  • In this video, I walk you through all of the major changes that occured over the course of the 4L60E's lifcycle from 1993-2013. I start with the case differences then move to the electronics, valve body changes and spacer plate variations. I then wrap with a summary run-down of all the major changes for each vintage of 4L60E and discuss interchange rules and adaptation, where applicable.

    Hi Nick Good morning, Great Info!!, Maybe i am the first one, I bought a brand new left over 2009 4L65E Trany for a 2 wheel drive Truck for my Project car, At the time Not knowing anything about the Change from 08 to 09, 15 pin plug to 17, My kit and set up is a E38 ECM and T42 TCM with a 2008 "Truck" operating system, My Motor is a 2006 LS2 "Vette" Motor from a wrecked corvette, The Reason why you have to use a Truck OS when using a 4L60E series with a 58X LS motor (06 & up) is because the is No Car OS durning those years , All the cars got the 6L80 6 speed transmission, So you run a "Truck OS" E38 & T42 is the way to go, with DBW and a corvette gas pedal , Anyway my kit came with the ECM- TCM, Gas pedal and harness with the 15 pin Plug, After figuring out what transmission i actually had , i did some reasearch and made a few phone calls, even got the GM bulletin on the new 09 4L65E, So i picked up a 08 valve body and spacer plate and swaped it out , Believe it or not everything works and shifts fine, except my 4th not holding 4th if i slightly lay into it, She slipps in 4th but as mentioned before i believe its the servo, The only other thing is that i never got the car to down shift 3-2 but that could be the tune , and if i lay into her in 3rd shes a animal, She put down 700 at 15 PSI,, I have a fully built (2006) 4L70E in the basement i guess i should stop playing around with a Factory spect transmission and install the built one because of the Power she makes

      Thanks for sharing, Walter...Yes, once you go outside of the factory PCM/command and control you have a lot more flexibility when it comes to swaps as you can tune in or out different nodes based on year and sensor suite. The 08 and back VBs would never work correctly on a purely factory application but should be fine for something using non-factory transmission control programming logic. The only real differences when it comes to command/control is the elimination of the pressure switch manifold assembly and corresponding range position pressure switches...The 09+ internal mode switch performs that function.
      Yes, install the 4L70E if it's built to handle that sort of power your engine's making.

      @@nickstransmissions Hi Nick good morning, Yes i finally decided to just use the built 70E and pull the 2009 65E out of the car, i am going to reinstall the 09 VB and install a Corvette servo for the 65E because its a really solid transmission and shifts beautiful and holds the power Maybe someone can use it in a later model 2009+ truck etc, OK as far as the Built 70E that i have i bought it from a friend about 5 years ago His good friend built it for him Told him what Parts to buy, it was originally for his 2 wheel drive Trail blaser SS with 6.0L on NOS , My friend was very heavy on parts , Drag racing and a heavy foot light to light, Pretty much he broke everything he owned LOL, His friend the Builder very well knew this and threw everything you can at this 70E i have the hard parts receipts for it which had sun shell, drum , shafts etc etc, OK but this is what bothers me about this 70E, The builder was known for building really good 200's the 200R4 that came in the buick Grand Nationals , As far as the hard parts and that the 70E has 5 planets im not worried about his work when it comes to that, What i more concerned with is did he install that better faster reaction springs? Did he block off the 4th accumulator, eliminate the PWM, and also that front Pump mod , I know it sounds crazy but i really cant install it not knowing that everything was done, Im going to pull the pan and look over the VB and see whats going on, i guess ill have to pull the VB to see what he did with the 4th accumulator, Not sure exactly which servo he used but it has a completely big flat cover ,
      Walter
      Maybe you can walk me threw what

      @@nickstransmissions LOL I hear ya, Listen I know the Builder, He was a really good Transmission guy Like yourself, I havent seen him in a long time We all moved to different locations, As far as the Hard Parts, Drum, sun shell, shafts, Clutch assemblies, ETC i believe in his work, So i dont want to go that deep into her, but the Valve body and the Front pump mod "i need to know" i would think he used the better reaction springs in the case, As far as the VB and the pump, what is important that "Must" be done for a all out performance build, if you can list them so i can make a check list for when i pull the Pan and look it all over, Be muich appreciated,
      and get whatever parts it needs like that fizt all valve etc,

    Hello nick I have a 1997 trans am that has a 1995 4l60 that I changed the spacer plate and the valve body from a 02 4l60 and I also put the 97 3-2 valve in I just test drive the car tonight for the first time and it doesn’t seem to shift right.

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  27 дней назад

      Hi Warrioryfm, the changes you made (vb, spacer plate and solenoid) are correct (ie the 2002 VB, Spacer plate will work; it should have already had the same 3-2 control valve as your 97 VB) so there may be problems elsewhere in the transmission....The valve body gasket set you should be using is the white stripe set but even if you installed the non-marked set for 93-2000 spacer plate-valve body service packs, it should still function normally.

