Tone sounds great, nice work too. Such a fun song to play that I recently rediscovered upon taking bass back up after like 15 years break lol. I'm surprised how fast the muscle memory somehow came back, and I can already play it better than I did when I was a teenager despite only playing now for 1 month. EDIT: I'll also add that I'm only playing it on a 4-string but most of the song doesn't need the lower string, you can just play the higher octave too.
Great job! Easily the best cover of the song I've seen on RUclips. You have the chops and especially the feel for the song. I've been learning this one myself for a while and when checking various covers of Erotomania people tend to mostly play along the first Guitar Pro tab they get their hands on.
Hi, thanks! I'm happy that you like it. Like mentioned in the description, I've based my cover on the Jammit (the service doesn't exist any more) version, which used the original separated tracks, so I could get every detail out of Myung's performance. 😉
Do you have any other recommendations of this type of song that's fun to play on bass but not totally insane? I love playing this song due to the manageable but still quick pace, especially on the left hand. One of those "makes you feel like you know what you're doing" songs lol
First off, this is not actually a walkthrough, this is just a playthrough with tabs. A walkthrough means to take things slow and explain everything along the way. #1) You have written "slide out" from the 3rd fret in the first riff, but you don't actually play the slide there - you only play it on the 5th. #2) You have written "vibrato" on the 8th fret if the second riff, but there is no vibrato there - only the guitar plays it like that. #3) The fingering is wrong in the second half of the second riff. The bass uses the same fingering as the guitar there, which is to play "frets 3 5 7" on the D-string + "fret 5" on the A-string and then same thing with the next phrase: "frets 1 3 5" on the D-string" + "fret 3" on the A-string. #4) You have written a "slide" in Fig.10, but the bass actually just holds that low F (you might be confusing the sounds between the bass and the distorted organ or guitar). #5) The first "fret 1" in Fig.14 is actually played on "fret 6" of the E string. #6) All the notes in Fig.15 are actually played on the E string, except for the C# on "fret 4" of the A-string (and there is no slide there, only the guitar does that). #7) Fig.17 is correct up until the notes on the G string, where you have extra rhythms added in that aren't actually played by the bass. It's all single long notes, not "long + short" (could be that you're being confused by the kick drum in that part). #8) There are a few wrongly transcribed/played rhythms in the section between Fig.21 and Fig.25. Listen to the isolated bass track (it's available on RUclips) to hear what's actually being played. #9) The fingering in Fig.22 and Fig.24 are wrong regarding the "fret 10" on the D-string, it's actually played on "fret 5" of the G-string. #10) The entirety of Fig.28 and the first half of Fig.29 are written in the wrong position, everything should be moved one string lower (the notes themselves are correct, but not which string they're played on) in a higher position. #11) The "fret 1" on the A-string in Fig.33 is actually played on "fret 6" of the E-string. #12) The "slide into fret 5" in Fig.34 is wrong. There is no slide on the 5th fret at all, it's actually a "slide up from fret 1" on the F on the E-string right before the "fret 5" of the D-string. #13) The bass doesn't keep pumping 16th notes at the end of Fig.39, it's just a long low C followed by two slow 8th notes + a slow dotted 4th note before Fig.40 starts. #14) In Fig.40, the bass actually plays uninterupted 16th note triplets all the way up to "fret 12" on the G-string, no shorter notes in between there. #15) There's a lot wrong with Fig.41 - part of that can be explained by the use of a 5-string instead of a 6-string, but there are also some wrong fingerings and rhythms. #16) The last chord isn't actually played with all three notes at once, it's just "fret 19" on the D-string (actually it's all played on the C-, G- and D-strings, but that's the 5-string vs. 6-string thing again) that keeps ringing together with the previous notes.
Wow man get a life... 😉 You've just spent like a whole day analyzing a video, which I've made some 8 years ago (the tab was added approx. 4 years ago). At the time it was maybe 8th month since I've even started playing the bass... At the time it was also one of the few videos on RUclips featuring this track. The way I play it, is based on the original transcriptions of the studio track, mixed with live performaces of John. He himself literally plays it different way on every live DVD. And I'm quite confident he never ever played it live the same as in the studio... Sooooo... if it goes for some small articulation/rythm inconsistencies with the studio original, than yes, you've pinpointed them well. I was also not technically ready at the time for the final closing lick... But man! Since when there is even such a thing like right or wrong fretboard position!!!??? A proficient musician can change them as he fits and likes and it's also depending on how the instrument sounds and holds the tuning in different positions! There is no such thing as wrong fretboard position!!! Just like on what base did you even came to that kind of conclusions? Music is not a mathematical equation, but way of emotional expression. One can interpret it the way he feels it, as long as the artistical and musical foundation are kept... No hard feelings, please! Thank you for your deep dive into my 8 year old video, I would never think that someone will be still listening to it after such a long time... I also stay forward seeing your perfect playtrough of this track on YT! I promise to check every detail of it 😉
@@smiechu What I base my statements on? That I've been transcribing music professionally for 20+ years and playing the instrument for 30+ years. I also have a double master's degree in music education and work part-time as a bass (and guitar) teacher. As for there not being any "correct" fingerings/positions, that depends on context. If we are simply talking about music in terms of notes, then sure - you're correct that it doesn't matter. However, when it comes to transcribing from a specific source (in this case, it's the studio recorded version of Erotomania from the Awake album) then it DOES matter, because a note won't sound the same if played on a different string. Yes, it's true that Myung switches around the fingerings live too, but that does come with a change in sound which is a deliberate choice by him in that moment. But as said, when transcribing from a specific source, we do not have that freedom - how it was played is how it shall be transcribed. ESPECIALLY if you're calling it a "walkthrough" - then it REALLY has to be on point! If you are in doubt about my transcription and/or playing skills, you're more than welcome to check out my channel - I have transcriptions/playthroughs there, both for bass and guitar.

Stream of Conciousness from DT is also quite nice. Unfortunately not in my YT portfolio. Maybe I'll do a walkthrough video in near future.
It's playable on a 4-string, but the low notes add far more depth. Great playing.
Jestem przyjemnie zaskoczony brzmieniem tego basu. Jak na swoją niską cenę jest znakomicie. Nagrywane przez jakiś konkretny preamp?

Hi! There is no amp, the tone comes directly from SansAmp Bass Driver DI pedal. Settings can be seen on the beginning of the video.
