I love the double meaning behind the name "Forger". There's the obvious pun that they're fake. A "forgery". But to forge also means to strengthen and mold, like steel. This family started out as a "forgery" but over time, the relationships are forged into unbreakable bonds.
I have so many memories of media depicting family life as utterly unrewarding and miserable when I was a kid. You can't convince me that didn’t affect my generation in a bad way, whether it was intentionally or not.
Absolutely. The overwhelming message that I got from the media I consumed as a child was that being an adult was awful. Working a job was Hell, marriage was unrewarding and children were hellions who would only make you miserable. But you still had to do it, because otherwise you were a Loser. It made me miserable and even though I've seen through it, it's still got hooks in me deep down.
Try naming an unironically positive portrayal of a traditional family in Western media that's less than 30 years old. That shouldn't be hard, but it is. You can probably find something if you rummage around hard enough, but you shouldn't have to go looking. The fact remains that "family bad" portrayals outnumber them a hundred to one.
Yep. I get this. I knew family was good (as a Catholic) but I was starting to focus more (pouring myself into it) on my pro life work instead of thinking about the future, the children, that is what pro lifers fight for, and considering having some of my own. I used to think that family was sort of like the endgame stuff that you do after you beat the video game, but family IS the video game.
My grandfather, who grew up in the great depression, would always tell young couples that "there is never a 'good' time to have kids." So to just have them and figure it out.
i always say people in the prehistoric age had children and died at 30. people during the black death had kids and they lost almost everyone they loved. people during the industrial revolution had kids and their kids died at 4. people during the great depression had kids and they were homeless. you have healthcare, sanitation, cheap food and won't have to go to war, so what's stopping you? it rarely changes their mind. mostly it's a matter of "i'm too lazy to improve myself and want to do things that bring me short term pleasure, forever." it's depressing. me and my fiancé are planning to have children, her brother is set on not having them. it's a shame, because the guy happens to be really good with kids. here's what i tell people who are afraid they will be bad parents: your parent weren't good. that's ok. you understand their mistakes, you don't have to be a perfect parents, you need only to be better than they were. maybe you won't be the best parent, maybe your kids will hate you, but you'll have been better, an impovement in your bloodline. if your parents raped, beat and yelled at you, then even if you beat and yell at your kids, you'll have been better. your kids might hate you, and if they have kids they'll only yell at their kids, and their kids won't even yell, they'll be patient with their kids and voilà, the trauma has healed. it doesn't have to be solved in 1 generation, but if you refuse to make more generations the trauma has won. its like cutting off your arm because your finger is broken. you don't give it the chance to heal and that's a shame.
Imagine to meet your ancestors who lived through plagues like the Black Death, stormy weathers, freezing winters, wars and devistations, never knowing whether they would really survive to live one more year and tell them you never had children cause you in the 21st century with indoor heating, plumbing, fridges and freezers and high life expectancy just didn't have children because the times were hard
@@bellphorusnknight I don't think it's the standards of living that are a problem. Even poor people today in the First World and Developing World have access to luxuries beyond the wildest imaginations of ancient Kings and Emperors.
These themes are also the moral of the Pixar movie Up, Carl is frustrated because he spends his whole life wanting to go on a grand adventure but isn't able to, not even the adventure of having a child of his own. In the movie as he finally does go on an adventure and even meets his adventurer hero he realizes that the adventurer's life is empty, and that his fatheresque friendship with the little boy Russell is what's important, and by the end of the movie he realizes that his marriage to his wife who he truly loved was his grand adventure, and not only that he'll get to have another one as Russell's friend.
Pixar, despite being part of the Disney, has some really good messaging in their movies, such as WALLI-E being about choosing real life over confort despite being dangerous, or The Incredibles being about not all men are created equal, and thats good (and Family importance as well) or even Cars, telling that being laser focused on success and prestige will lead you astray and lose sight of what really matters, bonds and communal life, and how modern life moved everyone away from community life by force.
I live in America and have friends all around the world. I was skyping with my friend in Indonesia the other day and he made a really good point. In Indonesia and countries like that, you can live poor and still get by. The trouble with America is that you really can't live poor. My wife and I looked into cutting everything, even internet, to minimize our bills down to the absolute bare necessities and it's still an obscene amount we have to pay every month in bare essential bills. A family in Indonesia lives on a tenth of our income, but they can do it while owning a home and vehicle without needing to go into debt for any of it. On top of that, economies like that tend to be much more geared towards family trades, which is healthier for the family structure and passing on traditions. The west is collapsing and our wealth is a sham. It's all debt, a Ponzi scheme setup by our grandparents on our backs and the bill is coming due.
I despair weekly for this exact reason. I am comforted by knowing more people understand now. To those who have everything, More shall be given. From those who have nothing, Everything shall be taken. From the Bible.

