  • In this video I cover beginner exercises for the Wing Chun ring. I look at 2 different Jook Wan sizes and go over how to use them in your training.
I am a nomad traveling the US in my RV in search of new adventures. I started training Wing Chun in 1993 while I was in the Marine Corps. Since then I have trained under 2 Sifus. My first Sifu is Les Clements under the Moy Yat lineage. After only 2 years with him, I moved to Oregon & started training under Sifu David Leung in the Ho Luen lineage. While under the guidance of Sifu Leung, I have trained with several well know Kung Fu masters & have taught hundreds of students the art of Wing Chun. Join me as I give basic instruction in the fundamentals of Wing Chun.
My channel is taking a big turn as I have become a nomad. Come and join me as I share fundamental Wing Chun all around the country.

Thanks for bringing up the fact that there are two sizes of Wing Chun rings and the use of the smaller Wing Chun ring.

First, congratulations on your change in your journey. RV living requires a different mindset than just standard household living. Second, I have been training with rings - mine are actually a metal craft ring purchased at a craft store or even Wal-mart - for many years. I also use different sizes for different applications. Just as you mentioned the yoga ring being more forgiving on the arms, the rattan ring is more forgiving than the metal. The metal also requires a lighter touch to avoid those pesky bruises you mentioned in this video but JUST enough to keep in place and under control. I would recommend the metal, thinner rings for more advanced practitioners. Finally, I would like permission to show this and the the vol.1 video on my Facebook group page - "The Better Martial Artist" to help my students not only understand the applications of the rings, but also to see that other martial instructors are using the same tools. Thank you for your work and in advance.

    Sir,
    Recent subscriber here.
    Excellent video !!
I have a jook Wan that is the smaller version and I appreciate the sound advice given in this demonstration.
    Also...
For this video I also did find the particular instrumental music in the background rather soothing even meditative.
    Please tell me the title.
    Thank you.

Thank you for the good impressions, this helps a lot. The only thing I would not train for myself is the punching. As you already said, it is no Wing Chun punching so I won't adapt any motion I better don't use in a real situation. I will fill my muscular brain only with the correct movement, otherwise perhaps all of a sudden I could react in a way I would hurt myself. I understand the idea of keeping the back hand in position, but this can be learned easy by practising all of the "standard" Wing Chun training, too :-) Won't give up my Wing Chun punch ... but this is only my opinion and shall be no critic. I like what you do and motivate people, our time needs more motivated people :-) Thank you and keep on the good work and stay healthy and happy :-)

The whole thing with the ratten ring is muscle memory to help your body to get and use those positions.

Nice, thanks for the vid, not much out there on the Jook Wan. After watching the 30 or so vids out there it can get kinda stale. Of course there is the original "OG" film ; "The stranger from Shaolin" (1977) you can see miss "Wing Chun" in all her glory/ also using the Jook Wan! ; I digress.... thanks again and good luck on your RV adventures. -Cheers
