"Mysterious" spiral appears in night sky over Hawaii

- A "mysterious whirlpool" was spotted by the Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii, on January 18. Some scientists speculated it could be related to a SpaceX satellite launch earlier in the day.

The night sky above Hawaii is jaw- dropping awesome. You can see the colors of the milky way, unlike any where else on earth; spectacular.

@@biterness2323 there’s still plenty of places in the US where you can see the sky like that. You just need to find a place that’s free from light pollution. Hawaii actually isn’t ideal as the whole chain is effected by light pollution. The deserts and mountains are generally the best. The Mojave or the Great Basin is where I’d go for astrophotography.

The second stage of a starlink launch from space x uses a spinning maneuver to give the stack of satellites enough momentum to separate from each other before the moment of release. It allows the individual satellites to spread out and apart from each other to create a constellation of satellites. To achieve the spinning rotation, opposing reaction control thrusters and fired to create the rotation. The exhaust from the RCS thrusters crystallizes and shines brightly as the sunlight reflects off of the plumes of crystallized exhaust. When the crystals are suspended you can sometimes see visible shockwaves pulsing through the plumes from subsequent firings or pulses from the thrusters. RCS thrusters are used for these changes in attitude of the spacecraft.

I saw something like this in the night sky in Columbia, South Carolina. It looked identical to what you see in this video. I saw it in 2009 before Starlink was even a thing

It’s crazy I lived in a city my whole life and when I finally stepped out and watched the night sky away from the city it was insane you see atleast 10 shooting stars a minute you can see the Milky Way go across the sky with all kinds of different colors

Nearly every spacecraft and satellite since the beginning of space flight has directional thrusters to orient themselves because wings, fins and propellers don't work where there's no air. This is nothing new from Spacex. The exhaust is only visible if backlit by the sun just below the horizon, so perfect location and timing is the only way to see it. The reason it seems that this is most prominent with Spacex is simply the crazy volume of launches in recent months creates a higher probability of being at the right place at the right time to see it.

Yeah well space x is based out of south TX the state I'm in...and unless it's something extra military odds are it won't be over Hawaii or the west coast and even then...most of space x is launched from tx or Florida at cape Canaveral...space x has already been part of the help to Launch military S.A.T.s and and other classified payloads...and it was done out of cape Canaveral...some of these possibly all or most were streamed live on space x and or nasa channels.

I saw this exact type of thing, maybe 10-15 years ago over Bowie, MD. It was a blue spiral that lasted for a minute or longer. I tried to look it up but found nothing. This looks like it was debri or a meteor or something entering earths atmosphere. When i saw mine there was no other glow or "shooting star" with it, only the spiral. Nice to finally know what it might have been all those years ago.

@@niri2506 -- YOU'RE RIGHT. I hadn't tried to read the numbers because they were mostly masked by the label text. That's also consistent with star background motion and satellite sky-crossing times. So the object must have been a LOT higher than low earth orbit. Triangulation with imagery from other islands where star background is recognizable ought to provide excellent range estimates. THANK YOU!

I love the thought of being somewhere where there's not a lot of city lights so you can see all of the movements in the sky but to tell you the truth when I went out to a rule place in seeing this I can't decipher what is natural and what is unnatural because when I'm in the city when I finally see something it is crazy and unexplainable

I grew up on a ranch in the middle of nowhere. A place where you could see the entire milky way on a clear night. In the city you can't see much beyond a couple of planets, and now in the country, the sky is polluted by satellites. I only hope that our civilization collapses, all our city lights die out, and all the satellites crash back to earth so that some distant future generation may look up to the sky in wonder and see the universe for what it is once more

I thought the moving objects were shooting stars, and then thought, wow, there's so many of them and you can never see that many shooting stars in one night, then i realized they were just airplanes.

If you go out into the ocean where there is no light pollution and the sky is clear you can see hundreds of shooting stars within a few hours. You'll be able to see the full contrast of the milky way with just your plain eyes. It's a spectacle to see

I've seen something like that before. When I was a kid and they did an experiment at the Kennedy Space Center back in the 1960s. Looked like a spiral galaxy.

