I worked for an employment agency back in 2016 and we were contracted to go into closed Baltimore city schools and retrieve files and student records that were left behind. We had an armed police escort in some cases. We found all kinds of things in them. Homeless people, drug addicts, kids playing, syringes, drugs, condoms, black mold etc etc. One if the schools had an empty swimming pool completely filled to the top with trash. The best thing we ever found was a full 5 on 5 basketball game being played in the gymnasium.
These abandoned schools, hospitals, etc always make me a little sad because it's just so much waste. Seems like the building could've been repurposed and the appliances and such could've been sold or given to someone or some org in need.
Those old schools, it is cost prohibitive to redevelop them. That school more then likely has asbestos floor, ceiling tiles and pipe insulation as well as lead paint. Then you get to the HVAC - if it is as old as it looks, it probably had a coal fired boiler as well. It would easily cost millions to rehab that type of property and make it usable again.
@@Poppa_C_McD That makes a lot sense. The thing is, someone will have to deal with the asbestos at some point as the building will fall into disrepair and surely the asbestos will be exposed to the elements/people then?
True, I'm honestly surprised it hasn't been stolen or scrapped. Could easily get a few thousand for what I've seen in the video. Entire place is loaded with copper pipes and wires as well. It's in queue for demo so water and power is off. Honestly, I'd rather see it get recycled and help a homeless person than just get landfilled.
That scary looking, walking bag of skin & bones scared the shit out of me when he popped into view. I thought for a minute he was headed your way Dan...😳
Tens of thousands worth of kitchen equipment just sitting there, looks to be in very good condition too. That mixer is worth every bit of 15k alone.....what a waste!
The surrounding county of Baltimore would love to have such a vast school for students to attend. The overcrowding in Baltimore County (the county which surrounds Baltimore City) is chronically overcrowded.
If only there was a way to transport a large number of students at once, from a designated pick up location to the campus of a public school. We should really develop some sort of specialized vehicle that can do that...but for this idea to work you'd need people who want stable long term employment not requiring a college degree to drive these things...and where are you going to find that in quasi rural Maryland ..never going to happen.
That lunch line area in the kitchen food descending area and that auditorium look just like my old school that I attended from Kindergarten through 8th Grade. So cool to see that. When I saw the lunch line I took a double take…took me way back…..
Honestly, I feel really sorry for the “contractor” guy. He seemed like a nice dude going through a tough time. I truly hope he’s able to come out the other end on top.
I graduated from Baltimore City public schools back in 1969 but don't recognize this particular school building. It does have a 1950s look to it inside based on a '50s elementary school I attended in the city. Your breathing sounded like Darth Vader which made things even more creepier.
Sorry Dan, this video just made me depressed and kinda pissed. Looks like Baltimore has got money to burn like Detroit. They seriously don't have SOMEONE in there right now leaseing the place? This country is going to hell in a sports car.
Yeah, I find it hard not to politicize this stuff. That could have been a shelter, that could have been for job training, that could have been senior living, that could have been a methadone clinic to keep the tweakers from passing out on the expressway...
This is a huge school by the looks. Well documented, Dan, as always. I think Werner and I found one similar there. So much stuff left behind but where we were we didn't see the icky sticks on the ground
Dan captures abandoned places as they are. One of the first shots of the hallway with the bulletin board "what do the five promises mean to you?" is so poetic. Especially when you connect these visuals to the modern context of school closures and decaying communities in the US. The rich get richer and the poor lose everything.
Sad,but true,my dear friend. It's sad, haunting, and drastic moments like those that make us realize. That this country isn't all that's cracked up to be. Baltimore,MD,is even worse than the rest of that wretched abyss of a state. What happened? Maryland was once a state with plenty of promise! Industrial entities and job opportunities started to slowly wane. Job opportunities started to dwindle. And pretty soon, the future of the state's economy of Maryland started to crumble. That's why Owning Mills Mall had started to fade. The town of Owning Mills, Maryland had started to alter. People who had been living there for years had started to have interest living elsewhere. Many small rural unincorporated areas, towns, and cities in Maryland started to slowly fade away. Into drugs, abject poverty, and misery. Racism among black Americans sure as hell didn't help! But i noticed too many squatters inside so i decided it was perhaps not safe to do so. I have my regrets though, as i have a lot of fond memories from that school.
