Wow... dogs must have some sort of holy power, because they have managed the impossible! They have made Yahtzee, misanthrope supreme and cynic extraordinaire, turn into someone less intolerable and angry with the world, to the point he LIKED JRPGs! And that's why I guess we must thank The Surge for unleashing Yahtzee's inner, endless hate once more into the video games critics world and keeping the spice.
Watch his "Let's Drown Out" series and he repeatedly says that he loves puppies, with Gabe saying a few times "if you ever want a positive reaction from Yahtzee, bring him a puppy".
For the best, keeping that much hate repressed can't be good for you. We had another year or two before Yahtzee started killing all those people he keeps in his basement.
Taking care of a small fluffy animal will tend to make someone relax. Unless they have no soul, in which case they just abuse the small, fluffy animal. I'm surprised Yahtzee even has a soul, but at least it's working for him.
Objectively speaking, though, wonky cameras in a boss fight where camera angles matter is poor design. Floor glitches may rub salt in the wound, but they don't make the first cut.
+Al3xh413 To me it shows a lot of clarity if a developer team allows you to change a setting they thought was right. And to be fair, the camera locking is hardly a 'mess'. Nine times out of ten it works fine, it only has problems on that one specific boss fight.
+Al3xh413 Just because nobody's fixed it yet doesn't mean nobody wants to fix it. When you can disable the setting that causes the problem, the devs probably consider it not as important as other game-breaking bugs which they are fixing right now.
I always appreciate when Yahtzee genuinely likes a game and how he's been a bit more lenient lately but fucking Christ I laughed so hard at the end of this video, it's been too long since he's been that bluntly angry.
Im glad you enjoyed it, by the end I am not sure...For me it had its great and terrible moments I suppose. "Alright" is quite accurate, specially since I despised Lords of the Fallen.
Interesting, the only boss I truly thought was complete garbage was...The Black Cerberus it was called? Like holy shit I mean From Software has recycled some bosses but why in the shit would you have a human sized boss that can one shot you if not careful and in between the battle add about 3-4 instances of the games first boss?! Fucking Deck 13 I swear.
I know this is an old video but I'm curious to know how he reacted when/if he discovered that you're expected to beat the game 4 times to reach max level
OMG, end of section reveal that the tutorial was a workplace safety video would be an AWESOME way to start a game with a major humor component, actually
1:56 makes me laugh every time. I think it's how he delivers those two lines "it's quite harrowing! and I'm not even sure what the point of it is" It has a traumatized intonation to it.
Was this in the game at launch? I remember this argument showing up in his old Witcher 2 video when Yahtzee complained about unskippable cutscenes, and the fanboys tried to tell him that they were skippable, only to remember they were made skippable in a patch
@@MalfunctionWhocares ...kinda? It's like the Dark Souls 3 PC port that needs a full control rework and an add-on to actually run the damn thing- sure you could argue "player needs to fix it", but that doesn't excuse the developer from making objectively shitty design choices.
@@karmallarma5871 You're comparing a game having controls that are so broken that they require addons to fix it with a game that has fine controls except for one option you can turn on or off with the press of a button. And regardless, it's still usually common knowledge to check the options menu when you get a new game to see if you want things changed or not. It's understandable if you have to go through extensive shit to fix broken controls, but just going to the options menu to toggle a camera option that bothers you a bit isn't that big of a deal.
Reminder that "You didn't finish the game, so your opinion doesn't count!" is not an argument. You don't need to 100% a game before you can determine whether or not it's hot garbage.
Vyn yahtzee isnt the dude with the last word, he isnt a review god, just because he didnt like it doesnt mean that the game is objectively a piece of shit
Deck 13 has a rocky entry into the genre with LotF, but The Surge was definitely a big step up. It can (or at least, should) only get better from here on out.
Abtin Because Dark Souls is just a third person hack and slash with a tiny healthbar and very slow attacks. But it's the most popular third person hack and slash at the moment so everything is compared to it. It's like how every open world first person game was "Skyrim but xyz" for a while.
Abtin because everyone wants to cash in on what is a great game. but they seem to fail to understand why it is a good game. so they make Peices of shit like this one. because these days all you need is to copy a game. fuck being original
This game was actually pretty fun. There was a lot of pointless mechanics that went completely unused but when I got used to the gameplay I ended up having fun.
