Thank you Mike.. you have explained how to export/import the data from VS Roland 2480 to PC through VirDis. I still have that problem too but now after seeing this video it seems I don’t have any problem at all transfering the file from the 2480. You have explained it very well & simple that everyone can understand. I love it. 👍
Thanks for posting this video! I bought VirDis years ago, but can’t remember using it. I have two 2480’s & several older, but still very capable 64bit PC’s, and I’m going finally load VirDis & use it.
I'm learning the VS-2480 basics so far. I'm going to record, mix and master my next rap album on the 2480. This is good information. Are you still on VS Planet?
Nice, ...On another subject, Someone sent me a song on a CD, saved as Data and I tried to load it but, it tells me "Can not execute current drive is Archive Drive" What does that mean ??? Thank you
Nice tutorial, my question. is there anyway.. you can IMPORT a .wav file off your PC to the Roland VS2480 via the VirDis ? so like if some one sent you a File email. and you want that in your Roland so you can add it to your project.. ect.. only way I know is if you burn a disk and import through the dvd burner hooked up to the Roland.
I'm not sure. You would need to contact Bill Casey via the website in the description, or drop a post in the vs2480 forum at www.vsplanet.com The people on the planet know way more than I and are very helpful with vs2480 questions
I can't export my wave files through my CD drive anymore for some reason. It errors out mid-wave export and doesn't complete. Any advice would be appreciated. I have a VS 2400CD.
@@KillDevilTheory Yes I did. I flipped the machine over and removed the hard drive. I then connected it via an ide-to-usb adapter to my PC and extracted the wave files from each project onto the local hard drive. I used a free software package to extract it. It was called “roland wav extractor” or something similar to that. I eventually scrapped the whole roland unit and replaced it with a macbook pro which has given me MUCH more reliable performance.
I've read about VirDis before. I stil think dedicated and thus stable hardware platforms are the way to go so I have retained my VS 2480, gladly accepting it's format and audio resolution limitations. Now I am however for the first time getting into a situation where I want to exchange multitrack files with software DAW users. But all VirDIs links seem to be down and the website under reconstruction. Do you have any idea where I can still get it?

I have this beautiful machine but haven't been able to use it for years because the auto faders go crazy all the time. Here in the UK they tell me it cannot be serviced because it contains materials banned by the European Union! Has anyone here come across the wayward faders problem and if so do you know a remedy?
Chris Davies Hi Chris, seems like it's the fader board, but you can turn them off if they are sending around the twist... The setting of the MIDI PARAMETER screen’s CONTROL LOCAL Sw determines whether or not the 16 channel strip faders are active. You may want to disable the faders when you’re controlling the VS-2480 remotely or simply want to protect your level settings from being accidentally changed. You can set the parameter to: • Off-so that channel strip fader movements have no effect on the levels of the currently selected input, track, Aux master or FX return channels. • On-so that the faders set the levels of the currently selected input, track, Auxmaster or FX return channels. This is the default setting, since most often, you’ll be controlling the VS-2480’s levels locally, not via MIDI.
Chris Davies yes. Sometimes you can replace the faders and it should be ok otherwise it could be the motors which would need to be replaced. You can do it yourself (not recommended) or send it to Roland Headquarters in LA California.
Had to replace an HD and had the files recovered from the dead one. Is there a way to get those files back onto the 2480 from the recover USB. Tried burning them to a disk and the 2480 wouldn't read them correctly.
There is a PCI-e, SCSI emulation computer card that plugs into the SCSI port on the 2480 via an included SCSI cable. The card, cable, and the software is called VirDis and can be purchased through the website in the description or through eBay.
You have to install a hardware card to interface it with your vs-2480, so to answer your question no. www.virtualscsi.com/ will eventually be selling a version that interfaces via a network port and should be able to connect with a laptop..
Virdis is a fine system, if you have the legacy hardware for it. Today? THIS is how (and what enabled) I get wav files into protools:-1) click synchronize all tracks on the 2480; 2) transfer-- direct prepped audio out-- on 16 tracks to my Tascam model 24; 3) transfer remaining 8 tracks; 4) export these Tascam 24 tracks as wav files into protools. All this now makes the 2480 a really worthwhile tool for prepped mix(ed)ing tracks~!
chip co could you give a clearer explanation of exactly how you set the Roland up to transfer the audio - the cables and routing etc I need. Do you synchronise both units via midi? Or do you route the VS tracks to correspond with the the 8 outputs on the back of the VS. ie; track one , output one. Then just re-record them individually into the 8 channels on the Tascam. I have an old VS 1680 and would love to get me songs off of it and into my DP32. I very recently gave up on DAWs and have moved over to the Tascam, but I'm back to beginner level, after decades of not using such units, so I need clear baby step instructions, where possible. Thank you.
Nope. I use brute force. I put a 'click' at the beginning of track 1 of the 2480 (before the song begins), and then copy it on every 2480 track. This is identical to running a 'slate' on film, for timing. I then do direct 2480 output to (for you) DP-32 inputs for groups of 8 tracks. So I have 3 groups of 8 (audio recorded on the DP-32), where two of the three groups on the DP-32 are NOT synced. I then use the DP-32 edit functions to move each track within the two groups, to sync with the 'click ' of the first group. Now they are all synced. This is very easy with any TASCAM product, which have excellent editing functions. Takes 5 minutes after the audio transfer to have them all synced this way.
chip co Thank you so much. How do you add a click to the VS before the song? Is that a function of the VS? If you record it, how do you add it to every track before a song starts. On all the songs Ive recorded I have no space to add a click. They start at zero. Sorry for the questions but it has been so long since I used this unit and Ím literally starting from the beginning again - this week - on the Tascam
@@johnmorrell I often use a drum machine to do a --short click track, for example, on track 1. Then I give a few seconds and do a stick-count and begin song. Its really easy to 'bounce' that initial click track to any and all other tracks, even if you haven't recorded any song tracks yet.. Takes about 4 minutes to copy those few seconds to all 24 tracks , for example, from that one initial piece of click track on track 1. Now all your tracks on the 2480 begin precisely with the same 'click', before you start the song. The other way to accomplish the same thing is to use copy/edit functions rather than a 'bounce'. The editing functions on the 2480 are very similar to the DP-32, and even the TASCAM 2488 neo.

Marc see I don’t believe so, you would need to have a scsi connection on the machine. You can burn the raw wave files onto a cd and then transfer them to the computer for mixing
The VS2480 was a nearly closed system, and this killed the product. There is no USB transfer of wav files. You can use VIRDIS to transfer to an XP PC(for example) (not laptop; needs a 'card slot') and then make wav files OR you can dump wav files onto a CD with the 2480 CD and then import those CD files onto your laptop or other, with an external CD drive to the PC or laptop. Having the CD as the bottleneck was really shiortsighted by Roland. That is why this remarkable recording system now goes for a dime on the dollar :-(
