The Hero 10 is a superb action camera in my opinion, it improves on everything that slowed down my workflow in the Hero 9. I've rarely filmed more than 5 minutes with my GoPro at a time, but as you can see from the comments, some people expect it to last 30-60 minutes. This however was worst case scenario when it comes to the overheating test, I think 30 minutes is very reasonable. Yes, I look forward to the update for the Hero 10, I'm especially interested if the Max Lens Mod will be filming in 4k 🤟🏻
We have a fishing channel and we typically fish for 2-4 hours, sometimes longer in one outing. When we fish, we almost always have to just run the GoPro non-stop to get constant footage, you never know when you'll get a fish and the hindsight feature doesn't really save on heat, it just saves on card storage. My GoPro 10 will last between 15-25 minutes if the ambient temperature is above 85-90F. The reason they overheat for guys like us that are fishing is due to the sun/lack of air flow over the camera. I turn mine down to 4k 30fps, I turn hypersmooth to the 1st setting above off, and it still overheats. The only solution seems to be to not use the internal battery packs and instead buy an external pack. It seems most of the heat comes from the battery packs, when removed it seems to just barely be able to keep up from the reviews I've seen. I'm going to have to buy an expensive external battery pack and remove the internal battery just to use the camera for my use case. I love the camera/quality etc., just wish it didn't overheat so frequently.

At a battery temperature of 14F / -10C (note: this is the battery’s temperature, it can be even colder outside), with HERO10 Black the Enduro battery enables, on average, 56 minutes of 5.3K60 video, 50 minutes of 4K120 video, 76 minutes of 4K60 video and 115 minutes of 1080p30 video recording. Enduro also significantly increases video recording time in moderate temperatures. For example, with HERO10 Black during typical outdoor activities at a temperature of 77F / 25C, the Enduro battery enables, on average, 60 minutes of 5.3K60 video (a 28% improvement over the standard battery), 51 minutes of 4K120 video (a 40% improvement over the standard battery), 71 minutes of 4K60 video (a 13% improvement over the standard battery) and 120 minutes of 1080p30 video recording. Stay tuned for more information on the November launch of the new Enduro battery and end of October release of the updated HERO10 firmware featuring the new Performance Video Modes. Hi guys, that's great to hear, I'm sure that'll make a lot of users very happy, I know a lot of us are looking forward to the upcoming update. The Enduro battery sounds like a serious bit of power in a tiny package, I'll make sure to pick up a couple and show off what they can do outside when the temps drop out here in Poland, which should be soon (or I'll stick it in the freezer at a controlled temp). Thanks for the heads up, and if you guys want to get in touch personally for future projects and videos you'll find my email on my RUclips page.
It's the battery that's the overheating problem. I've removed the battery on my GP10 and used my media mod to power via USB powerbank. No overheating problem, no memory failure. Ok this may not be an ideal solution but if you need to record at 5.3k for a prolonged time then the only solution is to remove the battery and power via USB.
Yes, taking out the battery adds that extra bit of airflow to the insides, as you said though, in certain situations, it’s not an ideal fix using external power.
That’s super useful to know! I’m planning on a road trip next year, so plugging in to the car via a battery pack should stop it messing up the drive lapse. Thanks!
My hero9 overheats even at 1080, a camera at that price point should not need to be modified or used in a altered way just to get it to work, I belive this is where people get angry, my 9 has also overheated in just standby meaning its just on not recording 5 min later it's very hot to the touch
I don’t think I’ve gotten 30 minutes out of a go pro since the second generation. In fact, with a couple of the generations the battery was dead almost immediately after I turned it on without the Wi-Fi enabled. Glad to see you’re pushing 30.
Thanks for your review. I now understand and agree with what you said at the beginning - GoPros are an action camera that needs air flow around it. The GoPro 10 may still overheat with air around it, but hopefully it should last longer. Just setting them on a desk is the worst case testing for overheating. Question 1: If it does overheat, no matter the conditions, how long do we need to wait to use the camera again? Question 2: Is just throwing a new battery into a hot camera, does that work and would the operating times be shorter? Thanks and take care.