He would have hated the fourth boss then. It's a boss that spawns an upgraded version of the first boss that you have to beat three times and the actual boss to win(unless you figured out the gimmick, which you wouldn't have because it's completely unintuitive)
You get it to fire at the 2 large white cylinders in the arena, that stops the PAX’s to stop spawning. That doesn’t kill PAX, or the Black Cerberus, you still need to damage them.
Very confused by a lot of what he said since when I played it I didn't encounter any of these problems...I guess perhaps the floor glitch was patched by that point. But the enemies I found fairly obvious in what constituted as attacks, could see them just fine to fight in the dark areas, used proper spacing to get the windup on big weapons (you know, how big weapons are meant to be used) and looked into the various bits of lore you could find to learn why the machines went nuts as well as why the intro cutscene is the way it is. (Frankly that one seems fairly obvious. The system not administering morphine is the first identifier that things have just gone enormously wrong in the facility.)
Surge is also fresh in the minds of 90's kids in its energy drink incarnation just as much as it is fondly remembered by players of the ill-fated card game Android Netrunner.
Every time I watch old ZP videos I feel reminded of how many incredibly mediocre games no one remembers and no one will likely ever talk about again there were in the early 10s even though they generated at least some buzz when they were new. I clicked on this video thinking this would be one of those and was shocked to see the 2017 upload date. I guess this kind of thing isn't just going to stop happening throughout gaming history.
What these Dark Souls wannabes don't understand is that it's not just the combat that makes these Miyazaki's games. It's a combination of map layout, intriguing art direction, and the oppressive, horror-like atmosphere.
All of which the Surge has in droves. Personally, I loved it and I'm working on 100%ing it for a laugh, but I can appreciate the criticisms it gets. It's a definite improvement over Lords of the Fallen though, so if Deck 13 keeps on that trajectory, there's a bright future ahead of them.
You didn't even mention how if you want the GOOD boss weapon, you have to kill it a certain way. Aka the harder way. Didnt know that until I already killed one and lost my chance to make my big fuckoff blade weapon into a big fuckoff blade with a tazer attached.
2 years late but I think it would be better if the game pointed you in the direction of it somewhat, like theres scrawlings on the walls telling you to "use its weapons against it" yet thats exactly what you're NOT supposed to do, like wtf lmao
Only for stationary ducking or jumping over attacks, which isn't nearly as useful as actually dodging, which is just spacebar + WASD. Also a recent patch changed that so you can perform duck and jump with block + W/S (depending on maneuver required). I'm beginning to think this is one that-thankfully-works far better as a PC game than a console one. Big Sister (the third boss Yahtzee mentions) is one of the easier bosses in the game; if I hadn't cocked up my healing attempt at one point I could have done it in one go as opposed to the two times it took me. Does the Playstation version not have the options to change how the auto-targeting system works that the PC version does?
+Jeremy King They changed it to W/S? that's exactly what I was hoping they'd do, I have to go play it again. And Big Sister was a pretty amazing boss if you don't destroy its 4 blow torch arms. Also +Magnus Schleinkofer the mechanic itself is great and actually pretty fun to use, it's just the mapping that was terrible, not just because you had to use the mouse wheel, but because it overlapped with the body part targetting mechanic.
Yup. The only (minor issue) with that is if you are a fan of high stability builds and blocking like me, you have to do a minor bit of retraining (doesn't take more than a few fights) to make sure you don't jump/duck when you want to be counter-attacking.
Just started playing the Surge and enjoy it so far. Killed the first boss and got to the second med bay, but when Yahtzee mentioned that glitch at the end it started to scare me if I'm going to hate it as much as he does. I don't blame him though, there's nothing more infuriating than doing everything right and you lose because the game breaks.
Blitzkrieg0811 Dark Souls 3 is the runt of the litter (a bad mix of all the games) and Ds2 is more like the weird cousin. Tbh the only good one is Ds1.
BreakingBeJammin DS2 was the weird cousin with the lame leg and brain damage. It was the worst of the 3, i really enjoyed ds3, it didn't rely on unnecessary difficulty to keep the game dark souls like 2 did. DS1 will always be the best but i couldnt even finish 2 it made me weep
gabegum Ds3 felt extremely lazy and rushed, and the only boss that took more than 2 tries was the Nameless King. It was a mindless hack n' slash game with barely any tactic or smarts of the previous games. Encumberance was way too lenient and the most effective PVE tactic was sticking to a longsword's r1.
