@@romansilverwolf6422 SAME. Elder Scrolls games are a million times better when you do! I always give my characters bg story-based nerfs and limits - for instance, they can only learn one base-level fire or healing spell because of an aversion to magic and hate high elves because their family were murdered by them etc - and it gives SO much more to the game and helps combat some of the op/broken mechanics. I once, for kicks, made a khajiit who was both allergic to and terrified of wolves and werewolves. Like- blindly throw a fireball and run the other way level terrified. It made sauntering through the woods (the closest I ever get to fast travel is using the horse carts if my destination is literally at the other side of the map, because immersion) way more interesting and complicated from the very first day. When you have to be constantly on the lookout for, then backtrack, hide and find an alternate route just because of the ubiquity of the first-available enemy, it adds so much more life, impact, immersion and personalization to the game.
Some of my inspiration was my time as a musician, I was also watching a lot of Cirque du Soleil, so thats in there too. And i won’t lie, there is some Ty Lee. Really my first thought was a bard raised in a monastery. Someone who rebelle against the rigid way of life, but thought going the other way could be more interesting.
Well, the art is drawn like Ty Lee. And is very much describes her character. What I don't understand is how Larry was so adamant about how "useless" Mii was. Even most murder-hobos have some sense of "right role for right scenario". This guy isn't just a murder-hobo, he's just an asshole, plain and simple
I can see his logic though. All mythologies have a form of great or evil serpent. Judo-Christianity had a serpent in the Garden of Eden, as well as the cockatrice (or rooster headed dragon), and the leviathan (fire-breathing water dragon). Then again, not all fantastical myths in all countries involve a draconian either. Some have demons, trickster shapeshifters, fairies, spirits...
@@LocalMaple I don't remember cockatrices when I read the Bible. I distinctly remember the levitation and the dragon in Revelation, but I don't recall a cockatrice.

Honestly you can change a player like Larry you just have to throw him out of a few games and he’ll eventually get the picture. If not a couple of ass beatings after the game will fix it.
I had a monk character in a homebrew setting that got so powerful he used ki to rupture the space time continuum just to save his wife. Monks are BAMFs
This is not an unreasonable thing to say. For a very long time the monk class was not viable. Under 5e it is viable, but not every subclass. The issue stubbornly persists. And its not a simple issue either as one subclass (long death) is much more powerful at low levels. Some subclasses (not just of monk) are situational. For example, a gloomstalker ranger is a wise choice...for the Underdark. It is a terrible choice for the desserts of calishem. Beastmaster, original rules...HORRIBLE. Under new rules, pretty good. Minmax is an ignorant term. The correct term is viable vs not viable. Wizard with a maxed out intelligence score...viable. Wizard with the bare minimum of 13 to enable the class. Not viable. I mean what I say. You are just wasting everyones time if you can't actually cast anything and have a reasonable chance of the saving throw working. This extends to play. A wizard, just as an example, who attacks a weakness is effective but the same wizard with the same spells who is too stupid to do this is ineffective. I once held a troll, for example (low wisdom score) nearly helpless with tashas laughter while my party demolished what it normally could not handle. If I did that on a NPC cleric...I am just wasting a spell slot. Playing my cleric, often the most devastating spell I can cast is the humble Bless. Why. High AC. You understand? The monk class, often lacks synergy. It's a weak fighter variant.
Gotta say, as much as I love characters who are "traditional", I love characters that go against type. Noble barbarians, for example. Tribal shaman bard. Stuff like that.
Mine's more of the 'Protect the Pack' sorta Barbarian. For him, the party is as good as family (and yes, cue the BARBARIAN of all people just running to drag someone out of a fight they're nowhere close to ready for and berating the idjit like a scared half to death father)

Killed me when he said half elf was a bad race for Monk. Half-Elves are good with literally any class, thanks to those 2 floating +1s. Even as a murderhobo, he's stupid lmao. Also, I'm really tired of the "Monks are useless" argument. Your Fighter or Barbarian isn't running across water or up walls doing somersaults, throwing back arrows, jumping off cliffs unscathed, rerolling death saving throws, becoming proficient in ever save, or making the dm's boss fear for their life as the Monk forces a save or die on them for the 10th time. Monks are fucking awesome in 5e. They are worth playing.
@@kinosaga21 I agree. Monks are in that funny place where they CAN be pretty simple to play and arguably are easier to play than Fighter in the lower levels. Lmao Half Elves are contenders for best race in the game because of their versatility, which *AHEM* let's them be good at literally any class. In addition, while Monks in previous editions are pretty inefficient (to say the least), 5e Monks are more streamlined and very cool. @@evangrescol7772 Half-elves are indeed good at anything you want! I'd also go so far as to argue that there are no bad race/class combinations anymore. Honestly "shut up, we'll call you when something needs to die" would satisfy a few murder hobos I've heard of. They just wanna kill shit anyway, why not?
You know, ultimately, Larry should've been told to leave the table and go elsewhere early on, with the explanation that while all he had were experience points and gold, which couldn't be spent in the real world, Mi, Tom, and Bri all had stories they could share and enjoy telling over and over again.

