This is a DIY installation of self levelling floor compound over a concrete slab including lots of tips throughout the video. Music is Resolution by Wayne Jones.
It's just a thin layer mostly installed to smooth out the surface...the floor was already level. If you have dips and troughs in your floor it's better to watch videos of people pouring a larger quantity of levelling compound and using laser levels or wooden straights to level off the compound. I used Mapei Ultraplan 3240 self levelling compound. It was ok but it has very thick plastic fibres that poked out of the finished surface. I managed to do everything on my own...about 16sqm. Watch the video for the many tips I can offer you.

Those bags are heavy, you are one strong and motivated lady, what a great spirit! I'm feeling some very positive vibes from this video, thanks
Thank you so much! This was a few years ago now. I've since built a kitchen in this room having laid a porcelain tile floor.
This song is making me reevaluate my life choices. Why am I here? How did we get here? Where are we going?
ruclips.net/video/XC-XwDeX4W4/видео.html
it does!!!!
Makes me have to poop
And why did I never consider wearing flip flops for laying concrete??
I'm here because I have a floor to deal with and I am very nervous to think about it, But after this video watching a woman in her slipper doing the work I know where I am going. I am going to level my floor.
Seriously you made a lot of male folks (like me), to stop procrastinating about that garage floor. You’ve just got all my respects. Great job!
Wow, imagine how many garage floors are going to get fixed thanks to me! He he!
I came across your video while searching for resurfacing floors related tips. I’ve watched multiple videos on this topic in last week and after watching them all when I started watching yours, here’s what went through my mind. A video of breaking all myths about self leveling related process without uttering a single word but effectively using subtitles and showing how to do it. Thank you very much for your video and kudos to you. 👏🏻
Thanks for your fab comment! I've taken your feedback and added tips to my latest video - a plastering job. Just uploading! :)
Not one other video I watched shows a technique to self-level with the precision, perfection, and cleanliness, as yours. The others are either knee-deep in "mud" or walking with cleats all over the floor. I could not stop watching your work! Thank you.
Wow...thank you Lola! Feeling very good now! :-)
I wasnt going to spring for the spiked roller but yes...get the right tools to do the job....plus flip flops.. great work...
Thanks Joana. Good luck with your project.
My goodness, that is backbreaking work and you did it ALONE and in FLIP FLOPS!!!! You get the prize girl!! 👍🏼🥇🏆

Fair play, I can’t get my missus to do the ironing never-mind latex a floor. 👏
I hate ironing too! Honestly, it's the worst job. I'd much rather self-level a floor than iron shirts ;-)
Kudos to you! I had watched different videos but yours is the best, no words straight to the point by showing how to do it. Let me tell you I'm inspire and will for sure try your technique. By the way love the flip flops it gives you woman power!

Great job!
Thank you Robert :)
You are my inspiration! First video that i think i can do it!
Go for it!
Great job! So... now that this is well done and behind you, do you recommend using the gauge rake with a bon tool, a squeegee, or just like you had done it with a trowel and spiked roller?
When prepping the concrete beforehand, do you recommend "washing" the concrete? My floor is old and I just pulled up the carpet, about to scrape away all adhesives/imperfections, & was wondering if I should use a wire brush & some solution to give it a good rub down before priming it. Thoughts?
Hi Brandon. I am not an expert but my floor turned out completely smooth despite not having the right equipment. But if I was to do more of this work I would invest in some spiky shoes and something to spread it without needing to bend over. I don't know what they're called. After spreading it out, you could then walk on it with the spiky shoes and use the spiky roller to burst air bubbles and remove air pockets. I washed my floor, left it to dry and then applied floor primer. I would remove all lose material, then wash and then prime. I suppose if some adhesive is hard to remove and your compound is going to be deep enough, you might get away with pouring over it. I think the thing you need to avoid is pouring over lose material that might cause your compound and anything on top of it to lift. Good luck!
As single woman, without any helping hand you did very well, much appreciated. Inspiring me for DIY 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks for the compliment Viswa and good luch with your DIY projects :)
Incredible job! Good work
Thank you Peter 👍
@@HouseFairyDIY I’m about to use the exact same stuff for my garage but I’m afraid you made it look too easy! You have no join marks etc. Is it just because you kept momentum etc and spiked roller did it’s job? Did you use the exact mix as the bag advised? Garage is 6x4m so slightly bigger area
@@peterbennett4588 Sorry but I don't receive notification for replies. I didn't get any seams because I merged areas well. Pour subsequent loads near to previous loads but not on top of them. Then use a trowel to smudge them together and then the spiky roller. Good luck!
@@HouseFairyDIY no probs at all, thanks for replaying anyway.
Very inspiring!! I cant imagine myself bending over like that, my lower back will kill me 😅 thanks for this video! Hope I can get to do it in our room which also has a rough surface 🖐🏻
I have chronic lower back pain. I am often in agony doing DIY. I think exercise makes it better in the long run though, especially strengthening the stomach muscles. Good luck with your project.
Good job, I can't believe you are wearing flip flops. Haha
Thank you! My feet survived but spiky shoes would have made the job easier.
It's nice to see that when someone sets his/her mind to do something, it can be accomplished with hard work & determination. The only thing holding ANYONE back from being successful is a lack of initiative! Bravo to you, House Fairy!
Thanks Sanford. I have most of the rest of my house to do so I still have a lot to accomplish!
You are so inspiring! I’ve been tackling alot of diy projects alone and I didn’t think I could tackle concrete floors. But after seeing you I know I can!
Thanks Maria! It's really not that difficult at all, especially if your floor is quite level. Good luck!
But the idea is to level an un level floor.
No complaining just get it done and done right. The way a person is supposed to . Good job my lady. In fact better than most if not all men I know . You work like I do . Much respect.
I missed your comment...sorry! Thanks so much for the compliment.

