  • I finally switched to Da Vinci Resolve (the free version for now) and can finally put the M2 Pro Mac Mini to the test with some 4K editing. I edited this video using the free version of Da Vinci Resolve and it boggles my mind what you get for free. The M2 Pro Mac Mini held up great when editing 4K videos on Final Cut and Premiere Pro so in this video, let’s see how it handles Da Vinci Resolve. If you’re looking to pick up the M2 Pro Mac Mini, you won’t be disappointed, especially if you want to edit with this free version of Resolve.

    This video was edited on Resolve and exported in 3 minutes and 4 seconds. Also, the stuttering while scrubbing was probably because I was screen recording while editing.

    I've been using a MacBook Air M1 for some very simple video editing, and I am going to trade it in for an M2 Pro with a slightly higher than base config. DaVinci Resolve is my platform of choice because I'm a cheapskate, but also, it's powerful enough for what I need. This video has persuaded me that I am indeed making the right decision.

    HI Matt, Really appreciate this community based video.
    Just curious as to whether I should end up buying the 16gb Unified Memory vs the 32Gb memory. If it was on any other machine I would go with 16 and swap it out later but apple have been a bit annoying in making it very hard to swap out. Additionallly, from what I have read and heard, unified memory is a whole lot better than RAM.
    I would like the unit to be able to handle 4k editing using final cut pro and davinci resolve free at 120 or 144fps max as I am looking to become a small content creator but also edit my photos as a side hobby. That is my max performance usage. As a result, I am getting the m2 pro variant but sticking with lowest storage as external storage is cheaper for very comparable speeds.
    In your case, do you think my purchase makes sense or whether I should end up with 32 gb RAM. It costs $360 more since I am a student which roughly translates to £284 at the current market rate. Do you think I should spend the extra money or is it not necessary? It also goes a way in slightly future proofing it as I plan to keep it for the next 8 years or so. a
    I would greatly appreciate your opinion. Thanks

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  Год назад

      If you have the budget for it, absolutely go with the 32GB memory. Like you said, you can’t upgrade that in the future versus storage you can always use external. With that being said for your use, what you’re getting will be enough. GPU heavy stuff like visual graphics and noise reduction might strain your machine a little bit that’s if you’re doing 4K and turning off rendering. Another thing to keep in mind though is that if you do enable rendering, it’ll speed up performance when editing, however, your storage takes a hit cause the rendered cache eats up storage fast!

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  7 месяцев назад

      Yes it does to a certain extent. The base SSD configurations have a slower SSD than the configurations with 512gb and up. But also the 16gb of RAM will absolutely be better than 8gb. When your Mac uses up all memory, it’ll use swap memory where it’ll use your SSD for extra memory…this will strain your SSD in the long run. So having minimum 16gb of RAM is necessary if you’re doing intensive tasks like editing.

    Hey! I bought Mac Mini M2 Pro 16GB RAM / 512GB SSD and I've got a problem. DaVinci Resolve is working perfect but when I downloaded Final Cut (trial), the program is stuttering all the time. Videos are open with 6 second delay and program is glitching (rainbow spining wheel). It's very frustrating.
    DaVinci Resolve is opening in 10 seconds, it is normal for new mac?
    Do you have any ideas why it's happened like this?

    • @mattchungz

      Not sure why that’s happening you, maybe because it’s a trial of FCP? DVR takes a bit to open if it’s not cached so that’s normal. 10 secs sounds about right. I’ve experienced that with all editors when doing a fresh open

      @mattchungz  11 месяцев назад

      Yup I think even just the M2 will handle it no issues. However, I would recommend upgrading to the Pro to at least future proof yourself when you start editing 4K footage. The M2 can still handle 4K but just barely and when you start color grading and all, that’s when it’ll start to slow down. So my recommendation is minimum M2 Pro and if upgrading the RAM is in the budget, do that. Pay to upgrade storage last if you still have budget because you can always edit off external SSDs.

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  11 месяцев назад

      No worries at all. I’d go with the M2 Pro base because it already comes with 16gb RAM as it’s base whereas on the M2, you’d have to pay to upgrade to 16gb. So if your budget only allows for the base M2 Pro, go for that. You’re going to get better overall performance with a better CPU than just having more RAM. I haven’t experienced much slow down with my machine, except when I’m throwing heavy effects on 4K footage and I’m not auto rendering and caching. So the fact that I disabled auto render and I can still mostly edit 4K smoothly speaks how powerful the raw performance of the M2 Pro is. If I enabled auto render, it can probably handle anything I throw at it but it would eat up storage space really fast.

