I'm getting all emotional after seeing good, old Shug of the piney woods finally grab a paddle and head out on a solo canoe trip. Watching him glide effortlessly across the BWCA does my old heart good. Keep the open side up and maybe you'll be up for a trip to Ontario's piney woods one day!
Lordy, Lordy, Lordy! Shug in a canoe. I gotta say, for a first time solo trip, you made some good decisions. Cold and rainy...stay another day. Windy? Angle the canoe at a 45 degree angle. Got a canoe? Bring a little extra. Portage your own shortage. I hope to see more trips in the future!
72 hours away from 4 day trip in the BWCAW with my 10 year old son. Since it’s all I can think about right now, I’ll say I’m very grateful for this video.
I think I heard you say portage the Canadian way...you've been watching too many paddlers up north! Very touched to be mentioned there---thanks a million Shug. Chilly start, not so fun for wet feet (or the nether regions for that matter), but it only makes that steamy espresso taste better. Love watching you soak up the joy of the canoe trip. Your happiness in this video is palpable Shug, congrats on the great trip! I am at 13 consecutive days chilling in my hammock. All secure in sector Durango.

Great to see the ol' ultra lightweight back packer out on the canoe Shug. The reason you watch so many Canadian channels with canoeing is because of how much water and wilderness we have up here! Was told years ago, "It's Ok to talk to yourself, as long as you don't answer" lol.

Congrats on doing your first solo canoe trip... and, welcome to my world. I've completed 75 BW canoe trips since '92... probably about 1/2 of them solo. Looking forward to the rest of your journey. Thanks for taking us along.

There were several Pelicans mingled with Loons and other water fowl. My adult son's and I all enjoy photography so sometimes we get in each others way as we tend to see similar great shots. Have to chuckle. Lots of fun. Time away is good but coming home is really nice. Low slung chairs are hard to get out of as time goes by. My son's have had to help me at times getting up. Awesome Shug! That high site on Vista Lake is one I stayed on as well for my first solo. 1984 though. Beautiful view. I’m sure people will be jumping in with tips and tricks but 2 things you can do for your back while in the canoe. A seat back chair and foot braces make all the difference. Looking forward to part 2. Thanks!

Well done, nice to see you in a canoe. I like to say that canoe tripping is the highest form of human expression 😀
Shug, your great. I’ve been watching your travels for several years. It’s helpful to live vicariously through your trips. It gives me hope to get on with life again. Thank you Sir!
Get on!
I Love to see you on your first canoe trip. I was based out of Brule Lake, so I know all the lakes that you were on.🌲🌲🌲
Shug, I would valet for you anytime! Just let me know when and where to be. Truly enjoying your trip report. My greatest trip ever was as a Boy Scout spending 10 days on the St John's River in Florida canoeing and camping along the way. Enjoy!!
Man, can't believe a 40+ min video went buy so fast! Great stuff sir. Hope I can make one of those paddle trips myself one day.
Pocket Fisherman!!! OMG! I remember those!! Thats awesome!!
Welcome to the addictive world of solo tripping! Had always struck me as a natural fit for you - well done...glad to see you enjoying it.
Wonderful video like always. We stayed on the Cherokee site and the seagulls were active on that same island. Beautiful site.
Those gulls were fun to gander at. Great site wasn't it?
Just returned from vacation solo trip Sag, Ottertrack, Gigikiki, Cherry, Ester, Sag. Glorious 7 days on a solo in God's country. I'm glad to see you enjoying yourself and embracing mother nature. I celebrated my 66th birthday while on the trip. May we have many more years to enjoy the peace of the wind in the trees.
Had me at “shrimp and maybe crab”…. The nail was a bonus. 😂
Thanks for appreciating the nail!
@@shugemery nailed it!
Now your doing it the way I’ve done it… Fantastic video. Familiar camp sites I explored years ago. Everything looks the same except for the “ Sky Blue Waters”.
We lived off fresh fish daily.. Awesome location. Thanks brother. Terry&ThePirates South Florida
You're going to get addicted to the canoe thing, looks like a very relaxing trip. Can't wait for part 2
Already have the next trip planned!
Nice J stroke Shug! It took me a lot longer to master it then it did for you. I’ve been looking into a Superior Gear hammock and appreciate getting to see one in the field. Thanks for sharing and I can’t wait for part two!
PS- I talk to myself way more on solo canoe trips then any other time. 😜
Just downloaded the podcast WTIP, going to listen to it later.
Yeah Man, solo canoeing for Shug. That is awesome, I am coming up for a week on the trail in late September. I am already planning. Thank you for the video.
nice run - love your channel - glad I tripped over it! :)
Careful Shug that paddle might just hook you and turn you into a flat water man! Welcome to my home territory! Comeback now, yahear! Thanks👍
Thanks!
Always enjoy your adventures, now even more jealous of the canoe trip.
Really enjoyed the video, an injury at 21 left me with a permanent lower back disability so I can't go lifting heavy loads but I like to walk a few miles each day so I live vicariously through you and your adventures! Cheers from a fellow Minnesotan!
that sucks man! Hopefully you can still enjoy some wilderness. People dont realize how humbling and sacred being out in the woods really is! Stay safe sir! Cheers!
@@slimc3769 Thanks Slim, I still get out when I can, mostly car camping but it's still something, my dream is to do a trip out west on Route 66 through the Mojave and whatnot, I just enjoy open sky and horizons too, but we'll make it through day by day!
Glad to see you out enjoying the water. I have always just wore neoprene socks and water shoes, then changed into boats for portage
Righto~ Thankee.
Wonderful. How you experience the outdoors is fun to watch.
canoeing is luxury, you can bring a lot of home comforts and you're not lugging it on your back for 60km!
Woah Buddy! Shug Buddy! Awesome canoe trip.
I laughed I almost cried I followed along on the BWCA map! Super fun! I missed my opportunity to accidently make it into another of your vides like I did that one year, probably 2 years ago I suppose. HOWEVER one of my buddies who was with me on that previous trip WAS up there during this same rain and cold snap me thinks, makes me wonder if you two ever crossed paths! I can't wait to hear about his trip too! Thanks for the extra long one, and wow nail in the shoe?!? What are the chances? Glad you caught it before you really really got hurt. Looking forward to PART 2! Woooo Buddy! Oh and talking to your self is a sign of extremely high intelligence!!! Me, myself and I have discussed it at length, that has been the consensus.
I love Erin and Jon! They're awesome canoe trippers! Thanks for making this video series Shug! I've been on many of these lakes, although Gaskin Lake is probably my favorite lake in this part of the boundary waters. May be you'll travel it in your next video!
I'll be on it one part 2~~
Thanks for taking me along...
I've got a hankering to paddle down the Rio Grande for an overnighter...
Looks like a fun time Shug! thanks for sharing