Nice video, need to level a slightly uneven floor ready to lay a solid wood floor. Was your floor perfectly level with a spirit level when dry? As in you only have to encourage the self leveller around the room? I know it's a stupid question considering the name of the stuff but I've seen posts in guides saying you still need to actually level it
Yes, it was perfectly level when dry. I think you will find it easy as long as you turn your heating off. I did my floor in the baking heat so it started to dry while I was rollering it. How uneven is your floor? Do you have dips? Or is the floor sloping? If you have dips then you would be better off marking where the dips are and focusing your SLFC on those areas only, using a straight piece of wood to level it off. If you have a sloping floor then that's a more difficult job I imagine, depending on how big the room is. A sloping floor would need a straight to level it off and you'd need to set use some sort of height guides.
@@HouseFairyDIY thanks for the reply. its not overly uneven, within the margins on a spirit level but too much in places to lay wood floor and a couple of dips that need sorting. Ive seen a few guides suggest adding screws and level them all so you know where to go to, so ill probably give that a good go. Some say add more water to the mix, but i wouldnt want to do that and risk a base that cracks.
@@jamesatkins4830 How did you get on?
@@HouseFairyDIYit went really well thanks, was a smaller area than yours so easier to manage but I used the same brand as you. I have a lot more to do as I'm laying a new solid floor all downstairs, but divided it all into sections to make it easier. Currently renovating my lounge before a layer of self leveller and the solid wood floor on top. Fingers crossed it goes as well as the hallway I've already done 😄
@@jamesatkins4830 Glad it went well! Good luck with the rest.

