    Wow... dogs must have some sort of holy power, because they have managed the impossible! They have made Yahtzee, misanthrope supreme and cynic extraordinaire, turn into someone less intolerable and angry with the world, to the point he LIKED JRPGs!
    And that's why I guess we must thank The Surge for unleashing Yahtzee's inner, endless hate once more into the video games critics world and keeping the spice.

    • @WantWhatever
      @WantWhatever 7 лет назад

      +Al3xh413 To me it shows a lot of clarity if a developer team allows you to change a setting they thought was right. And to be fair, the camera locking is hardly a 'mess'. Nine times out of ten it works fine, it only has problems on that one specific boss fight.

    • @WantWhatever
      @WantWhatever 7 лет назад

      +Al3xh413 Just because nobody's fixed it yet doesn't mean nobody wants to fix it. When you can disable the setting that causes the problem, the devs probably consider it not as important as other game-breaking bugs which they are fixing right now.

    • @MalfunctionWhocares
      @MalfunctionWhocares 5 лет назад +12

      @@karmallarma5871 You're comparing a game having controls that are so broken that they require addons to fix it with a game that has fine controls except for one option you can turn on or off with the press of a button. And regardless, it's still usually common knowledge to check the options menu when you get a new game to see if you want things changed or not.
      It's understandable if you have to go through extensive shit to fix broken controls, but just going to the options menu to toggle a camera option that bothers you a bit isn't that big of a deal.

    Very confused by a lot of what he said since when I played it I didn't encounter any of these problems...I guess perhaps the floor glitch was patched by that point. But the enemies I found fairly obvious in what constituted as attacks, could see them just fine to fight in the dark areas, used proper spacing to get the windup on big weapons (you know, how big weapons are meant to be used) and looked into the various bits of lore you could find to learn why the machines went nuts as well as why the intro cutscene is the way it is. (Frankly that one seems fairly obvious. The system not administering morphine is the first identifier that things have just gone enormously wrong in the facility.)

Big Sister (the third boss Yahtzee mentions) is one of the easier bosses in the game; if I hadn't cocked up my healing attempt at one point I could have done it in one go as opposed to the two times it took me. Does the Playstation version not have the options to change how the auto-targeting system works that the PC version does?

    • @ChuckPalomo
      @ChuckPalomo 7 лет назад

      +Jeremy King They changed it to W/S? that's exactly what I was hoping they'd do, I have to go play it again. And Big Sister was a pretty amazing boss if you don't destroy its 4 blow torch arms. Also +Magnus Schleinkofer the mechanic itself is great and actually pretty fun to use, it's just the mapping that was terrible, not just because you had to use the mouse wheel, but because it overlapped with the body part targetting mechanic.

    • @Kingboy
      @Kingboy 7 лет назад

      Yup. The only (minor issue) with that is if you are a fan of high stability builds and blocking like me, you have to do a minor bit of retraining (doesn't take more than a few fights) to make sure you don't jump/duck when you want to be counter-attacking.

I don't blame him though, there's nothing more infuriating than doing everything right and you lose because the game breaks.

      gabegum Ds3 felt extremely lazy and rushed, and the only boss that took more than 2 tries was the Nameless King. It was a mindless hack n' slash game with barely any tactic or smarts of the previous games. Encumberance was way too lenient and the most effective PVE tactic was sticking to a longsword's r1.

    • @ArcaneVulper
      @ArcaneVulper 7 лет назад +3

      The only things wrong with dark souls 2 was how slow it was, how cartoony it looked, soul memory, and their definition of difficulty being "moar enemies!" but it was by far the most innovative of the series and had a lot of good qualities, its just that those qualities are often overshadowed by the terrible design choices. Honestly if the entire game was designed like the dlc areas were it would probably be top contender for best in the series. Instead we got ds3, a fan service mash up with cut corners and noob catering.

