    If you compare the line Lewis took to pass LeClerc and compare it to the line he took with Max on the same race the difference will be clear: Lewis went wide and you can’t just ignore that on a track where Lewis has won 8 times. The issue isn’t whether he intended to collide. The issue is that he either overshot (driver error doesn’t excuse you from strong penalties) or he intended to force Max wider. Either way it’s on Hamilton.

    • @blazehudson2147
      @blazehudson2147 Год назад +18

      Totally agree. He knew he was not going to be able to ride the inside track. Max left room for Lewis to take a controlled turn. Lewis is is cheating the turn. If the outside driver gives space, then he will will have to break or come off the outside end of the turn. This is what happened to LeClerc. Lewis seems to like this move. He did the same thing to Albon. The outside driver is in a defenseless position. Not sure why stewards and analysts thing this is a driving incident.

      @CarlosSamuel-ms9ee Год назад +1

      It's not that it deosnt matter if her intended to make contact, far from it, its that there are two different issues. One is the incident itself, the other is intent. On the incident itself Hamilton was clearly at fault, it was nevertheless an unremarkable error. He overtook Max on a narrow line and didn't sufficiently account for the reduced speed he would be about to carry through the corner. On its own merits that is a fairly common mistake that happens multiple times every race weekend, and thus is not worthy of an especially heavy penalty. If you intentionally take someone out, then you could easily be black flagged. In this case I don't see any evidence of the latter. It is unfair that Hamilton should benefit from his own mistake at Max's expense. However, that doesn't make any difference to the application of the rules. If anything, a 10 second penalty was a stronger penalty than you would expect judging the incident purely on its own merits.

      With increased risk comes increased responsibility.
      Also, since there isn't even a braking zone in this corner missing the apex by as much as Hamilton did is not a "regular mistake". If you turn in to late for some reason you can easily lift of the throttle and you'll hit the apex. Which is why you never see any blunder remotely like this. Even Bottas could do it perfectly. Even Piastri as a rookie managed to do it perfectly, but Hamilton is on a trajectory that misses the apex by at least 2 meters. But only when the championship was on the line, he was fine in that same race against Leclerc and once again a year later against Leclerc.
      This move from Hamilton is either exceptionally amateur or deliberate. In either scenario Hamilton should have been disqualified from that race.

      Why not? Red bull is trying to sue merc for the damages.
      Him leaving room for Hamilton to take the ideal line only shows that lewis was incompetent at leaving max "alive" to fight another corner.
      Also lewis could've gone more to the inside like he did when he passed Leclerc in lap 50. There he was on the green tarmac on the inside. With less speed. It's possible to overtake at copse, is it smart? Debateble. Did both take way to much speed into copse, yes. But that's the 1st lap. It just doesn't justify going off the ideal race line to tap the right rear tyre. Driver's got penalty points on their race license for far less than this. BUT if Max did this to lewis with the same victory lap max would also lost my support.

    • @Chris-xl6pd
      @Chris-xl6pd 3 года назад +30

      @@RedRingOfDead I think any legal investigation will look at one key detail, they both flew in to copse on heavy fuel and cold tyres faster and braking later than the fastest Q3 time. They both went in harder trying to out game the other driver and this is what happens. Lewis missed the apex but he didnt intentionally outwardly steer towards verstappen, they will also see max turned in, had a micro look/counter steer and carried on turning in after showing he was willing to take the risk. I see no way to claim that hamilton did this with intent.

    • @RedRingOfDead
      @RedRingOfDead 3 года назад +15

      @@Chris-xl6pd still with max being intentionally ok the outside. And lewis not even hitting apex. Remember that he could've also choose the green tarmac on the inside. Like when he overtook Leclerc in the same corner. It shows that he exactly knew what he was doing. And that infact he could've done the same in round 1. They already laid the blame on Hamilton. And is he is a prick enough to deny it's his fault. Then maybe he needs to feel the same impact. Same corner. As I've said on other video's, lewis was to emotional to make rational choices. Because max delivered a psychological heavy hit in his face during sprint. And lewis didn't want to lose his home GP. No matter what the cost was