Thanks Chris for the compliment!
Good job. You would put many a "beta" man to shame ;) Although watching a sharp trowel edge near your toes did have me wincing a tad.
I hope I do shame the beta men! ;) I still have all ten toes, so no need to worry. I'm three fingers down though. I really need to get better at the angle grinder work.
Thanks for that. Was a bit apprehensive about levelling a much smaller area but after seeing you complete that job will give it a go now, particularly as it looks to be another wet bank holiday Monday tomorrow. 😏
Glad it helped
A lot of work for something that's supposed to be "self-leveling". And that floor looked perfectly level to begin with.
It was more or less level overall but it had some unevenness to the surface and it was rough. I wanted to make it very smooth so that laying rectified tiles was easier. Any difference in height would have resulted in very ugly lippage. It wasn't a lot of work at all. The tiling was a lot of work. Luckily I got a very smooth floor with no lippage. ruclips.net/video/V16-poptVTU/видео.html
I really enjoy the ambient music, can you share the name? Cheers
Sorry but I can't find it in my files. If I find it I will let you know. I found it in RUclips's audio library.
@@HouseFairyDIY thank you
Sounds like Thomas Newman to me, not sure.
I found it. It's called Resolution and it's by Wayne Jones.
@@HouseFairyDIY you are awesome. Thank you
How many hours did you put in to this? Looks challenging.😥
I have to level the wetroom at my place and it looks daunting.
Sorry to have missed your message from six months ago. It didn't take long at all...an hour maybe. It wasn't a difficult job...very level floor, just a bit rough.
Hi house fairy, I am about to perform same task over old concrete. One side has sunken about an inch and the room is about 9 sq meters. When working alone how do you manage to make each batch before the floor dries? Does it matter if you pour the second half of the room the next day? Also, if you want to build the floor higher with another pour on top do you need to add anything else first or the stuff on top? Thanks. Love the video.
Hi Andreas. I'm not an expert but I managed to do it on my own. I mixed three lots one at a time. The mixing only takes about ten minutes so it's possible to complete a large area in a short amount of time. I would use more material than I used here. I spread mine out thinly but if your floor is sloping then you need more material to ensure it can actually level the floor and not just coat it as I did my floor. Make sure it's thin enough to flow too. I think that if you split it up over days then you might have to prime the dried surface before applying a new layer. I would just do it in one go, mixing new buckets of material quickly and getting it down quickly. Good luck!
Not sure you should of used flip flops 😂 but that aside great job awsome I'm currently clearing out my kitchen and I'm going to be tackling this myself before laying a membrain and tiling very daunting for me never done before complete novice DIYer but im sure i can do it well done 👍
So sorry I never replied to your message. RUclips doesn't inform me of them all. How did it go?
That's ok, i was using a pourable adhesive which is amazing because it's self leveling compound in one and no need to back butter the tiles I had 2 rows left and ran out of this stuff which I have to order as its hard to get hold of so I used different adhesive which I struggled with wish I had waited and ordered some couple tiles are not entirely flat, getting walls plastered tomorrow and then I'm gonna tile the walls 🤞
Not bad effort at all for a DIY job , try using a notched trowel and a bit more levelling compound and you would be spot on :)
A notched trowel? Is that to help get the same level? Yes, more compound would have been better and I had plenty. Next time! Thanks for your compliment :)
@@HouseFairyDIY
Yep helps get the same level and works really well :) give it a go , I think you’ll get on well with it :)
If you want some pics of levelling compound with a notched trowel I could send you and you could see the difference :)
Epic ✨🏆✨Beautiful production. Loved the dreamy quality to the background vibes🌴
Thanks Sean!
Did you prep the edges. I have watched other videos that seal around the room.
I still had the foam trim left by the builder who laid the concrete slab. I didn't seal at the boarded wall as there was no need. I created an edge at the doorway to my living room using a stick of wood and adhesive. I piled up adhesive around the floor socket. At my front door, I just carefully ran the compound into the gap between the floor and the doorstep to fill it up. It doesn't run as much as you would think. It's not graphene oxide 😀
good video, using your tip to level out my gazebo underfloor after noticing pools forming after a superstorm, great music by the way, very outer spacey
If you are going to use it to correct dips in a floor I would use a long metal straight to scrape over the dip. I didn't have any dips to correct so didn't use a straight. I should have included music info. I can't find it now. I did find it in RUclips's audio library. Thanks for the comment. Goo luck with your project.
Fantastic 👍👍👍
Thank you!
See me tile this floor using large format rectified porcelain tiles ruclips.net/video/V16-poptVTU/видео.html
Can u put this floor leveler on a wood subfloor then lay peel and stick tiles?
@@PATTILWood No, I wouldn't have thought so as the wood would expand and contract with the changing seasons and crack the leveler. I think you need to fit some kind of backer board first.
Would have been nice to see a bit more of the end result.
I have another video of this job that's longer and shows the finished result.
Damn! What an awesome job with minimal tools.
Thanks for the compliment. I did my best as a DIYer on a tight budget. I'm happy with the results.
You did this all on your own, WOW !
I'm very impressed well done !
Yes, I did and I've done a lot more since then. See my other videos. Thanks so much for the compliment!
What I wish I had known about floor leveling
compound after watching these videos;
The videos on RUclips are obviously with experienced
tradesmen, making the job look easy.
Primer is extremely important, especially when
laying layers upon concrete.
Anyone in the business of floor leveling will tell
you that the product isn’t self-leveling. It takes an experienced hand to have
a finished product that is flat, much less smooth and level, 3/16th
of an inch at ten feet is the max variance.
Cold, cold water will give you some extra time to
spread the mix before it clumps and hardens.
Special tools are needed, unless of course you are a
concrete man that knows how to use lumber as a tool.
Spike shoes are important when doing large areas.
A roller with spikes is necessary to remove bubbles,
help spread the cement and pop bubbles.
A slow stir is necessary to keep air bubbles out of
the mixture (recommending a mixer and not a drill).
Exact water measurement is extremely important.
Stirring longer than two minutes is just wasting set-up
time.
Sanding often isn’t a problem, some easier than
others, some dustier than others.
I agree with all your recommendations. I made a longer video that included tips ruclips.net/video/ibiKvO6FaEc/видео.html
is that epoxy
No, it's self levelling floor compound.
House Fairy
Great Video, we are floor layers ( Don't do much of what you did ) Hands up and great respect. What I would let the people know, is that you need, be using, a PRIMER for a Smothing compound NOT PVA ( Builders are normally just Monkeys and they think, it does everythink ! )
I was also waiting, for you to get screed, on the jeans ( let alone flip flops ) We get glue on us even if we don't use glue !!
Well done
Don
Thanks for the compliment Don! I did use a primer. Setcrete Primer :-)
Good work. But what do you mean by priming the floor?
Priming means brushing or mopping onto the floor a wash of watered-down primer. I used Setcrete. It helps the new layer (self-levelling floor compound) adhere to the concrete floor.
Everyone, use a dust mask so you don't inhale all that fine particulate matter. It builds up and is very bad on the lungs. Otherwise, good video.
You only need to use one when mixing. Once mixed, it's liquid and cannot be breathed in.
Love it! Great job🙌🏻 I do sometimes do work in flip flops 🤣🥳❤️
Thanks Victoria! Some people think it's terrible me wearing flip flops and some, like you, think it's ok. I think they're ideal for self-leveling floor compound. Maybe not brick laying! ;-)
Lovely job, I am 55 and used to do all my DIY, laying slabs, roofing, floor tiles, I built my own kitchen etc. Now my back is f*****. Look after yourself with a back support belt dear ❣️
I will look into back supports...thanks for the tip! I also have a very bad lower back but not from DIY but from too much sitting at a desk. I find lying on my back and lifting my knees up to my chest and also making circles with my knees helps. x
Rad! Dig the flip flops and very precise! I would have had my feet caked in self leveler 😄 Nice job and thanks for the vid!
Thanks! I've done a lot since then.
Hiya, just wanna say you've got mad trowel skills, a natural! All the love & luck from Wales 🏴
Lovely of you to say! Thank you. x
How long does it take to dry
It depends on the room temp. A couple of hours in the summer and overnight in the winter.
Best video of screeding and so much info... please can you tell me if you are using a lot of force when using the spiked roller cos after you trowel the screed wouldnt rolling make it uneven?? Starting mine next week and just wanted to make sure...
No, not a lot of force. Just rolling over it. The roller doesn't move it about...just pricks the material to ensure no air pockets. Good luck!
You are a hard working woman and your happy what you are doing I enjoy watching in full video.
Thank you! Yes, I do enjoy DIY...which is a good job as I have so much of it to do! Thanks for your comment.

