Indians do strain rice , But only basmati rice ( very long grain ) because every grain needs to be separate( or else you would dishonour your parents ) and since it will be cooked again ( like in a biryani or jeera rice etc ) it’s important to strain the rice so that it’s not fully cooked .

Growing up in a Bengali house hold, we were taught to cook our rice in a deep pot with loads of water. We would have to keep an eye on it and then when it started to boil check that the rice is more then half cooked. Once checked we would put the lid on the pot and drain straight from it into the sink, getting rid of extra water so when we put it back of the stove it’s not sticks rice just more loose grains instead. We don’t use rice cookers like East Asians do. Wish we did though would have been so much more quicker and easier.

Those who are fighting in the comment section about straining the rice. Calm down. Indians strain all kinds of rice for our usual rice dishes. In Bengali we want our "Bhaat" (Steamed rice) to be "jhorjhore" (non-sticky and saperated). So the point is to strain. We don't usually eat sticky rice.
But there are sometimes when we eat something similar to sticky rice, at least in Bengal, we call it "Phena Bhaat". For this, we pressure-cook the rice (sometimes with lentils) and that isn't strained later. But obviously, it isn't an everyday staple.

The traditional method of cooking rice is by draining the excess water, which is also healthy as it drains the excess starch from rice. Even now when plain rice is cooked in large quantities for wedding parties, other such events, draining method is preferred. It's common in restaurants and hotels too.
BTW what you cooked is jeera fried rice, for any fried rice recipes, cooking rice in rice cooker is safe. jeera pulao would also have been much more easier to cook.
