Let me know your top fantasy standalone recommendations!
You have become the best fantasy booktude channel for me in the last few months. Your content is really top!
Wow, thank you!! Glad you're enjoying the content!
My favorite standalones are:
Cage of Souls - Tchaikovsky
Dragon Mage - M.L. Spencer
The Fantastically Underwhelming Epic of A Dead Wizard and an Average Bard - Ardalan
The last 2 years I have been making a list of books to be read and tracking my progress. Your channel has been a huge help in finding amazing books to read and some of your recommendations have turned into my favorite books/series! (Red Rising and StormLight Archive especially)! I'm really looking forward to checking out Blood Over Bright Haven when I start my new list. Thank you so much for making these videos, you're awesome!
Between Two Fires has become one of my absolute favourite books of all time. Loved it! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
It's so good!!!
I’m looking forward to Blood over Bright Haven. It’s finally coming out in audiobook at the end of October. I’ve wanted to read for so long and it’s finally coming
Oh awesome! I didn't realize the audio book was coming out in Oct. I really enjoyed the audio book for Sword of Kaigen
You just confirmed my decision to make The Lions of Al-Rassan my next read. Thank you!
I'm going to be listening to Blood over Bright Haven when the audiobook comes out in the end of October. It's not really my style, but I'm going to be checking out Between Two Fires at some point this year as well in order to complete a reading challenge.
The Neverending Story by Micheal Ende is one of my favorite underrated stand alone fantasy books.
Glad to see GGK in your list. The man is a genius! Its criminal how little he gets talked about on booktube.
Glad to find other fans here!
Great recommendations! I am always looking for standalone anything, but especially fantasy.
Yes finally, it's great to see Blood Over Bright Haven get some recognition, you love to see it. Forgotten Beasts of Eld has been on my TBR since you first mentioned it, it'll definitely have to be my next read in-between series
Very good timing as I just finished "Between Two Fires" this morning.
I've been raving about Between Two Fires for years. It is so dark and so bright simultaneously.
Such a great book!! I'm so surprised it's not talked about more on RUclips. I definitely need to make a full video discussion on it
Thanks for the great recommendations. The Forgotten Beasts..sounds very interesting and I also have been wanting to add some GGK to my TBR.
OMG!! I watched the animated movie of the Last Unicorn! It was a MASTERPIECE. And only just last year found out that it was based on a classic novel! I highly recommend watching the movie after reading the book.
Also, The Lions of Al-Rassan has Greatly intrigued me. Putting it on my next TBR list.
I'm excited to get to Blood over Bright Haven soon - I enjoyed Sword of Kaigen and have high hopes for it!
Also really nice to see Forgotten Beasts of Eld get a shoutout, that book's so underrated. Patricia McKillip wrote some great stuff in general. Ombria in Shadow was also really good if you haven't read it as yet.
And then there's Al-Rassan, my single most favorite GGK novel that I've read so far. Absolutely brilliant book.
Another standalone I'd highly recommend is Project Hail Mary. It's a sci fi novel, I found its story to be very gripping with its fast pace. It involves really interesting scientific concepts and light bulb moments that made it a very satisfying read for me
I just love The Last Unicorn 💖🦄✨ I read it for the first time during the pandemic and it has really stuck with me. Thank you for giving this book some love on Booktube
I’m waiting for my sprayed edge hardcover of blood over bright haven to come in.
Thanks for these recommendations. I am amazed seeing that silver play button. 🥈▶️
I like how you made it a top six with a mention of Sword of Kaigen 😀
😉
Love your channel bro
Thanks! Happy you enjoy the content :)
Thank you sooooo much ❤
I have had the book Lions of Al-Rassan for years now. Have to add it to the reading list now
Between Two Fires is my fav read this year so far
The Daughters' War put me into hard book withdrawal. I've been listening to old favorites for two days. I even pulled out a Discworld 😉🤭
The Necromancer's House is one of my all time favorite stand alones.
Fun video !! And yes Kaigen is a work of art. The si gle most gut wrenching scene across all lit for me 😢
You have just convinced me to put all of these on my TBR lol! It’ll be a while till I get to them but someday will read all of these try all sound good!