The only things wrong with dark souls 2 was how slow it was, how cartoony it looked, soul memory, and their definition of difficulty being "moar enemies!" but it was by far the most innovative of the series and had a lot of good qualities, its just that those qualities are often overshadowed by the terrible design choices. Honestly if the entire game was designed like the dlc areas were it would probably be top contender for best in the series. Instead we got ds3, a fan service mash up with cut corners and noob catering.
I just watched the intro and first level of surge. Its legitimately exactly how yahtzee described it. You legitimately wake up and start fighting robots for no reason hahaha
After playing games that were smooth as silk with the attacks/dodges/parries (dead cells, as a mention) This game did feel awfully clunky, especially how you can't animation cancel attacks with your dodge or parry. If the parry even worked, half the time it doesn't, and when it does, it either works, or you take damage anyway.
Well, the auto targeting problem can be solved very easily - it can be turned off in options (with customisable variations when it should be on and when off). The Surge has one of the best customisation options I have seen in games (I would like Souls game to get at least half of these options, really). This also makes me appreciate why TotalBiscuit spends so much time at options menu ;D Additionally, looking at Yathzee "Let's Play" of The Surge - the problem with not enjoining the game might also stem from not cutting enough body parts to craft full set of equipment. This is what game tells player to do from the start and not doing it (and not crafting entire set of armour at the start of the first arena, they are not decked out even after first boss) is like going though Dark Souls without putting on anything other than half armour slots or upgrading equipment. It's also very important to note that arms armour have big effect on stunlocking effectiveness, which solves that "I killed enemy, but he got a hit in" problem Yathzee has constantly in this game.
>Well, the auto targeting problem can be solved very easily - it can be turned off in options (with customisable variations when it should be on and when off). Was this in the game at launch? Nioh is the closest you'll get to a souls game that isn't made by Fromsoft. (By all means prove me wrong, because nioh and ds3 just aren't scratching that itch for me anymore.)
What do you call a guy with no arms or legs at your door? Matt. What do you call a guy with no arms or legs in the bushes? Russel. What do you call a guy with no arms or legs in the ocean? Bob.
you don't have to finish a game to review it, as long as you're up front about how far you made it. see wolpaw's law: www.giantbomb.com/erik-wolpaw/3040-89532/ (fourth trivia bullet point)
SithisHimself Why would it make such a large difference if Yahtzee had finished the game as opposed to not? That's almost like saying unless you've 100% every game you've every played, then you didn't actually play said game. Besides, the things he's pointing out are flaws in the game's mechanics. Are the wonky camera and camera controls, glitches, problems with heavy melee, etc. going to magically change themselves to be more acceptable just past the point where Yahtzee gave up on playing? No? Then how does the fact that he didn't play through to the end de-legitimize his complaints about these aspects? In fact, off the top of my head, the only way I could see not playing through the entire game as being detrimental to a review is if he was reviewing the story itself. While Yahtzee did point out the cutscenes were a bit disconnected from the rest of the game, as he didn't play the whole game, that very likely could have changed later on. But the fact of the matter is that his main complaints with the game and the meat of this review were on points that would not have changed had he finished the game or not.
Big Cow Productions: Project Soul Link HOLY SHIT DONT HAVE TO BE A DICK ABOUT IT!! Just saying everybody seems to think it's a bad game when it's really not
0:47 My brain Surges with ideas on how the word Surge could be used relating to the body that isn't sexy. My heart Surges with blood from my fear of death. My legs Surge with energy as I run like a man wearing an expensive suit running from a tampanyaki restaurant... Actually that is pretty much it for me...
I love Ben Yahtzee and Zero Punctuation but I implore everyone to give The Surge a shot. Combat feels meaty and the Metroidvania level design is excellent, I enjoyed it a lot more than Dark Souls 3 and Nioh despite it being relatively short.
Zero Punctuation band name of the week: Tropic of F***about, a neo-industrial indie punk band. Their debut album, Right Across The Tropic Of F***about On A Jetski Full Of Dicks, was pulled from shelves by Wal-Mart and Target after a letter-writing campaign by concerned parents, and proceeded to sell 6 million copies to people who don't like to be told what not to listen to. Tropic of F***about proceeded to each buy individual islands so that they never had to talk to each other again, and vanished into obscurity.
I have got to start using the Tropic of Fuckabout as my new difficulty meter. "Well most of this game is two clicks below the tropic of fuckabout but this one fight jumped out at the edge and swam for it."