Hi Phillip, It’s funny how other YT channels are not using it for it’s intended purpose and tries to defy thermal physics. Agree with you on your comments in this video. I’m curious if you used one of the Ulanzi battery grip, BG-2/3/4 with battery out or door open and also use the display mod stationary on tripod, I’ll bet that it will last much longer as the culprit is usually the processor heating up at high frame rates (expected) + battery + LCD. So when you remove the latter two, you should theoretically get longer shooting times before overheating.
Yes, it's odd so many people are testing it and bashing it whilst using it as a studio camera. I specially put it through this test, as this is worst case scenario, but I think outside, in the wind, being used as an action camera it should last 1 hour, which is far more than anyone really uses an action camera for in these settings. No, I'm afraid I haven't tested those options.
Underwater 9 is useless. It overheated on the 1st dive now it overheats in any situation after a couple minutes. I feel some serious buyers remorse considering all i needed was a decent undewater recording device with stabilization. I've had the 1, 2, 4, and 9. None of them were consistant. All of them were not worth the frustration and dissapointment that they bring. The marketed capabilites fell way, WAY short. Done with GoPro forever full stop.
You ask what the hell we are doing that makes the GoPro 10 overheat, so here it goes :). We have a fishing channel and we typically fish for 2-4 hours, sometimes longer in one outing. When we fish, we almost always have to just run the GoPro non-stop to get constant footage, you never know when you'll get a fish and the hindsight feature doesn't really save on heat, it just saves on card storage. overheats inside a car using it as a POV or cabin view, overheats doing a driving timelapse......... races are more than 5 minutes. will probably overheat doing a 30 min rock climb in the sun with no wind........ there are plenty applications where 1hr+ will be required. i dare say it would overheat in a dive case doing a diving session where turning on and off isn't an option...... they suggest using it as a webcam for goodness sake and webinars can go for hours....... Gopop over promised and underdelivered once more
I don’t think any action cam can record for more than an hour straight without the battery dying. If you use it as a webcam then you’re more than likely going to power it via usb and it absolutely will not overheat in that scenario. Also, it’s already been tested that recording a timelapse doesn’t overheat the camera. The problem lies in frame rate. The higher the frame rate, the warmer it will get in a shorter amount of time, and that’s only if the camera is sitting stationary, on a desk, without a tripod. If the camera is moving around and getting air passed over it, it dramatically increases recording times. Lastly, GoPro has already released firmware updates addressing the issue.
Well for one GoPro needs to stop making GoPro's waterproof out of the box and go back to if you want to take your GoPro into the water then put it into the clear waterproof case they sell. I mean think about it. If they make it waterproof out of the box but you don't use it in water then one air can't get into it as well as heat can't get out of it and that means that you are only relying on heat dissipation and that's slow. In short a black box that's air tight with hot electronics inside is just a recipe for disaster if you're going to be using it in open air on a hot day. And I can already hear you people thinking of saying (well what if I want to do a timelaps) and to that I would say put a rain coat on it IE the clear waterproof case.
I guess it's just a lot more convenient this way. I used to hate putting on that damn plastic case, I have one for the Hero 9 and Hero 10 to take it deeper, but I don't really use it as I don't dive that deep. I guess GoPro is appealing to the majority, it's hard to keep everyone happy.
@@PhillipSkraba I totally understand, but I'm going to ask you something and I ask that you answer honestly. So what would be more frustrating? A having to put on a waterproof case when you want to go into the water, or B having your GoPro overheat and shutting down right when you're about to catch that 1 in a million rare golden moment and you missed it? Now I don't know if you'll answer honestly here or defend GoPro's decision to make GoPro's waterproof out of the box, but as for me yes I would be a little bummed to have to take the extra step to make it waterproof, but on the flip side, if I lost that golden shot cause my GoPro self destructed I would most certainly destruct it upside a brick wall, ground or rock. Now I'm going to touch a bit on this video. So you say these are action cams and they need to be moving to keep cool, OK I can humor you for a while but now it's time to shut that statement down and prove that the design is flawed just from this video. So your test was done in an air conditioned house and most people keep there AC set to between 70 and 80 F and there's no direct sun light shining right on them. So these two GoPro's killed themselves after just three minutes crazy huh. Now for outside where in the summertime some people have temps well over 100 F with hot sunny days and sun just blasting this poor little black airtight box then this things going to overheat no matter how fast you're moving or not moving. I'm going to cut this off here. There was more I was going to say, but I'm not trying to wright an autobiography here lol.