    Reading back the comments I think the text didn't really got across like intended. Before making this animation I was convinced Hamilton simply drove out too wide, like with Albon, and was fully to blame. I was worried to be constraint to my presumptions and perhaps I forced myself a bit too much in the other way in my wording. Anyways:
    The point I am making in this video is that both drivers took way too much speed to go through the corner together. Max seemingly didn't leave a lot of room for Hamilton, but with this speed he couldn't follow a very wide outside line and still make the corner. If he steered out off track he would risk being penalized for track extending, like so often in the past. Maybe he assumed Lewis would yield like in the previous corners? But he forgot Hamilton was racing for home victory, and was not going to give way again.
    Hamilton, although he did get of his throttle before the corner (this is what I mean with backing out), he did so very much too late and was never ever making the corner with a car alongside, taking more speed at the entry than a Q3 lap without being on the ideal line. Perhaps he assumed (hoped) Verstappen would yield the place, given Lewis was convinced he was more than enough alongside? But it was Max Verstappen he was racing. Maybe Hamilton got used to fighting Bottas too much?

      I also think if Lewis did hit the apex and they didn’t touch that max just run wide.

    The biggest issue, in this case, was that while Max MAY not have been able to keep his car on track Lewis was NEVER making that corner...without some redirection and speed scrubbed from the contact with Red Bull's rear tire that is. There's no way I see it as intentional from Lewis, but my belief is it was more emotion than logic that had him trying that move. If Max goes off he loses the position but when Lewis took that line it was only ever going to end badly for Max, if not potentially for both of them.

    If both cars didn't take the normal trajectory into the corner, then both would have to be aware of their surroundings because they were side by side. The video clearly shows both going into the turn but Hamilton doesn't keep the same turning tragectory, his curve straightens out and forces Verstappen to the outside, then hits him. You can't force someone off the track nor cause an accident attempting to prevent an opponent from taking a turn, a leaway must be given.

    • @marxthesocialist5231
      @marxthesocialist5231 3 года назад

      @UCQam-1urTmOVGK157u6yjlQ Yeah I lean towards racing incident still. My only counter to the " Lewis' line would have forced Max off the road" is the fact that Lewis was already giving up on the entry of this corner. The video mentions it as well. Lewis was planning to follow Max through the corner, because if Lewis slows enough to not hit Max, his line would end at the outer apex of the corner while Maxes would probably not and Lewis would possibly have more exit speed. Thats why Lewis said " he turned into me" , because if we know that he wants to yield and follow max into the sweepers, then Max did turn in on him as he was not next to him anymore, was yielding and if max had turned in less aggresively no crash would have happened.
      Thats how I see it, Racing incident, both have equal fault. Lewis started to yield a little too late, Max turned in a little too sharp.

    Fascinating graphic. Time after time, Max expects his greater risk-taking to bully others into backing off in 50:50 situations. Hamilton clearly felt enough was enough, and as a multiple world champion, he had every right- literally- to fight his corner. The only obligation Hamilton had to back out this time was the fact that in similar situations, he has conceded previously in order to avoid collision. Verstappen and Horner's outrage is mainly because Hamilton refused to be bullied once more. I'm glad Verstappen is OK, of course, but once the heat dies down, he should learn the lesson. Some drivers you can bully, others will concede to avoid collision, but in future, don't try and throw your weight around with Hamilton.

      more input to steering: both cars are fuel heavy, god knows what kind of understeer they have. only the drivers would know.
      lewis wanted to force max into a wider line: under normal conditions, thats racing. under this condition you would probably think that backing off is the correct choice, for the safety of the other driver and sportsmanship. but both went in too deep, both took risks. i dont think ham deliberately ram into max, and im sure max thought lewis backed off and tried to close the inside line, forgeting that ham didnt yield, maybe because its ham's home race or because his vendetta to regain the championship lead but either way its kinda 50/50 leaning to ham. ham deserved the penalty and lic penalties, but it could have been either of them that would crash, or even worse both.
      im sure max hold no grudge against ham, and im sure ham apologized to max shortly after the race, or maybe during the race through team radio