    Hey Nick,
    So I have a 2009 Chevy Tahoe 4x4 that I am trying to find a donor transmission for. From what I’ve gathered in your video it seems like I need to try to find a transmission from another 2009 year model Tahoe for it to be compatible? Or are there other compatible options? Also I’m assuming it has a 4L60 in it because whenever I put it in manual and shift through the gears. It has six gears?

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  Месяц назад +1

      Hi Wombraider, if you have 'manual' mode with six forward speeds/gears, you have a 6L80 so you'd need to either rebuild your 6L80 (check out my 6L80 playlist for details, instructions, etc) or you'd have to purchase a compatible 6L80.

      @@nickstransmissions thanks Nick I’m glad I commented! As long as I get a 6L80 should it be a direct swap or do I need to look at a specific year model? Any other suggested details? The story with the truck was the trans felt like it was slipping or searching for gears then stopped shifting It wouldn’t run over 30 mph running at 3500 ish rpm’s and was throwing check engine light traction control message etc codes were (PO700) and (PO796)

      Sorry, didnt see this but you need to make sure the TEHCM part number on any replacement trans matches yours or simply swap your TEHCM over to the replacement...That said, I wouldn't do any swaps - just rebuild yours...

    Nick, I have a question on the 3 4 gears. Is there anything that will make it slip other than being junk. I have a 1996 4l60e on a 2000 ls in a 94 gmc yukon

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  2 месяца назад

      Hi Scott, there's a laundry list of causes for 3-4 failure...Your best defense against 3-4 problems is to ensure the forward drum/shaft mating integrity is sound (no leaks - I demonstrate how to test for leaks in my 4L60E tear down videos), replacing bonded pistons with new ones, ensuring 3rd acc check ball capsule isn't leaking, replacing turbine shaft sealing rings, setting up the 3-4 clutch pack with no greater than .050 clearance (I prefer .030-.040 and install the load-release spring sets).

      Hi Leo, grab a Transgo 46-PLT-07: res.cloudinary.com/transgo/wbiss/sc/46-PLT-07.pdf. These don't require the bonded gaskets - you will want to install the gaskets with the orange striping as opposed to the white striping.

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  2 месяца назад

      That is interesting...The case itself must have only immaterial changes; technically it would work for anything all the way back to 1993 if it will retro to 1996 as there's nothing different about the 93-97 when it comes to case OAL dimensions, worm tracks in the case belly, hydraulic circuitry for the pump, servo, low-reverse, etc. The only differences in case design, apart from the move to a detachable bell and 6-bolt ext housings is the move to the pump-to-case wedge seal starting in 2004, which eliminated the large o-ring on the pump body there from 1982-2003.

      @@nickstransmissions I didn’t pay attention the first time I watched it. Now that I watched your video again, I can see that I messed up. I do have another question tho. Could you use a 05 or 06 4l60e trans to replace your 07 4l60e trans? Or does it specifically have to be a 07 to 08 trans?

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  2 месяца назад +3

      Hey Chris, you'll want a 2006 unit with a turbine speed sensor (TSS) if your current transmission also has the TSS as the PCM/TCM will be looking for it and if it doesn't see the TSS input signal (voltage) then you'll have problems. So 2007-2008 or late 2006 for trucks as the TSS was added as a mid-year update for all the 4L60Es that went into the 1/2 ton truck chassis vehicles.

      Thanks for watching, H.W. Miller...I am good with either factory or Transgo plate for a given rebuild; I will say that, based on feedback from customers, The Transgo spacer plate provides very smooth and balanced shifts as is. Much more so than the factory plates. So if looking for a smooth shifting transmission and needs a spacer plate due to excessive damage, warpage, etc then I install a Transgo plate.

    • @nickstransmissions
      @nickstransmissions  3 месяца назад

      Did you watch the videos? Particularly the valve body testing part 2: ruclips.net/video/uNJj3RH94bc/видео.html
      I explain this in detail in that video...If you have a 2001-2003 valve body, you will want to order this Fitzall valve: www.amazon.com/4L60E-Transmission-Valve-2000-2003-Non-Can/dp/B01I21T4GE
      Alternatively, you can install a Transgo shift kit (SK-4L60E) and that will also come with a valve and spring to convert your TCC PWM apply to an on-off apply.
      One other thing I should have mentioned: If your vehicle has active cylinder management / active fuel management (ACM/AFM), you will want to keep your PWM active...I don't think any 2005 vehicles had those; I believe that did not start until 2007 w/the GMT900 series trucks/SUVs/Vans. If you have a passenger car like a GTO, check with the dealership - give the parts guy the last 8 digits of your VIN and he'll tell you if your engine is an AFM/ACM engine.
