I see you’re at Paradise Village been there
More things can and will go wrong vs shaft drive.
One issue is that Bavaria. HR, Garcia etc all have the same Volvo engine crap in common.
Yep much communalities between the brands. That said My Volvo sit at 4300Hres without one single fail... It needs new gaskets at the moment.
You are putting lots of NM under your keel 👍
Still love video. I think you nailed it on so many levels. I just toured the HR factory and posted the video if interested!
Great information. I need to be able to remove the sprint entirely easily. Does it simply slide out of that forward ring attachment by pulling back? I have an anchor hatch across the entire bow fore-triangle, so to be able to open that when needed, I’ll need to remove the sprint and store it.
Yes you simply slide it out
I just followed this link. Are you back to Mexico already? North to Hawaii and back? is a lot of sailing in less than a year!
I am I need to put out new video and tell the stories. I am a bit tired of the whole trip. Still love sailing
Interesting matter but the audio quality was awful dome minutes in to the video stream. Could hardly hear what you were saying 😔
Sorry about the sound It is an issue I am trying to work on
nice video i want to install one on my hobbie cat 16, is there a smaller one from other brands you may researched ? thanls. jason from brazil
How are you doing, are you still in Marquesas? My trip begins in June from Sweden.
doing good need to put out a new video
It is not AC it is DC converting to DC 12v/24v
The unfortunate thing about this product is that its so incredibly expensive for what it is $6-8k... and very easy to make one out of a saltwater trolling motor head for well under $1000 with just a little bit of knowhow. Obviously it wouldnt be quite as energy efficient but make 2 and youre way ahead!
My first attempt was essentially a failure. The mission was well defined. But... The participants I had in mind did not want to do some aspect of the mission. Now I am solo sailor - others can join if they like from time to time but I do not depend on them. I think commiting to solo sailing is a key to success.
I would add this... If you want to sail in a region of the world, then go visit that area before you purchase a boat. Do you like the South Pacific? Do you like Florida? Go visit the place first. Old boats... They leak. The equipment needs upgraded. You need to be clever for an old boat. Great comments here in the video that I agree with. I personally am not obsessive about "going around the world". That seems to me an arbitrary goal. Why not just sail around at your home port until you get to 50,000 miles?
I think at 7:57 you glimpsed over what is the biggest difference between the two drives. To change these seals and rings with a you need to haul out a sail drive boat annually. If you are circumnavigating for 2 years you don't need to worry about where you'll be if you have a shaft drive. As well, if you have a sailboat with a centerboard you cannot rely on the keel to protect your drive.
Good lesson, I agree, ais over radar but only if you have a gps/plotter to show you where you are. A disadvantage of the radar over the ais is the much greater usage of power!
Oh man ! You’re right in my scope of life ! When you’ll be in Pto Vallarta and if my house is sold here in Ecuador , I might book a week on your boat just to see how I can handle it again . i’m 67 years old and haven’t sailed for the past 12-13 years but I’ve sailed for 25 + years so it’s like going on a bicycle, we don’t loose it …everytime I go fishing with my local friends here , it feels so f….good to be on the ocean ! Keep sailing , it’s always fun to get news from you. Bon vent !
That must be a small thin mainsail? how do you squeeze it into that thin mast?
It is a Elvstrom Offshore grade main. The thickest sail clothe I have seen on a 40 foot boat. That main has at least 30000nm offshore since I bought it in 2013. The sail and the in-mast furler function just perfectly well 10 years in. I do bring the sail to a loft every other season for minor maintenance items to keep it tear free.
@@SVParadigme20 So whats the dimensions of the mainsail? 4m x 15m? thanks for reply
I am not certain of the exact sail dimensions
juste wow
Great content. Strange the youtube algorithm hasn't showed your channel before. Had to search for selden rig
Thanks for your support! I love my Selden Rig . Let me know if you have other questions I’d be happy to produce another vid
Try a Solent rig if you can someday.👍🏼
Pourquoi Rangiroa ? Étape avant Bora Bora ? Merci
May be you have already tried this. But anyway: Lock the ball valve down on the saildrive from where the water is taken in. Take off the lid of the saltwater intake filter. If not full - fill it up. Let it sit for a while like that hoping for a burp. If it does not burp, try to start the engine and be ready with a bucket of seawater to feed it while the water hopefully is sucking through. Shut off the engine, fill the water system with seawater once more. Put then the lid back on, open the seacock/ ballvalve and start engine again. Maybe that will have gotten rid of the airboble that you experience. It probably build up when you were on land.
I guess I wrongly assumed that once it was ejecting water it was properly primed… I will apply your technique tomorrow. Let you know what happens
I did what you said. It has solved the problem. I have done that before. But I have had many occurrences where it was not needed. Anyway it makes sense to prime it…. Enjoying a perfect sailing day….
You seem to be in an awful hurry to move on. I enjoyed Daniels Bay for a week, lovely place.
I am meeting some friends in Rangiroa on the 19th of May… boats and schedules….
first like, first comment !!!
Thanks buddy
Bonne chance ! Too bad for the drone…😢
Ben weird
The bottom of your boat looks like new , the maintenance guy did a very good job !😊
Regular hard work
I know ! Been there done that and I’ll go back to it soon, looking foward to sell my house and get back to the sailing life !
Job well done 👍🏻 I’m looking forward to see your video of the seal change. Have a nice sail to the Toamutus ⛵️
Have you met Bumfuzzle there, their latest blog post shows them in Tahauta.