Ah, the difference between a "Role" player and a role-player. The "role" player is a player that sees or plays a role in a specific way. "A rogue is a thief", "A Monk punches things", or "A Paladin must be a Tank/face of the party". While a role-player considers their character's class/subclass, race, background, traits, and other players and their characters when playing a character in both role-play and combat.
When I was like 12, it was very common amongst my friends to play GTA and just enter some cheatcodes and go on a murdering spree instead of doing the story, where although not suited for a 12yo either, you at least get to contemplate moral choices on occasion. I very much get that kind of vibe from Larry. It's a shame he never learned what games have to offer and instead just stuck to using them to let off steam.
@@janschievink1586Tom did say that. I didn’t embellish in this story. I rearranged a few things for narration purposes (the gm ran the adventure round robin style so it would be on us for a little. Finding clever solutions is what dnd is about, it's what makes it so enjoyable. Even if you play an evil, murdery character there's plenty of room to roleplay and make it more than "I kill them just because"

To quote Alfred here, “some men don’t want anything master Wayne. Some men just want to watch the world burn.” I hate to say this, but I’ve seen it happen. Knew a guy once, used to be a friend. Used to be. I was his first dm. Tried to teach him to play with the group, work together build back story. That it’s a collaborative game and the point is for *everyone* at the table to have fun. His idea of fun was kill the party. Every session. For two years. Every session was the same: he’d roll in. New character, meet the party, and then spend the rest of the session trying to stab people in the back or sell them out to their enemies or set off as many traps as possible. Inevitably, the party would turn on him and kill him. Next session he’d make a new character and try again. It wasn’t just one group of people he’d do this with: I dm at an adventure league and there were at the height of it 50+ people there as adventurers. By the end of the first half of the year every person there had a character he had gotten killed and had one of his characters killed. He’d then go on to message people who killed him threats about what he would do to them next week. Eventually, he found some players who he could bully around, and every game he would kill their characters off, then convince them to play with him in another group and promise he wouldn’t do that again when they got upset. That was a lie and the cycle would start all over again. I tried everything I could think of to change: I tried talking to him, offering rewards if he worked with the party, tried killing his characters off, tried making his characters ineffective at killing party members, tried dropping him in level every time he attempted to slit someone’s throat. Everything. Nothing worked. Eventually, people just stopped wanting to play with him. His actions started to go from just at the table to harassing them online. He got banded from the shop adventure league was played at, and eventually got permanently banned after making some really crappy anti-trans joke to a trans player in the league group chat, then bizarrely went on a rant to a colleague of mine that is Jewish about how his grandfather was a Nazi and how they should be allowed to do what they want. What’s bizarre about that wasn’t that he was anti-trans or pro-Nazi: he said all of that just to piss them off. If you haven’t figured it out yet, this person was mentally unwell. His whole enjoyment he got out of everything was in upsetting others. I tried everything I could to get him to see all that was going to do was get him isolated and alone, and that none of it was ok. He didn’t want to hear any of it, and now last I heard he doesn’t play at all anymore, he mostly just sits alone.
@@jordanwhite8718 while I’ve had to remove a person from the table once ( story for another time. You dm for 20 years you get a few horror stories) this guy... well, I saw the mental disorder, and I tried to help him. And all of my dealing with him were colored with “this person has an illness and cannot help himself.” So when he’d start acting up I tend to try offering mercy and I tried reaching out to help him. I’m a firm believer people can change and no one is inherently bad, but after that last two years I can’t help but realize there are people who won’t listen. In this guy’s head it was everyone else’s problem, not his. And while some of my players have aren’t perfect souls (lord knows I’m not) the rest of them work things out and are reasonable. In an odd way, ever since he got banished the other players have become much more open to talking things out out of game with each other. However, after this I do take a more assertive and proactive approach. I firmly bring up that if your idea of fun is at someone else’s expense here you need to leave and come back when you change your mind. I run games from time to time that is cutthroat in the way this guy wanted but I establish early on whether that is going to be allowed or not, and only if they sign a contract. Breaking contract means I don’t need to put up with you any more and also ensures everyone agrees to play the way intended or find another dm.
Not neccesarily but he might have played before witha group that prefers treating D&D as tactical game, not that those groups don't roleplay sometimes they roleplay better than some roleplayign groups i played with, but the main thing they expect and are ready for is how to get through whatever challenges DM throw at them, that of course isnt always combat sometimes its traps and sometimes its riddles or schemes, think less typical adventurer shit more Darkest Dungeon but with actual interaction between characters and npcs, but its is always on basis of what your character can do and what it cant do, to varying degrees of stricktness. People from such groups especially if they only played a few games before, as in didnt get to the good parts form perspective of roleplaying and only the parts of crunch numbers and use brain and contents of your character sheet to work the problem, will ususally be completely useless or bored, or as in case of Larry, disruptive, confused and angry if not handled right, which places this catastrophe of roleplaying seesion in the blame bin of the DM, not entirely mind u as he coudl have asked before hand what will be expected during the game, but still.