I would say that using the media mod would probably help to decrease overheating since you have to take the battery door completely off and the media mod is not waterproof. I bet a lot of heat can be dissipated with that accessory on.
I think I speak for everyone when I ask, when will we see the full unedited versions of the cameras’ POV? 😆 Seriously though, good video. I have found that taking the battery out (of the 9) and having the camera plugged in with the battery door removed will allow for continuous recording without interruption. That’s with the front screen ON in 4K. At full capability I have been able to do the same at risk of (at times) the camera trying to record more information than the card, even at higher mbps, can take in at once… resulting in the camera canceling the record. So that a “use at one’s own risk”…
haha, I'm totally going to do a POV video with this little sucker, he's a ton of fun! Yes, with the battery out and a powerbank these guys can go a lot longer, but then it's sometimes hard to use them in certain situations.
I’ve found after testing that both come out pretty similar in overheating tests when they are static in enclosed spaces. Outside it’s a whole different ballgame.
Can you clarify if its the camera or the battery thats over heating. Does this happen with an external battery? If your skiing in cold temps does this happen at all?
This is the camera. If you're skiing, even moving, I don't think this will be a problem. Mind you it hit 30 minutes, it's very, very rare that someone will be filming that long anyhow.
@@PhillipSkraba true just wondering. Its funny upgrading from the 7 that has poor battery life in cold temps. Need a handful of batteries per day. Maybe running hot will actually be beneficial.
Well, most cameras I've used in my life suffer from bad battery life in the cold, that's only normal, but IF you keep the batteries warm before you take them out in the cold, they will last a lot longer. So no keeping them in your backpack, but rather in your pocket, next to your body. Keep them warm.
If you are using your GoPro as an action camera it shouldn't be too much of a problem. That really depends how long you're filming for, I mean 30 minutes is way more than I need, but you may have different needs.
Oh yes, a lot more, I wanted everything on, and it inside in a studio environment for worst case scenario testing. I think 30 minutes is more than enough, and I'm sure outside with wind it'll last even longer, add power saving options I recommended in the video and it'll no doubt be close to hitting an hour which is just crazy.
We just bought one as a zoom streaming device. We used it for over 3.75 hours plugged in to the computer and it was really hot when we were done. This was flat on the desk top. I will use your recommendations of settings and tripod. I'm sure it'll still be warm tho
@@PhillipSkraba it helps me decide which one to buy.. I already have 2x GoPro Hero 8 and GoPro Max. now I have something to consider before buying these two awesome action cam. anyway I use it for my motovlogging so I don't have to worry about the overheating specially with the tips you mention. Cheers!..
One would think if you pay more for a device, it should in theory last much longer than an older device. In other news, I did not over heat watching this video.
I would expect it to last longer, exactly! I doubt an update will fix this, but it's also not made for sitting in one place in a studio, so this is worst case scenario. I did overheat filming this 😂
ok so I got a gopro hero 8 . I'm a hard landscaper. do lots of patios and ex ex . I use my gopro for so wallk through video. and time lapse. and use dji mini 2 as my drone footage. what is the best camera for my situation 🤔 I've looked at insta360 one r. and to be honest I'm a bit confused about what I should get. thank you for the video.
Personally I'd go with the One R as you have the option to add the 360 mod and do funky time lapses of you doing patios without having to move the camera. The GoPro Hero 10 is great too, but the Insta360 One R is so much more diverse in what it can do!
