After watching, i think the problem the couple faced is more due to bad planning and the insistence of getting a flat in good matured locations. It has nothing much to do with competition from Singles as they are restricted to 2rm n non-matured. There are also priority given to family, so it is also a matter of luck. From the gov, the majority of families can get their BTO if they are not picky on the locations.

      10:18 Very entitled couple.
Singles can only apply at 35 and restricted to 2 room BTO in a non-mature estate, paying extra $15,000, no stay near parents grant. And you think your 6 applications are a big deal? Ratio for singles to 1 unit is 15.6:1, compared to couples is 1.5:1. Couples are given more priority with a lot more supply, singles applied 9-11 times that took up 4 years just for applications and 5 years to build, move in at age 44. You have no restrictions but yet you choose to be picky in terms of location, instead of a house for kids. Don’t make yourself even more privileged by denying others, singles pay taxes too.

The couple is just picky, just like anyone. Doesn't singles deserve a space (or home ) to call their own too? Ridiculous to think that Singles are like second class citizens. The whole point of "taking care" of married couples only just show how myopic the govt is. Pushing people to the brink of high real estate rental cost, especially for singles (not just couple or foreigners) will then make them unable to afford better healthcare for themselves especially with single income. To increase population with such policy is basically playing with fire. Exactly like one of the ministers comment "you need a very small space to have sex". Instead of trying to solve problems and understand the situation, they are sitting on their high horses and are totally either oblivious or have no solution. So why are they still making our poliicies?

You can type this because you have a very one dimensional view of policy making. in short, you are a simpleton. For instance, increasing the population can increase the economic output and collect more rents .at the same time, increasing the population can also cause housing competition problem , just like you mentioned. Either ways , is that a policy will have good and bad consequences and the policy maker will have to balance between the two.
You can question the policymakers efficacy all you want , but at the end of the day , what is your remedy?Sitting here and critising and yet offering no solution is like a keyboard rat warrior. Yes , you are one of them

Only agree with your first sentence. The other points, you just sound like a taxi uncle, complaining for the sake of complaining, with reasons that doesn't hold water. If giving priority to married couples doesn't increase the chance of newborns, giving priority to singles will??
And with your own logic, if couples aren't given priority and must go for more expensive options, wouldn't they also have less for healthcare? You know how much money is needed for the children's healthcare?
You want the bonus? Get married. It's a bonus, not an entitlement. Your entitlement is to go for resale or private.

Well. Above 35, u have a 7k cap. Can we have a survey... for couples that have gotten bto, at 35, are they still making less than 7k ceiling? 1. Singles over 35 making above 7k, is not able to bto. 2. Even if they can bto, they r only restricted to 2 room. 3. In other words, they are forced into resale market, which bto buyers have bot and are selling to make a capital gain, which is then, passed on to resale flat buyer.
    Really, it seems really unfair.
It seems like single, above 35, making more than 7k, is forced to buy a 3room resale flat...which can range from 350k to 650k, one person shouldering this amount (depends how old the flats are).
This 7k ceiling should be removed. And not just 35. Imagine u r 40, trying to buy a hdb, chances of u making less than 7k? And the hdb loan are only eligible to below 7k salary too.
And all the subsidies...e.g. living near ur parents...also does not apply.
I'm proud to be a Singaporean but when it comes to this, I feel less of a citizen. Its like I am forced to pay for the premium in resale flat, for bto folks (that have benefited from the gain). Choose to be single -> u mean u would rather couples just settle down for the sake of it for the house and divorce later? I think fairness of the policy needs to be review.