Every SpaceX launch (among others) punches a hole in the ionosphere about 550-560 miles wide and this is what it looks like under the right conditions. There were 180 of these launches in 2022.

This is the same type of event. It's a rocket booster in the upper atmo tumbling and releasing fuel. Nothing otherworldly. Keep Occam's razor handy.

Finding a sky dark enough to see anything is hard. I would have guessed it was from a rocket launch.
Rockets match orbital velocity, this object is not matching the sat speeds we see zapping around it, so it's not traveling at orbital velocity, it's very strange.
Kind of sad how many satellites can be seen in this one video… Leave it to humans to pollute everything, anywhere! 🤦♂️

Definitely from the SpaceX launch, when the rocket (2nd or 1st stage) is adjusting its position and is in sunlight the pulse from the gas is seen as it refracts the sunlight. So many cool videos of it during early morning or late evening launches. This is the first time I’ve seen it create a spiral. Epic!

Correct me if I'm wrong but the launch was 12 hours prior to this . I'm not sure it would be visible that long. I watch launches from nasa from my home often and the rocket is only Visible for a few minutes at best.

I saw that same thing a few years ago when I was in Mexico. Turned out it was in fact a space x launch from orbit. So crazy looking though!

I think that's a cover up. Anything in orbit should have orbital speed. basically it would have to go the same speed as the satellites we see moving around it. If it's not matching those speeds, it's not capable of sustaining orbit. The point of a rocket is to sustain orbit.
And what about all the other 'action' in the nights sky? Sheesh, its like we live under a galactic airport

on the big island. Not much city lights and the street lighting is built so it doesn't reflect back into the sky for the benefit of all the observatories. You can see so much, it can floor you.

I saw something very similar on new years eve this last time around. Was out just having a cigarette and i saw a point of light moving emit a wave just like that. But when i saw the spiral forming it formed three little dimmer spirals that merged and then the light went into the merged spiral and disappeared and then the spiral just kind of dissipated and disappeared. It was around 1am in hagerstown md. The whole incident occurred in the sky to the southwest about 30 to 35 degrees above the horizon. It seemed far as all i could see was a point of light moving. But same thing. My mind immediately thought, did i just see a craft fold spacetime and open and travel through a wormhole? Thought maybe i was just tired and mind was overactive. But this is exactly the same kind of event. Only difference is i saw 3 spirals form from the emitted wave that converged and merged. They looked more ghostly before they merged and seemed to "solidify" and become more "real" when they merged. But it was a spiral whirlpool like this and it went in and vanished and then the spiral just dissipated. I thought i was losing my mind. This is definitely something. I'm really leaning towards mastery of spacetime manipulation. But that just sounds so sci fi and crazy. But i swear, i think that's what it is.