I think most hardware in general has reached its peak potential with today's available batteries. I'm sure the introduction of solid state batteries will give us a few years of bumping up tech to another level.
haha, that's just me being bored in the studio 😂 So both of them heat up pretty badly when in a studio environment, it's best to get those suckers outside in the wind, that's what they're made for 🤟🏻
I know I am asking this on a older video , but lets see if it gets to you, my GoPro 9 not only overheated but it got so hot when charging smoke started comin out oif it on charge and now it wont turn on
Older, newer, if I get a comment and I have time to answer it without my two children jumping on my head, then sure, I'll answer it. Now that's F'd up, I'd send that straight back to GoPro and tell them what I think. A GoPro should never start smoking, unless you're using some kind of fancy 3rd party battery.
lol...a bit short sighted view much ? when involved with water, you cannot change battery etc, and I expect a camera to run till the battery is dead. My old hero4 runs in a housing at 180p 60 as long as the battery will provide power. I would think the later models should do a far longer stint and they also should run continuous if supplied by a power source when not in water. I have not tried either, but if these newer ones will not do this, then I may find something that will. Hell my old DSLR will not turn off if I run it constant.
@@PhillipSkraba I think my hero4, which I pulled out the decade old batteries and charged, does about 40 mins at 1080p 60 in an underwater housing. I am waiting on an 11, and will prob put in housing as the audio is not so important but the keeping water off or out is for me. I will be really peeved if this new camera cannot do 1080p 60 or more without getting hot, there must be a way to put a heatsink that can be placed where an external heat sink can also be attached for certain uses.
@@PhillipSkraba I mean there is a clue in the name of that camera for what use it was made:) I mean you don’t shower in a sink ( some might do it but is it practical or was the sink made to have a shower) you simply use a shower 🤷♂️😂
Yep, it's an action camera, it's made to be trashed, not polished, and it's made to blast through the wind, so sitting there in someones studio is just silly. Even walking around vlogging will cool this little sucker.
@@PhillipSkraba exactly ACTION what means some kind of action not just dropping on the table and watching it turning from black to redish black to red, and eureka you have a fkin heater 👍😂
When I'm flying in light aircraft I definitely want it to last more than 30 mins! For this reason I always have to record in 1080p so my 9 doesn't shut down, I'm sure there are many other reasons people need more than 30mins. Also when you keep it plugged in, I'm sure it heats up the battery even more so.
I'm guessing up there the wind cools the GoPro down enough for it to well outlast 30 minutes. This was windows closed in a room, so overheating sitting in one spot was worst case scenario. When it's plugged in you can actually take the battery out for extra cooling, so it shouldn't heat up when plugged in, but with the door off that isn't the best situation for everyone. I'd use a remote when flying up there with a battery, that would help capture the moments you want. From what GoPro state 75% of its users film for no longer than 1:30 mins, so 30 mins is really overkill, but sure, I acknowledge that 25% of the rest of the GoPro community will use it for longer.
@@PhillipSkraba I record in the cockpit of an airplane, when the sun hits the dash, it can make surfaces on the dash get really hot and it's like a greenhouse in there when you are on the ground and until you get some airflow. I've had hero 9's overheat when in direct sunlight on the dash of my plane before only recording in 2.7k! I had to scale back to 1080... I may have to try the external powered method and take out the battery :) Thanks for the reply.
That does sounds like a very difficult situation, yes, taking the battery out and connecting it to a powerbank may be the way forward, let me know if that works!
Interesting. I would have thought that the Hero 10 would have been designed to manage the heat better than the Hero 9. That being said I have never had an over heating problem with my Hero 9 mounted to my trike or motorcycle. I run out of memory on my micro SD card before anything else. BIG thumbs up mate.
Exactly, me too, so I was surprised both turned off at the same time. I personally have never ever had a GoPro overheat, this was the first time I've even seen this screen, and like I said, this was worst case scenario, it's not what the camera is made for and it's very rare someone uses it for more than a few minutes anyhow.