My little brother got married a few years ago, but he had no interest in having children-that is, until he watched Spy X Family and Ascendence of a Bookworm. Seeing the loving and adorable ways family is represented in those anime helped bring his mind around to the possibility that raising a family can be beautiful, and even fun. His first child, a little girl they named Penelope, was born just two weeks ago. I’m proud to say I had a hand in this, as I was the one who recommended he watch these shows in the first place!
@@bone6495 Yeah, I know, marriage is a dumb risk for a guy to take. I wish it wasn’t so. My own experiences with women have taught me not to give one that much power over me ever again. But if anyone can make it work, my brother and sister-in-law can. Not saying the odds are in their favor, but I have a lot more hope for them than I have for most. If only we could all be so lucky!
I think what it is about anime that Westerners find so appealing is that, unlike our media, anime is nearly always optimistic. Even its shlock is optimistic. In Western media, everything is deconstruction, everything is made ugly, and I don't mean just aesthetically, but even in tone. Everything is "Here is how superheroes are actually shlt, here is how fantasy would actually be shlt, here is how..." It gets old. There is no optimism in Western media anymore. I don't know if its because Hollywood is miserable, typically can't keep a marriage or a stable relationship with their parents or kids, or what, but Hollywood culture is what every other western medium seeks to emmulate and those people are just so damn miserable.
Contrast the boys with one punch man. Both are cynical parodies of the "superhero" archetype, but while the boys is all about how "Traditional heroism is ... Le bad!!!!" While Opm is a tongue in cheek and nuanced exploration of what it means to be a true hero, where the most powerful "heroes" are psychos but still end up doing a lot of good and the most heroic character is ironically just a dude with a bike who wants to save people.
Its because the social and family fabric of the west is broken, combined with post-modernism and its need to "deconstruct" everything without builing something better to replace it. We are watching a civilisation commit suicide in real time, as it throws away its culture, pride, hope, and more.
Too much of a generalization, though anime like this (shounen and such) is less commentary on anything and just propaganda meant to make you feel good and not much else beyond enjoy the story. Western media (esp. superhero movies) do something similar, the stagnation in storytelling is just much more obvious. Also important to note people in Japan are not watching this stuff on the same level as Americans are for example, to Western fans its the novelty of being able to watch something different. This stuff is practically marketed towards us, and Japanese audiences, as feel good escapism, which is also has become rather excessive in our current era even in our own media. There is anime that challenges this of course. Serial Experiments: Lain and Boogiepop are good examples of these types that are, while nihilistic per say, are tackling realistic issues in a dramatic light that are concerns within the growing consciousness in their time and era. Of course, in this time anime has become a bit more expansive, and you have to be in the know to find stuff like this nowadays, let alone have that stuff gain the attention of casual Westerners. Honestly, I'd like things to be shaken up a bit more so we can get more various types of stories that don't rely so much on moe, or is specifically meant to only market a fantasy, and that is at least changing little by little. Nor am I interested in the stories that confuse edgy for mature takes on concepts (Madoka Magica is a good example of this being actually balanced well). We need critical media, and we need to be made uncomfortable. But of course, there should be answer or at least a direction given at the end of the tunnel.
It's not just this show either. This has been subtly pushed in anime for the last couple years. Once you notice it, you'll start seeing it in a lot more places.
@@buddysweeny4193 so are we just going to rule out how it might just be because having children is among the most basic fundamental parts of being a human? and how a story about a family is just as natural as a love story?
I turned 23 yesterday, and found out that my wife is pregnant 3 days ago. Excited but scared to death. This video helped remind me of why I’m doing it.
Didn’t meet my wife till I was 32, had our first kid at 34, family is definitely an adventure worth taking. Especially when you wait to find a mature selfless person to share it with who’ll make you better for knowing them than you would be otherwise. Having kids is hard, but God says they’re a blessing, the good moments make the hard ones worth it.
This video feels deeply Confucian and I am here for it. “To put the world in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order.” Confucius
Great quote! Catholics like Pilgrims Pass and me agree wholeheartedly! "As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live." - St. John Paull II
One of the things that I really love about Spy Family is the cultural conservatism of the society. For example, the school Anya is attending is all about traditional values and high culture. I mean one of the interviewers for Anya's entrance, Walter Evans, is literally said to be conservative, and he is portrayed as kind and empathetic to the Forgers. How often are we presented with someone described as conservative in popular media and they turn out to be a nice and good person who help the protagonist? So overall, from the architecture, to the way people dress, to the values they encourage, I find the whole setting of SpyXFamily to be wholesome. It just amazes me that wishing for those kinds of settings are considered far-right today and it's ironic that the main bad guys in SpyXFamily are far-right because that shows what true far-right politics are. Wanting to go to war and cause death and pain.
You've already bought into the framing device. You're thinking like "far right equals bad" and then seeking out a showcase of the "real evil" rather than rejecting the framing from the get. Being "right" isn't a bad thing, and today, it's hardly a thing at all. The left-right dichotomy is more a tool of the elite to manipulate you than any real useful indicator of meaning.
@@heitorpedrodegodoi5646 The 1920s are to liberal for me tbh. If you are to put me into a time period, then I guess I’m more of a 1905-1914 kind of conservative.
It's 1960s so this was right as modernity (rather the funding for it) was cropping up around the west to Babylonia the place... But of course Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn had some CHOICE words to say about the "Jahvist media" and the things they push on us all for very degenerative reasons...
"Japan is obsessed with Germany" It also gives them the ability to critique fascism without self-flagellation, or critique the treatment of defeated fascists without being too self-pitying.
Yeah. There are alot in Japan who are also ashamed what their country had done during ww2 but cannot make direct references because of cultural expectations and the stigmatization around it. Some can get away with it like Studio Ghibli but most will be shamed and deeply ostracized which is why most the time the fascists are Germans.
@@toledochristianmatthew9919 Probably the best approach is the one GATE takes. Japanese soldiers make it clear that they are proud to approach war in the same more-humane way that the modern West does (at its best). That is, extending medical treatment even to enemies, not taking carnal advantage of defeated peoples, establishing bases simply to maintain their own defensive interests rather than conquest, modestly celebrating victories, etc. I don't think that any modern Japanese _need_ to be ashamed, exactly, of what their country did in the past; almost every person guilty of those crimes is dead, most of them at the time. The people of the past are not the people of the present. Generational change is possible, and it's what we've seen.
