Only remembered after all out, in that first promo that Swerve interupted, Hangman was talking about donating money to a school charity, and from that moment he managed to spiral all the way down
Hangman is AEW'S Dolph Ziggler! Main eventer, incredible talent. Yet back burner because Tony Kahn push wwe guys. Wardlow, Brian Cage, Luchasurias. Even big Cass, monsters used as side kicks now. Learn to book your stars. Watching orange defend the belt every night completely injured was done to death!! AEW NEED TO GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING!!!
I’ve never thought of Hangman as the heart and soul of AEW. But, you have some great points. I personally think the heart and soul of AEW are all the original wrestlers and fan base. There have been great acquisitions, since the beginning such as Toni Storm, Mariah May, Ospreay, and Swerve. Also, the creative team have greatly improved their storytelling over the years.
Thing is, we don’t want 15 matches in a row of Hangman vs. Swerve. We would much prefer the epic match they put on at All Out every couple of years with a few weeks build via a title shot or long term storyline. I had no problem with them being split up for a few months while Swerve got his deserved championship run and a few great matches to show how good he really is. Now they can leave their rivalry for a few months and hopefully Swerve will return and show how much he respects Hangman and save him from another “problem” down the line.
When I first started watching AEW, Hangman was the main reason why. AEW during that time was on a different level. The matches, the stories, and how much better it was during WWE at that time (even though WWE was hot trash at that point in time, but it helped that AEW was so good as well) Hangman stood out to me the most. His storyline from being drunk cowboy to his redemption arc to becoming World Champion was absolutely beautiful. He became one of my favorite wrestlers and the one true babyface in the industry. After the CM Punk situation, he definitely lost his way and what to do with him. Tbh that is why I also agree that his feud with Swerve, especially after All-Out helped his career a lot and put him back on track. Great video and great points.
The problem with Swerve being a badass anti-hero babyface, is they DID blatantly try to put sympathy on him with the "childhood home" angle. Can you imagine Stone Cold in the Attitude Era being shown buying his old family ranch or something, and Kane and Paul Bearer or The Undertaker burn it all down, leaving him crying in the ring?
Why would I imagine that? They are two very different people. Also, Paul Bearer is a pretty wacky, broad character, didn't he perish when murdered by the Dudley's with a cement truck?
Now they need to apply this level of detail into a couple more storylines along side their banger matches which are almost guaranteed and aew will be back to its prime
AEW had some missteps to say the least, but the Hangman/swerve feud has been pretty amazing. All In was a overall great show, All out might have been too much for some people but it got people talking. Is it perfect no, but neither is WWE or other promotions which i can also enjoy. Seriously though, difference between having an opinion like mine and being a toxic troll because you dont like something and dont want anyone else to enjoy it. Currently Hangman evolved from lovable loser who finally got confidence and won at life, to a mashup of Ranfy Orton burning houses and "I hate you Cena!" Edge. Bit of Ambrose obsessed witb Rollins too.

Swerve also threatened "atleast kidnapping" while standing next to "Hangman's" son's crib. I suppose anyone who has kids (and probably most w/o as well) sees that as a far worse transgression than burning a shack down. Either way a construct that allows people to root for whomever they want with good-enough reason.

His character is one note at best, his wrestling is mediocre at best, they now book him against wrestlers who can carry him to a good match, The whole CM Punk thing exposed just how mediocre he is.
I like the Page/Swerve story but I don't really consider this or many stories in AEW besides Storm/May a long term storyline. AEW does what I consider to be old school anime storytelling. They create a story people are interested in, then they just kind of stop that story for a while and add filler, then they continue it later after the filler gets done. And sadly Page and Swerve's storyline did fall victim to that as do many of the AEW "longterm storytelling".
