have any home disaster like that. Glad you guys helped him out!
what did you do about the psu? My apartment building got ran through by a fire but burned on both sides of the building before getting put out in my living room ( being in the middle of the third floor). This happened last feb and I still actively use it today.
Thanks for taking care of this guy. I have been through more than my share of hurricanes and so far (knock on wood), I haven't lost anything. I did a like recovery for my brother-in-law a few years ago after his system was caught in a house fire. It was up on a table and the blast furnace like heat that came through the room melted the top of the case. Despite the unexpected power failure, even the spinning drives survived. As in your example, the motherboard was the one part that did not survive. The cpu seemed okay at first, but I opted to replace it because I had a like one. Rebuilt everything in a new case and it was mostly fine for a couple of years. When it started giving us trouble, he was working on contract, so I told him it was time to build all new. I went to Micro-Center Houston and picked up parts. It went together nicely and has worked for a few years since. The minus one system is built in a Zalman Z9 case and exhibits a strange "feature". After being left on for a while, the USB ports stop working. You can move the mouse or hit keys on the keyboard and the system will not wake up. It requires a full power on reset to clear. Since I have now seen this same symptom on two other motherboards in this case, I feel certain the problem is the case.
I'm sending my 10x thumbs up your way at 150mph! Long time follower here and it kind of makes me proud watching this video. I'm proud to be a part of such a lovely community. Sure, you could just have grabbed some new parts off the shelf, but the time and effort put in to this is worth way more. I love the attention to detail ( as in every GN video :) ) leaving no stone unturned.
This is the first GN video i've seen where they do something like this and it's great. It's obvious the guy had an expensive rig and after losing a lot of other things, and the current problems/prices with PC parts this is great!

