  • When some of us got together for a memorial in honor of Philip Rosheger there was an old acquaintance of his who offered to video tape and to edit the memorial (I apologize but I forgot this gentleman's name). Unfortunately during the long hours spent on editing his computer crashed, and he was unable to complete the video. Fortunately he did give me a "rough edit" of that memorial and I copied it onto a laptop and then promptly forgot about it.
Recently Philip's son Eric contacted a group of us, friends of Phil's, and explained that he was most interested in gathering whatever materials we had of Philip.
I promised Eric that I would research what I had and to send it to him. Consequently I found this "rough draft" and am now posting it on youtube for Eric and the world to see.
Philip was a unique person, highly intelligent and supremely creative. His passing was a great lost to the guitar world and his music deserves to be heard much more than it currently is. This video shows only a couple of his compositions performed at his memorial; indeed his music is extremely difficult to play well. The two offered here are among his most simple works.
I would invite those interested to search for Philip's music as performed by David Russell, his friend and support. David has said that when he was starting out and traveling by car throughout the United States (in order to make as many contacts in the classical guitar world as possible for a budding musician), Philip handed him his personal contacts so that David would have an easier time at it. For this David Russell never forgot the kindness and generosity of Philip Rosheger.
Needless to say David Russell does an excellent job at performing some of Phil's music. I encourage you to search youtube for these videos.

This is great. Good to see David Cronin. Great playing! It has been too many years. Eric should know there is an issue with iTunes. Align tracks with composers so when Apple gives stupid names to those tracks he'll be able to change them when publishing them. Lack of money, covid and seeing Phil's published works seeming to have disappeared on Guitar Solo's pages has had me in slow mode. Hoping not to be taken out by a solar wind,
I still have copies of Jeffrey Finder's work and others who provided the tracks for the Studio Recordings.
Phil's sister Eric's aunt Carla has copies.
William Kapell's children are friends I correspond with who go back to childhood. It took years to collect William Kapell's missing recordings. When we were children Dave Kapell had wire recordings of his father who regrettably died flying into SF from an Australian tour hitting the mountains through pilot error just east of Half Moon bay.
Those wire recordings were all Chopin. Nocturnes, Etudes, Ballades, etc Great hearing a rendition of Serenade on Piano.
Some guitar students from SF Conservatory I met coming out of the old Conservatory building, when I mentioned David Russel a few weeks agol, told me that he is coming in soon to teach a master class.
Ask David Russell about Philip Rosheger was my suggestion, mentioning he was once on the guitar faculty. They will.
It's the day before Election Day 2022. Wishing all Philips friends and family the best. What great playing! More kudos to Tim for all he has done for music in SF, and making it possible to hear Phil's work in various forms. I have to keep coming back myself. Frank Jaffe is someone to look up, too, for Phils work and for his own. That's where I am on this great set as I'm typing. Wow!

John Gilbert, the great guitar maker, told me that Phil used to stay at his house whenever he was in town on tour. David Russel, also, used to stay with John and Alice. David told John that Phil gave David his whole list of contacts (including all guitar societies and concert venues). David was touched and said that the gesture was rare among musicians.

Lovely Tim, I hadn't heard the 1st piece. Eric, I performed at a masterclass your father gave around 1978. I think it was the most interesting of all I've been to. He gave a truly exciting recital for us at the Sacramento guitar society a few years before that. It was riveting!

What a great concert! I met Phil MANY years ago (late '80's) in Tucson when I was studying at the U of A. I had probably 3 lessons with him and was both amazed and moved by his talent. His concerts were phenomenal! Is there a possibility I could get a copy of Serenade from you? It is such a beautiful piece, I would love to learn it. By the way, Jim and I go way back to Bellingham in the late '70s, though it has been probably 20 years since I last saw him. He is playing up here in Seattle in a couple weeks, it will be great to touch bases with him once again.
If you can send me a pdf of Serenade, please send it to dunbarlists at zipcon.net. Thanks for keeping Phil's memory alive!