I like the Surge. It’s a terribly misunderstood game. The combat is only clunky if you don’t understand how much potential you have. The game never explicitly states it but the main idea of the combat is to dash in and hit enemies and then dash around them to avoid their attack. It’s a weird balance between hyper-aggression and zen-like patience and it certainly requires players to be engaged enough to figure that out for themselves so I understand how people could hate a game that is pretentious enough to assume people will invest their time in it to that degree. Once I figured it out though I had a really fun time dashing through levels hacking robots to pieces effortlessly.
Probably. The Surge is way worse on a gamepad I found. No reason to use it, Keyboard and Mouse work better in every way. Except maybe for the consumables.
For the 3rd boss it always moves in the exact same ways with the exact same timing. It's about learning the patterns. Just Incase anyone else is stuck :)
You could get the armour before the 3rd boss. By the time you reach the shortcut to the third boss, assuming you killed all the crane minibosses, you should have all five coins. Go to the vending machine that's worshipped by the guys in scarab gear and claim the armour. Just don't put it on until you get the kinetic shield drone.
I am really enjoying the surge. first 3rd person rpg I've enjoyed with mouse and keyboard. unplayable with controller. Story generic but typical scifi evil corporation willing to sacrifice billions for transhuman sentience. 8/10 Chungo Score
i expect more from Yahtzee than "Fuck you i fell through the floor, No!, Fuck this game forever" im not disappointed its just something i expect Yahtzee to be like... prepared for by now
Piff i fell thru the whole world in bloodborne 4 times and all of them happen 1 years after the game came out. But still kept going and beat the thu even tho the cheapness and awful framerate was making me want to vomit. Funny thing is the guy its a hypocrite when he played salt and sanctuary and glitched into the freaking wall in a way where the last boss couldn't hit him but Yahtzee could hit the boss he took it as a free win, i call what happened to him in the surge as karma.
The Breakfast Megapowers That was the straw that broke the camel's back, idiot. He didn't just find a glitch and go "SHIT GAME, 0/10!!!!", it was that plus all the other problems the game has that lead him to his conclusion.
Funny how the devs acutally know how to take criticism and came out with 2 patchs in the last month that fixed almost all the problems most people talk about.
I'm disappointed Yahtzee didn't mention Surge soda. I used to love that stuff. It was Coca Cola's answer to Mountain Dew, loaded with caffeine. And I'll always fondly remember putting my money in two separate Surge machines, pushing all the buttons, and having the machine disgorge all of its quarters through the return slot, to the tune of about 25 bucks each time. Then I went down the the local video arcade to celebrate my good fortune by chain-throwing other local youths into clinical depression with King in Tekken 3.
Well, I liked it. Has issues yes but is hardly as slow or stuttery as Fallen and has a vastly better setting, story, and aesthetic. Middle market devs should be encouraged to grow and improve, unless you think the alternatives to triple As can be floated by 90s devs failure factories and SJW-ridden indie hipsters who hate gaming. This company has potential.
Deck looks like it's a better company than From, so far. The 1.3 patch already fixes more things than the whole of the DS3 update history. They improve between games, have AMAs and don't seem to be the "DLC will fix this" type. Hell, they are conscious that you might want to go under the trunk.
Internet Hydra Better aesthetic, you mean the darkened corridors, warehouses, factory lines... They totally didn't get repetitive in my playthrough at all. Personally I would have preferred a more interesting setting that didn't look so bland and uninspired.
I agree with you. The overall design is great (though "shallow", in a FarCry 4+ sort of way). THey definitely deserve another chance. And I think I'll just buy this game to back them up.
I love the Surge. The sci-fi/horror atmosphere, the viceral combat, the limb dismemberment animations. Its just awesome. This is coming from someone who did finish the game and did have the skill to play it as intended.
50% of time the game is only hard thanks to you not knowing what going to happen as in ambushes, you could have never seen coming or mobs to more or less appear out of noway to.
It's an interesting way to put it; In Lords of the Fallen at the early least. I'd say they see other things in the Souls' genre worth exploring (target damage for extra rewards, openly playing with multiplier), but these things really don't please every Souls' fan. Adding some PSX's Vagrant Story and Sega Genesis' Cyborg Justice to the formula is a rare sight that can be polished. It would be great to see what they can come up with for their next game, it's an "Alter-Souls" take instead of just another bad executed rip-off, and this I believe it's better than ANOTHER FPS.
