The guy who grills burgers and surfs every day isn't squandering his potential. He's living his best life. The idea that you ought to work to contribute to society just strikes me as so backwards -- maybe because I've worked a shit job for so much of my life. You work *so that you can* go surfing and grill burgers or whatever leisurely shit you enjoy. Most people don't have the luxury of being able to find some perfectly fulfilling job that maximizes their value to society. If you have the ability to chill out and do what you love every day, you've basically won at life.
I never loved any wagie job I worked, other than being able to work on the computer. And mostly because management will torture your ass, and the commutes are horrible, and these jobs (esp in Canada) only hire immigrants they take advantage of, or really stupid people (like me). The truth of the whole "you should love being a wagie" is equally true and equally false. You'll find plenty of people that say "You're doing God's work, son" and plenty of people will say "Really, you're 30 and still a wagie?", I legitimately believe either are true.
In an ideal society everyone "contributes" to advancing said society is a common concept in collectivist mindsets. Logically, if everyone would go about their day surfing and chilling we wouldn't get much closer to finding cures for diseases or advancing our civilization i.e spreading amongst the stars. That said, not a single society on the planet is ideal, there are naturally people who seek out advancement and complicated goals and others just want to live for themselves. Inherently you can't force everyone to do something as people naturally gravitate to do what they want, but in the end if we want quick advancement to certain goals, we need to contribute more to collective goals. The question is how much of that is actually the case vs how much is achieved by just throwing money or people at it. Would we have more Einstens if we "forced" or incentivized people to be physicists on a global scale? Would we already have bases in the Moon/Mars if governments spent 5 times the resources on space programs than they do now and worked together very closely?
Hearing ppl talk AI at this point is so boring, lmk when the first robot starts unaliving ppl with the name Sarah Connor and then I'll check these AI convos out again
Ya from everything I’ve seen it’s more exciting to be the anti corp and establishment dude Elon was on this bandwagon so hard, even tho I’m not even sure he can code
I think there needs to be an introduction more typical to other podcasts. Who are these people and why are they credible? Why is she talking about the moon when she’s apparently an expert on sex? Who is the guy pillow talking me? Do they know anything about AI? What sort of research does Aella do? Maybe it’s just me.
You basically summed up all my frustrations with this episode. I had high hopes for this one but it was so unfocused that I don't think it was actually worth listening to.
The problem with only thinking about research from a utilitarian approach is that technological advances have occurred from investigating the basic building blocks of our universe. For example, understanding quantum mechanics has led to advances in the development of lasers, MRI machines, and semiconductors. I get what Destiny is saying that there's a limit on the funds allocated to this sort of research but research without immediately obvious utility does have value.
It’s very obvious that different fields are way more matured than others Like people say economics is kinda young but these types would get utterly destroyed trying to pass this stuff as research
I'm genuinely curious why Aaron is involved in this. He might just be camera shy and extremely nervous. It's obvious he's trying to sound intelligent, but he almost never says anything of substance. You can tell Destiny picked up on this and kept pushing him to elaborate on his answers, yet Aaron never contributed any meaningful discussion throughout the entire conversation. He couldn't even mention a single point about an AI researcher he recommended at 1:13:10. Really embarrassing.
@@Toanleigh He's a biotech company founder (toothpaste containing bacteria that purportedly fight off all the bad bacteria) and has written about existential risk of AI.
It's infuriating, I've had to stop listening like 3 times and come back later because it drives me up the wall. I understand that everyone around the table is a humanities person and not in physics, but good lord, as someone who is, it makes me want to defenestrate myself from the top of a scyscraper.
@@yonkocommander5531 She did not. She was pointing out the flaw in destiny's initial explanation of "earth blocks the sun", which he should have known better.
@@klabauther When the moon is positioned between the Earth and the sun, with the side facing Earth in shadow is a New Moon and she (with all the conviction in the world) referred to it as an Eclipse.
@@yonkocommander5531 No. D man said in 10:02 that the earth casts a shadow onto the moon. Aella correctly points out that his explanation would be for a lunar eclipse, not for the crescent moon.
This episode was definitely not the best. Aella comes across as a pseudo-intellectual and Aaron contributed absolutely nothing to the conversation. Nothing of substance was discussed and the discussions that did occur were definitely misinformed, obtuse and difficult to listen to. If these guests came on again, I would absolutely skip that episode. Still love the podcast in general, though.
aella does interesting research and it's not bad given that she's one person and self taught. she can be goddamn insufferable though and she's not at all as intelligent as she thinks she is
@@og666 Someone can be extremely studious and come off as elitist because their ability to socialize is odd to the normal person. This comes off as arrogant and rubs people the wrong way. I don't know if she is talking generally or from a informed position, but again this is all new stuff.