Haha the never-ending TBR just got bigger! I hope you enjoy the books when you eventually get to them! :)
I would be so happy if you would do a top list of horror fantasy novels. I would love more of these (Berserk) style recommendations
Between Two Fires is free on audible rn. I’m jumping on that, thanks!
Thank you for that information! I just went to Audible and grabbed it.
Christopher Buehlman sounds more & more like an author that could inspire my own dark fantasy writing. :) Thanks for reminding me of Between 2 Fires! 😊💙📚
It's a great dark fantasy story! Hope you enjoy it!!
@@CapturedInWords Thank you, man! :)
Between two fires sounds so interesting. Definitely added that one to my tbr
Such a great book, that deserves more recognition. Hope you enjoy it!
Mr. Words, my wife is pregnant with our first Child. Would you consider making a tier list or something with books to read to a kid? And like at what age should I read her each?
As someone with a 3 month old, I second this request!
The timing of this video is just crazy. I was just asking another book tuber about Fantasy (real) standalone books recommendations about a week ago.
Haha perfect timing! Hope these recommendations help :) If you're looking for more standalones I have another video from I believe last year that goes over 10 standalone fantasy books as well
@@CapturedInWords I think I've watched that one and read a couple of the recommendations. (Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay and The Witch King by Martha Wells) Still didn't read Spinning Silver which was mentionned there as well. Nor Uprooted which wasn't but is written by the same author.
I have to read sword of Kaigen though ! it's featured in both videos and booktubers are pushing it down my throat the same way I was pushing breaking bad on my bodies. So the hype most for a reason.
So far, my all time favorite stand-alone is Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny. Always looking for a new one to take first place, perhaps one of these. Thanks for the list!
I've heard lots of good things about Lord of Light, I'll definitely need to give it a read soon. Thanks for watching!
Some more great Standalones
Tad Williams - War of the Flowers - War between fairies
Neil Gaiman - Stardust - a kind of fairy tale
John Moore - Slay and Rescue - makes fun of clichés
Great recommendations! I enjoyed Stardust, and will definitely check out the others
Really love The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, my most favorite fantasy everrr
Between Two Fires sounds interesting. Thanks for the recommendation.
Hope you enjoy it!
Between two fires is one of my all time favorites, love to see it get some appreciation!!
Such an amazing book! Hopefully more people will hear of it! At some point I need to make a full video discussion on it
Alright my guy please what is the name of your signature soundtrack that you use in cosmere videos thats atleast where i listend to it on your channel
Good for you for listing Forgotten Beasts of Eld (all of Patricia's books are great. Her prose is lyrical and her stories are full of wonder). Also, Kudos for listing The Last Unicorn and The Lions of Al-Rassan.
Love Forgotten Beasts of Eld! I'm currently reading her Riddlemaster series and hope to explore more of her books soon. Also need to get to a handful of other Guy Gavriel Kay books soon!
@@CapturedInWords It is great that you are delving into Patricia McKillip's books. The Riddlemaster Trilogy is great (book 3, Harpist in the Wind was nominated for a Hugo and won the Locus Award). I also recommend the following: Winter Rose (1996 Nebula Award Nominee), The Tower at Stony Wood (2000 Nebula Award Nominee), Ombria in Shadow (2002 World Fantasy Award Winner and Mythopoeic Award Winner), In the Forests of Serre (2003 Mythopoeic Award Nominee), Alphabet of Thorn (2004 Mythopoeic Award Nominee).
i wish i hadn't committed to Kingkiller Chronicles and just read standalone books....now I'm just waiting for Doors of Stone. Still tho, im looking forward to ur wise man's fear summary part 2....please
I totally understand that. Kingkiller Chronicles and A Song of Ice and Fire have both made me feel a bit skeptical about starting an unfinished series now. I suppose Patrick Rothfuss is still young enough to publish book 3 (if he gets around to finishing it) but I've lost hope in other authors like George RR Martin.