Very frustrating the disrespect from a minority, ruin it for the majority
Glad to hear that you made it without major problems to the Marquesas. Interesting to follow your journey and to see how your boat handles such a long crossing. I bought a Bavaria 38 myself and sailed it to Denmark last year from Portugal. Would it be possible to show some pictures of disassemblying the saildrive and changing the seals and O- rings as I’m about to do it myself in the near future. Not that I’m pleading you to turn SV Paradigme 2 into a DIY channel 😂
Of course I’ll make sure to show the saildrive job!! Thanks for following the channel!❤️🤙
I see that you’re anchored in the Marquesas , Félicitations , une belle traversée sans trop de problèmes. Bon repos!
And I would like to add... one of your dreams is about to come true. Arriving in the South Pacific 😊
Excellent analysis of the management and capabilities of your vessel. Well done.
"I've never done a crash with my Bavaria, unfortunately..." 🤣
😀😀😃
Great Vid chat. Ta for the speed test, even with the rocking that's better than Aus cities had 10yrs ago with dialup internet (old copper phone lines). Interesting 46 year back story, rude Q (which obv don't have to answer), but curious how u fund ur lifestyle, easy to be frugal, but still costs to maintain, etc. Re Rigging, have u considered using dyneema?
I like your way of thinking about sailing in a safely manner, too many captains don’t !
Watching.... --- QUESTION -- Not to pester you with questions, but do sailboats come with an Owner's Manual that details service items and schedules for servicing items the way that cars do? For instance, do they say "Check rudder core for water intrusion every Five years" or something to that effect? Or is this knowledge that one is expected to "pick up" through raw experience and self-learning?
I’ll answer that also
@@SVParadigme20 ..perfect!..
Was hoping for some speedtest results mid crossing (could u watch youtube?). Connected or Isolated is a mindset, I prefer the latter (so definitely avoid Facebook). I also value the safety, but we had satellite phone, EPIRB, etc for that. However now, if u have an issue with ur boat midway, u can research & arrange parts etc b4 u arrive, if u have a song in ur head, u can download it, feel like watching a move, maybe?
I hope you are heading to Hiva Oa first, don't make the mistake of going to Nuku Hiva. And slab-reefing on a regular main is easy for solo sailors like me too, at any point of sail. Love your Starlink, but I am happy with Iridium Go!, I don't want the regular internet access.
Pour l'instant BRAVO
Merci Gillos!!
Excellent congratulations
Thanks for your support!
Bravo ! So far so good !
Looking good out there! -- QUESTION -- Are you aware of any "crash" standards that sailboats must meet? Like cars do ie A vehicle's bumpers must withstand a collision at 5 MPH without suffering repairable damage, or it must sustain a collision of 25 mph without having any intrusion into the car's cabin. If sailboats had a crash standard that all hulls must meet, it would end this "production sailboat vs blue water sailboat" nonsense. For instance, all hulls should be able to survive hitting the corner of a submerged shipping contained at 5 knots without puncturing the hull. Or it must survive a keel strike at 5 knots without deforming the bolts. If there were proper standards for all new sailboats, then it would make purchasing them so much easier. As it stands, you really have no idea. I used to think that all the hulls were the same and it was the "fixtures" that were different. So you could buy a "lesser" sailboat and simply take the time and money and upgrade the rigging, or shackles, or plumbing etc., and end up with just as strong a sailboat. Boy was I wrong. Time for proper standards in this industry.
Man I love your questions, I am uploading today update I’ll come up with an answer…
@@SVParadigme20 ..perfect.. looking forward to it. Whatever the intentions were of those who made the current sailboat classifications system, it is now clear that due to circumstances and history, that impact survival is the number one consideration on people's mind. Everything else is secondary (and important but not paramount).
For near 2 weeks out there on ur own, u seem to be doing well Fatigue wise. Did u do any data speed tests mid way?
I’ll do a starling update today
Would much prefer if you did not just talk to the camera. Walk around your boat showing the sea, sails, stuff onboard. Anyway, which island are you aiming for? I sailed to Nuku Hiva, the only entry port last year, but now Hiva Oa is open, as I hope you know, and is far preferable.
Fair point. I’ll do a boat walk around at some point in time. Keep in mind I am single handing. I try to minimize the mouvements around the boat for all kinds of reasons. I am planning for Nuku Iva. But I will visit Iva Oa also
Wind generators produce power in the anchorage.
Yes they do! And they make noise. Solar is the way to go at anchor. Nothing worst then a great anchorage with all the annoying whizzing sound!
You also have electric saildrive systems ... and shaft drives ..electric motors can be mounted vertically ... Theres also pod drives rim drive and center and theres already retractable drives that can pull up into a sealed well in the hull leaving no drag. Electric motors are virtually maintenance free ... And you can regen under sail. So catamarans have more advantages. ...if you want a high latitudes composite go Basalt its also totally inert and lighter than E..glass. tougher and more abrasion resistant than anything else..its lower energy to produce and naturally widely available.
Great videos

...there is also this other brand of sailboat called "Amel" that Delos sailing is using. Any thoughts on that one vs the HR or Oyster?
This is worth another video I suppose. Quickly, I have sailed on a ketch only once. Newer Amel are sloop. It is a great brand and a great boat. I just remember the Ketch I sailed on being A LOT OF WORK to manage. Just for that a Ketch would be ruled out for me, I feel it would be to much work to single hand. Modern rigging can help alleviate that. In the end the fact that Amel has decided to go sloop speak volume for that design