I mean he seems like the kinda guy who just shows up and assumes he looks will always carry him. I admit, it's all vibes but he comes across as wide as the ocean but only a thimble deep. *shrug*
Aaron was such a boring guest, you could legit put a croaking frog infront of the microphone and the experience would have been the same (voice wise too)
For real, we just listened to EVERYONE at the table being 10% correct about different aspects of the lunar cycle. No, the Earth isn't eclipsing the moon 😭 NO, you ABSOLUTELY CAN see a cresent moon at night, even when its completly dark 😭 line of sight is a TANGENT LINE from your position on the circle 😭 you all forget that the Earth rotates 😭 and they were so close at times 😭 jesus... that hurt so much, I'll come back in a week and finish watching this, good god... 😂 she just did the thing to you that she was describing! 😂 wtf?! Edit: and you DO get some reflection of light off of the Earth! Its called Earthshine smh 😂
@Drakiel I'm pretty sure the thing about the crescent moon is correct, it's only visible for some time after sunset and then it sets below the horizon itself
This conversation was so dry. I don't think any of the topics were meaningfully explored either. I probably expected too much from this particular episode
@PlumpPotatoRump The guests are known for sex stuff, so probably not moon phases and AI. Also, is Aella drunk, or does she normally speak that way? Her speech was very slurred.
The crescent moon question is kind of a trick question. During the new moon, the moon pretty much rises and sets with the sun. It will never be midnight with a new moon high in the sky. During a full moon the moon rises and sets opposite the sun. A crescent moon will only be visible lower in the sky, near dawn or dusk, which means the sun is barely obscured by the earth (night)
@@3magikarpinamansuit281if you were an astronaut on the dark side of the moon, you wouldn't have/ see an eclipse. it's just night... New moon only means from your perspective on earth, you see like less than ~25% of dayside and the rest nightside of the moon
@@alexroeggla8708 The moon is tidally locked to the Earth so the same face always faces Earth. The "dark side" always faces away from Earth. But yeah, the darkness we see on the face of the moon visible to us is the onset and then ebb of night across the moon's ~monthlong day/night cycle.
@@doomhand6360 And the certainty with which you take her as being wrong is even better. It becomes even more ironic considering the subject they went into right after, you being the personification of the point of that question. Lunar eclipse is literally when the moon is completely obscured, as the earth blocks the sun's light completely. Also, her moon phases are absolutely correct. When the moon is at the waxing crescent phase it is only visible right after sunset and it will not be visible for the rest of the entire night, only becoming visible again at around early/mid morning. The sun-earth-moon angle is at around 90º. At the waning crescent phase, the moon rises a few hours after midnight and sets at noon. Not only that, but at the New moon phase, there is no moon at night. The moon would only be visible during the day, but since the moon is between the earth and the sun, and the illuminated side of the moon is facing the sun, it isn't visible at all. So please explain to me what was said, that was so obscene?
@@SuperSecretAgentNein Here's a couple reasons: 1. Aella doesn't shower (gross). 2. Neither of them display any emotions in their voices, like they're both robots. 3. They both seem like they think they're superior to others, but pretend as if they're not judgemental.
Meta critique: The camera is the fifth person at the table. Your gestures, how you touch your face or use your hands can invite us in or block us out and alienate us from the conversation. These are things you have to be cognizant of to get better at this. Great episode!
@@__keys More than a few times Destiny would cover his mouth while talking with his right hand, his camera side hand, completely cutting himself off from the audience. He also gestured with his right hand in a way that cut both himself and Kayla from view. This is probably completely solved with better editing choices. It's only an issue when the 4 of them are in the shot.
I'm a software engineer. Would love for him to have a machine learning engineer on to ask questions about. It'd be interesting to see what questions they would ask. Maybe they'd like Francois Chollet or Yann LeCunn. They seem academic enough to engage with their style of questioning without giving into hype based communication.
The discussion around the moon had me on tilt especially when talking about two moons. I feel like if this is something you’ve thought about a lot you’d have googled why our setup is perfect and go down a Descartes rabbit hole like every 16 year old who watched Cosmos one time. I feel like such a snob but my brain is just screaming when these four discussed anything STEM related.