I however, tend to watch people’s behavior after the fact and have concluded based on the team’s reaction and the the things they said about it before anyone could draw an intelligent and informed opinion leads me to believe that they intended for this to take place. Obviously they didn’t intend for Max to have a 51 g crash but they wanted to send a message. Lewis has done this before. I am tired of people defending Lewis as a squeaky driver that is always the victim. But people like to make an issue about shit all. And believe you me there are guys here who would disagree with me (or you) for little reason other than to try to reinforce their mistaken belief that they are smart. Sometimes it works. But there's lots of rudeness and unfounded opinions in RUclips comments. It's like the truth goes mostly unnoticed today. Making mountains outta mole hills. But I don't want to offend anyone either - it's an art that's beyond me. Seems like everyone is touchy these days. Lots of people are ven pissed off with God, so I'll never have a chance.
      I'm from Canada, and we're 'chill', eh? We're easily offended by someone who isn't chill. Maybe they get excited or have a unique opinion or likes to play music at volume past 9 o'clock (say, above -25 dB). Shhh. Someone will hear and call the authorities, eh? I'm rambling. Sorry. We practically greet each other with 'sorry' all the time. "It's a nice day, eh? Oh I'm sorry, did I offend you? Were you hoping for rain?" Ha. 😳 I'm sure you've heard comics joke about us 'nice' Canadians, eh? But we're no less offensive in our minds than anyone else - we've just been practicing a little more to be careful about what we say. Shhh. So I get that. It's boring and full of bs, but what can I do? Millions of politicians jacking up on maple syrup gets us excited, eh? Pass the beer.
      So yeah, F1 journalists, pundits, Sky TV; it's about excitement - a show, while rubbing no feathers - politically correct. Fair. Fair. But again they have their career to look after, so these kids have to be careful about what they say. They aren't pundits, they are journalists. And so they can only make a statement in the form of a question : "Did Hamilton Go Too Far? Today we'll hear the opinions of pundits who themselves have jobs to protect...so instead of telling it like it is, we'll ask the questions and you can come up with your own opinions."
      Then we have Chain Bear and Scot Mansel and others, like here, who can show us the truth. Thing is, we're in the minority. Most people see the headline on Sunday night and use that on Monday morning to present to their colleagues that they are 'in the know'. "Did you hear about Max Verstappen? What an jerk." He was going totally wide, even if max would have left him more space there's no way they could have made that corner side by side with Hamilton going that wide. And actually Lewis would have had enough space had he entered the corner slower but we all know if he had done that max would have been away by the end of it. He had two choices, either go into the corner kamikaze style and hope for the best or let max get away. However most people don't factor in that Lewis was coming in way too hot into the corner, they just see that he was side by side and conclude he had a right to the inside line. There's two problems with that though, first he was side by side only because he didn't slow down enough to make the corner, and second he didn't take the inside line, he understeered due to the speed excess and went completely wide. He would have taken max out regardless.

      Nope, it wasn't only his fault. More like Verstappen could've avoided his own crash by not trying to go for the apex, and touching wheels with lewis, who oversteered. A race incident thats what it is, and stop crying about everything thats happening in this season. You wouldn't expect title rivals to back out in a fight, would you? Thats kind of ignorant, because as I remember Verstappen is, and always were one of the most aggresive drivers on the grid, pushing down other drivers. Ham is just not letting himself, and I think thats how it should be, if we want a good title battle between them.

One of those things you sign up for if you're an F1 driver - one of those things that happens *every other race*. Wasn't that long ago drivers used to bump each other off deliberately and that was in an era where people would literally die in F1. Senna, Prost, Schumacher - all these Gods of F1 that Lewis haters say are greater than him have been guilty of deliberate ramming to take a title. Drivers rarely need to look straight ahead. They would much prefer to be obstructed on a straight than having the apex of corners blocked by two side pillars. Although it’s important to see a car in front, by the time a car is close enough ahead of u to need to react, battle or follow it’s easily visible as it’s close enough for the central pillar to not block.

    Lewis with all his experience should have known he was going to understeer because he was on the dirt with too much speed. You can see the dust coming from underneath his car just before turning in. It's a blind high speed corner and he took way too much risk. You can't make that corner at such high speed turning in such close to the inside of that corner. It was hard racing but he misjudged the situation. Even the best make mistakes.

      Verstappen having driven for 7 years with all the experience should have known to leave more space and not risk turning in expecting the other driver to back off. If Max had given him more space instead of turning in knowing he was level with him? People are ignoring the fact Max thought Hamilton would back out?, he was right, Hamilton lifted off causing understeer, when Max saw Hamiltons car pull back knowing he lifted off he should have expected Hamilton to have understeer and would run wide its what these cars do. To read many of the comments on other video's you would be made to believe Max is a saint and Hamilton tried to murder Max. No driver would cause this type of incident on purpose, if Hamilton had done it on purpose it could've caused a DNF for both resulting in a disadvantage for Hamilton.
      Incidentally FIA rules state if a car is half way past on the inside it is his corner, Hamilton was almost level and max continued to turn in. As for the penalty, this is for the crime not what becomes of the crime and it has been that way for many many years.