    After playing games that were smooth as silk with the attacks/dodges/parries (dead cells, as a mention) This game did feel awfully clunky, especially how you can't animation cancel attacks with your dodge or parry. If the parry even worked, half the time it doesn't, and when it does, it either works, or you take damage anyway.

    Well, the auto targeting problem can be solved very easily - it can be
    turned off in options (with customisable variations when it should be on
    and when off). The Surge has one of the best customisation options I
    have seen in games (I would like Souls game to get at least half of
    these options, really). This also makes me appreciate why TotalBiscuit
    spends so much time at options menu ;D
    Additionally, looking at Yathzee "Let's Play" of The Surge - the problem with not enjoining the game might also stem from not cutting enough body parts to craft full set of equipment. This is what game tells player to do from the start and not doing it (and not crafting entire set of armour at the start of the first arena, they are not decked out even after first boss) is like going though Dark Souls without putting on anything other than half armour slots or upgrading equipment. It's also very important to note that arms armour have big effect on stunlocking effectiveness, which solves that "I killed enemy, but he got a hit in" problem Yathzee has constantly in this game.

      Was this in the game at launch? I remember this argument showing up in his old Witcher 2 video when Yahtzee complained about unskippable cutscenes, and the fanboys tried to tell him that they were skippable, only to remember they were made skippable in a patch

    • @reallyrll

      SithisHimself Why would it make such a large difference if Yahtzee had finished the game as opposed to not? That's almost like saying unless you've 100% every game you've every played, then you didn't actually play said game.
      Besides, the things he's pointing out are flaws in the game's mechanics. Are the wonky camera and camera controls, glitches, problems with heavy melee, etc. going to magically change themselves to be more acceptable just past the point where Yahtzee gave up on playing? No? Then how does the fact that he didn't play through to the end de-legitimize his complaints about these aspects?
      In fact, off the top of my head, the only way I could see not playing through the entire game as being detrimental to a review is if he was reviewing the story itself. While Yahtzee did point out the cutscenes were a bit disconnected from the rest of the game, as he didn't play the whole game, that very likely could have changed later on. But the fact of the matter is that his main complaints with the game and the meat of this review were on points that would not have changed had he finished the game or not.

    Zero Punctuation band name of the week: Tropic of F***about, a neo-industrial indie punk band. Their debut album, Right Across The Tropic Of F***about On A Jetski Full Of Dicks, was pulled from shelves by Wal-Mart and Target after a letter-writing campaign by concerned parents, and proceeded to sell 6 million copies to people who don't like to be told what not to listen to. Tropic of F***about proceeded to each buy individual islands so that they never had to talk to each other again, and vanished into obscurity.

    I like the Surge. It’s a terribly misunderstood game. The combat is only clunky if you don’t understand how much potential you have. The game never explicitly states it but the main idea of the combat is to dash in and hit enemies and then dash around them to avoid their attack. It’s a weird balance between hyper-aggression and zen-like patience and it certainly requires players to be engaged enough to figure that out for themselves so I understand how people could hate a game that is pretentious enough to assume people will invest their time in it to that degree. Once I figured it out though I had a really fun time dashing through levels hacking robots to pieces effortlessly.

      It's an interesting way to put it; In Lords of the Fallen at the early least.
      I'd say they see other things in the Souls' genre worth exploring
      (target damage for extra rewards, openly playing with multiplier),
      but these things really don't please every Souls' fan. Adding some PSX's Vagrant Story
      and Sega Genesis' Cyborg Justice to the formula is a rare sight that can be polished.
      It would be great to see what they can come up with for their next game,
      it's an "Alter-Souls" take instead of just another bad executed rip-off,
      and this I believe it's better than ANOTHER FPS.