I've been searching for someone anyone that saw this a mth or so ago. It was like a light blue whirlpool. .in and out. Then disappeared. I was at the corner on the little dipper. . I KNEW I wasn't crazy!!! I wonder everyday what that was.
Your idea that the spiral you saw was some sort of wormhole is not crazy, but quite possible. For starters there is a patent and linked documents, about a reverse engineered, UAP, called the TR3B , up until last year the information and documents of its journeys were available to download, I have them stored on the computer.
It spoke of using wormhole technology that sounds unbelievable, but was stated that along with anti gravity, that way back in the 50's they had mastered anti gravity , but also knew how to ' summon ' a wormhole , we should remember NASA spoke up about ' manifolds' in space, that were like a fast flowing current that any spacecraft could ride , like surfing a wave, it allowed extreme speed with no I'll effects . The topic of wormholes linked to the TR3B had a whole section on wormholes with photos , that matched some ' blacked out ' when seen near the ISS, it was a perfect circle , inside the TR3B document on wormholes wete photos of what had been seen photographed and hidden , because the unrestricted photo showed the inside of the wormhole , it was like looking through a telescope at another area of space , the photo showed this circle ( wormhole ) with the image of stars and planets in it .
Evidently they can be brought to a craft like the TR3B , hence the one hidden by the ISS as it was litterly in earth orbit .
The blacked out images had been all over you tube only to be removed later .
It details how travel through a wormhole is done , and how it can go very wrong , travel through them has to be done carefully , by all accounts making contact with the structure of a wormhole can allegedly send a craft to a different time.
So any craft it stated would have to travel very slowly within the throat of the wormhole , the one they spoke of linked our solar system and allegedly the star Sirius , and also zeta reticulum. The again alleged home of the greys . It said that despite traveling at 30kph inside the wormhole , one through you would have covered a vast distance in a very short space of time .
They had a diagram that was like the science demo of how space is folded and you punch through it rather than linear travel .
Anyway included was when a wormhole approached , it was like a spiral ( I'm not suggesting this was what was seen over Hawaii).
But your story about the spirals you saw is so close to this detailed paper that it does beg the question, was this a human endeavour or an off world species who use the same method.
It's widely known that linear travel as we know it, will never be the real answer , with ' light speed ' drives, more useful for navigating the solar system . Or using the recently discovered ' manifolds ' which were described as akin to a fast flowing river , as to how these are located or if they too show up as a spiral has not been stated , simply as I say , a very fast method of travel , granted from the description it sounds more like linear travel , they said it could allow journeys to mars in only days , and the Jovian moons in a month or two and Neptune little longer than that . Reading about that it seemed that there are numerous, manifolds' that are known to NASA
They are obviously different to a wormhole which is more or less instant .
And while it sounds far fetched it is documented and I gather that as it was part of a patent , it's not legal to file false patents . So perhaps as I say ( which the document doesn't mention what an approaching wormhole , if they are even visible while moving , again assuming they move , then perhaps the spirals you saw were wormholes prior to.opening .
It did not mention how they attract them either .
I included the manifold story as that was a genuine thing NASA put out to the public as a potential vast improvement for travel at least within the solar system.
It also didn't say if they go beyond our solar system. One assumes they tested the manifolds' and secretly sent a probe to see how they work .
Ultimately we the public know a fraction of what is known in secret .
The fact that wormholes we're also recently admitted , by the pentagon as technology that was being used and pursued adds weight to this.
And their list included time travel .
Also in the TR3B description, it fairly tounge in cheek spoke of trips through a wormhole , that allowed crewed missions to visit Sirius, and have the crew returned the same day .
And it must have some truth when so many sightings of craft , show some kind of circular portal open up right before the craft seen then vanish .
Then there must be something to it.
As for why it's not been handed to mainstream science is political probably , not wanting an adversary to have a technology, that might allow them to jump ahead in what is obviously a twin track space program.
It's infuriating, though if true and as the documents describe , such an amazing method of travel , yet they allow billions to be spent on 1930's rocket technology is madness .
And these so called manifolds' in space , all it said was how quickly a vessel could traverse space , it didn't say how many they know of, or if they continue beyond the solar system, on a positive note NASA openly talking about them suggests they are real , and could be very useful . But , again are they afraid another nation would beat NASA into making use of them .
It did say on a final note that the speeds they allow would allow craft to be built to withstand radiation, and be big enough to have rotation for artificial gravity , for the health of a crewed vessel .
There are so many discoveries announced that quickly fade from the news , that NASA could possibly already have tried them out , but choose to keep it secret .
Sorry for the long post but the spirals got me thinking of what I've read from official stories .

The 1st light would appear right as the last one would disappear as if it were a whole fleet of something just traveling through a fold in space

I remember this happening somewhere in Europe some years ago and it turned out to be a Russian satellite that failed sometime after launch while trying to reach orbit, probably the same scenario for SpaceX here.
That’s a rocket fuel, coming out of the busted tank. If you look it up here, you’ll find many of those. There is a really nice one, that happened over Norway(?) I think, it was a Russian rocket that failed.

@Mike Kokoski Did you watch the video, Mike? That was a lot of intersecting traffic into the paths of one another. And most commercial planes fly generally at the same height. Planes don't fly these patterns no matter what height, have you ever been in a plane and looked out the window to see planes flying at a lower altitude beneath your plane? I highly doubt it.

Could be a satellite in low Earth orbit, got too low and/or fell into a spin. Retro thrusters which use compressed gas fired in the opposite direction to counteract the spin. In low Earth orbit the gas freezes into crystalized particles with the little amount of atmosphere up there leaving visible exhaust plumes that follow the exact shape of a central object spinning.