Remember how Yahtzee hated Dark Souls with a fiery passion? When The Surge 2 come out, he will love the ever-living shit out of it, and retrospectively love everything Deck13 ever made.
This review is as absurdly lame as that old demon's souls review was. Warren not being put under for the surgery was a major plot point, actually. Once you realize what caused workers to go insane, you might start to figure out why certain other new workers, including Warren, were given surgery while still awake and able to feel pain. Machines haven't exactly gone hostile so much as been reprogrammed/integrated. Some have not been reprogrammed at all. PAX is just there to keep anyone from using the tram system. It can't differentiate warren from a violent worker zombie. It IS malfunctioning (some of its weapons are offline), but its programming seems intact. The plot has less in common with a souls game and more in common with SOMA or System Shock. The game can be quite difficult, but I would definitely argue the largest jump in difficult is the transition from abandoned production to central production b. Central production b is merciless for new players. You need to really take your time to figure out the mechanics before going forward, or you'll ragequit like yahtzsydephil did. Souls games had plenty of downright unfair bullshit in them, like Bed of Chaos, Crystal Caves and the dragon knights from DS2. I didn't find anything in The Surge to be more unfair than what I encounter in a typical souls game. The type of flashlight you have depends on your body armor because the light is mounted to the chassis. Yahtzee's complaint here about the flashlight not illuminating enough might seem rather funny to someone walking around in Scarab gear. All the lights are different for each gear set. Experiment yourself. Some offer focused, narrow beams and others are more diffuse. You can turn the auto-target off for attacking enemies. I didn't have this issue with the assembly line boss because my game was set to manual lock only. The fixed camera for the final stage is perfectly fine and I had no issues with it. And finally, the game has received numerous updates, patches and free dlc to add a ton of new weapons. Complaints about day 1 glitches hardly seem worth addressing.
Ok sir, im just gonna come on in here and tell you why this thing you just spouted is quite silly, except for the surgery plot points and the auto-target, those points are actually sensible. However, the thing about the machines is just dumb. "They're not hostile, they've just been reprogrammed to be hostile. And some of them haven't been reprogrammed, they just can't tell the difference between a brain-dead worker hopped up on all the Tylenol in the world, and Warren, a man that doesn't fit that description at all but they attack him anyways because why would a person with all of their senses be trying to leave???" And saying that The Surge doesn't have much in common with Dark Souls and has more in common with SOMA and System Shock is like saying PUBG doesn't have much in common with Battle Royal the Movie and has more in common with Battlefield and Skydiving simulators. And the bit where you say that progressing further into the game means you have to know how to play the game better is just common sense. The bosses in DS2 may have been harder than i was when i beat them, but at least the game mechanics in DS2 gave me a chance to beat them, in The Purge: System Shock Edition, the bosses are straight up ridiculous, except for the second one, the only fun one. The first boss is about as difficult as a first boss should be, the second one is good, the third one has arms 9 different arms that you can only attack one at a time yet the arms can hit all at once if the so please, the fourth one is a regular dude with a really long health bar and you'll occasionally have to fight the first boss repeatedly, and that was where i stopped playing the game. Because that, in my opinion, is fucking retarded if you're idea for a boss is just another boss repeated until ad nauseam. The type of flashlight does in fact change depending on the body armor, but then again, who the fuck knows what kind of body armor he had on. He might not have had the armor with a good flashlight, so who the truck knows what he had access to. Finally the last part of your argument makes you and The Submerge look even worse. The Surge had glitches that made you have to restart boss fights seemingly at random, and since they patched it, you suddenly don't think the game should be bashed for having the glitch in the first place. I have The Splurge in my household right now somewhere and I absolutely refuse to touch it ever again, because seriously, fuck that 4th boss.
