2 things..... first, the saw will most likely run hot without the starter recoil cover in place. the fan fins on the flywheel will just blow air out of the opening instead of circulating air to cool the engine.... secondly, don't hold me to this, but I believe the starter springs from the Chinese 52 and 58cc saws can be easily modded to work on the spring assisted starters that mtd used...I made one work for my old craftsman 55cc saw

Good advice! I’ll never to look at the part cross reference and see if it works. It’s funny, I have a MS362C that’s like new but I just love beating this one! It just keeps going!

I have the same saw with the broken recoil. Bought it off a guy thinking it would be simple to buy a new recoil and be up and running.....not the case lol can't find a recoil anywhere so may try your setup! At least I could use the saw instead of having an expensive paperweight lol thank you for the idea!

Did you tried professional 3D printing? I have ordered one for a 10$ and it works for a half year now. You can find this part model in internet for free.

Thanks HD Kevin; please video your process. Second time it's broken on me, and I have less than 5 hours on the saw!! The manufacturer should be locked up for making such an inferior piece of crap... then discontinuing such a key replacement part!

The spring inside the plastic piece broke on mine today. 😡 I haven’t been able to find a replacement yet.

94concours I feel your pain! They discontinued them. I should have stocked up. They’re poorly made. I can’t even find a knock off or a used one. This way I can still sort of use the saw...

HD Kevin it broke at one of the hook ends of the spring. I heated it up with a propane torch and bent a new hook end for it. It works, but I have little faith in how long it may last.

@@94concours There are 2 springs I believe. Which one broke on yours? I have the same problem and think it's the inner spring of the plastic wheel. The cord retracts but doesn't engage when pulled. It just spins and retracts.

@@steveb.9808 The inner spring that winds up to engage the flywheel broke. I fixed it and so far it's working.
