- XCOM 2 War of the Chosen Gameplay is here! This is episode 44 of our Let's Play XCOM 2 War of the Chosen. Work with The Reapers, The Skirmishers, and the Templars to take down the Assassin, the Warlock and the Hunter who represent the Chosen. Thanks to 2k for early access! There are two ways to join the character pool:
1) Leave a comment below with the soldier name/biography info and I will select random comments to be added into the game as needed! Due to the fact that I'm manually creating all characters, I will handle much of the visual look. If you want to leave a defining characteristic I will try to work that in.

So.. Sparks are stupid good. First of all they got buffed, aim, and they're weapons can now be modified. ALSO THEY DON'T GET TIRED. And can be taken out injured. Oh and they shred armor, AND carry heavy weapons.

Makes that ability that has a chance to take an overwatch shot at discovered enemies not completely useless either, since now you can have more than three shots. I even had the Warlock mock me for using a machine instead of my "feeble-minded" soldiers. Right before the SPARK ran up to him and punched him to death. If you can also get the bonus that reduces the costs for the Proving Ground projects, you have easy access to really powerful soldiers.
If you're not using a Spark in WoTC, you're doing it wrong. They are that good. As mentioned, they don't get tired, can always be taken on missions, and their baseline fighting abilities have been buffed. Add to that the fact that all the added psionic and/burning damage in the game can be completely ignored.
I can't believe you let that loot rot for a 29% shot that you had no real need to try for.
I laughed when he said, "What else is he gonna do?" Uh, get the loot?!? The 29% shot took out the tree cover, though, so I guess it all worked out for the best. :)

35:20 Christopher, you got both of the shots, I just believe that XCOM is shortening the animations instead of replying actions over. You got a tag for a missed shot, and the other dealt damage. Both of them went off, just 1 animation for two. Something similar happened in your other videos a few times.

Around 7:38 that was an indicator (a small gear) showing those units would be in range for the Gremlin.
Chris: If you put AP rounds on a dude with Shredding it does double duty. They will still shred, but their attacks will bypass the armor, making them pretty damn awesome. I give it to my Grenadiers all the time.

War suit is a better Exo suit, Wraith suit is a better Spider Suit.

Uh and armor points Warmach1ne 32.. kinda important to miss. W.A.R suit has 2 armor points. And lets ya mount Powered Heavy Weapons...which I personally use ALL THE TIME cause 'shredder cannon' and 'Blaster Bomb'.
probably not in this playthrough but info for a future one. Sparks got a buff with the war of the chosen their aim has been improved and you can mod their weapons now as well. also they do not get tired and have access to the same AP system that everybody else uses. IMO they are about as good as any other base game soldier now, with some really solid utility if you build them right.

Isn't the Wraith Suit a superior version of Spider Suit and the WAR Suit the better EXO Suit? Cause if they are then probably you should queue the newer ones up as soon as possible to replace them.

It is a better suit. Unless Chris was looking at cost, I have no idea why he would have picked the lower tier equipment.
I see 2 reasons he doesn't make a better suit
1) resourses

Hey Odd, The W.A.R. Suit is better than the E.X.O. Suit, and the Wraith Suit is better than the Spider Suit. While the E.X.O. and Spider Suits were meant for when you unlocked plated armor, the W.A.R. and Wraith Suits were meant for when you unlocked Warden Armor. Just letting you know because I want you to have the highest possible advantage in the game, because you have sectopods every single mission. May the Odds be ever in your favor. 😆
My Assassin Chosen just got a bonus strength I've never seen before and Odd's Chosen so far, don't have it. I pray your chosen don't get it because it is brutal and I'm wondering how I'm going to deal with it. I won't ruin the surprise but if I see your Chosen with it, I want to say: " I can't lie to you about your chances, but you have my sympathies." Love this expansion.

quick thing: The primary candidate for AP rounds are the Gunslingers. They do little damage per shot but make up for that by getting a shitload of shots per round. That does however also mean that they get *massively* hosed by armor since it's a flat damage reduction to every shot they take. If you take a Slinger with you and there is even the remote chance of running into Sectopods / Heavy Mecs / Gatekeepers etc, always always always give the AP rounds to them.
Shadowkeeper does more damage for your sniper or the chosen hunter pistol

I've gotta say, Odd, watching your videos convinced me to finally get XCOM 2. Now, watching this War of the Chosen series convinced me to also get War of the Chosen. Worth.
I usually give AP rounds for someone with holotargeting, so he can mark the target and still have a change to give maximum potential damage, regardless of armor :)
Advent must have hacked your computer Odd, and changed the random number seed.
The Chosen attempted to sabotage the mission by crashing the game.
The Chosen Had sabotaged Odd's computer to make those misses, dodges, and fails
X-Com 2 can savescum too! "You killed my codex with a pistol? Nuh uh. Reload that save and try again."
Chris, you really should download the mod which shows the health also in numbers. Would come pretty handy, I guess. You can find it in the Workshop, though I don't recall the exact name.
It can definitely be worth it to take a low-percentage shot. You hit a 30% shot just as often as you miss a 70% shot. You shouldn't do it without good reason, but don't waste the opportunity if you don't have any great alternatives.

