RIP, Ronnie Spector 😥"Waking In The Rain" was the fifth of the group's eight songs that appeared on the Billboard Hot 100. It was released in October 1964 and peaked at #23 on the Hot 100. The single included sound effects of thunder and lightning which earned audio engineer Larry Levine a Grammy nomination.
Ronnie was being interviewed on Terry Gross' Fresh Air. They played a bit from this song and she started singing along with herself while the clip was playing. I'll always remember her fondly from this alone. This was a fabulous, well-made record.
I can’t really explain quite how much I love this song, it brings me to tears and transports me to a better place with it’s sheer majestic beauty, the earnestness, the huge galloping chorus, Ronnie’s voice, Spector’s production, the arrangement, the musicianship. Genius.
Estelle Bennett, one of the Ronettes, used to date George Harrison (yes, the quiet Beatle). But she suffered lifelong depression after the Ronettes broke up and was reported to be homeless for years. It’s so sad because Estelle graduated valedictorian from her high school and there was so much promise in her life that was never actualized.
That's the same thunderclap sound effect they often used with Count von Count on "Sesame Street" in the 1970s. "Three! Three Ronettes walking in the rain! Ah, ah, ah, ah, ah, ah! Wonderful!"
I might be 80 years old,but i got to witness all of this music when it came out.Wouldn't change a thing.Written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil with help from Phil Spector.Check out Brill Building Pop.We saw her and the Ronettes in 1972 at the Red Dog Saloon,in Lawrence,Ks.Of course they were great!!!!
Better than The Supremes? Not even close. Or The Bangles in the '80s, who played all their instruments and is the only girl band to score 5 top 10 hits? I don't think so. I grew up listing to dynamite songs like "Walking In The Rain" but they weren't the best girl band. As Ronnie said in an interview on YT, she didn't read music or know how to sing but Spector worked his magic in the studio. However, I do love "Walking In The Rain", having listened to it a lot on my portable AM radio.
@@danielfronc4304 Ok, you make a pretty good case. I do like the Bangles. I liked the Supremes better back in the day, but now I never listen to them. Walking In The Rain was by far my favorite Ronettes song back then, but now I could name 15 other songs of theirs that I like better. The Crystals come in 2nd for me overall, with Then He Kissed Me as maybe my favorite song of all time. It's not really the musicianship that's important to me, it's the sound coming into my ears, so probably Phil Spector has a lot to do with it.
Whatever all that... They are the best girl group ever period!.. In my eyes anyway. I've always loved the girl group sound. The Ronettes just had it "goin on" ..Had sum particular allure about them seems to me like... Anyway. lol
Things were so much more care free back then from my standpoint which was New York City. I wish I could go back to then from at least this songs standpoint and many others !
THE RONETTES SONGS WERE REMENICINT OF THE 60'S AND THEY DEFINITELY BELONG IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME !!!!! PHIL SPECTRE'S SURROUND SOUND NOT ONLY MADE THE RONETTES BUT A LOT OF OTHER GROUPS !!!! GREAT MUSIC IN A GREAT EXPLOSION OF SONGS & GROUPS !!!!!
What's amazing with music is that you grew up with it and I'm 22 but it brings memories to me when I wasn't born!?🖤 Music never dies and is to me the ultimate best thing in this world , only music can bring all of us together like that!🙏🏻
I love the Ronettes I sing metal and folk but was raised on this music. My dad always told me if you want to be a singer listen to early 60s music! I'm gonna get the Ronnetes tattoed on me! My dad was a singer in the motown scene. He and my grandpa sang with Dean Martin. I am a pro musician and will always have the Ronettes in my thank yous!
I’ve wondered if the Ronettes would have been as successful under Barry Gordy at Motown. Probably not. But she wouldn’t have been abused by Phil Specter.
songs from the ronettes that make my all-time music bucket list: 3) "sleigh ride" 2) "be my baby" and my fave 1) "walkin in the rain". rest in power pretty one~ lil bro
Love that Oldie movie where the kids make fun of the DJs oldies - he tells one of them " Son - when you're old - these songs will still be young " damn right
His wall of sound was unique but some critics argue that it was not much of anything other than a gimmick. But I like it when it came out of a cheap AM radio. Love the Ronettes. Phil made his first million by the time he was 23. Can't forgive him fir killing a woman.
@@ms.annthrope415 correct, the Wall Of Sound was designed to enhace music on AM radio, which is inherently a poor medium for music. Unfortunately on higher quality FM or playback on HiFi (or modern sound systems) it sounds too over-produced
I went to every Murray The K's Brooklyn Fox Xmas show. The Ronnets were always on the bill. One day after a show I went into McCrorys, sat down ordered a hamburger and Fries and who sits on my left side none other than Ronnie, she was a smart, a funny lovely human being a great conversationalist and a pretty human being even though she married that killer, Phil Whatshisname? 😅 😅 Being the gentleman I paid for her Burger and Pepsi. We walked arm in arm in the slush back to the Fox for her next show. It was a wondrous time. This song is my favorite I know I know people will say Be My Baby was the best, to each their own. R.I.P. MY SWEET LOVELY LADY. YOUR VOICE AND DEMEANOR ARE MISSED AND WILL BE IN MY HEART FOREVER!!!! I will cherish those 45 minutes forever.😢