@@PhillipSkraba I get what your saying. You're way more of an expert but I've used my osmo action for more than 20 min but rarely. It's just the fact that it's 400$ plus. By the way ur the only reviewer that tested it that got more than 20 min. I've seen 8 overheat videos all of them shut off between 12-20 min depending on settings. Still some sad sheet. Good review appreciate your insight.✌️
Yes it's an action camera but for $500 it should not have this problem. An iPhone is not meant to be a camera, it's primarily a phone and does not overheat
The Action does a good job, though it doesn't pack as big a punch as this little monster. The Action 2 though, from the leaks, looks like it'll get in the ring with the GoPro 10 with no problems, can't wait for that!
@@PhillipSkraba absolutely agree, I think the Osmo Acton still produces ‘action cam’ level footage whereas the GoPro 9 upward models is getting close to hybrid camera quality but they are known to crash too often. I had a GoPro 7 but left the brand since as it was too unreliable.
I have the Hero 3, Hero 7, Hero 9 and Hero 10, and I've never had one crash on me. This is actually the first time I've seen one overheat as I've never really recorded a clip over 10 minutes, as I doubt few people have.
@@PhillipSkraba You're lucky then brat, because GoPros are notorious for crashing - perhaps people do use them for too long and the heat causes crashes. To me, the Sony FDR X300 is still the best travel action cam - just turns on, does it's job, records great footage has natural optical stablisation and never crashes.
Well, for such a tiny box, it's pretty good, though since a recent update they hardly ever overheat, especially if you're using them as an actual action camera.
Right, so your several thousand dollar MILC cannot record a time long enough to capture the Hero 9 or Hero 10 overheating? LMAO, and this is the problem with YT.
Yes, the older Sony cameras have a 30 min cap on recording. Yes, this is directly connected to RUclips, a conspiracy. The actual problem though is people who use the abbreviation LMAO, that’s what’s wrong with this world, and RUclips.

No way, they still make camcorders?!!
I don’t think I’ve gotten 30 minutes out of a go pro since the second generation. In fact, with a couple of the generations the battery was dead almost immediately after I turned it on without the Wi-Fi enabled. Glad to see you’re pushing 30.
Really? The Hero 9 and Hero 10 have very good batteries, much better than in my Hero 7 🔥
@@PhillipSkraba thx! I’ll have to try them.
Hi Phillip,
It’s funny how other YT channels are not using it for it’s intended purpose and tries to defy thermal physics.
Thanks for sharing..... Does the Hero10 have screen saver after one minute which would turn both off? Thanks again. 👍😊
Yes, you can have the screen saver on which will save you battery power and overheating, that's for sure!
I love the camera/quality etc., just wish it didn't overheat so frequently.
overheats inside a car using it as a POV or cabin view, overheats doing a driving timelapse......... races are more than 5 minutes. will probably overheat doing a 30 min rock climb in the sun with no wind........ there are plenty applications where 1hr+ will be required. i dare say it would overheat in a dive case doing a diving session where turning on and off isn't an option...... they suggest using it as a webcam for goodness sake and webinars can go for hours....... Gopop over promised and underdelivered once more
So, what you're saying is if someone made a cooling system for the GoPro it would sell like hot cakes!
Seriously though, good video.
Yes, overheating problem in all resolutions. In gopro hero 9 only in 4k 60fps or 5k that is normal but, in gopro hero 10 in all resolutions
I’ve found after testing that both come out pretty similar in overheating tests when they are static in enclosed spaces. Outside it’s a whole different ballgame.
@@PhillipSkraba outside i found it much worse being matt black; its too hot to hold before you even turn it on on during the Aussie summers.
No wonder they advertise it in so cold climates 😂
@@PhillipSkraba 😂😂😂😂😂😂I hadn't thought about it but, it makes sense
@@PhillipSkraba yes, that has proven helpful. Sitting on a helmet mount is the problem. We'll see may the larger 9/10 battery with last longer.
Oh yes, the Hero 9 battery well outlasts my Hero 7 batteries!
What you think overhead g10 in resolution 1080 at 60 fps? In same test like you did.
