Season Four - Episode Ten: "Salud"
Episode Overview:
Following his brutal fight with Walt, Jesse nervously joins Gus and Mike in Mexico to teach the cartel how to make Walt’s blue meth. Upon their arrival, however, it’s clear to Jesse that the cartel’s chief chemist is upset at having someone so young and without any formal scientific training overseeing his work. So, realizing that his survival depends on getting the upper hand, Jesse makes it clear that things will be done his way or not at all. Back in Albuquerque, Walt is nowhere to be found, so Skyler has no choice but to go ahead and give a clearly underwhelmed Walt, Jr. the used car they bought him for his birthday. And with funds provided by Skyler, lawyer Saul Goodman convinces Ted Beneke that a distant relative died and left him enough money to pay his back taxes.
Though Skyler, Marie and Hank are all at the birthday party, Walt’s absence is conspicuous. So, after excusing himself to go out with friends, Walt, Jr. heads to his dad’s condo instead. When his son finds him bloodied from his run-in with Jesse, Walt claims to have been in fight while gambling. Meanwhile, Jesse is stunned to discover that Gus has cut a deal that makes him the Mexican cartel’s property.
Upon learning that he used some of her money to lease a luxury car, Skyler drops in on Ted to remind him of his debt to the IRS. But when Ted insists on using the cash to restart his business instead, Skyler blurts out the truth about where it came from and insists that he settle his debt with the government. Finally, to celebrate the deal that will keep Jesse in Mexico indefinitely, Gus gives Don Eladio a bottle of very rare tequila. However, after taking precautions to protect himself, Gus watches the cartel boss and his henchmen fall victim to the deadly poison he placed inside the bottle, but not before Mike is shot in the ensuing battle. Leaving the bodies of Don Eladio and his men scattered around their lavish hacienda, Jesse rushes a very sick Gus and the gravely wounded Mike to safety.

I love the smile Gus has when Jesse calls the lab disgusting. He's a food chef and he knows the crimes of not bothering with basic prep work and having a dirty worksite are far more unforgivable sins than a lack of technical knowledge.

They can produce the aesthetic effect and also superior steel now exists but that combination of metal is gone forever apparently. Also true of some Roman empire inventions I read despite great parallels they cant make some unique products of that age.

I think part of it is that gus seems to have some form of ocd. Especially from some scenes in bcs. I think the reference to cleanliness is what cuts through his facade.

Honestly, even if Gus brought Walt to the fray here, it's pretty absurd of them to not have such a core ingredient already ready. It's only after they see Jesse that they think he's a hack if I remember correctly.
They'd be wasting time making large quantities like atleast barrels of phenyl acetic acid. Any sophomore in Chemistry can make it sure, but industrially? The specific quantity needed?

I love how this scene shows that Jesse did learn from Walt. From doing exactly the way he does, to making sure everything is clean, and even talking about “contaminants” from Fly
As “stupid” everyone sees Jesse as, he is the second best chemist on the show, beating out both Gale and cartel guy, while remaining headstrong enough to deal with the criminal underworld.

And still managed to fumble with the pressure in the end.

One of my favorite things about this scene is that when the lab guy said "I speak English", hoping to take Jesse offguard, Jesse sticks to his words and calls him an asshole again. Jesse is such a badass in this episode.
I cracked up immediately. And besides, it proves that he has integrity, as does his insistence on cleanliness and safety standards.

Aaron Paul / Jesse did make a powerful impression in this scene. He doesn't blink an eye, his voice doesn't flinch.
He truly speaks and acts like a boss here, and I think Gus is actually very impressed when watching him.
He saw the high potential on him and, maybe, things could have been different without Walter after that.

Giancarlo Exposito has great acting skills. The way he smiles when see Jesse handling the situation is so subtil, very soft changing in expression. Very well done.

The head chemist's priorities were eschewed. He spent time synthesizing a basic component, which decreased costs by some amount, but increased time between batches. On the other hand, he didn't take the time to clean his lab, which lead to contamination and lower grade products, leading to a lower possible sales price and less profit. So his process delivered less quality and less rentability, and he was proud of these lower standards. In Gus's eyes, he was neither a businessman or a true professional, which is why he was proud of Jesse for calling him out.

@pyropulse I doubt it. Jesse has cooked with Walt for like a year and a half. They have cooked every week together for a long period of time so Jesse kinda has developed that muscle memory required for a 90% + yield. I don't think that Cartel chemist would have instantly learned Heisenberg's techniques. It's not about knowledge its about experience.
pyropulse It takes time regardless. Look at Todd, who cooked with Walter and got it up to what, 70 percent by himself?
Walter's process was so brilliant and at another level that it propelled a novice with no chemistry knowledge to still front like a master drug maker. Incredible. And that's the difference between a caltech grad with a passion and expertise in crystal structures and proton radiography and some douche bag from bozo the clown university who fronts like he IS from caltech

Given the standards he set at Pollos, I'm sure Gus appreciated Jesse's devotion to cleanliness.
I love how this scene shows how far Jesse has come. He has so much more confidence, and self-respect than he did in season 1. Now he may not be great at chemistry, but he know how to make the Blue. He also knows that he needs a clean environment to work with. He takes pride in his work, and wants to make sure it's done right
I love how Jesse can tell he’s being insulted (in Spanish), just off the body language alone. He’s played this game before.
Yeah he just gives the guy in charge a look that says "Is this guy shit talking me?" and as soon as the guy looked away he knew he was free to school that asshole.
Not just tone, it was also the mentioning of the acid (which has a distinctive name which sounds the same in both languages), the rest was pretty easy to get from context.
He probably has a minimal knowledge. If you live in the Southwest long enough, its pretty easy to get the gist of what someone means.