Watching Patrick clean the fans, I was like hey I clean mine that way too lol. @Gamers Nexus and anyone else, what's your take on that 7000D case? I'm looking to upgrade mine.
I don't actively spend a lot of time watching youtube. Yet, I love and missed the channel so checking this video out made me pretty damn happy. Amazing team at Gamers Nexus, good ass dude Hardware Jesus.
Wow, that is all I can say. You guys outdid yourselves. That PC looks almost brand new. Congratulations on an amazing job. Now, do you want to stop by my house to clean, and rebuild my 9-year-old PC?
Really amazing gesture you've done today man. Not only do I look up to you for your intense amount of knowledge on PC's. Now for your generosity . Kudos to you brother, glad to see there is still some humanity in this crazy PC world we live in. Full of hate due to inflated prices, and not too many people able to upgrade their components. Great job mate!
Also, is there a better ad for a power supply then "Withstood a hurricane"? They should give you guys an Ad because they just became the power supply I want lol I have a basement apartment in a floodable zone.
I love content like this. You managed to help out somebody when they are down, and made many others feel good about it at the same time. Thank you for this!
GN (publicly) - "We'll replace or upgrade his stuff because we're nice guys and it's the right thing." GN (privately) - "Man, this is the perfect chance to get rid of some of this random stuff we got laying around!" XD
A Hurricane video mixed in with a PC restoration. Really nice from your part, the people in Louisiana have been through so much in the last two years during the 2020 and the 2021 Hurricane seasons. This is a kind gesture to see and it will bring some joy to someone who went through such an intense situation.
Great video, happy to see that kind of content as well. Wish I'd see the guy's face when he gets the PC back! That psu is a BEAST! My Corsair CS650M PSU was with me for almost 10 years powering gpus like the GTX 560ti, 680, 960, 970, multiple 1060s, 1070, 1080ti, a 3060 and finally a 3070 before I upgraded to a new Corsair PSU. I sold it because it was still going strong. Man, PSUs are so underrated.
I have been using that same PC case since 2014 - Corsair 750D. Last year when I was upgrading to intel 10th gen I completely striped the case for a deep clean and replaced all the fans with noctua fans. After putting to back together it was as good as new or maybe better!
Considering what it went through, the viewer was very lucky that only the motherboard died! Big props to you guys for helping out! A little lesson here too is to unplug the power if you have to leave something like this behind, it'll probably save most if not all of your components.
it's still a good idea to drain the loop before shipping since it could leak during shipping and make the box weak, and damage other packages shipped next to it.
I am from Louisiana and my house was hit by 2 hurricanes in 6 weeks, Laura and Delta. I stored my computers at another house, and they came out fine. Quick tip for cleaning fans/heat sinks, a WaterPik filled with 91% rubbing alcohol works GREAT!
respect from me is at 100%. this type of kindness you don't even see from 14mil sub channels. This has to be my favorite video of 2021(even if we are in 2022 ) 😅
Thankfully, most storage media can survive getting wet. In the case of mechanical harddrives, so long as the controller board is okay, the platters are hermetically sealed. With SSDs, much like the controller board on HDD, if you can confirm there is no damage, the controller should work to access the memory. HDDs can be at risk if waters rise in such a way that the PC falls off a surface onto something hard, but I believe that is the worst case (IMHO)
Efficiency is all well and good but what you need to be concerned about with an aging PSU is noise and ripple. What ages in a PSU is the filter capacitors. As they grow old they are less capable of doing their job. They allow noise and ripple to pass through them into the rest of your system. Which can damage your PC. Those filter caps weren't put in there for laughs. You really do need them. SMPS beat the crap out of caps too. Just how it is.
One of the reasons I respect this team/channel so much. It's not all about the money to you guys and you always seem to give back to this community. Thank you.
It's nice of you to do this and help salvage parts rather than dumping them as e-waste. Debau8er also did something similar to this as well but some of those pc parts were in much worse condition which was caused by the flash flood in germany I think.
Common I would have at least gave the guy a CPU upgrade or something lol. I know that sounds greedy but it woulda been nice after all he went through. It would have been cool if you surprised him by sending him back his PC with a decent performance upgrade as well. I know you got some 10900K's laying around lol and you had to replace the motherboard anyway. Obviously restore like you did for content but upgrade it before you sent it back. But at least he has a working PC again and at the end of the day that's all that matters.
A new motherboard and case is very generous and all their time and effort fixing it up. Now is not the time to try to replace a PC. They did a solid here.
@@1pcfred their time and effort? lol you do realize this is their job right? they made a video out of and made thousands of dollars cleaning this guys PC. he could have just cleaned it himself and just got a new motherboard lol. and the board was used with bent pins not new lol. 8700k is starting to show it's age. would have been cool if they gave him a cpu upgrade since they had to replace the board anyway.
@@1pcfred Lets be honest here their "time and effort" doesn't really count when they make a RUclips video out of it and profit. This was free content for them. They didn't take the PC home and clean it in their free time off camera lol. And Idk what you're talking about "now is not the time to replace a PC" I'm just saying it woulda been nice if they upgraded the CPU, not rebuild the whole machine considering they have plenty of spare CPU upgrades I'm sure. Sounds like a fair trade to me, he gives them content and he gets an upgrade in return lol.
@@leeroyjankins2307 the board is new to the recipient. It has less time on it than his old board did too. Plus it has the added benefit of actually working. Sure Steve could have given them a whole new PC. But that wasn't the goal. The goal was to get their old PC running again. Or as much of it as they could. A hand up as opposed to a handout.
@@1pcfred The board literally had bent pins on it and was labeled as not working lmao. But you're right it is working now compared to his old one that didn't. But Idk why you keep saying "a whole new PC"? Where did anyone here say he should have given him a new PC? We're just talking about a CPU upgrade here. Nobody is saying that he should have given him a new PC. Again just the CPU. Pay attention. He would still keep his GPU, PSU, storage, memory, etc. Not a new PC dude. Steve has plenty of extra CPU's he could have given the guy considering his current CPU is old and nearly bottlenecking his 3080. Not a big deal.

