- By the mid-1970's 'The Pirates' were, without doubt, the most popular act on the club circuit in the UK with their reputation rapidly spreading throughout Europe and Scandinavia. However the band had first emerged in 1959 as a backing group to the late, great Johnny Kidd with whom they enjoyed a total of nine chart singles. Their re-emergence as a power rock/rhythm and blues trio took the live circuit by storm and their two Warner Brothers albums 'Out Of Their Skulls' and 'Skull Wars' received outstanding reviews. This footage captures the band delivering the goods in their natural habitat with no holds barred!
Songs featured:
1. I Can Tell
2. Gibson, Martin, Fender
3. Shakin' All Over
4. You Don't Own Me
5. Lonesome Train
6. Talking About You
Recorded live at Dingwalls, Camden Lock, London 1977
Mike Green - Lead and rhythm guitar, backing vocals
Johnny Spence - Bass guitar and vocals
Frank Farley - Drums and backing vocals
Mick Green, possibly the most underrated, unappreciated guitarist ever!
Hendrix rated Mick...but I know exactly what you mean..he wasnt showy doing speed solos which bore me anyway..he just has a great feel..I must've seen this band half a dozen times between 77 and 79 and finding this great bit of film as reignited my passion for this great band..I was a punk back then and punks loved the Pirates. Real sad to hear of Mick and Frank's passing..they were lovely guys..met em several times.
100% !!!
Not by me, it is!
Massive influence on Wilko Johnson.
@@wayneelliott7011 I can tell 😀
First Band I ever saw. Mick Green is to this day the LOUDEST guitarist ever.
Quality band, quality venue. ❤
they had more power and energy than a lot of the punk bands at the time. Mick Green was such an exciting guitar player.
Absolutely Steve. The great Mick Green etc..
I saw Generation X follow them- I was a GenX fan but they looked pathetic after The Pirates.
Went to see the punk bands in Reading '78. The Pirates came on and blew them away. The Jam came on and said words to the effect - 'how the **** do you follow that?'
POWER trio.
So where the heck is Mick Green on the greatest guitarist lists? Fantastic!
At the top.
he3's on my list alright
Right up there buddy. Smokin hot rhythm guitar. Nothing better.
i remember seeing this when i was 16, and it blew me away...and it still does as i am a pensioner
So great to see a R'n'R gig with people in the audience actually dancing their asses off! 👍
And not standing there like dicks with their fuckin phones in their hands like today …❤❤
What a powerful wall of rock'n'roll sound...
I had the pleassure of playing a song with Mick on a recording session in London in 1993.. Very nice guy and a super guitar player.. Met him a few years later över a beer after a Pirates gig here in Stockholm.. Sadly the last time we met.. He was a great inspiration to me.. R.I.P Mick. 👍
Rocktastic! I was late teens when The Pirate were showing Punk and New Wave bands what high energy music was all about. Quite simply the best live band I have ever seen.
This performance is awesome. Maybe this band was THE power-trio that ever existed.
I have their 1977 “ Out of their Skulls”titled LP, a MASTERPIECE in my opinion.
This is absolutely ripping.
One of the very best live bands I have ever seen, around 1978.Mick Green the complete guitarist.
I saw the Pirates along with Wilko Johnson a few times at Dingwalls, pure class. Long live pub rock!
We used to go there all the time to see Dr. Feelgood. RIP Wilko.
Me too!!. We used to meet up at the Brecknock in Holloway rd then the 253 or 29 bus down to Camden
Mick on a Les Paul...Brilliant band, full credit to them as a band, all working their bollocks off. I'm just happy and privileged that I got the chance to see them. It changed my guitaring forever after that. Superb band
Les Paul? It's a Fender Telecaster with humbucker...
@@lazlokovacs2263 Watch the whole video. He's on a Les Paul for Shakin' All Over.
The best rock'n'roll band of ever !
