  • This 1979 "G-Body" Porsche 911 has been stripped to bare metal and rebuilt from the ground up to not only a very high performance standard, but also a very high cosmetic standard. It was built by GProgramm of Oyster Bay, NY, with the goal of bringing out the very best of classic 911 styling and modern performance in an air-cooled package. It has been converted from torsion beam to coil-over suspension, with big brakes, modern Fuchs-look wheels, and a 350-horsepower 3.4L "Twin Plug" flat-six.
Learn more about GProgramm's 911 builds or commission your own at:
    www.gprogramm.com/
They drove this car all the way here from New York, 3,500 miles for Luftgek¸hlt and this is a lovely looking little '79 911.
It's been media blasted right down to the body, repainted in a lovely slate gray.
It's got the business the suspension has been completely gone through it's now on coil overs Bilstein dampers, it has Boxster Pistons at all four corners so it should be pretty thorough stopping power there's roll bar vintage style roll bar these lovely comfortable vintage look seats and a tartan that I really just have to get my hands on.
The gearbox is still a 915 version 5-speed and this company only does G body cars so it's not the full back date it's not modern 911s but only G body cars so this car only weighs 2,300 pounds and with quite a riot so let's have a go.
Now, according to the guys at GProgramm, I gotta wind out so wind it out I will.
It's got slightly bigger and we're 255 rear tire, Bridgestone Potenza Very direct steering, not power assisted.
Well rather than sit behind cars in this lovely piece of hardware, we're gonna flippen ze bitchen right here and just make ourselves a new direction.
It's got a lot of front tire, seems like it's tramlining a little bit but it might also need some alignment settings after across the US but feels real good.
It's luxurious but also got really good bolstering, it's holding me in.
Making me happy! Just a little hint of understeer on power but the lift brings it right back.
Luftgek¸hlt! Man, it's got a really good power-to-weight ratio definitely enough power to get yourself in all kinds of trouble It's linear enough and it's not overwhelming to the chassis.
Lovely day for a drive in Malibu; cool, dense air, medium humidity It's got 46mm carbs and, to be perfectly honest, I don't know what that means in the grand scheme of things but they were awfully proud of it.
Really engaging, really rewarding and I've found construction.
It was an unofficial quote bu when I said "When you build a car just like this what's the price point?" They said $200,000.
Whoa, $200,000 is quite a lot now it's not to say that there isn't quite a lot of engineering in this car, these twin plug engines I hear are quite expensive and some might say worth it and this car feels mostly very sorted.
Having said that, do I personally feel $200,000 on a regular G body Carrera that just happens to be some wonky color that's super rare? No, and people pay that all the time so what do I know? There's the 'what do I know' example for sure.
So price is relative if you can afford it, I can just tell you that it drives beautifully I can tell you that Prefer not thinking about what it would cost to build one and I can tell you that it does drive beautifully and before you commenters say that's Singer money I do have to tell you that it is not Singer money.
A Singer starts at 400 and goes up to half Singer money.
This car is 10 years older than my Fox Body which I drove up here this morning and it makes my Fox Body feel, in terms of build quality, like an absolute steaming pile of crap.
I mean I'll be honest my Fox Body's great, I love it but compared to the build quality of something like this even the basic car, there's no comparison.
There's a Nash Metropolitan around here that runs like 8's. You know making a car fast is only impressive to a certain degree.
You can't un-shitbox something no matter how much money you spend so, by starting with this beautiful well-made Porsche, you're quite ahead of the game already.
I'll say it again do I know if it's worth $200,000? It depends on how much money you have.
If you don't have $200,000 to burn then no it's not if you have a lot more than $200,000 well there' other things you can spend $200,000 on that are far dumber than this but let's not harp on the price let's just harp on the fact that I'm going to end this video with two minutes of twin plug goodness and I'll fade out check out GProgramm in the description.
Thank you so much for watching, thank you to GProgramm for bringing this car out and I'll see you guys next time.