Any machine that is part of Security is not reprogrammed. It has its programming from security which is to contain the situation and not allow workers to run around with weapons, which is what you are doing. The other robots have been integrated by ***something else*** because they were part of CREOnet when it went down. Workers were part of CREOnet too except for your character. If you haven't beaten the game, you probably don't understand how all the story fits together, but rest assured it does make perfect sense. The bosses are perfectly fine. Learn how to fight them. There aren't even that many tbh. My point about flashlights on armor is he could have tried different armors and found a better flashlight rather than bitch pointlessly in a review. I don't know what armor he has on, but neither does anyone else because he didn't say. That information would have been useful for new players. I hope nobody watched his review and then decided against getting the game. You can also use glowing weapons like the spectrebite and volatile spectre to give off light. The assembly line boss seems quite difficult at first. The first phase is very easy but frenetic. You stay at the back and dodge left and right, getting in hits when the arms are fully extended after attacking. The 2nd phase against the many arms is quite chaotic, but it's best to stay directly under one of the arms so that as few arms as possible can reach you. Just deal with each arm in its turn by staying near it, dodging and wailing on it. There's an element of the 4 Kings to this boss. As you kill arms, the arms that are further back will roll in to replace them. The final phase of the boss is very easy, although it seems hard at first. Again, stay near the boss and bait out attacks. Stay under or just to the side. Attack after you successfully dodge an attack. That's really all there is to it. I didn't play the game at release, so I don't know about glitches and such. Obviously glitches and bugs are not good. I can only state that the game now does not have glitches or bugs and the devs have released an absolute shit-ton of free content to update the game, as well as one campaign DLC that's very fun. You might think progressing further meaning knowing the game is just common sense, but Yahtzee has demonstrated in the past an unwillingness to learn games. His Demon's Souls review I referenced is a classic example of YahtzeeSydePhil showing up to a game, playing a tiny bit of it, getting pissed off and declaring it shitty.
Alright now what you just said makes a whole lot of sense, except for the bosses, I still don't like some of them And i beat the Assembly Line on my 4th attempt with that exact same strategy as well If the game came out with glitches and bugs that fucked up bosses and the like as soon as the game came out, I believe that the game should still be judged regardless of whether or not they fixed it. Small glitches are fine, big glitches are a no no. If you watch his Dark Souls review you can see that our Lord and Savior Jesus Yahtzee Christ decided to progress through the game regardless of how much he was getting the shit kicked out of him and he ended up loving it. And in his DS2 review he even thought of playing Demon's Souls again. And I wouldn't say he played a tiny bit, I mean he did get to the 3rd boss for crying out loud.
All I remember from the Yahtzee Demon Souls review about his progression was he got to Boletaria 1-2, went under the bridge, died to a bunch of enemies and ragequit. If he quit in 1-2, he only had to beat one of the bosses (phalanx). Even if he did get to a 3rd boss, demon's souls has bosses at the end of every level and there are 4 levels per marker iirc, so that's a tiny portion of the game. To base a review on such a small percentage of the game is unprofessional. I can honestly say even my DSP comparison is unfair to DSP, because he plays games further than that (usually) before ragequitting. I don't know if you're counting vanguard as a boss, but it's not required to beat. I know yahtzee has since praised the dark souls games. My point with this comparison is I think he made exactly the same mistake with the surge as he did with demon's souls. He went in, got all pissed off and ragequit. Again, I really hope people didn't watch his review and then decide not to play the game. I don't think The Surge is perfect, but it is a fun game and I'd put it up there with at least the lesser souls games. I enjoy it more than dark souls 3 for sure.
Yahtzee is right the surge sucks, the enemies sound design is just crap hearing them go YAAAAA and twitch around makes it nigh impossible to judge the enemies movements because they jerk around.
This is a negative review, and yet he makes the game sound so good. +harder than dark souls +funny glitches -some camera issues at a specific boss +no other complaints sounds like an A- game right there
Depends on the player really. Either way, my point is more that he didn't really mention many flaws at all. And considering how negative he usually is, I'd say this review does make the game look good.

Ricky Yeung well, it did glitch on him. so I'm sure he was totally objective when he wrote this 15 seconds afterwards
Objectively speaking, though, wonky cameras in a boss fight where camera angles matter is poor design. Floor glitches may rub salt in the wound, but they don't make the first cut.
There is literally an option in the game to disable camera locking. If he didn't see that, I worry how long he spent looking at the game.
Thank you, I finished the game yesterday and I needed someone to be honest about that fuckery.
Then you have the patience of a god! -__-
Im glad you enjoyed it, by the end I am not sure...For me it had its great and terrible moments I suppose. "Alright" is quite accurate, specially since I despised Lords of the Fallen.
Definitely how I'd put it. The main combat is good fun, there are just a few glaring issues with other aspects of the game.
Bosses are fucking garbage in this game, but the game is for me a little over "alright", Really fun combat system.
Is there any actual reason to reach max level? I've never played it so idk

"SURGING KNEECAPS!" Sounds like the special attack in an anime.