    This review is as absurdly lame as that old demon's souls review was.
    Warren not being put under for the surgery was a major plot point, actually. Once you realize what caused workers to go insane, you might start to figure out why certain other new workers, including Warren, were given surgery while still awake and able to feel pain.
    Machines haven't exactly gone hostile so much as been reprogrammed/integrated. Some have not been reprogrammed at all. PAX is just there to keep anyone from using the tram system. It can't differentiate warren from a violent worker zombie. It IS malfunctioning (some of its weapons are offline), but its programming seems intact.
    The plot has less in common with a souls game and more in common with SOMA or System Shock. The game can be quite difficult, but I would definitely argue the largest jump in difficult is the transition from abandoned production to central production b. Central production b is merciless for new players. You need to really take your time to figure out the mechanics before going forward, or you'll ragequit like yahtzsydephil did. Souls games had plenty of downright unfair bullshit in them, like Bed of Chaos, Crystal Caves and the dragon knights from DS2. I didn't find anything in The Surge to be more unfair than what I encounter in a typical souls game.
    The type of flashlight you have depends on your body armor because the light is mounted to the chassis. Yahtzee's complaint here about the flashlight not illuminating enough might seem rather funny to someone walking around in Scarab gear. All the lights are different for each gear set. Experiment yourself. Some offer focused, narrow beams and others are more diffuse.
    You can turn the auto-target off for attacking enemies. I didn't have this issue with the assembly line boss because my game was set to manual lock only. The fixed camera for the final stage is perfectly fine and I had no issues with it.
    And finally, the game has received numerous updates, patches and free dlc to add a ton of new weapons. Complaints about day 1 glitches hardly seem worth addressing.

    • @fettuccinealfredo4393
      @fettuccinealfredo4393 6 лет назад +5

      Ok sir, im just gonna come on in here and tell you why this thing you just spouted is quite silly, except for the surgery plot points and the auto-target, those points are actually sensible.
      However, the thing about the machines is just dumb. "They're not hostile, they've just been reprogrammed to be hostile. And some of them haven't been reprogrammed, they just can't tell the difference between a brain-dead worker hopped up on all the Tylenol in the world, and Warren, a man that doesn't fit that description at all but they attack him anyways because why would a person with all of their senses be trying to leave???"
      And saying that The Surge doesn't have much in common with Dark Souls and has more in common with SOMA and System Shock is like saying PUBG doesn't have much in common with Battle Royal the Movie and has more in common with Battlefield and Skydiving simulators. And the bit where you say that progressing further into the game means you have to know how to play the game better is just common sense. The bosses in DS2 may have been harder than i was when i beat them, but at least the game mechanics in DS2 gave me a chance to beat them, in The Purge: System Shock Edition, the bosses are straight up ridiculous, except for the second one, the only fun one. The first boss is about as difficult as a first boss should be, the second one is good, the third one has arms 9 different arms that you can only attack one at a time yet the arms can hit all at once if the so please, the fourth one is a regular dude with a really long health bar and you'll occasionally have to fight the first boss repeatedly, and that was where i stopped playing the game. Because that, in my opinion, is fucking retarded if you're idea for a boss is just another boss repeated until ad nauseam.
      The type of flashlight does in fact change depending on the body armor, but then again, who the fuck knows what kind of body armor he had on. He might not have had the armor with a good flashlight, so who the truck knows what he had access to.
      Finally the last part of your argument makes you and The Submerge look even worse. The Surge had glitches that made you have to restart boss fights seemingly at random, and since they patched it, you suddenly don't think the game should be bashed for having the glitch in the first place.
      I have The Splurge in my household right now somewhere and I absolutely refuse to touch it ever again, because seriously, fuck that 4th boss.