100%
I saw them at the Marquee when it was still in Wardour Street. They were great... but a few in the audience thought they were a punk band and gobbled at them! There was a scuffle and we sorted that out. Mick Green was a brilliant guitarist ... A real power trio
Truly outstanding. Those wonderful days of being inches from the band, ears splitting, sweat pouring out the beer before the next pint, telecaster twanging joy!
One of the most rocking trio's I've ever seen in my life.!!!.
Just what my musical soul needs .
Mick Green nearly snaps that telecaster in half.. awesome controlled energy..
"I can tell" as opener - storming hot. Roll over Bo Diddley!
The pirates what a ROCKIN Good band. 🎸🎸🎸👍 Love it👍
Dear god this kicks so much ass!
those guys are GREAT ! Mick Green 's a true original , energic , efficient, and talentuous guitar player !!!
If there was only a way to have captured this man's sweat, we could've eradicated thirst in Africa.
This was a legendary show Telecaster Custom is the most badass looking guitar ever.I got one after watching Mick !
OOHH the agony and the ecstasy !!! Is that Mick Green, spankin` that plank.I try to play jazz guitar now but mick and the band just do it for me.Makes me wanna go out and do it all again.R.I.P.Mick..You were phenomenal !!!And so were the band!!!
Try and do it all again i mean.I could never sound like this.Band ,or Mick Green .Pity he is no longer with us as i would have plagued him for lessons. What a player.Rhythm and lead all in one.Very difficult to do well.
Bloody hell, another killer band I missed at the time.
The Original and the Best.
Saw them circa 65.
Love to have seen these play 3 brilliant musicians Mike Green brilliant guitarist
Damn... how could someone like Mick Green escape me until today? This some fu*+ing brilliant guitar work. ❤🔥
He was sensational.
Probably Britain's greatest rock band ever pre Zep ❤❤❤❤
I saw them in Gothenburg in the end of the seventies - unforgettable! 🎼🎸
The Kings of British Rock.
Robert Cubinelli ......Got that Right!
**Led Zeppelin
@@mustangjusty3772
Robert Plant once said there would have been no Led Zeppelin without The Pirates :):)
Music in it's most finest element!!!
Sad to hear the news that Frank Farley has passed. RIP Frank one of me very early inspirations.
Ted Dyer ....didn’t know he passed away.
that's real rock'n roll-great - love the guitar of mister green
Nobody on the Planet ever rocked as hard as these guys
There's a few others
I saw them at one of their Dingwall gigs around the time that this was recorded. I might have actually been at this one!!
Thanks a million for posting this. I have very happy memories of the time, including seeing this gig and several others by the Pirates at Dingwalls. One of the great "Power Trios".
amazing !
The Guvnors no arguing 🎸👍🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥰
This is just as if I was back in Tiffany's club in Edinburgh 1977. Up close and personal.
My Goodness, look around 1,45, could that be Steve Marriott & maybe even Peter Grant in the front row on the right hand side of the screen !
That could actually be Marriott, though the other guy is too small to be Grant.
I used to go to their London gigs at this time...without doubt an awesome live act.
Magnificent! - many thanks for posting this, it's great to have the entire set together on one clip.
Thanks love the Mick Green Neck action. Lonsome trains a killer.
That is so totally BADASS!
How I never heard of this band before ??? Great stuff.
This needs 100,000,000,000 views
fantastic footage thank you. saw them in 78 @ bristol poly... awesome live band
Was there too! Great night!
Ici se résume résume pourquoi j'aime le rock'n'roll le vrai ,le pur & dur ! The Pirates enfin des bandes vidéo !
I enjoyed this. I turned it right up. Great stuff.
How did you enjoy when the commercials kicked in? 🤣
@@carvinblack No problem for me. I pay for the Premium service so I don't get them. Really worth it as they are annoying.
Thé pirates top groupe rock n'Roll
Good honest Rock'n'roll
Just pure class
So good. I have the double CD collection.
