A Bronco Story: John Link-The Story Behind One of the Coolest Broncos on the Planet

  • Today, we introduce a new series that we will be doing whenever an opportunity presents itself. (Stay tuned for the next video where we will fill you in on how to present the opportunity yourself) There are so many Bronco stories out there. Some stories are funny, some are crazy, some are stories of death-defying feats accomplished by Bronco owners. John Link's story is one that not too many people could tell. We reached out to John and he was willing to tell his story in hopes that it would encourage others out there with their own rigs.
Eleven years ago, John Link and his son, Dustin, bought a 1972 Ford Bronco U14. Dustin was fifteen at the time, and it seemed like he worked on his Bronco with every spare second that he had. He worked with his dad continuously in the barn for about a year to build his dream Bronco. After having his license for a couple months after turning sixteen, Dustin passed away unexpectedly. With the loss hovering over, John could not bring himself to work on the rig anymore. It sat in the back yard with a tarp over it for a year. One day, four very close friends of Dustin came over, and after debating John to let them work on the Bronco, John finally consented and eventually began working on it himself. Working on the rig proved to be a good healing process for everybody.
John's daughter Sophie, eventually took interest in the Bronco and gave her own ideas of what she wanted to do with the Bronco. She added her own personality while keeping to the theme that Dustin would have wanted.
With the healing process having taken place, John's greatest wish now is to use the Bronco and its story to encourage and inspire others with ideas of what they can do to their rigs.
Thank you John and Sophie Link for sharing your Bronco story.

So sorry for your loss.. I also lost my teenage son right after he turned 17.. I bought him a new 250 dirtbike for an early Christmas gift, and he was killed on it a few weeks before Christmas. I was hours away when it happened, and to this day I don't remember most of the ride back.
It completely destroyed me! I wish every day that I had never bought him that dirtbike!
    May they both R.I.P.

I'm very sorry to hear about your son, and I know no matter what anyone says you'll always blame yourself. You can what if yourself to death. I too am an adrenaline junkie as your son was. I still ride dirt bikes and am a license pilot, advanced scuba diver, etc and always said to my parents if I should happen to pass while doing something that I love don't be sad I was living life. Boy I hate to hear the conversation that my mom would have had with dad though. I'm 60 now and never had the privilege of having a child as you so cherish the memories and you know your son is looking down and still saying thanks dad I loved the bike.

I understand his pain and the healing that Dustin’s Bronco brings. I lost my 21 year old son this June. My world is broken, but a Bronco will help me heal myself. Connor had gotten a Great Dane that quickly out grew his Challenger. He would borrow our Tahoe constantly to take Bri to the dog park. He decided as soon as the new Bronco was to be released he was buying one. He didn’t make it to the reservation date... Well we didn’t know what to do with his Challenger. We couldn’t get rid of it and it hurt to see it sit out front. I was laying in bed on night looking at his pictures through Facebook as I had been doing every night and there it was...a news article about the reservation window opened that day. In an instance I knew what to do. Connor was waiting for his Bronco and it was time. His Challenger would be traded for the Bronco. After reserving, I’ve waited for Build and Pricing and now I build it a few times a day. Just waiting for the order date to arrive. Kind of cool 2 Broncos helping 2 dads heal...Heal’n thru Wheel’n has been born. I know nothing about cars, off-roading, or blogging; I’m learning as I’ll be videoing my journey going forward. See you all on the trails.

Outliving a child should never happen. As a father you took a Bronco passion and made your sons dream come true. You and your wife are a testimony to all parents like myself. My parents lost their youngest, my sister at the age of 20. Thank you for reminding the Bronco family and enthusiasts what matters most. The investment of time with your son, the scraped knuckles, and the vision shared with a loving father and supportive mother is the greatest treasure that can never be taken away. I am one of many who now has the pleasure of knowing your son without ever meeting him because you shared his dream and vision with the world. I am reminded that my Bronco and the investment of time and resources is secondary to the family I've been blessed with. As a father of two sons and a daughter I extend my deepest condolences to you and your family. I would love to stand on the sidelines and witness the reunion with your son when you are once again reunited. Our faith and family are priceless. My sincerest blessings go out to you and your family.
