    I paid for it, waited for it, waited AGAIN for it, but really like it. Not perfect, I think the clasp could lose some weight, and they need to be careful not to jack up the price, but a fun watch with or without the connection to one of the finest moustaches of the 1980s. Cheers, Jody

    It puts me in mind of another Canadian product, a Marathon, in both its no-nonsense appearance and the fact that it wears smaller than its size suggests. And I love the reference to Magnum P. I.; I was in the Navy stationed in Hawaii when the series was produced. For a time I lived on the North Shore and saw both the MD-500 and the Ferrari as they were filming. Cheers!

    Hi Jody! Incredible intro. Thank you so much for the review!
    We will definitely keep your comments in mind regarding the clasp, hour hand, and case back finish.
    Regarding the pricing, there was a 20% pre-order discount at the time of your purchase, but the retail price of the watch itself has not changed. We do plan to have a special pre-order offer again this next round, although the type of discount might look a bit different! 😉
    We are also trying to shorten the pre-order window on future batches. For those of you who are interested, please sign up for back-in-stock alerts and stay tuned for early September! Thank you once again for the review!

    As a huge Magnum fan myself, I would immediately buy a SeaQuartz 30-but only if it were branded as a Chronosport. Since Momentum are monitoring these comments, I would be very interested in knowing if they own the Chronosport name and if they intend to use it for a special edition. I would be the first to sign up. The original versions are not special, but the Magnum connection makes them ridiculously priced-even for ones in terrible shape.

      It's honestly not worth it at the higher price points if you're not a Magnum superfan. It's a no-brainer sale at $195, but at $260 it's out of the bounds of reason for what it is. If it goes up a 3rd time, it should be treated as the crime it would be.

    I got one for myself during the second round of pre-orders. Arrived in mid July and has been on my wrist since. I ordered it on the black tropical band as I wanted to remain faithful to the show.
    Fell in love with the watch when I watched the episode "Ghost Writer" from the original series. The watch was not in production at the time I saw the episode, so kept searching for a suitable facsimile. I recall eyeing a Timex Indiglo in a display case a few years ago which came close, as it had an orange minute hand, though it only offered a date display and was rated at 30m WR. Was glad when they offered this re-launch of the Magnum PI watch.
    I am also glad they remained faithful to the original design. The charm of buying this is the tie-in to the show, even though the watch is good value for money without it as well. However, without the tie in to the show, the watch might have retailed for a hundred less. I'm still glad they kept it reasonably priced and did not try to jack the prices north of 500 as most limited edition models might try to do.
    As for the movement, the specs online mention a 45 month battery life. A moan and niggle you may add is that the movement does not have an End of Life (EOL) indicator which would have been a useful upgrade.
    They have offered another watch in a similar design with solar powered movement (SQ30 Eclipse Solar) as well but it lacks the 12, 6, 9 numerals on the dial which make it slightly different from the Magnum watch. More military, more modern.
    Btw, love the way you photoshopped yourself into the intro.

    I bought one as well and got it in early July. I skipped out on the jubillee, but did get both the orange and black tropical. I am a HUGE Magnum fan, so this was right up my alley. The early ones from Momentum were listed at the higher price, but you could get a big discount for the pre-order. I still may go back and order the jubilee, just to have it. I normally wear the black strap, but the orange is a fun way to change it up. Looking forward to keeping this one for a long time.

    Apollo and Zeus! Have had a couple of Doberman's over the years thanks to that show. Truly an amazing breed.
    Signed up for the pre-order for the Sea Quartz and got my email to order back in June. I immediately deleted it and wanted nothing to do with this watch or the company. Momentum was basically using us to finance their wholesale order with zero risk and outlay on their behalf. They are a real company and have been around for years and years, they can finance the watches themselves with their money and put them up for sale when they get them. They don't need us to order/pre-pay as many as we collectively can and then order the production based on that with the money we already gave them.
    The watch business is quickly becoming to 'scammy' for me. Waiting lists, planned scarcity, price hikes just because, using 'influencers' for marketing/advertising, everyone jumping on the hype of the week watches, every company releasing the same same watch (ever since Seiko came out with the SSK seems every company is GMT'ing everything. Tissot PRX? Cool, everyone releases an integrated bracelet sports watch. Tiffany Blue? Coming right up!), and so on.

    Love it! I own a Momentum watch, but is the much larger 52mm M1 Deep 6 with a quartz movement. It is a bit heavy and big for daily wear, but if you want your watch to stand out or you need a really easy to read dial, look no further. For some strange reason, it looks O.K. on my smallish wrist. What I like about Momentum is that they are a true tool watch that was used by real divers. Mine has scratches on it bezel to prove it. This Magnum PI watch looks great and and encompases all the virtues of my M1 Deep 6 in a much more wearable package. Good work Momentum!