The moon won't be out at night for very long at night when it's new. Ive just recently learned this. Full moons always come out right around sunset and new moons will be out during the day which is why we can't see it.
at 1:06 ish when they're talking about love - I think humans ability to love is uniquely acute. We can have love(many types) for characters, people from history, people who've helped us, people we help. The meaningful attachments to people we'll never 'know' I think is pretty wild. As we mature there's the interest in our human history - how bizarre? I feel that is a form of love too.
The moon question was absolute dead air for a podcast. Gotta remember its an audio-oriented medium and things that require a high degree of visualization just to understand don’t make for good listening. Also the Aaron guys constant rizz voice was… grating.
You can tell he is a writer by how condecending he is, how he uses big words he cant define to seem smarter and he answer dramatically as if he is in a movie or book lol bros faker than my neighbors grass cuh
''I don't look down on these people but... ''' Bro is one of the most useless people on earth who provides nothing tangible to society satisfying his hedonistic needs bragging about his meaningless achievements and he's so proud of himself. The lack of self awareness is so immense with these types of people. A janitor working a single year will have done more than he'll ever done in his entire life.
the fact that aella thinks she's extremely intelligent makes me genuinely feel bad for her, it seems like she might be the least self aware person of all time? I don't know everyone in the world, so I can at least say she's the least self aware person I've ever been exposed to. She's like Terrence Howard but a pretty girl
As someone working in the space industry, your whole segment trying to explain the crescent moon was extremely cringe for me. Especially when you can just Google how it works
Well, probably means you didnt pass the test that was the point of bringing it up. I got triggered as well but looked into it after (just RUclips Crashcourse Astronomy Moon Phases + Eclipses) and it turns out she is actually correct.
"This is probably pretty frustrating for the people who can't see the picture"...I can assure you that was the least frustrating thing happening in the room at that moment
The fact thay everyone at this table fancies themselves an intelectual but can't manage to figure out how a cresent moon works is absolutely hilarious. You can demonstrate this with a single diagram as viewed from above. Like you are looking straight down on on one if the poles. Shade the regions that would be in shadow and draw vision lines. Half of the problem is likely because they put the moon too damn close to the earth. One thing that is true is a crecent moon will never be stright up at night it will always be more near one horizon than the middle of the sky.
It’s wild how someone like you can look down on people actually trying to reason out an answer you were merely given. You’re a person who already knew the answer which, if you were paying attention, wasn’t the point of the question in the first place.
I disagree w aella often, but I absolutely love her and admire her curiosity and thought process. Love seeing her in another Steven conversation. This was also such a stimulating episode!
It's amazing how many people in the comments don't get the pont of the episode. The whole episode is a "shit test" for the audience. People asking for the credibility of the guests, asking for their background, aka - "What do these people know? Why should I trust a word?" These people are not there, yet.
There's healthy skepticism, and then there's solipsism. "Shit testing" someone only to reveal you don't actually have your own shit together is an absolute failure of "ethos" one of the big three general rhetorical appeals you can make to advance your argument. Appealing to expertise or experience - part of that ethos thing - in a topic is important because it's practically impossible for every person to critically consider every small detail in life like she's asking people to consider the phases of the moon on the spot here. In this case it would have taken a minute, maybe, for an expert to explain and give a tangible example compared to the unhelpful waste of time spent by people who are otherwise preoccupied with and better versed on other subjects. In the end, it made all of them look less credible and demonstrates WHY exactly we make appeals to experts even though they too, are fallible.
The moon convo was frustrating but It is incredible how many people are convinced in the comments section that Aella is incorrect, illustrating her point beautifully. It has to do with pride; people in this community have such a high standard for themselves. They need to have knowledge on or know the answer to such a simple question. They are unable to engage in good faith honestly it is terrifying, as I would have never expected it from this community.
Yea, it only works if you are on the equator and close to sea level, which is a small portion of the population. For most people they can lmao It doesn't help that she worded her question so poorly that I only really understood what she was getting at after she gave her answer
Yeah I typed this before they finished, and I too only understand it after like the last part, plus she was using very leading questions and words, that didn't really lead anywhere. Kyla and Steven basically got it right to begin with 😂
It was a misleading question. The answer is you cannot have a crescent moon at midnight and the moon is directly above you. Assuming the sun is on the exact opposite side of the Earth as you, the phases of the moon directly correlate with the position of the moon in the sky. It takes just over 27 days for the moon to revolve around the Earth. However, it takes about 29.5 days between new moons. Each night, the moon will gradually move across the sky, changing its phase. If the moon is directly above you (at midnight), the phase will be about full. A crescent moon can be visible very high in the sky, but not completely, just after sunset and just before sunrise.