@@jimluebke3869 the problem though is that a lot of Japanese politicians and elders don't properly acknowledge their crimes with a lot of the worst getting away unpunished and the only reason they did not receive harsher punishments was because the West needed strong ally against the Soviets, Communist China, and North Korea. In a way Japan was extremely lucky that they surrendered to the Americans rather than suffer from the wrath of the Soviets and Chinese who would have acted much harsher.
It is a deconstruction and reconstruction of the colective needs of their people yes, that's the opposite of western comics that are trapped into people judgemental view of life. That episode when Twilight saves Anya on the castle is so damn touching, yeah I want a family.
I haven’t read the manga, but apparently the vast majority of that castle sequence is exclusive to the anime. My sister, who has read most of the manga that is currently out, says that is her favorite episode. It’s one of the most wholesome episodes in the series for sure (aside from Yor and Frankie having zero alcohol tolerance 😂). I love how this series doesn’t laser focus on the main plot and has tons of “filler” that just shows the characters being a family and all their crazy antics. So far, season 2 hasn’t really had any plot relevant stories (at the time of writing there are currently 4 episodes in S2, but I haven’t seen episode 4 yet) and just focuses on the characters for the most part. They’re even animating short stories from the manga as a bonus. Heck the movie that’s coming out in December is completely unrelated to the plot and will be a side adventure.
If we take the metaphor you've made with Spy x Family, then both Franky and Nightfall are examples of opposite ends of the spectrum for single men and women. Nightfall is so laser focused on the very top men that she refuses to acknowledge anyone who isn't as impressive as Twilight. She's incredibly spiteful to Yor for her perceived slights to her that she routinely comes up with elaborate plans in her head to tank Twilights fake marriage to fill the role of wife and mother in her stead. When we see Anya's perspective on this when she reads her mind, she'd end up being terrible at both because the only reason she'd even bother with being a wife OR a mother is for entirely selfish reasons. She's basically the hypergamous woman who refuses to settle for anything short of the top 10% of men and considers anything less than that as not worth her time all the while remaining lonely and bitter about it all. Franky by extension is a man always at the end of his rope, never getting any attention by any woman ever. He's routinely shown trying, and failing, to get a date or even any kind of positive feedback from women despite his various antics to do so. If anything he's overshadowed by Twilight in most aspects that he would never compare despite his own unique skills and toolsets not only supporting Twilights success but often being key to the operation. He is the everyday working man toiling at his craft, but receiving no appreciation for doing the dirty work that needs doing with none of the fanfare of say, a CEO or sports star. He and Nightfall would be fine with each other, but both are searching in the wrong area for companionship and thus come out of it alone and upset. Just a thought.
@elizabethbennett3930 great point too. Something that proves your point is that when either side blames all men or all women you can tell by their complaints that they're attacking the top tier of men and women and ignoring the rest as invisible. Which is why you have misandrists acusing all men of being oppressive masters of society ignoring how most homeless people are men and misogynists blaming all women as manipulative vipers lurking in the halls of high society ignoring common women working day to day who just want to form a human connection.
@elizabethbennett3930 From the anime you'd be mostly correct, but I was going primarily from the manga where both Franky and Yuri are given greater depth to both of their characters. For Franky, he's one of if not the best information broker, forger, and all-around informant WISE has and is perhaps one of their greatest local assets in Ostania. He's routinely shown to be amazing at his job, but his problem is that despite his actual ability he has 0 social skills in relation to women and absolutely flounders the moment he attempts to make a connection. It's such a recurring issue that it's little more then a joke in the series. IE Franky will unintentionally sabotage his own attempts at romance by being too desperate it repels women. Yuri is also shown to be scarily effective at his position in the SSS and is occasionally commented from some of the other women in the work to be quite handsome and charming when they talk to him. His strange obsession with his is off-putting but largely only known by a handful of people. By and large it really prevents him from even wanting to be in a relationship as it simply isn't that important to him. He feels a stronger responsibility and gratitude for his sister for being a mother figure when their parents died. The idea of being in a relationship simply isn't on his radar, if it's not work or Yor related, he just doesn't care. Neither of these men are "incels" but neither are they so immature as to be simply undeserving of love. I think the issue is that you're still coming at this with a feminine mindset. In a sense, you are dismissing both men for surface level readings and then proclaiming them to be unworthy because of it.
@elizabethbennett3930 I have to disagree. Men naturally have lower standards than women. The problem with incels is not that they only like attractive women (If you hang around average men, you'll realize attention from any woman is valuable to them). The reality is, low value men have always had no chance of getting a partner, no matter how low his standards. Then the problem with incels is that they're unable to increase their value. Sometimes it's their fault for being lazy, sometimes it's bad luck, and often times (in this era of showing off through social media) women have too high of standards.
Spy X Family is one of my favorite animes. I didn't realize just how tired I had grown of cynical, depressing, perverse and nihilistic storytelling until I watched the first episode of this. Almost everything about it is antithetical to the vast majority of media today, and I mean that in the best way possible. I just hope it can keep up the quality and momentum that it has and, hopefully, provide a satisfying ending.
I appreciate this, but I think the problem is actually education and work. I've seen polls that state that over half of Japanese want children, but the insane price and amount of schooling makes it extremely burdensome to actually have them. Combine this with the extremely unhealthy overwork culture and parents have far less time to be with any families they might have.
Dude there are literal interviews where there are wealthy and middle income japabese men and women who don't want to have children because they think they are costly. A lot of there responses are more cynical and selfish than actual economic hardships.
People thinking it costs to much to have a kid far outnumber the amount of people who actually can’t afford to have a kid. That itself is a part of a culture of materialism.
I JUST finished Spy x Family, even though the anime finished months ago, and just now you release a video about it. You are really becoming one of my favorite youtuber, touching deep and meaningful subjects through some of my favorite media products (Warhammer 40k, Avatar tlab, Dune, Lord of the rings, etc.). Great one as always, good job! P.S.: In the chinese censored version of the anime, they made the blood white. Therefore, Yor always came back of her "jobs" basically covered with jizz, so yeah, the idea of her being promiscuous or even a sex worker came to my mind.