    • @mattchungz
      @mattchungz  6 месяцев назад +1

      That’s a very similar build to my PC. On the free version, most of the rendering is done with the CPU. Going to studio will enable you to have your GPU handle more of the rendering so it can render much faster. If you’re going to hold off on buying the studio version, I would upgrade your CPU to either the 5800x or 5900x. Though I’ve heard 5800x runs hotter cause it’s pretty much an overclocked 5700. So most people recommend the 5900x. That way your CPU will be beefy enough to handle most of your rendering with the free version. But if you purchase the studio version, that build can still handle the rendering especially with the 3060 card. Hope that helps

    • @mattchungz

      macs use 50% of the ram all the even if you’re idle
      that’s cache files
      and the reason why it doesn’t lag is because of the swap memory which can shorten the lifespan of an ssd but 16/512 can last for 14 years (the ssd)
      so it’ll be good
      i’ve the same m2 pro mac mini
      talking about the thermal throttling rumors…
      i had blender on and i was creating a subway scene with a lot of objects
      besides blender in my background i had chrome open with 75 tabs
      discord app
      visual studio code, rendering a react app
      the power usage was 0.38 Watts
      the temperature was 42 degree celsius
      it never went above 45 degrees and the room temperature was 33
      the fans never turned on
      and the cpu usage was only 5% including the system which was consuming only 1%
      i forgot about the memory but i’m sure that it was using some swap but yeah macs are the best in terms of RAM management (macOS)
      another thing to consider is your monitor
      macOS has scaling issues. if you buy a 4k monitor and you want the res to be 4k then you’ve to sacrifice a bit of GPU power if you do GPU intensive tasks

    My M2 Macbook Air playback speed change from 40fps~50fps to 2-3fps playback after I color grade a full clip of maximum 30s sequence. Bypassing the color node will do almost nothing.
    Exporting should be the last thing or our concerns on a modern machine with build-in H.264 encoder.

      I mean, whether you’re "properly" grading the video or not, you’re still putting load on the processor. But also, I still graded the video to my liking afterwards and didn’t have any issues.
      In my past videos and tests on the other editors, I mentioned that I don’t do animations and CGI and know nothing about it so I wouldn’t be using effects in the Fusion tab all that much. My tests and videos really are for people creating videos at the same capacity as me.
      Regarding your M2 MacBook Air, there are two major points that separate my machine from yours. First is you have the base M2 versus I have the M2 Pro. Second is you have the MacBook Air, which has no built in fan and so cooling is abysmal on that machine. Hence why you’re experiencing major throttling. If you’re doing heavy editing on 4K footage on a MacBook, you need the Pro at minimum just for the cooling benefits over the Air as the Air isn’t designed for heavy lifting.
      Lastly I disagree about exporting time not being a concern with modern machines having built in H264 encoding. I have a custom built PC that’s a couple of years old. On the same edits, they take about 10-15 mins longer to encode than my Mac Mini. That’s an eternity and time is of the essence if you are getting paid for your time as an editor or videographer.
      At the end of the day, the M2 Pro Mac Mini will be more than enough for most people but that doesn’t mean it’s the be all end all Mac for editing. I don’t expect it to be buttery smooth for everything you throw at it, otherwise if that was the case, why would anyone need to spend more for the Mac Studio or Mac Pro.

      @@mattchungz 1) When I said exporting time is not concern I said it because most of the time you spend hours and hours scrolling back and forth on the timeline with a slower machine and not on exporting time. The amount of time can be double if suffer on playback speed.
      2) Idk what is your previous PC spec was but if you GPU don’t have at least single H264 encoder then that might be the culprit. Of course modern Apple M-series all come with dual-H264 encoders that’s the main reason why I said to you that’s the last thing you need to be concern. Even a base M1 Macbook Air got dual-encoders. Unless we are shifting to AV1 in a near future as a standard. (RUclips have already started)
      3) And I also experience severe performance drop editing 1080p 8-bit video AFTER GRADING. Not even a single clip with a Fusion effect on it. Keep in mind I’m not even using more than 8-nodes. Not to mention those who are using NR or Glow will suffer the most. I try to avoid them as much as I can. My point being a base machine should handle 1080p video flawlessly but not they can’t. They can’t handle the load after you apply a grade on them. Render cache will help but again it does not solve all the problems.
      4) You should take my comment as a constructive criticism and not be offended by it. Of course I know you’re using Pro chip but for your viewers they want to see how it will perform in real life if you’re using it as how a video editors will use them. I don’t think someone who opted for M1/M2 Pro chip is an amateur to begin with. It can be a deciding factor for them to decide whether on not to spend on $2500 machine if Pro M-series chip can handle the task for their type of workload or project.