I don't know who you are
I don't know where you are
But I want you to know that you are God damn right~
Thank you for voicing out here, I really agreed to what you said as I am in such plight right now.
2 more years to 35, for single ,there's additional $15k impose, yes due to sole ownership but hello...it's only 2rm BTO...ok anyway, then my future spouse is a foreigner but we don't plan to have kid(s) first (because of money$) then PR is not immediate even application. Ok, putting these aside. Then~ let's say applying at 35 and took them to complete building ,ideally maybe 4 years,by then I'm 39 then reno cost is another new price tag,ok reno loan fine. But this 4 years, maybe we want to have kid...then I would it's still manageable because its still baby AND not forgetting kid(s) grow up fast...then adding 5 years MOP...wow...9 years then can sell but almost no way to profit or even buy a resale or back to a 4rm BTO since our kid is SC by then...so another 4,5 years to build ideally after applying. Then my kid would be 5,6years old and reno cost is a new higher level, by then I'm already close to 50 years old...then it didn't solve aging issue and baby matters...a non mature 2rm at kovan is $200k onwards when it's launched, so what's the price tag of a 2rm bto for me in next 2 years? (Not forgetting there's standard/plus/prime to consider) how much to really get chance of a 2rm bto? And how to really convince that everyone get a house of their own as what they said over the parliament ?
Then giving couple with a newborn baby 5rm bto just simply because they can afford .
Then there's really no point for public to apply and ballot, simply to say priorty goes to high nett PCI and family nucleus profile applicants then comes to the old and/or singles...seriously?

The main reason for allowing couples to apply for BTOs is for the formation of family units (having children). For the mature couple gunning for high demand BTOs waiting till their late 30s to get a home, with statistically much lower chances of conceiving, why should they have priorities over singles ? Govt should revise OUTDATED policies to combat the profiteering of DINKS.

  • @cuteart4470
    @cuteart4470 11 месяцев назад +8

I can understand from govt point of view to let couple buy BTO (for family planning) compare to single getting smaller BTO. But now the times has change, more couples do not want to have kids and sell their BTO flat to earn more money to upgrade to Condo. If couples not planning to have kids they also do not need a 4 rooms or 5 rooms bto which they can sell as a super profit later.
So i think govt plan should change. everyone will pay the market rate for bto and once the couple have a kid the govt will refund the subsidy rate to offside their housing loan.
For single, i think min they can allow to buy 3 room bto, so if they happen to find a partner, they can already stay in the house and dont need to sell their smaller 2 room or wait another 5 yr to get a better house

One of the main reason for married couple to get a BTO so that they can quickly settled down and start making babies. However, a lot of couples nowadays are not planning to have baby, they are just waiting for MOP and sold the flat for a 100% profit.
To achieve the target of more babies, we should impose a baby tax, those selling flat after MOP and without any baby should impose a 20% tax on profit, alternatively, a baby tax can be included in purchase price for married couple, within 3 years if they have baby, the tax will be refunded.
There should be measures to ensure couple getting BTO are those that really want to start a family, otherwise they should be seen as just two single staying together and therefore should be treated the same as single since they do not contribute to more babies like the single. of course, exemption should be given for those who are not able to conceive due to medical reason.

If resale market goes up, BTO prices will go up also and this will lead to domino effect in time to come, let us think long term, don't get offended just because Singles want privacy.

Given that Singapore doesn't allow same sex marriage, so it's BS to say it's about family, because same sex can adopt kids.
Everyone is a taxpayer, therefore, they should be all be treated equally. I would say regardless which is fair, it's a fact that this is an age and gender discrimination.
The only way the current setup is morally right is if and only if married couples are forced to pay higher income tax rate, and homosexual have lower income tax rates. no service = no taxation.

The lack of Land mass in Singapore is the root issue and there is also the problem of people preferring flats located in certain areas. To add on, land are also used in the development of migrant domitories. At this rate, no matter what kind of public policy is implemented, it will not solve the problem. Worse still, the 35 year old policy is causing a segregation between Singles and Married Couples which is a situation that is not purposefully caused but cannot be avoided. Even land reclamation will not solve the problem

Actually in this economy now, no need to think about buying properties unless no need any loan. it will be more logical to create more cheaper rental houses that singles can ownself rent and feel safe in.

Tell you how to overcome this problem. If there is law that prevent you to own homes, not the private developer own and self build. Gather a club of single buyers to total up on 2 condo buildings of 1 acre. Register a developer company to build a project just say 1 acre land & 2 high rise building. 20x35 floors and 1 floor penthouse and roof (public rest area with cafeteria). Build by your appointed contractors, gather the money to pay and get loan. Solved. Not government build housing and quota limit to singles. You can own a unit by sharing the entire private project. 3 rooms 4 rooms you like. Its your combined project.
