In regards to your one gripe of not being able to suicide into the next cycle, a function just like that actually exists. The space man lounging in a hammock will teach you how to meditate if you ask him how he is so relaxed. Meditating lets you immediately skip into the next cycle.

What Outer Wilds has that other adventure/survival games don't is the removal of unnecessary frustration. Each twenty minute playthrough has me excited for the next. You never feel defeated but inspired. You find yourself laughing at the mistake you've made and learn from it when you restart. That's Outer Wilds greatest tool - knowledge, and the key to solving the cataclysm. I can recall misplacing a jump and falling into a blackhole; only to be jettisoned to the other side of the galaxy. Finding derelict ruins with secrets to tell, as well as the cause of the cataclysm passing right by me. I chuckled to myself. Sure, I had uncovered something important, but I was floating in the vastness of space while my ship was too far to reach. I gained another piece to the puzzle and continued on my wonderfully strange journey.

Auto piloting to a planet and hit by an asteroid requiring me to get out and fix it, which I do seconds before it explodes propelling me out into space ✔️
Keenly jumping out of my ship to explore a ruin to find I hadn’t put my space suit on ✔️
Moon jumping around a planet at such speed I fatally crash into a cliff ✔️
Getting distracted whilst flying and get my ship stuck in a tree to then die from the fall whilst trying to get out ✔️

The lack of direction may be a turnoff to some but to those of us that see us through will be left with something that pops up in our mind from time to time. If you talk to Gabbro about dealing with dying all the time, he will teach you meditation, then you can reset your time loop from the pause menu.

Got this on Gamepass. It’s worth the asking price with one huge caution as follows:
If you are the type of person who needs kills and leveling up to stay interested... this is not for you. The lure in this game is revealing the mystery, solving puzzles and exploration. If that appeals to you, it’s worth the buy.

I think what I especially love about this game is that every part feels connected and considered in design. There are few plot holes or unexplained things. Even things that early in, I thought.. How does that even work?, turn out to be extremely well explained.
Spoiler free small example: I didn't realize that the small crystal in your ship is a gravity crystal that keeps you upright all the time. That's so simple and cool but those details are so well thought out! I love that the world feels entirely consistent and internally logical.
The one question I don't that gets answered (correct me if I missed something) is why you and Gabbro are activated with the statues in the first place.

I'm finally getting around to playing this after hearing about it on the Castle Superbeast podcast and man I wish I had heeded their warnings about going into this game blind. I'm still discovering plenty on my own, but there are a couple things from that podcast and another video as well that I would have loved to find out for myself. I feel like I skipped over a bunch of early-game areas and almost unwittingly jumped to more late-game secrets. About 3-4 hours in and I still haven't talked to any of the other astronauts besides the guy on the moon, and I haven't been to any of the other normal planets. Yet I've been to the space station around the storm planet and have been investigating the Twins.
Still, I probably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place were it not for getting the hard sell, so I guess it all comes out in the wash.
One thing I will say as a random side note: this is probably one of the only games where your piloting gets *worse* the longer you play it. Careful and gentle touchdowns give way to casually tossing your ship towards the nearest planet as you realize how much punishment it can take and how little time you have to give a shit about whether or not you can leave the planet anyway.

Bought this game on the basis of this review, and my word: it is great.
It has the ability of feeling so large and yet you can rocket around it so quickly once you know where you’re going that the 20min constraint starts to feel generous.
I also love that you can just jump right in and start digging, each clue hinting at another, or just fluffing out the narrative - which is excellently written.

The game has a few smaller flaws, especially towards the end of the game when it can be VERY bad at explaining what you COULD do next. I got stuck for many hours with no "there is more to explore here" hints from the Ship Log. It also feels like an oversight that we, the player, don't get an instrument. But all in all, it's an absolutely fantastic game!

I really liked the video, my only issue is that I think 10:20 is a bit of a spoiler.
The entire game revolves around translating text from a long-dead civilization. You can infer from "99% of the people you are reading about are long since dead"
that there is someone you are reading about that ISN'T dead.

    • @rockpapershot

I think I was probably thinking of the few texts around the galaxy from living characters, but, of course, they don't need to be translated. I got a free preorder for this game when I watched E3 on mixer a year or 2 ago.
Originally it said its release date on the store said it was coming out in like 2799 or something like that.
Then it disappeared from the store entirely and I figured the entire project was cancelled. But i left it in my games and apps sections as a token. Something most people wouldnt have since it's a game that no longer exists. It stayed this way for several months.
But then recently its "pre-ordered" marker reappeared. It's back on the store. And suddenly people are playing this game. And now I care about it and am actually looking forward to playing it, something I thought would never come to be.
Last I checked it still said "pre-ordered" but once I get the chance, I'll definitely hop on and give it a go

You mentioned you wanted to remove your helmet so you could die quickly, but Gabbro on Giant's Deep can teach you to meditate. This acts as a "reset" button because you're literally meditating until the universe explodes, except you just close your eyes and open them back at the start.

In reference to the one thing you would change about the game, the 'manual removal of the helmet' - if you speak to the guy on giants deep after a few loops, he teaches you how to 'meditate' which functions as a reset switch for that loop.

Outer Wilds is literally Space done right. No other game has come close to making something feel as vast, terrifying and dangerous as Outer Wilds has. KSP is nice for simulating how to get a ship into orbit, but that doesn't have storms on planets. Elite Dangerous may be about exploring an intergalactic community, but when was being an over glorified mailman a decent representation of space?
Outer Wilds is as close to space in the comfort of our own homes, and it sure as hell doesn't make me feel comfortable (love it to bits though).

@@seraslain962 If you're still looking for similar, non-space related games, then games like Journey, Flower or any other game by Thatgamecompany, and spiritual successors. Sure, they may not be space related and some lack any real danger, but the general theme and overall feel are somewhat similar.
Obviously, if you've played them already, then you can discount this suggestion, but there's one more game I can recommend. Naissance, which is similar to the manga called Blame! operates similarly and the best part is that it's free to download.

    • @extragarb
      @extragarb 4 года назад +3

@@diegorabr Yeah, I think the strength of the quantum objects/phenomena in Outer Wilds is that the quantum rules are developed and well defined, yet so unlike our normal macro reality that physically and intellectually exploring them is just exciting and engaging. Portal is a good example of such a game. The portal mechanic in those games is both well defined and elegantly simple, but portal physics are so exotic and fun to explore that you can make a whole game centered on the joy of learning how to "think with portals."
I agree that they could make a great puzzle game by deep diving into the macroscopic quantum mechanics. They are similarly exotic and fun to learn about.

For anyone jumping into this game recently, please note that there are two functions that help with the passing of time or resetting the loop. There's an NPC on the water planet that is going through the same time loop you are, if you talk to them they will teach you how to "Meditate" to reset the loop. You can also go to the campfire at the beginning of the game to pass time if you want to revisit a planet later in the loop without waiting for events to happen.

To all those complaining about not being able to play this for the first time 'twice' - here's a way that you can.
Play it stoned. I'm being serious. Marijuana always gives a sense of J'aime Vu when playing video games, and I am so taken aback on how something so simple can produce such extraordinary experiences.
Play it after a bowl, after 2, after a joint, after 2, after and edible, then 2... they'll all be different experiences, and I promise you it will be magical. Whatsmore, the memory loss from getting high means you can repeat the process indefinitely. I have done this with multiple video games, BF1, GTAV, Hitman, Assassin's Creed... the list goes on. I promise you that you will have an amazing experience, and it may change the way you play games forever.