      Definitely wasn’t offended by your comment, I apologize if my response seemed like I was!
      I still think export time is a major factor. You can spend hours editing and at that point it’s kinda like yeah what is another 10-15 mins. But one example of why export time matters is say you export and then pick up on an issues or mistake, or you need to do a quick fix for the client and turn around fast to provide the revision. Waiting 15 mins versus 2 mins is huge. Still something I appreciate on every export I do on this machine compared to what I’ve always had in my past.
      On my PC, I have the RTX 3060ti. Could have also just been the horrendous performance out of Premiere but major difference in performance between my two machines. Granted, I only have the Ryzen 5 5600x and can use an upgrade on the CPU.
      I still think the performance hits you’re taking could be from thermal throttling unless you’ve used a different machine. I personally never edited on an Air and only MBP or XPS for laptops and I’ve never had any issues editing 1080p.
      But again, no offence taken. Always appreciate comments for constructive feedback or a healthy debate from time to time 🙂

      @@mattchungz No problem sir. Appreciated that.
      And as for that GPU I believe even the most powerful Ampere series have single H264 encoders and I see where you’re coming from. You literally double the speed of your export on your M-series chip.
      Nvidia introduced dual-encoders recently on their Ada Lovelace lineup so yeah building a new PC now can be as good as buying a Mac.
      What I wish for was on my original post is that. I wish someone especially a big youtubers will change their methodology when dealing with video editing and 3D rendering apps. Exporting time “only” test can be very misleading at most. If you read any thread on Reddit so many people suffer “while” doing the job instead of “after” finishing the job. You see there’s a youtube suggesting that you can run Blender smoothly by only using an exporting metric. What they don’t know is that the most crucial thing is the viewport performance (similarly to editing timeline). It will take you forever to do you job if you viewport performance run at 5-10fps.
      As for exporting you can hit enter and take a coffee break, and that’s the reason why I said it the last thing you’ll need to concern an editor. Btw we can all disagree as not everyone run into a same problems.

      Yeah everyone has different use cases and different scenarios. I think all you can do is watch as many reviews as you can and take what you can from them to make an informed decision. And yeah everyone can agree to disagree too haha. It’s all subjective and just personal opinion. But thanks for watching and for your comment!

    Hey are you sure you used 10bit video files!?. As the free version doesn’t support 10bit files,you have to purchase the full resolve suite for that!. I tried too put my s5 10bit files into the free resolve version last week and it didn’t work!. All the big channels reference you’ll need the paid version to edit 10bit also. I mean if you’ve found a way to edit 10bit files on the free version that’s amazing and I’d love to know how as it’s flipping expensive and annoying thst I’ll have to buy it.

      Yep, I filmed my clips in 4K 60fps XAVC S 10 bit 422 color. I wasn’t sure if the free Resolve would work either because I read about the lack of support for it but they worked. And Resolve even showed the 422 option. So not sure if they’re supported now or something to do with the formats they accept or if I’m missing something and I’m wrong. But seems like they worked for me. Let me look into this a bit more, my files, and what Resolve is showing. I’ll get back to you on it

      @@mattchungz hey omg that’s literally amazing!. I’ll try it tomorrow also, omg seriously if you’ve discovered it somehow supports 10bit for free you’ve literally saved me and unknown amounts of people £300!. I’ll literally recommend your channel and highlight this video everywhere I can. I mean I don’t have ant following lol so not sure who’ll listen to me. But yea my gosh. It makes sense for black magic design to involve 10bit in the free version. As it brings more people to the software and in turn will then upgrade to the full pro suite version for all the other features!. Locking 10bit behind the paywall is stupid because ya they’re loosing users that’ll later buy the full version.

      I hope it’s true and I’m not missing anything! I know my clips are 10 bit 422, that’s for sure. So I’m not sure if you can edit but can’t export in 10 bit or if it’s not supported at all. But I know my clips are 10 bit and I’ve been able to add and export with no issues. I’ll look into it a bit further and let you know!

      So I confirmed that the footage on my A7IV is 422 10 bit. I also pulled in 10 bit footage from my Air 2s drone. Free Resolve 18 took them all in without any issues. I've been getting mixed answers:
      - Free DVR doesn't accept any 10 bit footage and only audio shows up
      - Free DVR takes in all footage that Studio does but won't output in 10 bit
      - Free DVR accepts 10 bit footage from certain codecs
      In my project settings, video bit depth is set to 10 bit under video monitoring. Proxy, Optimized, and Render Cache formats are all set to ProRes 422 HQ.
      Other than that, I'm not seeing anything else. I'm not entirely sure if maybe it's accepting 10 bit but only allows you to edit within an 8 bit space? Only way to tell is if you really push your grading and see if color and details start falling apart. I never ran into that.
      It's worth noting that the free version of Resolve has different codec support depending on whether you're on PC or Mac and apparantly on Mac, there's more support. Also seems like others with the A7IV aren't able to import their footage into the Free DVR, even though I'm able to. This really is all over the place. It's leading me to think that it mostly depends on your machine and BlackMagic having different support for different computers.
      My A7IV footage is filmed in XAVC HS codec and uses HEVC/H265 encoding. Others have said that there are more restricted support for 10 bit H264 footage. My drone footage is also H265 when recording 10 bit.

      @@mattchungz same thing with me. I could edit my Fujifilm XT-3 F-LOG 10 bit h.265 4:2:0 in my past project. Then i read some comment online said DVR free version doesn't accept 10 bit files, so i'm a little confused now.