My Nic name all my life has been, "Ron". As a small child of the 1960's I remember their songs and thought they named their band after me. A foolish child I was. heh. RIP Ronnie.
I am sorry about what you went through . I am glad the music was some comfort to you. You are a precious human life . They should not have done that to you. I hope you find some happiness now.
Recorded in one take. Rest in power, Queen.
Rise in Purpose.

I got to meet Larry Levine at Gold Star before they tore it down.
The pinnacle of popular music history.

The 5 out of 8 ?
In my subjective opinion theses young ladies were better than the Supremes.....
Ronnie was being interviewed on Terry Gross' Fresh Air. They played a bit from this song and she started singing along with herself while the clip was playing. I'll always remember her fondly from this alone. This was a fabulous, well-made record.
I saw Ronnie in 2018, but fell in love with her in 1964.
I would have loved to have walked in the rain with you, Ronnie. RIP.
RIP Ronnie!! Sweetest voice of a generation!
Oh I didn't know, what a bummer, and I never got to see her.
Uma letra linda.
Wonderful, wonderful song .reminds me of my youth .❤❤❤
RIP, Ronnie. Your magnificent voice is now added to the heavenly host, while your legacy lives on.
Why am I crying? I can't believe this sweet woman is gone. R.I.P Ms. Spector!

The 60's was a fabulous time to grow up in, everything was changing and the music was so diverse and new.
I agree. But the innocence died some time before '65, don't you think?
I know that '50s Doo-Wop and Chuck Berry couldn't go on forever, of course.
Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil were some kind of songwriters!
Ronnie thank you for the memories and being there for a lonely shy teenager during the 80s
Ronettes at their best
From someone who remembers when this was on the charts, I'll miss you and the Ronettes.
I remember
Just found out she passed and had to play this song. R.I.P. Ronnie. We miss you already.
RIP Ronnie Spector. Thank you for all the joy you brought. You'll never be forgotten.
There is many wonderful classic songs about rain.the music of the Ronettes will be popular for a very long time.
Ronnie Spector is the Greatest female singer ever.
There can only be one best ! By virtue of definition ! And this is it !!!!
Pure and absolute magic
Ronnie's voice - utter perfection.
I recall a gorgeous co-ed at NYU who loved to just walk in a light rain. Every time I hear this song, I remember her with affection.
Great Great Great Song!!!!!
Rest in Peace Ronnie Spector!❤

Yeah, she did have a unique and distinctive voice, and Phil Spector gave the group a unique groundbreaking sound to go along with it.
What a romantic song!
Loved her she was awesome in the oldies concert
Never said they were on the "label" just the style and sound of Motown music of the time.
She surely be missed truly truly.