I have noticed that the Templars "Rend" Attack seems to be considered a "Psionic" Attack and not a "Melee" Attack, so it should still be effective against the Hunter. (Saw this a another youtuber's play through.)
As a sidenote: I like how they integrated the DLCs during the game, but I miss the story missions that kicked them of.

also yeah, the hunter's immune to melee but rend is considered a psionic attack only
Yeah, "Rend" from my Templar worked great against the Hunter
You should really upgrade the resistance ring, you could get up to 2 extra order slots.
I think his reasoning is that the remaining cards available aren't worth the supplies he'd use to upgrade the resistance ring.
AP rounds are great on Snipers to make the pistol useful against armored enemies.
Something I learned in ironman is that... if you don't have 2nd tier weapons with scope on few of them by the time spectre spawns, you are screwed 100 perc. Overwatch immune + dash distance clone trigger + squad disable + implacable all in one package lol.

Odd is so good about using the word "Frick" that I found it funny when the sectopod revealed the reaper he actually dropped an F-bomb. You know shit just got real then.
*chuckle* I took all 3 out yesterday on a mission. dragunova, mox and my templar. the templar and mox bonded. interesting pairing that one
yep i got cooked twice from these incindiary grenades.... was so shocked.but i think they are out of place from thier function.. u see them in cities see them in tunnels see them everywhere. but werent they made to hunt down lost in these abandon cities ? maybe even tunnels? and subways stations ?. i feel that they appear to often for my taste.
Especially since two of the new classes are focused on getting close to enemies (skirmishers and templars)

Wish I seen this game when they were released. Played dos version. Best game ever. Just now getting back into it. XCOM 2. Beaten easy. Now trying veteran ironman.
We see this so many times - one health point remaining on an enemy unit after a hit - I think one random combat result must +1 HP if the unit would otherwise be killed, the latest example at 15:00.
Gas Grenade is still an explosive, still deals good damage, then adds poison.
I would recommend AP rounds to Grenadiers. While they shred armour, they also ignore armour while they hit giving them even a little extra damage.
Its useful to have one geared up Spark at least as it doesnt get tired and is good to fill up squads when soldiers are scarce.

At 35: 30 porters return fire was with a comcealed crotch cannon so funny!
That 'little fuzz' you've been hearing is a spectre idle sound.
You need to make the W.A.R Suit done first before being able to get null lancer and blaster bombs. In terms of AP rounds any class is great with them, though I prefer Sniper or Skirmisher with AP rounds the most and I still stack Talon rounds on Rangers for that 95% crit chance.
Gas grenades, fire grenades and acid grenades are amazing to kill Rulers and don't forget they are guarding those Avatar facilities. The sabotage and cover ops have been reasons not to bother with them. But with just two soldiers you can kill a Ruler thanks to the nerf they got for WotC.

