I remember one interview where she talked about being at Hollywood parties at 9 or 10 years old and people were giving her glasses of champagne. How she survived her childhood-and became a healthy, successful actress after that-is nothing short of a miracle.
where the fish lives my cousin was 12 doing the same i couldnt believe my family for letting her be so wild and reckless and shes never gotten her life together at all shes 20 years older than me. So proud of this lady^ cause a kid doesnt deserve that
Heh, champagne? I wish that was it. I heard they were giving her bumps of coke and stuff at that young age. This is why so many of them are screwed up, because they treat children like adults, and also take advantage of them.
You know, I agree with you 100%, but I wonder if in this case Howard might have been using a classic interviewer's tool, filling to allow the subject to compose herself/himself.
I love how she's maintained a certain kind of innocence despite all she's been through even in her movies over the years. Maybe its her voice but if I didn't know better I'd believe she's lived just a "normal" middle class life.
Her grandfather, John Barrymore, was a huge star in the 1930's. Her great uncle, Lionel Barrymore, was also a big star--"Grand Hotel", Camille", etc. There is so much history behind this woman. Unbelievable.
God I love her. Her childhood was insane. I can’t imagine being a 9 year old drinking cocktails, smoking weed at 10, doing coke at 11. Her life depended on getting away from her mother and getting into that boot camp. I’m so happy the judicial system actually worked for her, and did the correct just thing. I don’t think she would of survived to the 40 something she is today. I think she would of crashed and burned. And probably died of a overdose years ago. And we wouldn’t have her movies. God bless you Drew. And thank you Howard and Robin for posting this.
Wow what a crazy childhood. 13 dancing at Studio 54? Going on tour with David Crosby at 14? I don't know much about her but she is definitely interesting.
At 9 came the drinking, drugs soon after that. At just 15 she advised it is not enough just to say no to drugs (kids don't listen) you really have to see what is someone going on and what is the root of the problem ruclips.net/video/Kkd0XM6cUXE/видео.html
I adore Drew Barrymore. When she was striking out on her own I had such respect for her because she was basically starting her career over with nothing. She waited tables and took acting jobs that I'm sure people from her past would've suggested not too. The press wasn't all that kind yet she seemed to be authentic, grateful and centered . Great sense of humor and always speaks kindly of others. Watching this I got sense she didn't forget where she was and who helped her. She was amazing in Grey Gardens. You can watch the original and then her and Jessica Lange and see how talented she is. That clip was great.
Wow, a different Drew than I knew existed. -What a Champion - i.e. staying-put-in rehab (18 months) even though Drew's then only 13 - has to be SOME kind of record. Love the fact that Drew came OUT of that with so much gratitude. Twelve step programs/rehab change everything. -Really remarkable woman. .
In the early 90's I was working on a film with some people that were friends of hers. She frequently came up in conversation. At the time, I held a lot of doubts about her ability to function and/or make that transition to an adult acting career. I'm very pleased that things worked out, I mean aside from the marriage to Tom Greene, but I screwed up with marriage too, so...nevermind, forget I said anything.
Howard's the best interviewer that ever lived. .a GONG goes off in Howard's head each and every time? - MATERIAL/scrutiny surface. Never seen anyone so quick on the draw - plus he's such a magnet for material that other hosts wouldn't find revealing. Howard's risen above all of them - is maybe the greatest LISTENER we've ever had. Howard can LISTEN. .Howard has the EARS of a DOG. . .
We need to be TRAINED and to listen. Listening's one of the greatest skills on the planet. the greatest Listeners are now the Clinicians, i.e. the therapists of the world - but Howard's up there with the BEST of them. Howard will always HEAR something that you or I wouldn't. Won't. It'd get past us but not Howard. . .
Drew Barrymore you are so amazing and im so inspired by you. We have had similar home lives.and how amazing it is you got over your drug addiction my mother wasnt able to overcome hers. I really love who you are.
I'm the same age as Drew so remember it at the time. Vicariously living through her as she hung out with Brat Pack Crew who were a decade older than her and doing all the things we thought were cool. So glad she overcame it.
Drew you need to write a book, honestly. Your a true success story and not because you came from money or fame. Because you got your shit together by your own choice and are a bigger success then anyone in your family. Much respect
She's tough as nails yet still so sweet...the rare celebrity who made it out of childhood stardom without being wildly fucked up. Still...that moment on Letterman 😁😁😁
I admire her for being mature & having the common sense to do something about her substance use. She' continues having a successful career as an actress & as an entrepreneur.
I like Drew Barrymore. She has a great head on her shoulder. She had to emancipated because her mother was not her mother. Because they were the "Barrymores", they left Drew to her own vices. For an adult it's crazy, let alone a child who need guidance. Although she went through boot camp rehab, she learned, and is now a great person. A lot of child stars do not survive. And she is a real parent to her kids. I'm so glad for her.
I lived in Beverly Hills ... and was told by people that my personality is like drew berry ... and I locked myself in highschool from 14 to 18 with school cuz I had indian parents ..I needed it
I know people are sceptical about Crosby as a psuedo parent, but he is a godfather to many artists so he definitely had love to give. When Drew was on tour with CSN&Y all of the guys were already parents. Neil had special needs children, so I bet he was more patient than Drew perceived him to be.
Drew was a party animal at the age of 13 or maybe even YOUNGER!! Hanging out w adults in the club as a kid!! I think I read also that she was on drugs as a young kid. I'm SO happy she didn't get taken advantage of, sexually in those situations. I am SO happy that she is thriving and doing so well as an adult, rather than totally mad and washed up like other child actors. 💗🙌🏻 Go Drew!!
Drew being emancipated at 14 literally saved her life..from what I understand her mother would use her to get into these adult Hollywood parties as a young kid..she would be around drinking and drugs and who knows what else..if she wouldn't have been able to get emancipated she most likely would have been one of those tragic child stars who overdosed or killed themselves..so glad to see she's doing so well now,I ❤ her she's awesome 😁
I keep expecting her to continually say "I know right?!" Ha ha ha! Bless! ;-) And at 02:36, she does not answer "Yes, I did stay off drugs/drink" - Good for her! Enjoy what you enjoy! Ha ha!
Back in those days Crosby was leading a struggling addicts group. A very nice woman that I worked with would go regularly to try and overcome her drug problems. She said that he was VERY tough.
Right? Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young were awesome musicians but they werent parents or married so I'm confused on how she was given to them as a preteen/teenage girl...
Crosby was married (and still is) to a woman named Jan. Jan and David took in people after rehab as a sort of halfway house between the rehab centre and living on your own. She wasn't emancipated yet so she needed guardians in the mean time. They had rules and were modeling a healthy drug-free lifestyle for her. It's not quite as crazy as it sounds.
well E.T. was the first movie i ever went and saw & i can tell you i slept through some of it and watched some of it as i was only like 3 or 4 years old at the time to be fair.
i dunno but from my understanding her mom was her manager and i dunno if she still is but i think her mom acted more as a manger than a parent. & her dad well he had his own issues as well, if you recall all the barrymore's pretty much have had issues of some kind. all of them have been married more than once, you had John who was a drinker than you had his son who also was and than Drew who got it from the both of them, but unlike them Drew was able to 0vercome it. i think with her mom i think she said once that she treated her more like a friend than a parent but i could be wrong on that. which is why i think she wanted to get away from them at 14.
Please put the full interview on the Sirius streaming service archive. I can't find it anywhere there, even though you have other interviews going much further back.