Went in randomly and blind at episode 5, fell in love with the show that very arc. It fills a gap in people's lives that didn't know they needed it. I haven't seen a SoL anime do so well with parents or adults wanting to have kids.
I personally belived that the main reason why people don't want kids today is not because of money (well it is a big factor) but i think it's anxiety. The fact is that any of us who is middle class and see how everyone gets poorer around us then, we feel the need to study more to get a better position. Eventually we find ourselves almost in our mid-20s and must of our jobs where training unpaid ones, and we can't build the confidence to carry a real relationship much less a family. How we can become parents if we honestly haven't left a position of "child" long ago?
That and we are perfectionists; even if we don't realize this. Your grandfathers looked for someone with a cute haircut, this generation of men are looking for supermodels. Your grandmothers looked for a person who could afford a candy bar; this generation of women look for someone who can afford Ferrari's.
@@CantusTropus As I stated, the vast majority of people don't realize they are perfectionists. Media gave them unrealistic expectations of what lifestyle they could acquire and what kind of people they could attract as a partner. Its cheap to say, but the fact you don't feel that is true of yourself is exactly my point.
@@RealLifeIronManIf a supermodel is a woman with a bodycount less than 1, decently pretty, not covered in tats or piercings, and does not smoke, then yes, we are looking for unreasonable expectations.
What excellent timing. My brother and his wife just had their first baby, and I got to hold my niece for the first time a few days ago. It was a very humbling experience.
Nightfall is a great counter example contributing to the natalist theme of the series. She's hyper competent (read: superhuman killing machine) and the only man presented in the story thus far as worthy of her submission is Loid. Frankly, no one else could handle her. The tragedy of her character is her disorientation of purpose; she's a career woman sacrificing her love and youth to espionage, a necessarily thankless profession. This disorientation expresses itself in every aspect of her characterization: she thinks to treat Anya as a mission asset not a child, to act as her handler not her mother. Never admitting to her feelings, she instead waited for years(?) for the opportunity of her dream romance becoming mission critical and even still, misses her chance because she was on assignment. Even in her inner monologue she refers to the man she loves not by name, but codename; her career defines her reality and prevents her from working to actualize her heart's true desire. And all that sad subtext is presented in a hyper serious/goofball, support/rival character that is trying to play homewrecker, but I still can't help but root for her. Spy x Family really is something else.
Pilgrim, I feel very much for you regarding your breakup. I had to also recently break up with a woman I hoped to marry due to complications in the healthiness of that relationship that just weren't getting better. Then, if we can go through some hardship, and menage to overcome it stronger on the other side, we might be together for longer.. Then all of sudden, with my firm belief of climate change making our ordinery lives much worse, wouldn't it be selfish to have kids, knowing all I know about life.. Then again I know the highest of contentness and happiness when shared. My ultimate adventure would be raising a human, better then myself.. So, anime is more spiritual to it's themes than other shows. Maaaaaaaan you just open my eyes and said one think that i couldn't express with my mind but feel deeply in my soul. Thank you!
and how little ritual give value to othervise boring banal things. we as a society lost it with potmodern deconstruction. but spirit, the soul is what making us human - not just numbers and calculations.
"its not about living your best best life, it's about being the best in your life." That is a very good quote to express a sentiment that is often lost on our generation.
Have you ever heard of a family sitcom. Japan did not invent stories with happy famillies. America spent decades making nothing but these shows. But when the Japanese do it suddenly becomes propaganda.
Hello fellow Catholic! I think the best answer I can say about getting married and starting a family is that you are never ready for either one but you should take the plunge regardless. This is the approach I went for and now I’m married with a third child on the way. God bless!
Thank you for making this video Pilgrim. I too had to break up with the love of my life only two months ago. She had many issues that ultimately led her to do the worst thing someone can do to their partner. Getting back into the dating scene will be a challenge but not impossible. I have already found small communities around my town where hopefully I could meet another woman.
I think the main reason people are not having kids in the societies mentioned is because of "personal freedom" and they say it is money because they don't want to have to change their lifestyle to accommodate a child. I tell people all the time that poorer people than you started families and had great lives. It's the same thing with people especially in the USA(where I live) thinking they need to have a room for each kid when probably only two generations ago lots of kids would share the same room. People are buying bigger houses then ever and having less kids then ever. The money reason is generally a cope here because people have higher expectations of what normal is. I will say state media is saying all these things because they want to have an excuse to import people from everywhere to take care of the problem that way, instead of making policy that encourages having kids.
Careers mainly, women pursue so many things they cannot really commit to one or rather sacrifice family, plus the propaganda about global warming, about overpopulation, cost of living affordable living, social media, sacrifice etc, you can see the interviews, and the statistics, men want a family, most of us want one but female education not only diminishes the birth rate but absolutely kills wages, things like arranged marries are a lot better than the current situation men embrace, also in order to balance that deals are made for example in Japan and muslim regular marriages women handle the money affecting independance and investments, the welfare state over women mostly (that is not on the video) is destroying any benefit they can get from marriages, it does not matter how hot Yor is, or how adorable Anya is, how cool the dog is, it does not work, the birthrate will keep going down, unless the welfare and female empowerment goes away for good, and men need to learn that lesson.
I agree with all of you, there is a lot more, but when I am talking to someone in my everyday life the number one reason they state is money, but they will have really expensive hobbies or really nice stuff, and they want to keep those and think having kids removes all of it. Another thing that happens is kids are always talked about as a burden in 90% of conversations I hear, and everytime someone says negative stuff about it I tell them that I am excited to have kids and don't care that it is hard or takes away some of the free time I have which usually is wasted time anyway lol If we want to talk about the propaganda pushes it is insane how much shit there is about these other things.
@@Captaincapafew14 It was also in the 90's and beyond, media really tried to push the idea that kids where a burden and would ruin your dreams. This was because many in the media industry were concerned about overpopulation. Nothing was conspired or anything; just media is downstream of its creators' ideologies.
It would be nice to see something that lionizes parenthood. I’ll have to check it out. I hope you get to have a family. It’s my favorite shit. Seeing my kids go from a screaming bag of flour into rational humans is amazing. It’s what keeps me going even though it’s expensive and tough to maintain.

