Good lesson, I agree, ais over radar but only if you have a gps/plotter to show you where you are. A disadvantage of the radar over the ais is the much greater usage of power!
I have both.. RADAR will help you in bad weather for the land and rocks, but navionics will help you has much! AIS, not all the boat emit, I dont, I should, but I dont :/ RADAR can give you a lot of false positive if not set correctly Both are great to give you the distance of the ship you see by eye at day! AIS is cheaper, easier to install, but if I can pick on or the other for free and installed, ill pick RADAR !!
