Very sad to hear about the tragedy on Gillis L. I’ve always worried about slipping on rock and breaking a leg or something similar when in the BWCA. It doesn’t take more than a moment for things to turn when in the wild. Very sad indeed.

Hey Shug!! This is a great series! Really diggin the pickin in this one! As well as the singin. This is kinda funny but i watch your vids while i eat dinner and everytime you train the camera on the contents of the doniker I always put my hand over the screen😂. That dry cracked lake bed area reminded me of my burningman days! That’s how it looks out in the NV desert. As a father of two adult girls, it’s heartbreaking to hear about the young man that passed! Just terrible! I was out paddling in the middle of a big maine lake one time without my pfd on but strapped to the deck. I have sit on top kayaks so the boats wont sink but as you know, big waves can churn up on those big lakes. Anyway this older gentleman paddled over to me and said in a real calm voice. “that jackets not gonna save you where it is” I’ve been wearing the thing ever since. If I’m in the little local e.coli pond in my town I won’t but everywhere else, absolutely! I will pray for the young man and his family. Love all your stuff Shug and wish you snd yours all the best! WHOA, never ever did I think I'd hear Kansas on mando! Well done! Plus assorted random comments: Also found Lady Slippers on my place for the first time last year--who knew they grew here in TN? In March though. I'm walking around like your Carl--back has been "out" for a week now--getting better but it killed my 4-day holiday for fishing/camping. But I can stand straight again as of yesterday, just gotta be mindful of getting there. So it was nice to "camp along" from home today. Those G&L's are nice eh? I had one, but didn't hang onto it during a personal financial crunch. The float plane is a 1959 Dehavilland owned by US Forestry-with a lovely Pratt and Whitney 450hp 9-cylinder radial.
Thanks. That was tougher lick to figure out than I thought. Lady slippers.... EARLY in TN. Did you have a G&L guitar? Which model? I am big G&L fanboy. Just ordered a Jazz bass..JB-2 Tribute. Got a good buy on a B stock. Shell Pink.
@@shugemery I had a USA Strat of theirs -same color scheme as SRV's, but all glossy and fresh. I don't personally care for maple fingerboards-and I wish I still had it (and a few Gibsons that slipped away). I'm hanging onto stuff better these days--but my next hobby/toy/tool is a TIG welder... I'm a mixed up sort.
Dragonfly is the exoskeleton, yellow n orange flowers we always called Indian paint brush, but their name is Hawkweed. Thanks for the Vid, cant wait to get out for rice season here in northern WI
Heard that they live underwater at that stage. Thankee for the intel. Enjoy the rice season. One of my wife's cousins harvest too. We get gifted. The best.
It'd be an honor, if you'd ever be interested, to come join me in the canoe for a day of knocking rice. Beginning to mid Sept...indeed they do live underwater for a time of their lives, incredible beautiful bug!
I watched a rice gathering video a couple of years back, and one of the men was shooting a few birds high up in trees. He didn't take a second to aim, he just raised the gun and shot and brought them down.
Hey! Who says you can’t be cranky without being closed minded?😂 Kind of a heavy point with the 18 year old. Life is a precious gift and fleeting as well. Until eternity that is, and then it goes on and on. I digress, thanks for the video!👍🏼
Nice cover of Fly Eagle Fly by The Marshall Tucker Band. This sweet song comes from their second album, A New Life, released in 1974. They came from Spartanburg, SC. They were named after a local piano tuner. Their songwriter, lead vocalist and lead guitar player was Toy Caldwell, who passed away in 1993. This album is good from beginning to end. I still listen to it consistently after all these years. Like your shout out to REI, here's a shout out to Toy Caldwell, wherever he is, and the rest of the band, who made such great music.
That is the song that i have chosen as my funeral song...when that day comes. Grew up listening to a lot of Marshall Tucker. Saw them in concert a couple times. Once with Skynard. Ronnie Van Zant passed out on second song and the Tucker boys came out to cover. Best show ever.
@@shugemery @shugemery I never had the pleasure. I became a fan of theirs much later in life. I did see The Allman Brothers Band at the Manley Fieldhouse in Syracuse, NY. The venue has since been renamed. Back then it had a dirt floor. This was in 1972, 6 months after Duane had died. Even so, it was a terrific show. I see now that the university radio station, WAER, recorded it and it is available for purchase as a two CD set. I just checked it out on RUclips and it's quite different listening to them with just Dicky on guitar. The reason I mention this is I've heard you do a couple of covers of Whipping Post here. This is another band I've never stopped listening to, especially Mountain Jam from Eat a Peach. That version of the song was recorded at the same show as the incendiary Live at the Fillmore East album. Keep pickin
@@raycharlebois122 That is too cool. I've been working up Berry Oakley's bass like to Stormy Monday from Fillmore East Live. Never knew how good he was until I started going after it. When Greg goes into the swingy organ solo at around 4 minutes in and Berry plays this amazing walking bass line. Got it under my fingers now. They were THE BEST!!!