@@HouseFairyDIY I failed!!!! Lol

I wore a mask when I was mixing the material but not while pouring it. It was an extremely hot day and also the material is not dangerous when it's in liquid form. Not airborne particles to breath in.
Don’t really understand what the floor was self level for because didn’t put enough on to level it out if u put a straight edge on it it will be really bumpy and up and down.unless it’s just for show or to paint 🤷♂️
Yes, it was more to smooth the surface as the floor was already level. In my other video, you can see me using a spirit level at the end and it shows it's perfectly level. Are flip flops mandatory footwear for this kind of work? :P
Yes, one-off SLFC jobs only need flip-flops. Only a fool would splash out on steel capped boots for one living room.
what if the floor has cracks and holes, should i fill them first or just let the leveler fill them?
I would fill them first because if you don't you might get air pockets in them. Good luck.

It's a long time ago now but everything worked out well.

Wow...thank you so much!
Is that the recommend foot wear?
No but they are men's flip-flops if that helps ;-)
In Indonesia thia land they construct beautiful ponds thing and that's Defo the right foot wear.
That stuff is not truly self leveling unless you mix it really really thin and also the whole lot Needs to be mixed together and then pored because it leaves lapping ,unevenly lapping and also the pigments will show each bag a little bit different shades and it’s just a unpleasant sight lol 😂 mix it wet I say lol 😂
I just wanted a smoother surface and it worked out well for my needs. If I wanted to do some serious leveling out then I would have either used a large piece of wood to move it about or mixed in a lot more water.
🤜🏼💪🏼that kind of my pal in DIY
Oh dear...I've just seen lots of comments I never replied to! Thanks so much for your comment...sorry my reply is so late.
Great to see a lady doing it, it's not easy.
It's not too hard. But it would be easy to make a mess of it I imagine!
This is a good job for a DIY but doesn't look like it's the first time you've used a float do you have previous experience?
I'd never done self leveling before. I've used a float briefly for a small amount of plastering. I pick things up by watching people work. I've been doing DIY since I was a little girl helping my father.
Looks good, but floor looked really level to start with. If a floor was full of ridges n bumps I assume you would need twice as many bags?
Yes, it was a level floor but it was rough and as I was laying large format rectified porcelain tiles I wanted it smooth to reduce the chance of lippage.
Excellent inspiring video 👌