It's funny how any media or artworks that tell messages like this of a normal family and a decent society in the midst of world troubles are thought of as weird nowadays without a dash of crazy propaganda... this is what a family is supposed to be (the values and the love✨️). If you can qualify for a healthcare saving program, do that so that you don't have to pay taxes on that money. 4) An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care. Give your child healthy food, regular checkups, minimal sugar, and be militant about twice a day tooth care. You won't end up needing the amount of medical intervention you think if you take care of yourselves properly. 5) In the case of medical procedures or medication, look into medical tourism. Plan your holiday around getting good care cheaper elsewhere so long as it is safe. 6) Medical debt is not the same as other forms of debt in America. People can still thrive while having medical debt, so do not let fear rule your life. No one will judge you for medical debt, and you have much stronger legal rights regarding it than other forms of debt. 7) Be adaptable. The boomers lied about how we should follow our dreams and we can be whatever we want. You need to look at where you live and what career skills you invest into like it's specking outva character in a game. Have a strategy. Have a backup. Ignore ideology and live in reality. There's a lot of good paying work out there, and there's a lot of affordable places to live. Find the happy compromize. 8) Homeschool and homeschool co-ops. The resources available online are such that the education you and other parents in the comunity can provide your children exceeds the nonsense the under paid bitter union workers will ever provide your kids. The school system does not care about your kids. Invest some money in a fund for their future benefit, but do not trouble yourself about sending them to college. If they do not qualify for scholorships, then there was likely no point in them bothering with the more expensive schools in the first place. There are so many other options. Nurture whatever they excell at and help them fund that venture when the time comes. College is over rated.
There are certainly difficulties, (I'm right there with you, familyless) chief among them finding someone to start a family with, but the bulk of your perceived reality is programming.
Man, a great work with this video! The analysis, ideas and connection you made and expanded in the monologue, it was a joy to observe. I understood better why this anime seemed interesting to me. I think discussion with you would be very though provoking, lots of relatable points. Keep up this inspiring work!
I guess the best way to summarize the difference between you and other videoessay writers is that you make very similar analyses of cultural artefacts, but you actually have values and, even if inherently limited, have some comprehension of Truth that many today seem to lack. Believe me, this makes a world of difference, and I always come away from your content with a wholesome feeling in my soul. Thank you for all the hard work.
one of the reasons people aren't getting married and having kids that I don't often see mentioned is perfectionism. We have more access to more information than ever before and it skews the vision people have of what is normal to an unhealthy degree. People think they need to have a perfect relationship with a 10/10, upper middle class lifestyle, etc. They should be perfect parents who are always engaged and give the child the right amount of encouragement, discipline, and independence at all times. With those unrealistic ideas of what a family is supposed to be like, is it any wonder people avoid it and make excuses why it "just doesn't work for them"? It goes back to your initial assertion that the real war of entering a relationship isn't the partner, it's laying down your own arms and being willing to be vulnerable, willing to make mistakes, willing to overcome your own pride. I think many nowadays lack the training, and the courage, to do so (perhaps another reason divorce is so common?)
that's why I like how in Spy x Family Loid doesn't always understand Anya. He pushes her too hard, he messes up. Yor constantly almost kills them with her cooking. They aren't perfect but that's what makes it so so much better
That bit about cultural collapse and the way men and women are so at odds with one another these days really hit hard. The fact that the few options for meeting the opposite sex includes dating apps of all bloody things is just depressing.
My problem with this kind of discourse isn't the argument itself, but the pretense of it: Japanese doesn't have children for Japan, but it's more like they have children for the family or the village. If you don't have a family or a local community, Japan will become a faraway dream, dreamt by powerful people who can manipulate Japan as a whole. Because, tbh, no one is gonna sacrifice their styles of life for their nation, that's is, without nationalism.
So you can't save the world. There really isn't a sense of global community on Earth. Or, there was, but they're not popular. Like Communists. Or NeoLiberalists.
"Marriage can be a supernatural experience, if you're lucky..." Tell me you're a furry longing for a werewolf waifu without telling me you're a furry longing for a werewolf waifu...
I love you man, you put my opinions on the topic in more suitable words than I'd ever could. I am devastated how people think about having a family and marriage these days, finally someone speaks with reason about it. The sole purpose of marriage is to have kids, countless times I had to restrain myself from criticizing other people about their childless "marriages". I didn't have great parents myself and that's actually my dream to be better at this than them, but it is so hard for me to find a suitable woman, because of my social anxiety, I grew up with. But yes, the modern times suck. All the media, all this anti-natalist narrative, the sexual revolution etc... Deciding to start a family is indeed a heroic act, waging war against the world itself.
Not bad, considering how the mangaka himself downplays the value he puts on his own work... Tatsuya Endo has said in an interview that he created 'Spy x Family' specifically to pander to audience preferences, and considers the stories he writes for it as relatively shallower than what he's used to writing. He considers writing Spy x Family a break from his normal written output (which, apparently, is far darker and heavier-themed).
Indeed, depending on how the stuff regarding AI is decided it will either: 1- Make people finally start to rethink what truly means to be human and reconnect with the stuff that internet twisted 2- People will go even further in losing their sense of humanity untill we're possibly replaced by the AI The scenario 2 is more likely unfortunately.
@nonewingedren4303 well we won't get replaced by ai until we create artificial general intelligence. And even then humans would still do physical labor until we can build robots to do that for us. So it will still be a while until we replace ourselves.
Loved the video, I wondered if you would someday make a video on Berserk? The Golden Age arc seemed really interesting to me, with the last chapters being like a logical conclusion of the lust for power with Griffith being this Alexander the Great-like figure. The later chapters then seemed to devolve into this not well thought out criticism of Christianity and the catholic church specifically (also going with the communist narrative that the reformation was really about social change and not religion) that i think took some inspiration from Nietzsche and his idea of Christianity as the religion of the weak, as opposed to the self sufficient pagan barbarian (the thing is called Berserk so I think I got that right). The neopagan themes are pretty much spelled out and also very stupid. Just wondered what you might say about it.
I asked him about Berserk once. He said that he has a friend who uses Berserk’s artwork for inspiration. But he’s hesitant to get into it himself because, at the time, Miura wouldn’t be around to finish it. The Pilgrim is very critical of endings. Not sure how he feels about it now that Mori is running things.
Hi Pilgrim, I don't know if you are going to see this, but it was really interesting how out of seemingly nowhere you bring up the hedgehog's dilemma, because I have gone through this exact situation with a friend of mine (she's a girl, I'm a boy, we're both in high school), we both became very distant and only in this last week I've come to understand why we became distant, and only today we have come back to talking. I mention this because she is the first person who i've had any idea of wanting to have a family with, she is really virtous (we are both catholic, and brazilian too, i'm writing this english so others can read it, kk), and really lovely all around (at least to me). She wants to be a nun though, so i'm kinda of in a weird place now ain't i ? Its weird to have these thoughts, and even weirder to write about them, i don't even know why i'm writing this anyways, i don't have much of a point to make here. So, just so this comment isn't entirely meaningless, don't give up on someone just because you've hurt eachother, if a break up happens (be it between friends, family or romantic partners) and you still feel for each other, it might just be because you both cared about eachother. And to the mgtows, don't be bitter, if you want to live your life without a partner, thats fine, just don't go around bossing others about what you think is correct for them.