@@shugemery I totally understand. As a veteran and a former fire medic I can 100% sympathize with what you're feeling.
That shot you did from far back with you canoeing by when you started playing your bass was really nice (12 min or so in). The reflection of the trees and the sky in the water was beautiful. I’m also really impressed with how close that zoom lens on your camera can get you. Love these videos Shug. Your videos are some of my favourite way to spend some free time if I can’t be out in the woods myself. Next best thing.
Ahhh...glad someone appreciated that one. That was a Go Pro shot. The zooms are on my Sony DSC HX-80 camera. Thankee for the goodly words Cliff
RIP to that poor fella who drowned. So sad.
Great trip otherwise.. thanks for the video
It was. Cast a pall but life moves on. And on. And on.
I've been told that too. I am acting my age, sorry you are still in high school . . . is what I tell them.
I have watched the lifespan of the males in my family grow and listened to what they said . . .
Run, don't stop 'til you drop. Then pick yourself up and RUN !!! ;>)
Good stuff Joe.
That looks like a sweet campsite. Easy lake access.
Real nice and easy. Went down every eying to wash the dust off of me. Would scrub my feet before sleep. So dusty!
Better to "have and not need" than to "need and not have"...Right Shug?!
Pretty true. In the end I used most everything as temps dropped and rain came.
You’re a treat, Shug!
That kinda made me blush.
Godspeed young man.
Truly.
Nice eagle at 5:30 and lovely music as always
That eagle was watching over me. I think it was my Dad.
@@shugemery I believe so
NQU
Thankee on the music. Makes it extra fun for me. I must I must film the donikers. Shield your googleys.....
@@shugemery 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣💩💩
The Axeman is back! 🎸
Nice birch.
Pink Axe!
@@shugemery your guitar (axe) is pink??? (Not that there's anything wrong with that) 😉
It looks like a nice creamy beige color in the video.
I like birch trees. They're nature's firestarter.
@@shugemery I blurt out "the Axeman is back" anytime someone starts doing riffs on a guitar. (Including my daughter or myself) It's an old Red Dwarf scene from the UK. ruclips.net/video/fAxXexILiy8/видео.html
@@MikeycatOutdoors That was a cool show. I liked the weird ice cube head guy!
@@MikeycatOutdoors It is pink. Circus pink. We circus folk like pink. It is a masculine clown color.
U r amazing!
I'm just below average~~

Plus assorted random comments:
Also found Lady Slippers on my place for the first time last year--who knew they grew here in TN?
Oh I love a maple neck and fingerboard. Have a bass with rosewood too but I like the maple. Feel I can see it better. Weld on!
The canoe. Such a great addition to your repertoire!!! Also Shug have you seen the new ULA OHM in ultra fabric?? It’s time Shug. New pack.
My old OHM still has plenty of life in it. Now...if the sent me one for all the folks I send their way that would be a different story...
08:29 to 08:48 - man, can't beat that. Props to you hardcore dudes that can handle the heat. That's something I just can't tolerate. 😟
The big sit~ The heat was not bad with the wind but the intensity of the full sun beats me down. Thus the shade hunt.
Hell yeah I was hoping for some electric guitar action. Enjoyed the video
Thankee for that.
Dragonfly is the exoskeleton, yellow n orange flowers we always called Indian paint brush, but their name is Hawkweed. Thanks for the Vid, cant wait to get out for rice season here in northern WI
yup!
@@rudysrefuge9033 I thought the hole in the back was from a parasite emerging :)
I watched a rice gathering video a couple of years back, and one of the men was shooting a few birds high up in trees. He didn't take a second to aim, he just raised the gun and shot and brought them down.
My goal is to one day run into you in the BWCA, love your videos!
Big place but I ran into a guy I knew there 2 years ago.
Hey! Who says you can’t be cranky without being closed minded?😂 Kind of a heavy point with the 18 year old. Life is a precious gift and fleeting as well. Until eternity that is, and then it goes on and on. I digress, thanks for the video!👍🏼
Or close minded and joyful...right? I thought I was a super-hero when I was 18. Sad.
Ronnie Van Zant passed out on second song and the
Tucker boys came out to cover.
I've been working up Berry Oakley's bass like to Stormy Monday from Fillmore
East Live. Never knew how good he was until I started going after it. When Greg goes into the swingy organ solo at around 4 minutes in and Berry plays this amazing walking bass line. Got it under my fingers now. They were THE BEST!!!