Reminds me of a story where our party's warlock managed to defuse a boss encounter and the boss herself, almost entirely solo. The party consists of a wizard, a ranger (me, I used the revised version), a barbarian and the warlock, Uder. The rest of the group aside from Uder provided support, but didn't really do much that needs elaboration. Uder was a Pact of the Chain warlock following a Celestial patron (think "biblical angel purges the unholy" type deal). He pretended to be a priest of Pelor, for obvious reasons. A bit of background: the party had been doing an important mission for the crown prince (king went nutty some time ago, so the title isn't transferred), and had been occasionally harassed by agents of the princess. The princess really disliked the prince, due to a heavy disagreement on a lot of policies; by "really disliked", I mean "attemped to assassinate him on a yearly basis". The party, working for the prince, naturally got a similar "disliking" treatment. Anyway, having finished up the quest, and being just about to deliver the sword we were retrieving back to the prince, Uder scouted ahead with his familiar as he usually does and discovered the princess alongside two or three ogres. The princess didn't know Uder, due to him being a new-ish member and not as active as the others, so he went in alone to distract her while the rest of the party circled around and went into the town proper. He managed to hit it off decently well, and more or less befriended her. The party wizard did some divination magic, and we combined that with our current knowledge of the situation to come to the *wildly* incorrect conclusion that we shouldn't give the sword off to the prince immediately, cause he might be evil. So, we had Uder help to set up a meeting with the princess, and explain our situation. After a talk with the princess we agreed to stop trying to murder each other, and that the prince probably wasn't evil so we should give the sword to him and work from there. We turned it in and leveled up shortly after (can't remember if it was from mission completion itself or an encounter a bit afterwards). We got a new mission to go to a new place, and as we traveled Uder started taking advantage of his new Dream spell. First, he entered into the princess' dream, and comboed Dream with Disguise Self to pose as Pelor, and convince the princess to agree to a discussion. He then went into the prince's dream and did the same, posing as the princess. It's worth noting at this point that Uder had left his familiar behind to make negotiations doable, and to function as a phone to keep the prince updated on mission status. With that in mind, Uder managed to handle the negotiation flawlessly (the rest of the party linked in with a telepathy spell to provide advice), managing to set up the prince and princess as handling separate parts of the political situation. The princess would manage an important military position from the front line, being the combat-minded sort, while the prince handles economy and logistics, being better with politics and the like. We found out later from the GM that she was just supposed to be a boss fight, but like most of the boss fights we dealt with in that campaign we managed to succeed entirely from left field. Uder's player left at a later date for scheduling reasons, and the in-character justification given was that he needed to do some religious work to atone for impersonating his god.

I would never have been able to let it even get as far as it did. Larry was clearly mixing IC and OOC. He was clearly toxic to other players, insulting, disrespectful and far too much of a hostile person toward the others. Honestly, I am surprised at the DM for not nipping this Larry business in the bud. I could never imagine running a group where one player acted the way Larry did OOC. It was allowed to the point of the rest of the players getting hostile toward Larry at the end. While Larry deserves the lesson, it never should have been allowed to get that far in the first place, in my opinion. The DM should have informed Larry, as soon as he started insulting OP and throwing things and demeaning people that he can either stop or leave the group. Larry wasn't just talking smack about Mii, he was crossing over the 4th wall and insulting players.
In retrospect, it's clear the DM actually let things go on because he saw that OP was building an effective lesson about how unfun murderhobos really are.
Huh, I had an entertainer monk concept aswell. He would go around towns playing his lyre while balancing on his quarterstaff and etc. It was pretty fun.
I had a slightly similar experience only this guy or murderhobo did a menacing roleplay and even got tired of the good alignments choosing to negotiate and spread peace, eventually the guy left the Party created his own party and challenged the good alignment party he basically became the Villain he was Chaotic Evil I say was cause after the good alignment managed to win and nearly kill his character he could still not understand why the good guys won... but he still stuck around unlike Larry, this guy was more like curious how the good guys that should be weak still able to win even against his strongest army of chaotic evil alignments, but yeah the party gave him a second chance instead of killing him, he mostly observes, he does a bit of roleplay too, and joins in on the party's battles cause he don't want to be left behind, but even I knew he'd probably rise against us again due to his alignment, but sadly the group disbanded but not because of well moving and stuff like that, its because life was starting to get rough for us...