my spacial iq is around 140. 14:30 - 16:00. You cannot imagine how much frustration this induced in me. The moon has a cycle, 28 days. It goes from full moon to new moon in 2 weeks, 14 days. ±0.x days, ok! Forget eclipse, that's a special case, doesn't matter now. The moon is lit by the sun!!! The earth and our collective stupidity doesn't matter. The moon is ALWAYS half lit, except in lunar eclipses, where the earth is between sun and moon. In all other times (9x%+) the sun iluminates ~50% of the moon. The moon rotates around our Planet, always facing the same way. From the sun the moon is always half lit, or fully lit if you ignore it has a backside. When you guys say "night" - where? Switzerland? USA? Australia? South/North Poles? Ecuador? Well... guess what - it doesn't matter. 21:42 LOVE THAT, FUCK THE MOON, THAT PART RIGHT THERE. DIVE INTO IT, DARK PSYCHOLOGY SHADOW SHIT RIGHT THERE
When thinking about the moon and the earth and the sun, it's helpful to realize that the moon is ~400k km from the earth, and the earth is about 13k km wide. That means the moon is about 30 widths of the earth away from the earth. Thus the moon only need to be a tiny fraction off of an eclipse, you see a beautiful crescent but you don't see the sun. (ie., it is night time when you don't see the sun.) As for a new moon... well, such a moon isn't out at night at all! The new moon rises with the sun, and sets with the sun. Likewise, a full moon rises as the sun sets, and sets as the sun rises.
im commenting before the segment finished but the only way you can see a crescent moon is if it sets closely after the sun does. you will never see a crescent moon at like 3am, only for like an hour after the sunset
Me sitting in my car at 10pm (hst, 3 hours after sunset) looking at the moon (maybe crescent rn?) wondering what I’m misunderstanding lmao. Thank u for the clarification
Insisting on calling yourself a sex worker is the opposite of not being ashamed. She was a camgirl. She did OF. If you're not ashamed, then say that. It sounds like she's moved more into researching and writing about sex recently. If you're not ashamed about it, say "I research and write about sex." The general "sex worker" label is so ambiguous, nobody knows what you're talking about, and that's intentional. It's ambiguous because people are shameful of the specifics of what they're actually doing. If I ask a guy what he does, and he says, "I work in finance," when he has a minimum wage job at a bank or promotes crypto scams, that answer is 100% meant to be ambiguous to cover up the shame he has for the specific thing he does. If another guy also "works in finance," but at a prestegious investment firm, he's more likely going to tell you his title and firm instead of just giving the ambiguous "finance" answer. Any time you hear someone use the term "sex worker," it's a massive cope because they know the perception people have of what they actually do, and they're ashamed of it.
Oh, and a follow up, how often do you hear people insist on not being ashamed about something that they really aren't ashamed of? People who aren't ashamed about something aren't even going to bring it up. It's not even on their minds that they would be ashamed about the thing.
This might be true with some people sometimes. However, it's definitely not true for everyone all the time. For instance, when meeting people or in light conversations, it's usually easier to simplify your answer to specific questions for multiple reasons, time for one maybe they don't have the time to explain forensic accounting so they say finance. Maybe you're a complete stranger or have only spoken a few times, so instead of saying i do deep throat BBC bukake videos, it's easier to just say I do sex work. Not everyone uses simplified terms or broad definitions, is doing it out of some deep shame. It's also rude and rather dumb to assume this of others. Just because you think something is looked as shamful in society doesn't mean everyone engaged in that is ashamed, and certainly, you can't just claim they are because they use ambiguous language. Also, maybe they just don't like having to explain every aspect of their finance job because most people don't understand finance at all. Maybe they get asked stupid questions all the time, and instead of trying to explain things, they just simplify it to save time. Lol, the same with sex work. Most people have no clue or just assume the worst. Why does not fully explaining the details or specifics of something equal deep Shame of that thing?
Sometimes people don't go into specifics because they don't want to go into detail because they know people don't actually give a shit. For example I say "I do computer stuff" precisely one time has anyone shown further interest in that statement outside of tech events. "I manage the compute cluster for semiconductor simulation and DRC checking" is word salad to the general populace so they gain zero from the statement. So being abiguous isn't always to pump yourself up, sometimes it's simply because you know people don't care or do not want details other times it's because you don't want to talk about work when not at work. Unfortunately neither of these answers result in people not wanting me to fix some computer or phone issues they have.