If you are using your GoPro as an action camera it shouldn't be too much of a problem. That really depends how long you're filming for, I mean 30 minutes is way more than I need, but you may have different needs.
Awesome intro. Great comparison! Thanks.
Thanks Lukas!
Power consumption is significantly higher with the screens permanently on.
Another amazing video!!
Thanks Todor!
We just bought one as a zoom streaming device. We used it for over 3.75 hours plugged in to the computer and it was really hot when we were done. This was flat on the desk top. I will use your recommendations of settings and tripod. I'm sure it'll still be warm tho
Very informative video with good sense of Humour.. I love it..
Thanks! I thought I should put these two up against worse case scenario in my studio, 30 minutes isn't bad!
Cheers!..
I think the GoPro 10 is the one to go for, it's much more responsive, and of course has basically twice of everything.
@@PhillipSkraba many thanks for getting back to me. 🙂
Anytime!
I would even consider insta 360 one x / one x 2 :) I use that for real estate walkthroughs
I think most hardware in general has reached its peak potential with today's available batteries. I'm sure the introduction of solid state batteries will give us a few years of bumping up tech to another level.
Yes, the batteries really need a tech update, we'll see what the future holds!
I am glad that I have the 9 and I will dont sell to buy the 10. Great point Phillip!
Both excellent, excellent action cameras!
@@PhillipSkraba But 10 heats like mtf. I loved when you open the box the fire coming out of the box was hilarious.
haha, that's just me being bored in the studio 😂 So both of them heat up pretty badly when in a studio environment, it's best to get those suckers outside in the wind, that's what they're made for 🤟🏻
I know I am asking this on a older video , but lets see if it gets to you, my GoPro 9 not only overheated but it got so hot when charging smoke started comin out oif it on charge and now it wont turn on
Older, newer, if I get a comment and I have time to answer it without my two children jumping on my head, then sure, I'll answer it. Now that's F'd up, I'd send that straight back to GoPro and tell them what I think. A GoPro should never start smoking, unless you're using some kind of fancy 3rd party battery.
@@PhillipSkraba Thanks for seeing my comment and replying, original battery,
Well, I'd get straight on to GoPro as that could have caused a fire.
@@PhillipSkraba do you think they will fix it or replace it ?
I have no idea, but it's worth a try getting in touch with them and showing them evidence.
Thanks for this video.
You're welcome Rich!
lol...a bit short sighted view much ? when involved with water, you cannot change battery etc, and I expect a camera to run till the battery is dead.
I’m afraid recently I’ve been having more and more problems due to GoPro’s batteries.
Correct.
Yep!
😂 love it „ live with it“ 🤌😂😂
haha, yep, you just have to 😂
@@PhillipSkraba I mean there is a clue in the name of that camera for what use it was made:) I mean you don’t shower in a sink ( some might do it but is it practical or was the sink made to have a shower) you simply use a shower 🤷♂️😂
Yep, it's an action camera, it's made to be trashed, not polished, and it's made to blast through the wind, so sitting there in someones studio is just silly. Even walking around vlogging will cool this little sucker.
@@PhillipSkraba exactly ACTION what means some kind of action not just dropping on the table and watching it turning from black to redish black to red, and eureka you have a fkin heater 👍😂
haha, yep, exactly!
sad it does not film in a static situation. disadvantage for time lapse.
Best keep it next to a fridge.
I may have to try the external powered method and take out the battery :)
Thanks for the reply.
It would be great if it didn't, mind you, I've had my iPhone overheat on me!
Hey bro, please do this test on the DJI Osmo Action - you will be surprised.
Yes, never any problems with the GoPros, mind you I love the Insta360 GO 2, that thing is awesome too!
I go bicycling for 8 hours
Not ok. These cameras are trash if they overheat.
Well, for such a tiny box, it's pretty good, though since a recent update they hardly ever overheat, especially if you're using them as an actual action camera.
I used GoPro hero 9 in my channel making videos best camera for action 👍👍👍
It's a pretty great one, that's true!