    Thanks for taking a proper look at this one. I've enjoyed your holiday photos with it on wrist. I initially canceled my pre-order back in February, but chickened out and canceled my order because I didn't really need it. However, it ended up living rent free in my head and when I saw they now had a jubilee style bracelet on pre-order for $250, I jumped on it. I've been looking for a good diver grab-n-go quartz for running out the door with the dogs each morning. We will see if this sticks around, as I do enjoy good lume before sunrise. I ended up ordering an orange tropic with it and with that and the bracelet, the total cost ends up being US$21.50 more than if I had kept my old pre-order and bought the bracelet when it eventually came out. Not too bad of a price jump in the end if caught on the June pre-order discount. I am slightly regretting not picking up the black tropic, but they have them readily available as an accessory for later order if I choose. The FKM strap for US$35 price really isn't terrible.
    The out of pre-order price is definitely a bit harder to stomach, but not awful. I do see they've sold out in all variants, so there's that. Note that if you're not stuck on the Magnum P.I. thing like I am, there is a "Black-ion plated matte" solar model for $288 on NATO or Tropic strap worth looking into. Those are still available for pre-order at the time of this comment.

  • @ejones5782

    My order was part of the Nov batch and I can report the following. First, lume is excellent contrary to this review. It easily lasts all night on both bezel and dial. Quality about on par with lower end Japanese diver - so certainly decent. Second hand hits marks about half the time but doesn't bother me. IMHO, the design of the watch is what really puts it ahead of the competition. It is unique , clean but yet not a copy of some other ultra expensive watch. The only items that I would describe as negatives are a small amount of bezel wobble that I understand is normal on some watches and the lugs don't take seiko fat lug springbars. Overall, I am certainly pleased.

Bond watches, the Captain Willard, Michael Caine's Rolex Day-Date (Get Carter), Ethan Hunt's G-Shock, Brad Pitt's Brietling Ambassador, Arnie's Seiko, Ripley's Seiko, the Alsta in Jaws, the Victorinox worn in 'Source Code', the watches the DEA guys wore in Narcos (an old Omega and an Orient apparently) ... Now if only you'd been able to drive that Ferrari, you'd have been an absolute legend! (I know it's the second set of Magnum title screens, but you might want to see if you can catch the original title screens because they're really fun.)

    I haven't purchased a new watch in almost 2 years but this one has really got my interest. Looks great on either of the Tropic straps. As for the hour hand...I like it as designed but would have been a real stunner if they would have framed it the orange. Think I have to go shopping now.

    I was originally on the second pre order run when they were under $200 but cancelled my order until there were some reviews out. I just got on yesterdays preorder and they are including a Magnum correct Hawaiian shirt for free with the pre order. That helps with the sting of the price increase.

    Just got a Sea Quartz 30 on the orange tropic strap..great watch!! Back in the early 80’s, my dad and I never missed an episode of Magnum P.I….I won’t be buying the Rolex model Tom Selleck wore starting in season 4, since the Rolex would cost more than my car!!🤣🤣

  • @shcmoly
    @shcmoly Год назад +2

    In the show Magnum gets his dad's GMT after he dies in Korea, but the GMT had not yet been invented. I read years ago the producers gave Tom Selleck that Rolex when the show ended and he still wears it daily.

    • @jamese1596
      @jamese1596 Год назад +1

      Tom Selleck donated his GMT from the show (which he wore daily for many years) to a charity auction a few years back. And yes, not only was Magnum’s father killed well before the Rolex GMT Master was introduced in 1954, but the 1675 reference he wore wasn’t introduced until 1959-making it even more of an anachronism.

    Hi Jody! Loved the intro, great stash! My favorite outfit since the Gypsy. You give such detailed descriptions that perhaps a stat you could list when reviewing quartz watches is how many out of 60 does the second hand line up correctly. This watch looked about 25-35 out of 60. Your latest Citizen is 60 out of 60 I'm sure. I remember your seiko solar street monstrosity was maybe 3-60

    Oddly enough I'm rarely interested in the majority of watches you review; however, I very much enjoy your entertaining reviews. Same with the Mad Watch Collector. I have bought a couple Pagani watches based upon your reviews that I was happy enough with right up until they died. Thanks so much for the entertaining reviews!

    Everything I own is quartz, and I'd like an automatic so badly, but this is so nicely done in my opinion, and the price is relatively low.
    Arggg... my longines keep getting delayed and i don't want to fall into the pitfall of buying so many budget watches that I never get the grail 😅

    Great intro, but magnum pi wore an msw automatic, as the company will remind you if you care to look. Come on, a ferrari 308 and a quartz watch? Maybe tom selleck had one of these kmart specials.

    A nice watch - love the retro design of it and the orange minute hand is growing on me. Maybe slightly too high-polished if used for practical purposes, but I'm not a diver it doesn't bother me too much! I do think a brushed caseback would be a better option, if placed on a bedside cabinet. Shame the second hand doesn't hit the markers. I have a couple of watches like that - and whilst I try and forget it's always in the back of my mind 😂😂