That's one of many things that makes Warlocks and Clerics different as well. Fun Fact: Monk and Warlock, followed by Rogue, are my favorite classes in D&D
I always am kinda turned away by players who focus solely on the effectiveness of a character. Not saying I hate anyone who does it, it's just annoying when people can complain about how your character isn't effective when your not going for effectiveness.
There's different ways for a character to actually BE effective. Mii is an example of that. She was basically able to infiltrate an enemy base and make off with everything that the group needed to utterly annihilate the antagonists through nothing but espionage.
I wish I could introduce Larry to my wizard. He's a diviner who usually avoids battle magic. Like, he has magic missile in his book, but he doesn't prepare it every day. My party liked him, but that has caused problems for the party in more than one session
D&D is a hobby, you can choose who to game with. You'll run into alot of nuts in the forest of gaming but you'll at least remember the people that gels well with you so you can invite them all at a later date to a private game.
Cool story that's part of the reason why I got into d&d to be someone better than I could ever hope to be in real life. A true hero that people could look up to even if it was just all in my head. Not a murdering hobo. While I can understand the thinking of kick in the door kill everything that moves and take the loot. I think we all want to be better than that. Nuff said. Thanks for sharing this story with us all I enjoyed it a lot.
Op here. Thanks for listening! And yeah i can understand that way of thinking too. Most people grow past it or leave the game when they realize theres. More to ttrpgs.
If I was the DM I would tell Larry to stop meta gaming or I'm just going to kill of your character and you can leave. I will not tolerate doing something simply because you saw another player pass a note, or killing an NPC simply because they 'might' have the money on them (I would allow that for chaotic evil, since chaotic evil).
all things dnd did amazing artwork for this. like, I didn't talk to them on how Mii looked, but somehow the knew she wore bells! i as blown away by that
I typically play a Bard and have been in groups like this before, where the front-liners accuse the support classes of doing nothing because they didn't get the final blow. After the campaign I challenged the Barbarian and Fighter of the group to a two on one fight, they obviously accepted. The two enemies started next to one another on one side of a gladiatorial arena, and I was 60ft away on the other side. Being a lvl 17 Bard with Jack of all Trades and the Alert Feat, it's an understatement to say my initiative was crazy. The first thing I did was cast Forcecage to trap both my opponents away from me (they don't get a save). Since they were locked away for an hour I was free to cast various spells like Dawn, and Shatter, while just generally mocking them as Bards do. Needless to say the fight went quickly after I dodged their thrown weapon attacks, and better yet I had the satisfaction of showing them how powerful support classes can become.
Bonus award to this DM for rewarding amazing roleplay with some great results. Religion, culture, antagonists that aren't heartless evil, actions felt useful from start to finish? Best kind of DM.

This.
Larrys that bad don't appear in a vacuum, that guy must have had some terribly toxic DM's and coplayers in his formative sessions. Yikes.
To quote Alfred here, “some men don’t want anything master Wayne. Some men just want to watch the world burn.”
I hate to say this, but I’ve seen it happen.
@@SOLIDDave001 Honestly this just reminds me of a Ron White quotes. You can’t fix stupid. How this guy never got a huge ass beating is beyond me.
Pretty sure that’s called Oppositional Defiant Disorder.
"You said saving my family was a waste of time" he also wanted to KILL THEM BEFORE THE QUEST STARTED.

@@SamA-cw3be you're welcome. It is really a nice story, heartwarming to see a non-violent approach besting a violent one.
I had a slightly similar experience only this guy or murderhobo did a menacing roleplay and even got tired of the good alignments choosing to negotiate and spread peace, eventually the guy left the Party created his own party and challenged the good alignment party he basically became the Villain he was Chaotic Evil I say was cause after the good alignment managed to win and nearly kill his character he could still not understand why the good guys won... but he still stuck around unlike Larry, this guy was more like curious how the good guys that should be weak still able to win even against his strongest army of chaotic evil alignments, but yeah the party gave him a second chance instead of killing him, he mostly observes, he does a bit of roleplay too, and joins in on the party's battles cause he don't want to be left behind, but even I knew he'd probably rise against us again due to his alignment, but sadly the group disbanded but not because of well moving and stuff like that, its because life was starting to get rough for us...
that character concept sounds AWESOME!!!!!! Everyone making a character to fit the mould is not bad, but making a character against the mould is one of the best things that one can make. Think before criticizing another player's character concept.

This sounds like the modern era version of what stories meant back then, including the morale at the end.
Truly magnificent

Larry's just ...ugh. I'd hate to game with him.
Nuff said.
