  • Back to back tech tips this week! We're plunging even further into our diagnostics journey with Lock-up failure being next on the list, and this one is a fair bit more involved than the pump diagnostics are.

Great vid ryan we alway enjoy upur knowledge. Here at our shop lately we've been seeing more misfires causeing transmission issues than anything else other than the great Ole sun shell stripping out

I agree. Sadly i feel they usually still just think its the transmissions fault. Do the same thing to a 4l80 lol

I purchased a 1993 c4 Corvette recently and the transmission was gone. I purchased a 4l60e from a 1996 c1500 a long with a micro controller from eBay to allow it to shift. No 1st or 4th gear (1st was intermittent for a short period) or lockup, that I'm aware of. I purchased solenoid A and B, hoping that helps the 1st and 4th issue. Im sure I damaged the pump on install. I made sure to seat the converter before installing but I believe it slipped on when trying to get into car. I purchased the transg-46 mod to modulate transmission pressure. Thanks for the videos, they are of great help.

Can you do a video on how to convert from 4x4 to 2wd? 4l80e or 4l60e. From what I’ve seen it’s just changing the output shaft? I’m a beginner that never took a transmission apart, but I’ve bought some manuals to do so. And I have some transmissions to practice on.

I just bought a 07 Chevy 2500 with a 6l90 2wd . The guy parked the truck in the garage and the next morning it wouldn’t move. You can hear the transmission go intro gear and reverse but it’s locked up . Even in neutral it won’t move I had to remove the driveshaft just to get it to roll . Any idea I’m thinking the torque converter or the output ring gear but I’m no expert with transmissions .

Good video I have a 04 silverado 2500hd with the 4L80 in it shifts fine but will lock up at highway speeds but a mile or two at those speeds it unlocks and will not go back to lock up. If I have my code reader it never showed any code but if I do a reset erase codes it'll lock the converter back up. Just wondering if it could be that solenoid you mentioned. I have no code at all on the engine or trans. Thanks for any info you could or will help with.

Make sure you dont have any misfires registering at speed with software as well. Most common issue with lockup at speed.

@PerformaBuiltTransmissions ok thanks I've been chasing this for a few years now. But it's not a vehicle I use everyday so I guess I overlook it at times... but thanks for the info.

02 sensors affect lockup as well. Check brake switch also. Just some extra things to look at

Will do thanks. I had 02 sensors replaced and no misfire codes so far. It locks up then when you get about 70mph it'll unlock. Of I have a scan tool hooked up even though it doesn't throw any codes by check engine light it'll still let me erase code by scan tool and it'll lock back up but usually within a mile or so it'll unlock again.. thanks for all your help I'll keep diagnosing lol

This may be as simple as adjusting the lockup values for speed and rpm. You may not have a real issue. Otherwise if your 4L80E still has the stock steel pwm tcc valve, then it may be leaking and a sonnax one should remedy that.
