This is my favorite soundie & I thank you for sharing it because much of Anita O'Day's 1940's performances in Krupa's & Kenton's orchestras were not recorded on film. It's amazing at how good this soundie was done and how good they all look performing together. There are several interpretations of what a "boogie ride" is, some of which are quite naughty. Anita was poorly promoted in her career and a global audience is just now beginning to learn about this gorgeous, gifted woman.
thank you for posting this rare "soundie" of Anita, Roy Eldridge & Gene Krupa. It's a rare look at the dancing skills that began the career of this beautiful and gifted jazz legend. In her auto-biography, Anita tells she was paid a whopping seven bucks for her performance while Krupa nailed down enough to buy a house. IShame on you, Krupa, it wasn't fair to Anita or Roy! For the clueless, "soundies" came decades before MTV and VH1 and Anita O'Day was there first
I've recently watched 'The Life of a Jazz Singer' a movie about her life. Amazing woman, unique singer, elegant, hot and such a bright character ! 100% agree with raleighman3000 : where's my damn tiem machine !!??
This is what Jose Fritz said about what a Boogie Ride is: "A boogie is a simple guitar structure: the B and C are played by stretching the fourth finger from the A2 and A3 frets up to B and C on the same string. All true boogie patterns are played with a swing or shuffle rhythm. In the early part of the century the term boogie meant rent-party. Its an ancient American tradition of musicians passing the hat at house parties events to pay the rent.
Yes , key of D , 10th posn , so it is the A2 and A3 octave frets i.e. A14 and A15 frets. The tabs are shown in the Wikipedia entry on Boogie en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boogie
I was under the impression the title is a play on the phrase " Thanks for the buggy ride", which means giving someone the runaround. And with the revival of Boogie Woogie in the 40's, they were just capitalizing on the name.
We all know what they're really talking about. That whole thing with the cop is just a metaphor. Krupa took a lot of heat for putting Roy Eldridge in the same scene with Anita.
@fran9860 you don't know what you are talking about. was several years later she got hooked on heroin. but even then she was always a profesional in her performance. you couldn't tell she was high, if she was.
Cool Man Cool PERFECTION real original music. No cheap modern version allowed...make up your own crap and leave it to the ghost of the PROFESSIONALS!!!!
That isn't "someone", it's Gene Krupa. I guess the mix and audio quality is so bad the drums are simply lost in the mush. A shame. But hey, that's 100 year old tech for you.
@letoubib21 Not 'gay' but 'gate' as a gate swings. Rhymes with the next line 'it really was great'. 'Gate' also used as a line in a Fats Waller song. 'So listen to me gate, I'm telling you straight, don't you try your jive on me'. Gate later became gater as in see you later alligator. The term indicates being hip or a swinger on the music scene.
if I had a time machine maybe I could go back in time and save Anita from a lot of heartache and drug problems that came along later. probably not. I would have probably been in the marines and gotten killed at Iwo. she couldn't have been saved from her fate anyway. she had a good second husband ( according to her book ) and he couldn't do it. she was just destructive. kind of like Linsay lohann is now. some things and people cannot be changed. well at least she lived a long life.
Donnie Mrkacek that's Gene Krupa he's the best jazz drummer who ever lived he is probably most famous for Sing Sing Sing with Benny Goodman. He was so good that he had his own band (this band) which drummers never have. It must of just been lost in recording
fran9860 - Unless you were there personally it sounds like you have no idea what you are talking about and what you are saying is pure speculation on your part as well. Why do you want to denigrate the woman for no reason other to make yourself look important?

Just love Anita O'Day...the greatest jazz vocalist of 'em all!
Roy ELDRIDGE! Basie's greatest trumpeter...
I love Anita ODay, And with Roy Aldridge too. Amazing.
Anita, Gene and Roy "Little Jazz" Eldridge. All Right!
This was in my dad's 78's, "kick it" was on the flip side.

This brings such a smile to my face. :)
Keith was a great rock player (unorthodox but great nonethelss). Yes, Keith was on record saying he was a fan of Krupa's style.
I 💘 Swing

Anita's so playful and cute!
Cool Man Cool PERFECTION real original music. No cheap modern version allowed...make up your own crap and leave it to the ghost of the PROFESSIONALS!!!!
Drum Boogie Barbara Stanwyck
Thanks for sharing this!
Don`t you have "Stop! the red light is on" with Anita O Day??
Thanks!
Keith Moon played rock drums very well
His timing was suspect though. Over-rated. And should not be mentioned alongside the great Gene Krupa.
Was this before or after Gene and band appeared in "Ball of Fire"? The lineup and equipment looks like about the same time.
It was most likely after
Damn, I wanted to hear the second song.
It's "Let Me Off Uptown", posted elsewhere on RUclips from this session...
1:51 cute!
MAI PÌU!

who is the rhythm guitarist? he's really gettin into the tune.
I think it was Ray Biondi
Anita was a hottie , I’ve read Gene thought so too and was rebuffed by her
The boss wanted a boogie ride
Where can I get this. Is this on a DVD?
Freud would have loved 0:33
When was it filmed?
@ Spencer Smartt
So let me thank you gay, thank you for that boogie ride, it really was great... *;-)*

I see someone playing the drums but I don't hear any?

I like Krupa, but "best jazz drummer who ever lived"? I think both Buddy Rich and Max Roach might have something to say about that. hehe
Rich would have a point, Roach should be more modest.
I'd give it to Rich also.

So... the film implies that if a gal shows a leg and "dances' with the cop she escapes a fine? Hmm?
So What? It's a Skit!
Quite possibly escape a fine. Yes.
Terrible picture quality! And Gene Krupa is hardly heard in the recording!