Isn't she able to settle down and have a family then become a nun later on in life wen the kids grow up? I've heard allot of nuns usually have families before hand then converted later on after the nest was empty, altho I think they might have been widowed as well before hand to, but still?
@@ElishaFollet I don't know man,all I know is that if even want to think of that, both her and I need to repair our relationship first. But thank you for the encouragment.
I very much agree with this video because over the years in my life, I have understood that there is merit in wanting to start a family and educate your children. In fact, I have understood that starting a large family, is my mission should I choose to acept it.
I am so sorry to hear about your breakup, Pilgrim. I am 32 years old and I can relate. It is so difficult to find a good woman these days - one who wants good things, a good family, with good values... Feminism and gender theory/queer theory has been an absolute nuclear bomb to the already stressed healthy romantic/sexual norms for us humans, and it sometimes feels impossible to find women unpoisoned by its radiation. It's very close to being "so over," for all of us.
@elizabethbennett3930this is a pretty good analysis and also I would like to point out that a woman who wants a man as her equal is a feminist, because feminism is about equality between the genders not whatever those radicalized weirdos you see online are, so it's ok to be a feminist.
@elizabethbennett3930So basically the women aren't willing to put in any work in developing the guys but just want a fully formed product? Lol! This is why I hate tradthots. I would rather date a political liberal woman because at least they aren't hypocritical
@@ElishaFollet feminism has been like meth on society, it gave us a high at first but in the end it was actually a poision that has destroyed our lives. It broke the social contract and ruined what held society together. It was never about equality, but power and advocasy to give women everything they want. All without criticism or responsibility for it. It was always bad on the inside. The first wave were known for firebombing stores who held to tradition, now the 3rd/4th wave is using Relational Warfare (in the form of Gossiping Shaming and Rallying, GSR) on anyone they don't like or anyone that hurts their feelings.
Damn... what an amazing video and very insightful observations. As a 21 year in the west, it has been hard to find a spouse. I've always wanted to be a father and a provider, but I can't find a woman who doesn't put herself first. I broke up with my ex after 2 years of dating, because it became evident that she wanted to focus on herself and pursue a career in nursing, rather than to have a future with me. I pray for society, I want to see it get better, but we are headed towards interesting times.
I'm 23, and I think it's time that I seriously look for a romantic partner, but I totally get what you're talking about. I'm honestly really selective about this, and I really want to marry a girl who's my type. Sometimes I wonder if I'm being superficial even though I get the importance of the qualities that are on the inside, but I just can't help myself. Despite all that, when I meet her, I want her to believe that she's the most beloved and beautiful woman in the world, and I'm happy to do my part in fighting this toxic cultural attitude towards families and raising children. All the same, I hope the Second Coming happens soon because I think that otherwise we might be completely screwed.
I've heard that it helps to look for someone who shares pretty similar believes and values and can be a good friend to and that love usually happens when u least expect it sometimes.
@@ElishaFollet Yes, I agree with the whole values thing, and I absolutely intend to go with that, but I have a type in terms of physical appearance. That's what I was referring to. See, I'm really most attracted to beautiful girls with dark hair cut short and bright blue eyes. The problem is that that combo is quite rare, and I have a tough time finding women attractive when they don't fit that description. See the problem then? It means that I'm highly selective-which, to be fair, will be a great thing after I'm married-but right now, it's an absolute curse! Sure, I know that you shouldn't care about outward appearances, but that's just the way humans are and there's no point in denying it. If you're a fan of Pilgrim, then you're probably aware of that. Beauty matters to us. It shouldn't-but it does.
I love how Japan has for the most part avoided the unlimited immigration trap, so promoted and defended by the west, the idea that immigrants will work to support the welfare system. Instead most new arrivals to places like the UK, EU, Canada and the Scandinavian countries have become a burden to the welfare system, unable to find employment because it's incompatible with their belief system, because for them working with women is unacceptable or working with gay people is immoral, or learning the local language is literally too much to ask. If an immigrant gets a job is to send some money back to his country, to his family back home, not to make sure the aging local population gets some welfare benefits or long time medical care. Or he prefers to join a gang and rob and extort the local population, safe because activists and politicians have make sure to paint any interaction between police and immigrants as bigotry or racism. Japan prefers to witters its way out of existence to deal with the problems the west is experiencing today.
I think I read somewhere they are just starting to employ ""foreign workers"" (from a world below the 2nd) en masse recently.... It's a shame, but Americanda's fate is desired for Nippon as well, they have been screwing Germania and Europe the same way since at least 2014. It's gonna get rough for Japan, they are gonna get Weimar'd even HARDER, and it has been ill for them since the 90s. Thank the US fiat dollar for that, forced on Japan and most of the world since America's owners won WWII.
I kept thinking of the Mormons in my community as I contemplated this video. Far be it from me, an agnostic pupil of Evola, to affirm or reject the claims of heresy leveled at them by the Orthodox, Catholics, and Protestants, but they're obsessed with creating stable, loving, and religious families and I kind of envy them. Were it not for my paranoia and fear of being exploited, I'd consider converting (though, I'm interested in the Russian Orthodox as well). Anyway, they're super family-oriented and I think that's cool and wanted to leave a comment so the algorithm'd promote your video. Keep up the good work!
In regard to the aging problem, I never understand those that believe medical immortally is right around the corner and at least on RUclips those people are also the same whom believe FTL will never be invented. I wonder what the difference between me and those people are, as I think the exact opposite, IE medical immortally will never happen but FTL is only a matter of time.
I believe both will come eventually, but when comes to immortality depends on the definition. If you define immortality in the normal definition, the idea of living forever, then that idea is complete fantasy. But if you defined as the idea of living an undetermined amount of time and you accept the idea of dying in an unknown way (except for old age, of course), then that idea is plausible.
@@Johnny-ww7ichow naive of you to expect it will be available for plebs. 😂😂😂 I could imagine it will be like rent, you will be injected with miracle juice in a regular schedule.
Medical immortality would be a disaster as it likely wouldn't extend working years. It would likely only mean more people needing to be supported by the working young. If your grandma could be kept alive on a ventilator from 80 yrs to 200 yrs, how would society support / pay for her? Would you be willing to accept a much lower standard of living when you are young?
I personally think that someday we will invent both of these things but medical immortality will have to be heavily restricted or outlawed after a certain age (maybe like 150 years) to allow for innovation and prevent stagnation. Imagine if people living today were the last generation to exist on this planet, that would be horrible.
This video has inspired me to try to go on dating. I always wanted a family but was too insecure to try. This made me realize there will be perfect time and just have to try.