If it was a sat or rocket part, it'd be moving the same speed as the satellites we constantly see zapping around it, which is orbital velocity. It's not traveling at those speeds but much much slower. Also at that height it should be much smaller, this has the size of a small country. Sats can't hold that much gas.
Spirals, lasers, and then a fire with questionable origins that burned extremely hot. Blur roofs and cars intact. Children told to stay home from school same day, no alarm, no water. Rich buying up land like crazy. The same rich who seem to keep being named in other questionable events.

The speed at which this was sped up to indicates that these are satellites. Meteors would shoot across the sky at this speed almost instantly. You will also notice that when it starts to get more light, the number of objects also increase. You see a lot more satellites right after dusk and right before dawn.

Ive saw a hundreds of shooting stars, but never saw shooting stars coming from all directions at the same time, thats almost just as incredible. Usually they come from mostly one direction and the angle changes all night.

Yeah uh, I saw so many shooting stars that I can't help but think they weren't shooting stars. Too many at once in one spot in the sky. Those were something else reacting to this spiraling coming up

Seen this same spiraling object in my dream last night, adding that I had went through surgery the day of. Probably The Meds.

This was the second stage from a SpaceX rocket that did have a military mission that day. Location and time are spot on !
Impossible, anything in orbit should be moving at orbital velocity. You see the sats around it moving at that speed all the time, that object is almost stationary. If it was a rocket, it should be matching orbital speeds.
When you look at everything else… it looks like a interstellar highway. I’ve looked the stars on a ship in the middle of the pacific and didn’t see this kind of star activity. I have much sea time. My job was navigation. I watched the stars a lot.
looks like a rocket stage sep and ignition of the separated stage. The plumes of exhaust look very similar to other launches i just don’t know where it’d be from other than like Vandenberg or something.
I saw something like that with my dad and sister one nightin the Arizona desert. I thought it might have been either a wormhole or some kind of spacial vortex. My dad thought it could another galaxy.

I live in Oklahoma. If your in winchita KS, I’m about 2.5 hours from there in OK. I too saw this spiral last year in Jan winter time too. Exact date was Jan 31st 2022 around 6:50 pm. At this time it was dark outside already. My husband went out for a smoke and saw this. I’m glad I took pics and video of it. The video didn’t show so well but the pic . Wow it’s crazy when I zoomed in. I wonder if it passed us and flew over to KS?
If there wasn’t an earthly explanation for it, they wouldn’t be covering it!!

I Saw something very similar in December 2021 in EL TAMARINDO IN Conacaste , Costa Rica . For a minute I thought it was a meteor but suddenly it completely stopped and form a spiral with light coming out of it.

Sunlit fuel dump prior to upper stage reentry. Routine, the 'new normal'. Visibility depends on post-sunset or pre-sunrise so most such events do NOT make such a show.

You're seeing concentric rings created by the nitrogen cold-gas thrusters. I've seen this in videos hundreds of times since 2015.

@bethjim533 or you can look at the facts that at 7:24 am on that same day (2:24 am in Hawaii) falcon 9 launched a gps satellite from Cape Canaveral Florida. Seeing the constellations I the video would lead me to believe the camera was pointed east to southeast (the same direction as Florida). Once the satellite is jettisoned rockets will stabilize it and the secondary burner will burn up in the atmosphere (one of which is probably the spiral that was seen) You can also clearly see the burners from the rocket travelling across the sky before the payload is released.
I saw the same a couple years ago. Very strange sight to see. Went home and amateur astronomers were already having a conversation about it.

I think its a weather balloon.
My best guess is that since this was approx. 12 hours after the spacex launch, this phenomenon was likely the second stage of the rocket performing its de-orbit burn. Spacex produces their second stage to be completely burnt up in the atmosphere on reentry. If you watch closely before the spiral, you’ll see the object emit a singular pulse and that was probably to reduce speed and orient it towards earth, and the spiral is likely from two simultaneous outward facing burns in order to create spin, which would help ensure the object completely disintegrates while entering the atmosphere.