Yeah and doing regularly drugs at 11 crazy uhu
Not only champagne, there were bowls of cocaine and joints left in the open. They didn’t even care seeing a kid do drugs.
I agree 1000%!!
Heh, champagne? I wish that was it. I heard they were giving her bumps of coke and stuff at that young age. This is why so many of them are screwed up, because they treat children like adults, and also take advantage of them.
Howard Stern, you need to let the guest speak! We're here for the guests in the first place!
You know, I agree with you 100%, but I wonder if in this case Howard might have been using a classic interviewer's tool, filling to allow the subject to compose herself/himself.
Crazy how she made it out and seems so normal now. Much respect to Crosby and whoever helped her get through that
I love how she's maintained a certain kind of innocence despite all she's been through even in her movies over the years. Maybe its her voice but if I didn't know better I'd believe she's lived just a "normal" middle class life.

Lionel in It's a Wonderful Life (everyone's favorite Christmas classic)..etc...she has some great ancestory with her acting family!!
She came out of the institution as THE most humble person ever.
Love drew; one of my favorite actresses!!!

I need a better button than the “like” button, this was hilarious 😂😂
She really is tho. She is one of the few Hollywood actresses I feel like I could go up and talk to like someone I met off the street

Good post. Hats off to Drew. It's what we have in the end that counts.
No Hollywood rehab 30 day Malibu beachside bullshit. I love her
When I was a kid (I'm probably about 5yrs younger than her) I thought that she was going to die.

Why was she left with David Crosby? What did I miss here? That seems like a recipe for disaster.

Robert Fusco he kept her sober
