Music: Morning Star, James Proctor Harding (1850-1911)
Descant: Richard Webster (b. 1952)
Words: Reginald Heber (1783-1826)
1 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;
star of the east, the horizon adorning,
guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
2 Cold on his cradle the dew-drops are shining;
low lies his head with the beasts of the stall;
angels adore him in slumber reclining,
Maker and Monarch and Saviour of all.
3 Shall we then yield him, in costly devotion,
odours of Edom, and offerings divine,
gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
myrrh from the forest, or gold from the mine?
4 Vainly we offer each ample oblation,
vainly with gifts would his favour secure:
richer by far is the heart's adoration,
dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.
5 Brightest and best of the stars of the morning,
dawn on our darkness, and lend us thine aid;
star of the east, the horizon adorning,
guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.
All the tunes of this hymn are heartwarming. Epiphany, Morning Star, Wessex, Spean. All glorious ❤
What a lovely Epiphany hymn!
Every Christmas there'll be a carol or a tune that'll touch my heart of hearts. For 2024, the tune to "Brightest and Best" here touches the core of my soul. Thank you so much for this.
One of my favorites from the decades when I was a High Church Anglican ! I have always heard that the Texas Anglicans have held high the liturgical standards in this time of degeneracy on all fronts, and your church seems to demonstrate it. Keep up the good work... Blessings from Pennsylvania !
No Anglican Church where you are now in PA? Western PA has an Anglican seminary and several churches in the Pittsburg area.
Still the finest service player I've ever heard! Happy Epiphany to you!
Beautifully arranged and executed. Thank you.
Wonderful Rendition
Beautiful! Sorry that the congregation didn’t sit and listen to the postlude. 😢
That third verse harmonization is awesome.
Amen!
I sang this song in church today, but it used different lyrics.
Absolutely Wonderful.
Is it Possible to Share us the Music with us. If yes Please do send us. Thank you...
AH... a High Altar unmolested by miscreants filled with Vatican 2 fervor ! Give thanks that your holy temple was not desecrated ! And you have a full choir, and a large congregation, and an Organist who selects solid, classical and stately music. How much you have to be thankful for. Many Years to the good people of Church of the Incarnation !
Dear "pravoslavnik," your ignorance is breathtaking! Why did you not notice that this church building has no tabernacle? It is an Episcopalian/Anglican building, which was not affected by a Catholic/Vatican council. Moreover, it was not "Vatican 2" that caused any harm, but rather some misguided people in post-conciliar times who implemented some regrettable changes that the majority of the Fathers of the council did not have in mind.
@Ian Laing See how they love one another !
Ah yes. The gladiators have come out in full force. That’s why Jesus had to pray the prayer for the Church in John 17 (oh I know my scriptures). God help us to love one another!
I’d like to know where this is performed. It’s beautiful