You made this video just in time for my friend. Now I could get him to sit down and actually comprehend your great video. The anime of SpyxFamily is too complicated for him.
Wealthy countries stop having kids BECAUSE of the high standard of living. The higher the standard of living, the higher the cost it is to maintain. Not just with money, but more importantly, time. The more time you have available, the more likely you are to have children. Poor countries have high unemployment rates and have lower standards of living, lower maintenance costs, and thus more time for family. Add in things like cultural standards and whether a society is religious or not to the mix, and you can take an educated guess about where your birthrate is going. Consider also that having children is just as much an economic decision as it is about the preservation of the species or whatever. In the West, child labor laws and compulsory education increase the amount of time and resources parents have to invest to see a return on that investment. So, instead of having the large families like our ancestors did, we funnel more resources into fewer children to hopefully maximize your return from more educated and well-adjusted children when they are adults. Contrast this with poor countries with laxed or non existent child labor laws or compulsory education kids can start working really young. This creates an economic incentive for parents to have more children so they can put them to work. As cruel as that sounds, that is part of the reasoning our ancestors had a lot of children.
i always say people in the prehistoric age had children and died at 30. people during the black death had kids and they lost almost everyone they loved. people during the industrial revolution had kids and their kids died at 4. people during the great depression had kids and they were homeless. you have healthcare, sanitation, cheap food and won't have to go to war, so what's stopping you? it rarely changes their mind. mostly it's a matter of "i'm too lazy to improve myself and want to do things that bring me short term pleasure, forever." it's depressing. me and my fiancé are planning to have children, her brother is set on not having them. it's a shame, because the guy happens to be really good with kids. here's what i tell people who are afraid they will be bad parents: your parent weren't good. that's ok. you understand their mistakes, you don't have to be a perfect parents, you need only to be better than they were. maybe you won't be the best parent, maybe your kids will hate you, but you'll have been better, an impovement in your bloodline. if your parents raped, beat and yelled at you, then even if you beat and yell at your kids, you'll have been better. your kids might hate you, and if they have kids they'll only yell at their kids, and their kids won't even yell, they'll be patient with their kids and voilà, the trauma has healed. it doesn't have to be solved in 1 generation, but if you refuse to make more generations the trauma has won. its like cutting off your arm because your finger is broken. you don't give it the chance to heal and that's a shame.
The one thing SpyXFamily I find unfortunate about SpyXFamily is that it focuses too much on the nuclear family. It's very much mom, dad and child focused. To me, I think it would have been better if they also included grandparents in the show. As Pilgrim says, the show talks about navigating the delicate relationships that comes with getting married to another. It would have given so many opportunities if grandparents were also involved. Yor having to get along with Loid's mother, Loid having to get Yor's father's approval, not just her brother. They could also have made the grandparents interesting by also giving them secret jobs, that Loid and Yor were unaware of that also could fit into the Spy-theme of the show. I do understand some reasons for why they have excluded grandparents. Loid's motivation for being a Spy is tied to him being orphaned, Yor's lack of cooking and strong bond with her brother is tied to them growing up without parents. It also serves the function of telling people who live now that even if you don't have parents you can be close to, you can make a positive impact by starting a family from scratch. Still, I believe if the show had included grandparents, it would have been even better
@@AnimeArchaeologist Yes but that's the point which I dislike. You could have had many interesting possibilities with including grandparents, but the show wanted to focus on the nuclear family instead. I mean, it's good to focus on the family, but it's a missed oppurtunity to not also include granparents. So many possible interesting scenarios and it would teach the importance of grandparents being involved in your children's lives.