The Last Unicorn is the first book in what is currenty a 5-book series. The Way Home, book 5, came our in 2023.
What's the soundtrack you used in The Last Unicorn?
I really enjoyed, Blood over Bright Haven!
If you liked Between Two Fires by Buehlman, I highly recommend you give the novella Hellmouth by Giles Kristian a read. These two are the best medieval horror books I've read so far. Other great standalones that come to mind: Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman, Railsea & Kraken both by China Mieville, Never Die by Rob J. Hayes, The Once and Future King by TH White, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik.
Thank you.
I had only 4 hours left on the audiobook for Between Two Fires when I DNF it. It was interesting and had a lot of good potential, but ultimately I was forcing my way through it and couldn't find a real point to the story.
Up until the last act of the book you really don't know what the point of the journey is.
Loved The Lions of Al-Rassan! Tigana is another good one by Guy. I enjoyed The Monsters We Defy by Leslye Penelope. It’s a phenomenal heist Urban Fantasy book.
I love Tigana as well! :) The Monsters We Defy sounds really interesting, I will definitely add it to the list of books I need to get to
GGK is brilliant.
I love the Last Unicorn film but I've never read the book 😳
Andre Norton's Three Hearts and Three Lions
Neil Gaiman has many stand-alone fantasies that are very good. My personal favorites are American Gods and Neverwhere.
Patricia McKillip was very popular when a young. Good recommendation
I just read Those Across the River by Chris Buehlman and I really enjoyed it. More of an American Appalachian Werewolf Horror novel!
I'll have to give that one a read!
Do you recommend TLU even to people who didn't like the movie of it?
My favorite standalone in fantasy right now is probably Sword of Kaigen. Or in technicality any of the first law books standalone, but they are not really actually standalone. I also really like Tress of the Emerald Sea by Sanderson.
I love the First Law standalones as well! Was tempted to include one of them here. Tress is fantastic as well :)
Forgotten Beasts is wonderful!
GGK and ML Wang for the win! ❤🎉
Amazing authors! 🙌🙌🙌
What, "advancement" in fantasy?
Unrelated to anything but you look like Barry Taylor from SortedFood
Nice i finished kaigen phenomenal book
Glad you enjoyed it! It's one of my favorites
@@CapturedInWords yes also I’m reading senlin ascends & started dragon bone chair love senlin so far & dragonbone chairs kind of slow beginning but not terrible.
🎉
I'd add Silverberg's Lord Valentine's Castle.
Will need to give this one a read! Thanks for the recommendation
@@CapturedInWords My mistake. For 30+ years I've thought this was a standalone but it turns out it's part of a trilogy. I'll need to find the other two!
i love ml wang
You: Rodrigo
Me: Rodrigo like Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar el Cid Campeador? xD
I recommend "Lord of the mysteries" webnovel for every Lovecraft fans 👍
tbh none of the books sounded interessting.. but then again I like more swordfights and sillyness.. with a touch of magic..
Have you read The Black Tongue Thief?
WHERE IS A WISE MANS FEAR SUMMARY PART 2????
I'm sure it will be posted on RUclips before book 3 is finished.
Sponsored by the Amyr?
Hot take: I hated Sword of Kaigen. To the point where I DNF’d it.
I just found it really boring after reading 2/3 of it. Don’t get the hype around it. It felt like eating a dry burger with soggy buns
Blood Over Bright Haven was really well written book, but twist was obvious from the start and main character is kinda annoying.
I found this video, highly highly so so, did you have a stroke?
Repeating a word for emphasis is an indication you're not using the most suitable word.
A thesaurus is not a dinosaur, and you desperately need one.
Your watch being so far down your arm bothered me throughout your video.
Oh wow, a woke preachy (liberal of course) fantasy book. Main character is unlikeable. I wonder why it's not doing well.
Anyone know some good fantasy books and standalones without smex scenes and really weird stuff?
As a christian it feels impossible to find good material. I want to read something that isn't just lotr or Narnia
The Last Unicorn
Brandon sanderson books! Zero sex scenes
Diana Wynne Jones books.