      Any machine that is part of Security is not reprogrammed. It has its programming from security which is to contain the situation and not allow workers to run around with weapons, which is what you are doing. The other robots have been integrated by ***something else*** because they were part of CREOnet when it went down. Workers were part of CREOnet too except for your character. If you haven't beaten the game, you probably don't understand how all the story fits together, but rest assured it does make perfect sense.
      The bosses are perfectly fine. Learn how to fight them. There aren't even that many tbh.
      My point about flashlights on armor is he could have tried different armors and found a better flashlight rather than bitch pointlessly in a review. I don't know what armor he has on, but neither does anyone else because he didn't say. That information would have been useful for new players. I hope nobody watched his review and then decided against getting the game. You can also use glowing weapons like the spectrebite and volatile spectre to give off light.
      The assembly line boss seems quite difficult at first. The first phase is very easy but frenetic. You stay at the back and dodge left and right, getting in hits when the arms are fully extended after attacking. The 2nd phase against the many arms is quite chaotic, but it's best to stay directly under one of the arms so that as few arms as possible can reach you. Just deal with each arm in its turn by staying near it, dodging and wailing on it. There's an element of the 4 Kings to this boss. As you kill arms, the arms that are further back will roll in to replace them. The final phase of the boss is very easy, although it seems hard at first. Again, stay near the boss and bait out attacks. Stay under or just to the side. Attack after you successfully dodge an attack. That's really all there is to it.
      I didn't play the game at release, so I don't know about glitches and such. Obviously glitches and bugs are not good. I can only state that the game now does not have glitches or bugs and the devs have released an absolute shit-ton of free content to update the game, as well as one campaign DLC that's very fun.
      You might think progressing further meaning knowing the game is just common sense, but Yahtzee has demonstrated in the past an unwillingness to learn games. His Demon's Souls review I referenced is a classic example of YahtzeeSydePhil showing up to a game, playing a tiny bit of it, getting pissed off and declaring it shitty.

      Alright now what you just said makes a whole lot of sense, except for the bosses, I still don't like some of them
      And i beat the Assembly Line on my 4th attempt with that exact same strategy as well
      If the game came out with glitches and bugs that fucked up bosses and the like as soon as the game came out, I believe that the game should still be judged regardless of whether or not they fixed it. Small glitches are fine, big glitches are a no no.
      If you watch his Dark Souls review you can see that our Lord and Savior Jesus Yahtzee Christ decided to progress through the game regardless of how much he was getting the shit kicked out of him and he ended up loving it. And in his DS2 review he even thought of playing Demon's Souls again. And I wouldn't say he played a tiny bit, I mean he did get to the 3rd boss for crying out loud.

      All I remember from the Yahtzee Demon Souls review about his progression was he got to Boletaria 1-2, went under the bridge, died to a bunch of enemies and ragequit. If he quit in 1-2, he only had to beat one of the bosses (phalanx). Even if he did get to a 3rd boss, demon's souls has bosses at the end of every level and there are 4 levels per marker iirc, so that's a tiny portion of the game. To base a review on such a small percentage of the game is unprofessional. I can honestly say even my DSP comparison is unfair to DSP, because he plays games further than that (usually) before ragequitting. I don't know if you're counting vanguard as a boss, but it's not required to beat.
      I know yahtzee has since praised the dark souls games. My point with this comparison is I think he made exactly the same mistake with the surge as he did with demon's souls. He went in, got all pissed off and ragequit. Again, I really hope people didn't watch his review and then decide not to play the game. I don't think The Surge is perfect, but it is a fun game and I'd put it up there with at least the lesser souls games. I enjoy it more than dark souls 3 for sure.

      As someone who played the Surge to completion, I wish I had stopped when Yahtzee had.
      It never got better.

    Yahtzee is right the surge sucks, the enemies sound design is just crap hearing them go YAAAAA and twitch around makes it nigh impossible to judge the enemies movements because they jerk around.

    This is a negative review, and yet he makes the game sound so good.
    +harder than dark souls
    +funny glitches
    -some camera issues at a specific boss
    +no other complaints
    sounds like an A- game right there

      Depends on the player really.
      Either way, my point is more that he didn't really mention many flaws at all. And considering how negative he usually is, I'd say this review does make the game look good.