I love the double meaning behind the name "Forger".
There's the obvious pun that they're fake. A "forgery". But to forge also means to strengthen and mold, like steel. This family started out as a "forgery" but over time, the relationships are forged into unbreakable bonds.
Forge on ahead.
That's beautiful
I have so many memories of media depicting family life as utterly unrewarding and miserable when I was a kid. You can't convince me that didn’t affect my generation in a bad way, whether it was intentionally or not.
The barbie movie has toddlers smashing baby dolls because they were bored of playing mama. ..

I think what it is about anime that Westerners find so appealing is that, unlike our media, anime is nearly always optimistic. Even its shlock is optimistic. In Western media, everything is deconstruction, everything is made ugly, and I don't mean just aesthetically, but even in tone. Everything is "Here is how superheroes are actually shlt, here is how fantasy would actually be shlt, here is how..."
It gets old.

Loved how brought up how spy family was possible Japanese propaganda to have kids. My friends called me crazy when I said that.
It's not just this show either. This has been subtly pushed in anime for the last couple years. Once you notice it, you'll start seeing it in a lot more places.
Yeah, I've noticed. "I can't understand what my husband is saying!" felt a bit like that too. Not that I'm complaining, I support the message.

Didn’t meet my wife till I was 32, had our first kid at 34, family is definitely an adventure worth taking.
I think because he inst the type of conservative who wants to go back to 1920s

It also gives them the ability to critique fascism without self-flagellation, or critique the treatment of defeated fascists without being too self-pitying.

Well put
good point, hadn't realized this.
Sometimes it's their fault for being lazy, sometimes it's bad luck, and often times (in this era of showing off through social media) women have too high of standards.
people who have families actually make more money because they are more motivated to give their families a better life
Spy X Family is one of my favorite animes.
Combine this with the extremely unhealthy overwork culture and parents have far less time to be with any families they might have.
shhh, dont ruin his culture war power fantasy

P.S.: In the chinese censored version of the anime, they made the blood white. Therefore, Yor always came back of her "jobs" basically covered with jizz, so yeah, the idea of her being promiscuous or even a sex worker came to my mind.
Sounds like that backfired pretty hard. 🤣
Actually I've heard that was just a fake image made by a troll online sadly, tho if it were real that would have been funny
Ill tell you the real reason, men are afraid of the end of marriage by the wamen. Wamen wont settle untill theyre 30 and had a 100 partners.
@@RealLifeIronManAre we? I don't feel like that. That's a pretty broad claim.
@@CantusTropus As I stated, the vast majority of people don't realize they are perfectionists.
I remember that there's a pairing involving her and Yuri of all people.

You are on the right track.
Its is personal freedom, of wamen.
Another thing that happens is kids are always talked about as a burden in 90% of conversations I hear, and everytime someone says negative stuff about it I tell them that I am excited to have kids and don't care that it is hard or takes away some of the free time I have which usually is wasted time anyway lol
If we want to talk about the propaganda pushes it is insane how much shit there is about these other things.
@@Captaincapafew14 It was also in the 90's and beyond, media really tried to push the idea that kids where a burden and would ruin your dreams.

There are a few things I have learned at this point in my life, please heed this hard won widom braught by the failures of myself and others that you might find a way forward... (some may only apply for Anericans. I am an American.)
1) mutually fair and beneficial prenup designed such that if things do on work out, you can detangle your lives with minimal legal assistance.
2) Do not wait until you are in your 30s or later as this greatly increases the complications of conceiving and carying to term, and also increases the likelyhood of birth defects.
3) Do not bother with health insurance. It is a scam. Look into how much it would cost to insure yourselves and instead of paying that to an insurance company, put that away in a savings account specifically for medical costs only.
Can't wait for the family REVOLUTION!!!😂😂😂

one of the reasons people aren't getting married and having kids that I don't often see mentioned is perfectionism.
Freedom is power over self.
Seems not many can handle it responsibly.
Power shows someone's true colors.
Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Spy X Family is Endo's Piano Man. It isn't really his favorite work, but it's his most popular.
Ai will force us to rethink society whether we want to or not
True
Indeed, depending on how the stuff regarding AI is decided it will either:
1- Make people finally start to rethink what truly means to be human and reconnect with the stuff that internet twisted
2- People will go even further in losing their sense of humanity untill we're possibly replaced by the AI
The scenario 2 is more likely unfortunately.
@nonewingedren4303 well we won't get replaced by ai until we create artificial general intelligence. And even then humans would still do physical labor until we can build robots to do that for us. So it will still be a while until we replace ourselves.
This video does an excellent job as showing the value of families.
Loved the video,
I wondered if you would someday make a video on Berserk?
Have to say, your videos actually make me want to be a better man. Thanks.

Such a great analysis of family through Spy x Family
Makes me laugh when *guns* the great equalizer exists. 🤔 So guns are lowkey feminist? 😆
Damn... what an amazing video and very insightful observations.
Truly interesting...
Once guns are treated like the great equalizers they are by women. I wonder what will transpire?
🍿😋
@@ElishaFollet
Yes, I agree with the whole values thing, and I absolutely intend to go with that, but I have a type in terms of physical appearance.

Literally a matter of time cause it breaks tim am I right? I'm
hilarious.
@@Johnny-ww7ichow naive of you to expect it will be available for plebs. 😂😂😂
I could imagine it will be like rent, you will be injected with miracle juice in a regular schedule.

Ah shit... Not this corner of RUclips again... Back, back.
This made me chuckle. What else is in "this corner" of RUclips?
Legend Of The Galactic Heroes spotted, video liked.
I honestly just watch shows at face value. This was enjoyable.
Sadly, Loid had forgotten his side of the family as it's implied at the first episode.
@@AnimeArchaeologist
Yes but that's the point which I dislike.
@@ANorwegianPenguin You mention grandparents, and the closest that Anya gets to grandparents would be Yor's dead parents.
