The lowbrow town, with its dark atmosphere and noise amounted to another character in this film. Reminded me of a number of towns I have seen directly outside of military bases; and reminds me of much I have read about Phenix City in its heyday.

Interesting! You've probably seen it, but just in case you haven't, check out 'The Phenix City Story (1955)'. Eddie's Noir Alley intro/outro is on this channels 2022 Noir Alley playlist (Oct 9).

Such an awesome film. I love this one. Robert Ryan nailed it in this role so much. I'm usually not into "boxing films", but the scenes inside the ring are so raw and intense, and so is the entire atmosphere of the film as well.

'Sweet' film on the 'sweet science'. The Set-Up isn't just one of the best boxing films, right up there with Fat City and The Raging Bull, but one of the best film noirs! Imho. Ryan is simply outstanding, as is the supporting cast. George Tobias and Percy Helton as the shady corner men are insanely inspired. Audrey Totter was definitely a real coup. Wise was an excellent , versatile director. What a film! 👍👏👏👏👏

Nice contrast! Ha-hah! Wise also directed the first Star Trek movie, just to add to the mix.

How about The Day the Earth Stood Still? Or The Haunting? Or West Side Story? And many others. Robert Wise was a brilliant filmmaker.
