The real problem with the bracelet is that it's polished, which looks cheap and out-of-place against the satin-finish case. The hardware on that NATO strap, on the other hand, is a perfect match.

16mm is old-school lug width. I have a couple of old watches (Timex Camper, Oris Big Crown) with this lug size. But Merkur is right to make the watch a little bit bigger even though I have small wrists. Smaller watches actually make a small wrist look even smaller.

That's a Tongji (Chinese Standard Movement) - the basic movement manufactured all over China for the last 70 years. But this is decorated and blued, which is not very typical for modern ones. Most of the non-skeleton ones are ground out to make an nh36 look like it was handmade by the finest masters. But a lot of them are reliable! That said, this is way outside the $30 price range of most watches with a CSM.

I feel a patriotic duty to support marathon, but the prices are quite high for what you get. But recently they were giving that watch away for free with the purchase of a regular offering (I still didn't bite). I do have the resin Marathon navigator: same face, wonky asymmetrical case, but hits my tritium fix until I strike it rich with my bean farm....

12:25 if the lug width of the Marathon is 16 mm it should be sized up by another 14.4% (based on lug widths) which would mean the minute track is bigger on the Marathon than on the Merkur making it look much more similar in size imo

I think for the price, I'd go with the Marathon. As a Canadian, I've been eyeing the Marathon JSAR with the Maple Leaf on the dial, but $1500.00 CAD is steep. And that's on a rubber strap; with the bracelet you can add another $450.00 CAD.

    • @punkypink83
      @punkypink83 10 месяцев назад +5

i'd reconsider. so one guy i know got a marathon MSAR 36mm recently and he shelled out 200usd extra for the bracelet. marathon sent him the MSAR on the cheaper rubber strap. he contacted them and they sent him the bracelet and let him keep the rubber.
except they sent the wrong bracelet. he should have gotten the 18mm bracelet. they sent him one that said 20mm on the box, but measured 22mm! contacted them AGAIN and they made him send the bracelet back. took over 2 months before he finally got the bracelet he paid for.
except then it turns out it was the wrong one AGAIN! they sent the thicker endlinks for the auto, he bought the quartz which is thinner so the thicker auto endlinks popped his bezel right off and made it impossible to reinstall. 3 months on, he's giving up on the awful service and asking for an outright refund.

Almost broke three screwdrivers trying to get them apart before giving up. I did manage to force that overly thick perlon strap off the watch without removing the lug bars. I now have it on a nice olive green nato style strap. I really wish they had just put normal spring bars on it. And yeah, I actually like the size and look of the Merkur more than the Marathon.

I was in the market for a Hamilton Pilot Pioneer, which is a reproduction of military W10 watches from the 70s. It lists for almost 700 dollars. I found a Merkur version used for 68 bucks. They are 100 new. It is well made and runs plus about 5 second a day. It has a mineral crystal, but so does the Hamilton. In my opinion it is every bit as solid of a watch and for 600 bucks less is a better deal all around.

Interesting you wore this watch most of all during your trip...Thank you for an interesting comparison. And would be an expensive mistake sadly if I wasn't convinced once I had it in my hands.

Almost always AliExpress prices for the EU market are VAT inclusive, I don't know what country you're in, but at least for me in Lithuania, the price showing is 196,75€ *including* my 21% VAT.

Nevertheless the Austrian custom wanted 20% tax plus 10.- € fee - since I am not a lawyer I just paid to get it. (It was not this watch, maybe things have chanced since last time)

Damn it. That is quandary. I’m of the mind an original needs to be at least ten times more expensive than the homage. But I only like watches between 38 and 42. 🤔. So in this case, it’s neither for me. There are plenty of other watches that have a similar vibe. I’m just happy you didn’t put up another watch I immediately wanted to buy…

honestly for close to $600 that's just way too much for me to ever consider the Marathon, while the Merkur at probably below $150 in a sale is reasonable for a playful watch. And that is without the Marathon sizing issues

This is a fashion watch. Nothing wrong with that unless you are expecting to get a useful military timepiece for a bargain price.
A mechanical military watch *requires* hacking; otherwise they are not functional: "Sarge, does that bombardment happen 30 seconds from now... or now?"
Also, that Tongji movement: if it's been at least inspected and preferably cleaned (otherwise you might get a free eyelash included, as I did) it would be OK... if it hacked.