OMG, end of section reveal that the tutorial was a workplace safety video would be an AWESOME way to start a game with a major humor component, actually
I love the genuine rage at the end.
One of my favorite games so far this year but these videos are always a laugh regardless of how much I agree.
"What's gotten into you camera, is this about the pissing on the bus seat comment??" LOL that part always gets me
1:56 makes me laugh every time. I think it's how he delivers those two lines "it's quite harrowing! and I'm not even sure what the point of it is" It has a traumatized intonation to it.
Boy if you knew you could disable the lock-on-hit in the options menu it would have saved you so much misery.
But why default to that control scheme... Why not let the player choose that option if they are playing with their feet
Having that on by default is the developer's fault
I got A Surge of happiness when I got this notification

Yahtzee, you forgot about the 90's soda Surge!
Deck 13 has a rocky entry into the genre with LotF, but The Surge was definitely a big step up. It can (or at least, should) only get better from here on out.
Why is every game nowadays "it's Dark Souls but it has X"
Abtin you mean "It's Dark Souls but it doesn't have X"
because this one was made to mimic dark souls
Abtin
Because Dark Souls is just a third person hack and slash with a tiny healthbar and very slow attacks. But it's the most popular third person hack and slash at the moment so everything is compared to it. It's like how every open world first person game was "Skyrim but xyz" for a while.
lol you couldn't be more wrong
Abtin because everyone wants to cash in on what is a great game. but they seem to fail to understand why it is a good game. so they make Peices of shit like this one. because these days all you need is to copy a game. fuck being original

I actually like the surge. I just really like the concept.

He would have hated the fourth boss then. It's a boss that spawns an upgraded version of the first boss that you have to beat three times and the actual boss to win(unless you figured out the gimmick, which you wouldn't have because it's completely unintuitive)
There is a reason the PAX spawns during the cerberus fight. You trick the PAX into destroying parts of the arena.
Lonewolf6565 to get Cerberus’s armor
You get it to fire at the 2 large white cylinders in the arena, that stops the PAX’s to stop spawning. That doesn’t kill PAX, or the Black Cerberus, you still need to damage them.
4:40 I also noticed that, which is why I, like any sensible person would, went to the options, disabled auto-lock on and beat the boss without it.
As I watch this an ad for the Surge 2 is the top if my recommended list.
Dark souls 4: electric boogaloo

The art direction is debatable but the Surge definitely has an interesting map layout and oppressive horror atmosphere
FrawLine I'd agree. the map layout is very reminiscent of the undead burg or the depths from ds1 is some places.
AND THE MYSTERIES
Don't forget the mysteries and the theorycrafting.

I think Lords of the Fallen did that too and frankly, I'm not a big fan of that approach.
2 years late but I think it would be better if the game pointed you in the direction of it somewhat, like theres scrawlings on the walls telling you to "use its weapons against it" yet thats exactly what you're NOT supposed to do, like wtf lmao
I lost it at the end of the video, almost choked on my dinner.
I wonder if Yahtzee mashes up its widdle face and calls it 'Chips'?
LOLed so hard on the funny bits, especially with the imps and the glitch part!
That dodging with the right stick reminds me of Castlevania: Lords of Shadows. Not so fun memories
On PC you have to use the mouse wheel. I mean, who thought that was a good idea?
Holy shit, that´s even worse than the idea to implement stealth in LoS 2xD
I just got an ad for The Surge 2.
I guess we'll be seing it in another top 5 games.

1:37 THAT'S A FRONT MISSION 3 ZENISLEV! Oh, seeing that gave my nerdy life new nerdy meaning!
2:59 Dark souls like... lmao
I mean, let's be honest... DS2 is the runt of the soulsborne litter
1:38 Zenislev! Gotta love that mech in FM3.
Well, the auto targeting problem can be solved very easily - it can be
turned off in options (with customisable variations when it should be on
and when off). The Surge has one of the best customisation options I
have seen in games (I would like Souls game to get at least half of
these options, really). This also makes me appreciate why TotalBiscuit
spends so much time at options menu ;D
Additionally, looking at Yathzee "Let's Play" of The Surge - the problem with not enjoining the game might also stem from not cutting enough body parts to craft full set of equipment.

In short: if you want a dark souls that isn't dark souls get nioh.
I would, if it was on PC.