@@Daxiongmao87 I drove through LaPlace and it was bad there. I am in St James Parish.
Just so happy that when a viewer reached out GN didn't reply back with "Your CPU may have shaken loose during the hurricane."
GN never ceases to amaze me.
The hurricane bent the pins and he never even opened the case
We always do that
That Corsair PSU surviving a literal hurricane is probably the best advertising they've had in a while.

@@GamersNexus Hey Gigabyte! here ́s an example for "how to do a PSU" xd
A PSU if you buy a proper one at the start will go through several builds without problem. The only reason why one should need to upgrade is if they need a SFX/SFX-L/Flex ATX, noise, not enough wattage on initial purchase or it happened to die.
That's why you don't cheap out on a PSU
Same here, definitly going to keep it now
What a wonderful thing you guys did for him! This is one of my favorite Gamers Nexus videos! I own the same model of 7000D it's a great upgrade!
Draining the loop is always a good idea when shipping, a good call.
Yeah, I was thinking parts of it are water damaged, but there's a chance there are parts that aren't significantly damaged and corroded (like that GPU) and shipping it with liquid in the system is tempting fate there.
Even if it's not for safety, it weighs less and costs less to ship. Draining the loop won't hurt
@@JSTheAnonymousOne me:
Laughs in shipping a full multi-rad loop across countries when i was in school.
Then cries because you're absolutely correct and it's expensive asf. But I was moving somewhere any maintenance would've been very difficult, so it was the right call. Just painful
I agree. I wasn't even thinking about water damaging components. I was just thinking that if it started leaking, they might not deliver it.
The warnings are there for a reason. Probably why no one does how tos is liability.
As cool as that would be. It could make GN liable for damages, and I just dont think Steve wants people hurting themselves (even at their own risk)

Sand is not very conductive.
@@1pcfred one could say it is semi-conductive...

Really appreciate that you guys actually did test all the parts if there were still working alright and not just replaced stuff bc it was dirty or "outdated".
My apartment building got ran through by a fire but burned on both sides of the building before getting put out in my living room
( being in the middle of the third floor).
This video made me smile, thanks for that. I have built a lot of PC's for people for free because I can't stand watching people get ripped off.

one thing that wasnt discussed (im pretty sure) was his storage medium/data. was his data able to be recovered?
Thankfully, most storage media can survive getting wet. In the case of mechanical harddrives, so long as the controller board is okay, the platters are hermetically sealed. With SSDs, much like the controller board on HDD, if you can confirm there is no damage, the controller should work to access the memory.
HDDs can be at risk if waters rise in such a way that the PC falls off a surface onto something hard, but I believe that is the worst case (IMHO)
hey im still using that exact PSU thinking of replacing it but since you guys mention efficiency after all 10 years saved me for new one BIG thanks!

AX860 over 8 years old, survives a hurricane and still runs ~90% efficiency under full load. That one heck-of-a good p/s. Great job guys. 🤘😎👍
Yikes gotta see this.
A 3080 too??? 😭
Close call!
Also being somebody that went through and experienced hurricane ida (but was more fortunate than bilal), just wanna say it's definitely rough for anybody to rebuild and get back on your feet especially with the damage it looks like he sustained. Such a kind gesture by all of yall to do this. Much love
Been there ... years back i had a house roof/ceiling come down in my storage room.. was FULL of old systems dating back to 79' lots of old 21' crt monitors and the works, i was pack ratting gear for future to sell .. But the ceiling was made of old school strapping and basically concrete filled.. after years of a small water leak it soaked and soaked so much water the whole part of the house came crashing down and it was like a slab of concrete 20x20 foot dropping 12 foot down and CRUSHED everything and when i was collecting it was all e-waste back then so insurance screwed me . Lost it all . I can empathize with this guys troubles . Learned a valuable lesson, now all my gear is Safely stored . Good luck .