Its hardly about that. He's happy to see Jesse improvise on the go, turning a potentially disastrous situation around completely. Its been a long while since I watched the show so I cant recall if Jesse's amateur level of chemistry knowledge was already known to Fring, but either way he's happy to see the him wiggle himself out.

@@meltdown4126 All three of you are right. Plus, if there's one thing Gustavo Fring knows, it's food science. Would you expect to get consistently pure food out of a kitchen in that state? Yes, Jesse stepped up to the plate and summoned the confidence to stand on his own two feet and face down potential disaster. And yes, Jesse had experience from a great teacher to draw upon. But cleaning the lab prior to beginning is also just plain smart chemistry.

Jessie started showing these signs when he went to cook on his own with Badger and literally wasted 3 trays worth of thousands of bucks of meth just to get the right clean version of the product made by Walt, this was done by a Junkie who had a hard time just letting go of the bong and ruining his life.

So many great moments for so many characters in this show. This is one of Jessie Pinkman’s best. Armed with Walter’s chemistry and a 97% pure product, he’s practically bullet proof.
When the Cartel dude said, "I speak English" most people thought Jesse would back off but instead he pushed harder. That's what makes this scene great.

He honestly brought all that pain in the end upon himself.
The combination of "I'm the guy your boss brought here to show you how it's done" and telling him to stop whining like a little bitch were pure facts that the dude couldn't deny and had absolutely no rebuttal.
This has to be one of my favorite scenes in the series, because it shows Jesse taking control of a frickin Cartel scientist, challenging him, and owning him in front of the entire crew, and most importantly, in front of Gus.
Jessey learning & being accepted by Gus is my Absolute Favorite part of the show. Gus was literally the Season 4 Protagonist, and jessey got the Respect & Development here deserved.

I personally think that is exactly what this episode was made to represent. Jesse's growth. He talks about scowering (idk how to spell) the entire lab and scrubbing every cook surface. just as Walt was so particular and wouldn't cook because of on singular fly.

Tfw this cartel dude was willing to waste everyone's time by waiting for large quantities of acid to be made which would take 'several hours'. Them not having it ready is a deliberate attempt at a power play here.

This episode showed Jesse's skill at making the meth: he had 96% purity. Both that guy and even Gale couldn't do that and they had fancy chemistry degrees.
Well he's been at it with Walt for god knows how long. Gale could probably do it by the time Jesse had killed him.

I liked how he basically displayed all the things he learned from Walt in this scene, not only that he knows how to synthesize the product, but also his mannerism, how he speaks and his attention to cleanliness. He's like a cursing Mini-Heisenberg

They knew Jesse didn’t know how to make it from scratch and only knew how to cook the product one way and that is by having all the supplies ready. Jesse wasn’t fooling anyone. The Chemist and his team were scared to death because they knew Gus was a dangerous man, they couldn’t say “no” to Gus or to the other cartel guy. Gus on the other hand smiled because he realized that Jesse was brave and willing to adapt to any situation, and showed that he is not just Walter’s sidekick but that he has a mind of his own.

I like how Gus approached that chemist from behind when the conflict is at its most intense moment. I think Gus really cares about Jesse at this point.

What was really happening had little to do with actual knowledge of how to make the acid, it came down to who could win Gus's confidence. At the end of the day if I remember right the decision to have Jesse there still came down to Gus, so what Jesse whispered to Gus renewed Gus's confidence in him. The mexican chemist was just trying to instill doubt in Gus's choice so as to preserve as much control by his people as possible, but he failed to convince Gus. It's a recurring theme throughout the show. The technical details didn't matter so much.

I always wondered, would Jesse actually know who Captain Cook was, or did he just think it sounded good?
The scene shows how character development happens without even our noticing. Look at the state of Captain Cook's lab from Season 1 and now the same person talking of cleaning standards. Also proves the importance the episode "Fly"
This also indirectly justifies Gus killing Victor without directly saying it.... Gus was telling Jesse on the way "I believe in you " and placed his faith AND his life of a Junkie he tried to kill a few months earlier....
Victor didn't receive any mentorship and even if he copied Walt's cook step by step things like synthesing his own phenthastic acid AND the condition of their lab matters to the degrees.... Jesse cooked 96.2% which is 0.2% higher than Gale's guarantee with a unfamiliar environment....
If Victor cooked, the Cartel's cook would've alpha'd him, rattled him, he would've made mistakes not clean up the place and even then when they saw his cook.... It would've been so unpure, Victor Gus and Mike would've been killed instantly and buried in the desert