Given that Sony owns the rights to it just like it does Demon Souls, that is very likely.
Nioh is fucking great
Nioh is the closest you'll get to a souls game that isn't made by Fromsoft. (By all means prove me wrong, because nioh and ds3 just aren't scratching that itch for me anymore.)
It bothers me that the amount of different enemies in Nioh is so low. They reuse enemies more then a sitcom catch phrase from the 80's.

you don't have to finish a game to review it, as long as you're up front about how far you made it. see wolpaw's law: www.giantbomb.com/erik-wolpaw/3040-89532/ (fourth trivia bullet point)
I understand his complaints but I'm on play through 3 and I haven't had any of these issues

"Dishwasher paaaaahts" dear christ mate might've wanted to cut that sentence up a bit
So you got gud eh? XD
He hate it because he didn't find the coconut! XD
funny thing is if you take the glitch part out of the review, he almost recommends it XD
Maybe it's a bad ps game and good pc game? I'm enjoying this one on a keyboard, dunno if I would enjoy it on a controller.
Probably. The Surge is way worse on a gamepad I found. No reason to use it, Keyboard and Mouse work better in every way. Except maybe for the consumables.
What. What kind of- what? It works perfectly fine ina controller. And the one who's saying it used a budget one with semi broken sticks.
"That's about enough of that!" *throws desk*

i expect more from Yahtzee than "Fuck you i fell through the floor, No!, Fuck this game forever"
im not disappointed its just something i expect Yahtzee to be like... prepared for by now
Piff i fell thru the whole world in bloodborne 4 times and all of them happen 1 years after the game came out.
The Breakfast Megapowers
That was the straw that broke the camel's back, idiot.
Your blood surges through your viens. There that was easy
Great to have you back Yahtzee
The surge is made by people that like Dark Souls, but fail to understand why it is good.
which is....?
Fucking hard but fair
50% of time the game is only hard thanks to you not knowing what going to happen as in ambushes, you could have never seen coming or mobs to more or less appear out of noway to.
It's an interesting way to put it; In Lords of the Fallen at the early least.
I'd say they see other things in the Souls' genre worth exploring
(target damage for extra rewards, openly playing with multiplier),
but these things really don't please every Souls' fan. Adding some PSX's Vagrant Story
and Sega Genesis' Cyborg Justice to the formula is a rare sight that can be polished.
It would be great to see what they can come up with for their next game,
it's an "Alter-Souls" take instead of just another bad executed rip-off,
and this I believe it's better than ANOTHER FPS.
Lol another fucker.
"For some turbo cocking reason"
That got me good.
The latest review of injustice 2 made by yathzee will piss lot of fanboys i'm 100% guarantee.
One of his funniest in a while, Missed ya you hateful sod :3
First, Well that's nice. Now all the 12 year olds who do this in every comment section can cry because I beaten them to it.
And some of them haven't been reprogrammed, they just can't tell the difference between a brain-dead worker hopped up on all the Tylenol in the world, and Warren, a man that doesn't fit that description at all but they attack him anyways because why would a person with all of their senses be trying to leave???"
And saying that The Surge doesn't have much in common with Dark Souls and has more in common with SOMA and System Shock is like saying PUBG doesn't have much in common with Battle Royal the Movie and has more in common with Battlefield and Skydiving simulators.
Alright now what you just said makes a whole lot of sense, except for the bosses, I still don't like some of them
And i beat the Assembly Line on my 4th attempt with that exact same strategy as well
If the game came out with glitches and bugs that fucked up bosses and the like as soon as the game came out, I believe that the game should still be judged regardless of whether or not they fixed it.
As someone who played the Surge to completion, I wish I had stopped when Yahtzee had.
It never got better.
"Jet Ski full of dicks" is now the most humorous and badass phrase I have heard XD.
Yahtzee is right the surge sucks, the enemies sound design is just crap hearing them go YAAAAA and twitch around makes it nigh impossible to judge the enemies movements because they jerk around.
0:55 Yahtzee turns into a ghoul
This is a negative review, and yet he makes the game sound so good.
+harder than dark souls
+funny glitches
-some camera issues at a specific boss
+no other complaints
sounds like an A- game right there
premier 666 hard doesn't always mean good.
Depends on the player really.
Either way, my point is more that he didn't really mention many flaws at all. And considering how negative he usually is, I'd say this review does make the game look good.
The ending to this was fucking magical.