About SPARKs: they are kinda ok in WOTC with the buffs they got given, but I'd like to recommend a couple of mods which I feel really bring them up to the level of the rest of your squad members in WOTC: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1123345891 "Sparks with AWC abilities" by Zamster lets your SPARKS gain AP like normal soldiers and have access to the screen where you can spend it on abilities you didn't pick and bonus abilities. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1133948306 "DLC Breakthrough Support" by RealityMachina which makes breakthroughs apply to content from the earlier DLCS (So SPARKs get the cannon upgrade breakthroughs, and also so the Alien Ruler armours get the armour breakthroughs).
Noticed you're not using smoke grenades at all. I do, they're cool.
There is a guy who've beaten Xcom TFTD on superhuman/iron man difficulty. He always used smokes, a lot, like about 15 per mission. And it really made a difference, like "winning the mission" vs "being toasted right at the drop zone" difference. Since then, I'm enlightened :)
I believe Spark got buffs to its aim stat in the expansion, if I recall correctly. They also have access to weapon mods now, which has helped them out quite a bit. Lastly, they don't get tired, which has been pretty handy in my personal playthrough. I actually have two of them now, one built for defense and one for offense, and while they're not blowing my mind, they're fun to play with.
They also don't get negative traits and are immune to mind control/panic etc.
I have to say that the feeling of the Guns was quite better in Xcom 1. There was nothing more satisfying than the shot of the Plasma Sniper Rifle: The tension when it heats up, the cool back and forth animation and then the ever so awesome sound of the Shot himself… and when it hits the head of an enemy over a ridiculous distance. And of course, the weapon model itself, with it's cool holographic scope. Kind of miss that, the shots have a little bit less impact.
Anyway, love your work Christopher, keep it going! I joined you when you had about 25k subscriptions… kind of crazy to see how far you got! Always wanted to submit my own soldier… never did. 😐
They have actually improved on the Sparks with WOTC. Their aim has gotten much better, plus they don't have will so you don't have to worry about them getting tired. And if damaged you can still take them on missions. I would recommend giving Sparks another look at Chris.
When Porter was atacked by the sectopod, it triggered both threat assesment and return fire. If you look at the video at 35:28, you'll see that he misses an atack and deals damage with the other (despite the game only showing the animation for one of them).
Umm Chris... the WAR suit is a much better version of the exo suit...
Porter did actually get both his return fire shot and the threat assessment shot - the first of them just missed.
What I do not understand is why you would do Spider/EXO suits over Wraith/WAR. Especially the latter when WAR suit would give you access to better weapons for it...
44 episodes in and we haven't even killed a single Chosen. Damn this expansion really extends the gameplay.
SPARKs in WotC have been buffed big time. I ended up building 2 of them. They are immune to Chosen effects and serve as high cover for soldiers. They have great synergy with human soldiers. In your new campaign, play the towers mission that gives you a free SPARK and you'll end up wanting to build another one.
The Tower mission doesn't exist any more. or At least it never showed up in my game. Neither did the Serpent den.
Seven elerium cores, wow. I need one of those supply raid missions ASAP. My Proving Ground has been idle for far too long.
The W.A.R. Suit unlocks the Experimental Powered Weapon project which can get you the Blaster Launcher you're looking for.

Holy hell, I really got angry, when the same shot missed after the crash ^^
The chosen missions are a normal mission followed by a second mission where enemies constantly spawn, and the chosen attacks. When you kill the chosen you get a chance to kill it's healing slab thing, before it full heals in a few turns and returns to battle. Basically set up near the slab and play defensive while shooting at the slab.
can kill the slab in one round even before ya take them down the first time if you try hard enough btw.(banish)

Wouldn't the Frost Bomb on Drake have come in handy on the Sectopod or was he too far out?
Aid Protocol > Teamwork > Move > Remote Start would've worked pretty well, actually!
Ah well -- we got to see the Purifier's grenade finally, so there's new knowledge.
Also, SPARKs have some rebalanced abilities for WotC I've heard, so they might be better than you think.

Kinda funny. ive heard you argue against klaus due to hunter being immune to melee. I know this is an old video. Have you figured out yet that any melee classified as "cannot miss" like the templar's rend and the assassin's katana supercedes "immune to melee"?

When are you gonna tackle the story missions? You have pretty much all the upgrades you can get at this point. Blacksite is a bit overdue? :P

So thinking this off the top of my head before even 2 minutes into the video, what roles does each of the new classes fill? We know what they can do(mostly), we understand many of their strengths and weaknesses, but we only get a six man team. This game has nine classes making it hard for many to get the strongest setup even if one can double back to get both skills from both promotion skill trees. 1st: class is the Mech from "Last Gift" that I hardly see be ever used so it must be bad. 2nd is the Reaper that covers Squad-site, Scout, and occasionally Sniper but you can rarely be a Sniper when your scouting. This makes me have a hard time seeing her uses in the final mission/other event that Odd will do pretty soon. 3rd class, the Skirmisher: is a spider suit Ranger with a grappling hook to help position/ get close to an enemy. CristopherOdd, if you see this message, I want you to reconsider on not getting the grapple skill that's opposite of "Justice" not for an attack, but as a defense. since Mox and his Ripjack gets stunned powers, you can pull Mox to stun an enemy that's jeopardizing another soldier's safety. EG: two Chrysalids(enemy example) surround a soldier, the soldier can only kill one Chrysalid, send Mox to stun one and have the soldier kill the other. This makes me think of Mox more of a half Combat Specialist(Minus the hacking), half Run&Gun Ranger. Finally the 4th class, the Templar that is a Melee Psy-op. Thinking this out by what the "New Classes" can do and how they function, to make a team of six plus the avatar on the final mission, I think the best team to make forgoes Ranger, Reaper, and Mech. this makes a team of Skirmisher, Sniper/Gunslinger, Specialist, Grenedier, Templar, and Psy-op (or any class you want if you don't have a good Psy-op, and double class Sniper Gunslinger.) This is me thinking of the Final mission where you're constantly against numerous opponents.

Chris, the Spectre is absolutely immune to overwatch.
No dude, if you take a look at the War of The Chosen Trailer: New Enemies, it was said by the devs that the Spectre is completely immune from overwatch shots due to their cloudy form ruclips.net/video/e4z7HT-UJiI/видео.html
I've killed quite a few to overwatch, only the first shot is a garuanteed miss.