Macho rock at its best!
Ed Sullivan would have shit his pants.
Didn't know Elvis could play guitar this good.
I get it about Mick Green and how great he was, but that singer/bass player doesn't get enough credit.
That's Johnny Spence. Keeping that bassline taut, while singing, at that pace.. Phew!
The drummer is Frank Farley. Frank was a *beast* on the kit, and much respected.
They created quite a legacy.
I'm glad someone mentioned the drummer because he is a massive force! @@VintageSG
Raw power heaven
Rock'n'Roll's not dead
I only wish I could get the VOLUME louder!
+rpm451 the same!!
I had it crankin' through my stereo. About blew the speakers when it went to commercials. Lol
Mick Greenはもっと評価されるべきギタリストだと思う。
モデルは違うけれど彼に憧れて買ったテレキャスターは今も自分の愛機。
Bless ya!
молодцы ребята !!! вот это Рок н Ролл
Thanks for posting this amazing footage. Does anyone know if it was filmed for TV? Reminds me of the Jam live at the 100 Club footage.
Brilliant but please remove the adverts in the middle of the video disrupting songs. Unneeded and ruins it.

Such a tight band!
We were lucky to have great bands like The Pirates, starting in 1959, and Dr Feelgood in the 70s. There were other balls to the wall revival rockers like Ducks Deluxe, and the Tyla Gang to enjoy too
not bad these 6'T's & 5T's classic rock'n roll songs , indeed !. ( better mid-6'T's days performance )
熱い!!熱すぎる!!!!!!
❤
Jesss! 💗 Markku&Huns 🤗
Can you believe someone actually gave this the thumbs down?
+Uncle Dave must be Jedward or the Pet Shop Boys (that last "band"...yuk!)
+djangorheinhardt who gave it the thumbs down i mean!
+Langelier Fabrice Thankyou !!!!!!!
I suspect that a many an aspiring punk or metal guitarist went to see The Pirates.
Пираты! Ура!
Oh, I'm sorry, it indicates it at the bottom, by changing the song and it's called Shakin 'All Over-thank you
you're welcome
Blistering!!
check 90's punky rnb outfit Charlie croker and the providers on you tube, tracks like can't get enough, the croker, bubble car, cab driver and others are awesome
You can learn how to play rhythm and lead by watching Mick Green
Шикарно, и каждый удар барабанщика, каждая нота басиста говорит о том, что вы полезли на англосаксов? Будьте добры, получите от англосаксов сполна. Начинают получать. Очень нервенно.
What is the third song called?
You don't own me!
shut your eyes this could be the Cramps
+Martin Harrison WHAAAAAAAT?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Who are The Craps??? This is the mighty Pirates....
ha ha, I said Cramps not Craps!
Martin Harrison I know what you are getting at however, no bass guitar on the cramps early records. The Cramps are way more way out. More pshyke.
The Cramps were slower and tbh no as tight and they didn't have anyone with Mick Green's chops, they were good too, but not really comparable imo.

If your nostalgic for Dr Feelgood and Pirates stuff, Muddy Waters etc .... there’s a band of veterans called The Extras based near Merseyside who crack out a good noise for their collective age! ruclips.net/video/ps2deRkfSv4/видео.html
Check them out Live .... caught them at The Railway Inn, Nantwich last year .... great sound!
..... which is NOW OPEN after the COV 19 minor sniffle ...btw ... according to their website .... not sure when bands are playing again ... hopefully soon. Good place to develop your ‘herd immunity’ .... like true rock n rollers!
(Please ... this is not a punk band .... so No Spitting!)
Quango Public Health England gets this year’s award for the band billed as “No future hopefuls 2020”
No group did "in yer face" rock and roll better with the possible exception of Dr Feelgood & it was a fact that Wilko Johnson was greatly influenced by the shamefully underrated Mick Green
Not that good
Yeah it’s really not
