N14's are bulletproof. One of the best sounding jakes to ever come from that motor in history. Come thru my town James Moore disturbing the peace like that and Sheriff Buford will be on your head.
Yeah they do. My old boss had a flattop 379 with 8in straights. That beast was so loud I could hear my wife on my headset and could barely hear my stereo
@@michaeldobberstein5365 According to the guy who built the motor mines sitting around 550. Ive never had it dinoed but she can get down the road just fine so not to much to complain about.
damn thats really loud lol im looking to get rid of my ram 5500 and 5 car hayler setup and get a nice 96-2000 n14 cummins semi with new overhaul. found nice one with brand new complete overhaul and wanted to hear how the engine brake sounds. little worried about the manual transmission since i got used to automatic over last 2 years and havent worked with manual since cdl school lol
Grtruckingdemolition thanks for the replay i think im gonna get the tractor. i do put in 3000 miles a week on it. you think an older truck like this can handle it ? also im thinking of getting 7 car hauler trailer on it. it should put me at total weight of 70k or so. the tractor with the cummins n14 should be okay right ?
How reliable is the n14 red top? For those who’ve owned an n14 ? I’m currently looking at a truck with that engine in it with an Eaton 18speed. Will be my first truck so I want to make sure I’m not jumping into a problem, it’s a fresh over haul with only 15 miles on the rebuild
Gotta love it. Gangsta truckers with their jakes on, in town and on flat ground fer sh*t's sake. Look at me, LOL 40 years of safe heavy haul and petrochemical experience while truckin' in the Rockies using a jake where it should be used. Hey I like the sound of a jake as much as the next guy but this industry has a bad enough image already without a bunch of sidewalk commandos jerking everyone's chain going thru town with a jake on for every stoplight. Don't get me going about the dorks that can't shift without a jake. Just a crutch that says I don't have my timing dialed in and need a jake to slow the engine down while I shift. Learn how to shift properly and faster by not using the jake, way faster if you know how to shift without the jake. Makes a big diff when pulling 140,000 lbs. up a steep grade and grabbing another gear!

For somebody that's been driving for several decades, you sure do have some really thin skin. Man up and quit acting like a brat
Pretty thick skin actually, the sound of a jake is music to my ears but I don't pretend that everyone feels the same. Ever notice that when entering a lot of built up and populated areas and that they are posted with signs asking to not use engine brakes? Using it on flat ground and in town will get you a lot of dirty looks from most folks since the majority aren't gear heads or truckers. It's only being respectful to not do so needlessly. If being respectful of others is being a brat to you than so be it. Color me a brat. Think about that the next time someone fires up a chainsaw when you're try to sleep, or a dog that barks all night and you gotta get up at 4:30 AM.
74Willy l’m retired from the road, no thin skin here and I’m with you about the jake brakes. This is a good video but found myself wondering why are they on those jakes on about half of these clips. Just shows how things change with time. You gotta know when to use them and know when to lose them. They’ll learn that as they get older.
@@alleycat1084 You are so right Alley Cat, wisdom takes time. Nice as a good jake sounds, after four decades of long long days it does get a little old. There's good reason that trucks with single exhaust always have them on the right. The sound does wear a guy down after a 16-18 hour day. Now I use them only to hold speed on a grades in order to save my service brakes for when I need them. Too soon old...too late smart. My hearing is now toast from decades of a straight piped Cummins ahead of a 5+4.
Call me crazy, but I swear I can hear the difference in the length of strokes between these and a 3406. Sounds slower and deeper.. Idk I’m just a welder..

Bradley Selk it was a joke. But good one though! I like that.

Dammm N14 has some serious Jake Brake sound

Sure does!
We have an old freightliner at work that the shop manager won’t put back on the road because too many people in the city complained about the jake

Up shifting sound damn beautiful in James Moore truck... my goodness that turbo
Not to mention how well them engine brakes actually work, I practically never have to use my brakes because of them.
The first Kenworth w900 looked and sounded fantastic! 🔥
Please do more of these compilation videos because there are soooooo many good videos that you are missing.
Driven a kenworth t650 with a cummins N14 plus 525 the Jake's were the best sound ever I call it thunder clap 👏

Anybody know what normal oil pressure is at 1500rpm on n14?
N14 engines are designed specifically to run low pressure/high volume oil flow systems.
10 psi @ idle.....30 psi @ 1,500 rpm
Yeah cummins in general are low pressure high flow
Mine is at 41/42 @1500and about 20/25 idle
Mine idles around 20 psi and hits about 40 psi on the road at about 1500 rpm
As much as I love it I don't like jake'n at high rpm...
❤ que rrico
Well it's got a read head and a black block...
Mine has 6” straights and doesn’t sound anything like this. They sound very rattley and weak.
so much unnecessary noise and backlash put to a drive line. go think about it ?
Anytime? Or just in these videos.. to record the sound?
If it was up to me I'll send there're asses to the mountains let them play with that Jake all they want