Well, there's always next time. Just can't account for taste sometimes.

varchar I bought a 1968 912 and a 1973.5 911T and drove both of them from east coast back to California going the long route, 4500 miles. Only needed to change an old fuel line that cracked on a 911T

46mm webers are big, no read MASSIVE. 40's used to be big and mainly for racing... 34 -36mm's were where most raod cars were. The number referes to the choke size (not the warm up choke but the ventury inside the card. No wonder G-Programm where proud they got it to run well down low - must be the elctronic ignition map doing some good work!

    • @volodkovich

46mm is not big for the claimed power output.

    • @jamest5149
      @jamest5149 7 лет назад +1

I agree if talking racing or injection throttle bodies but 46mm is massive for road use and low down fueling and tractability. This would have been an un driveable beast anywhere off max rpm and throttle 20 years ago and shows the advances (no pun intended) in ignition mapping. Wonder what advances Weber have made to the triple IDA down draft cards in that time that helps here? Also wonder why they didn't go Fi with indivdual throttle bodies like Jenvey etc.

    • @samsonian

What a beautiful machine, I have to give GProgram huge credit for making this, literally taking the best of a classic icon, and rather then modify the hell out of it and give it a clearly modified look with 20" wheels and stupid camber and some wack exterior mods. They kept the delecousy of this car, to anyone who isn't too switched on with this it would come across as a restored or well maintained Porsche. It's very hard to get a car like this and only improve it further with the thanks of more modern engineering, keeping it's classy sport classic look and charerteristic, and adding a minimalistic but stand out of the crowd appearance, then improve its handling significantly. Too many modern cars really lack that driver and machine connection and can often give a numb experience, what's missing isnt the ride quality or the power, but that feeling that the car is in more control then you, especially through steering, but for those who have this sort of money to spend and don't want some out of the box race car (lamborgini's, ferrari's, new porches ect.) then what an experience this is, something that takes skill to access the power and a manual transmission. I certainly haven't driven a car of this caliber and usually shone on cars that cost this much, or especially on majority of heavy modified classic cars rather then restorations, but this is one that I would have to have in my dream collection, what a peice of art!

That is a PROPER air cooled restomod. It looks kind of strange with coil packs next to those Webers. I think if it was my car, I would have gone with an aftermarket modern fuel injection system. Just for ease of use and reliability to drive any day, anywhere. It has a REALLY good sound.

this car is perfectly restored, and its not overdone, no crazy horsepower. just a solid modern restoration. only thing i would like to change is euro-spec bumpers, us-spec bumpers look a little bit silly. on the other hand, it came with these bumpers. so i like that they have kept it original. i ♥ it :)

Lex Buren , the bumpers are all world bumpers. In '74 all 911s got them. That's a G series bumper. Prior to that, they had small bumpers and long hoods.

As someone who works in the custom/resto world, $200k seems fairly reasonable, especially for such a well sorted car like this. You could easily spend that much restoring any old muscle car or whatever and end up with a slow pos thats going to be worth a quarter of what you spent to build it.

New Porsches are HUGE, heavy, the edges rounder than they used to be; perhaps bulbous design fits a bloated driver more now..

    • @NoBrakes23
      @NoBrakes23 7 лет назад +1

Porsche model-bloats like Ford in the 1960s. Some of that is for safety regs, some of that is for fashion, but regardless, it sucks. The old 911s were true sports cars, and modern 911s are bloated Grand Touring coupes. I don't know if that means they lost their way, but the difference is undeniable.

markw993 that's because you're less likely to die now. they don't make them more robust "just because"

Hey Matt, really like the addition to the gimble on the front facing GoPro! Makes watching it smooth and also gives a better feel for the car's suspension since you can see the hood moving around instead of the camera jumping when you hit a bump! Awesome car too, gonna go back and finish watching haha

thats not my point, im talking about a diferent aproach on the one take videos, he has his own opinions regarding the cars he drives and i respect that, just like regular car reviews and doug demuro, they all have there own personal style, the point is the 2m silence just driving the car its a diferent take, i like the idea even if it was cut down to 1m silente driving, it allows us , to enjoy to some extent the car engine and its quirks... matt should embrace adding this to its videos, for me its a bonus feature...