This comment section is cancer, but those people complaining are the same ones saying they stopped watching before hearing Aella's answer to the Crescent moon question. When she asked "You know when you look up in the middle of the night and you see a crescent moon. Where is the sun?" It's meant to be a trick question. The answer, which she explained, is that it's impossible to see a crescent moon at midnight because a crescent moon only appears when the moon is in between the sun and the earth and only appears during dawn and dusk, but not in the middle of the night. When asked most people might be confused and not question the midnight part because they don't really know how the Moon Phases work, or they might give a very "confident" wrong answer, or they know the answer already.
Lots of hate comments here today Honestly Aella almost always offers interesting conversations. But this episode wasn't half as good as it could've been having her as the guest. That said, still, it wasn't as dry or surface level or whatever else the other comments are saying it is to be. That dude however contributed nothing. I got excited when he brought up his sci fi stuff but he just vocal fried, head tilted his way through the conversation. The podcast could also have been edited much better. Lots of conversations trailing off, going nowhere, going all over the place some times, and 6/10 closer to a 7 than a 5
The intro is really triggering because of the differences of volumes they are speaking at so to catch it you need to max volume and then your ears get destroyed by Destiny speaking at normal volume and next second you are again struggling to make out what the guy is saying... But generally the conversation isn't too bad....if you have good over-ear headphones... UPD: Okay, the second hour is rather painful.
I wonder if doing an intro for a podcast like this is even a good idea. Looking at other podcast on RUclips, they all just seem to get straight into it
I swear cresent moons are totally possible at nigjt time. The sun is behind the earth, just enough light is passing by the earth to light up one edge of the moons surface.
Yes, in summer if you are far enough north, the cresent moon should be visable even in the middle of the night. But with the 2D representation they used its a bit hard to visualize
@@erikh-j8i Right? Was she saying it's impossible to have a cresent moon at night and that people only think it's possible because it art and animation?
She was saying its Impossible since the the moon and sun have to be "close" in the sky so that we mostly look at the dark side of the moon, and the sun is close to the horizon. But the sun can be close to the horizon at midnight far enough north in summer or far enough south in winter
I would love to hear Aella talk more on MBTI, this is often dismissed by others as equivalent to astrology and hence not much further value, but MBTi does reveal certain cognitive processes people adopt, maybe doesnt determine ultimately how open-minded one person is due to their inherent biases and pressure from others, but at least provide some insights into their approach to processing things
MBTi is largely just nonsense. None of the traits have even been shown to be consistent over meaningful periods of time, let alone inherent. The only way those tests are useful is if they show internet traits, because if the traits are changeable, knowing your traits is as useful as knowing you suck at a sport. If you have a severe lacking in self awareness, it can show where you lack (although your answers will likely be skewed in this scenario), but that’s the extent of its usefulness
That moon problem was fun. First you have to draw what we know. The most basic info is the movement of the earth and moon with relation to the sun. Then you create a schematic for the way the sunlight travels, you put that in a 3D schematic and the answer is pretty obvious after that.
Full moon rises as sun goes down. As it's equally mirroring. Moon changes roughly 1hr each night. Making the moon a little less. There is no crescent moon on the middle of the night, by the time its crescent its during the day.
I think in general this statement is correct, but if you are far north in summer, or far south in winter, the cresent moon should be visible even in the "middle" of the night, but the 2D representation they used for the visualization does not allow to see the line of sight to the cresent moon that is possible "on top" of the world.
@@erikh-j8i I comment way before the diagnosis... its just a simple lame generic drunk observation of the moon. I doubt many people even understand the moons off kilter to our 24hr clock. :)
Destiny, could you enable recording for the ipad drawing program so we could see? I think this could enhance audience experience. Especially if you could configure it to work live for anything else as well!
Good sex isn't hard to do - just have a mutual understanding that you are creating a safe space for the other to enjoy acceptance while being vulnerable. Boom. Fantastic sexual experiences for all involved. If you can't bring yourself to be loving enough to the other person(s) you are engaged with to do this, then maybe stop until you can get to that point. It blows my mind how bad at this most everyone seems to be.
TRUUUUE. It’s very easy to have good sex, and anyone (men and women both do this) that say it’s hard to get women off just don’t understand sex. Getting women off is a bit more physical effort (this might not be true, as I’ve never had sex with a man, but I’m assuming), but it’s still super simple at the end of the day
The Moon question left me almost yelling at the screen "It's impossible!" For ten minutes straight. But I enjoyed it anyway. I'd look the same, when faced with similar type question in a different field.
The hate Aella gets is inexplicable to me. She is correct about the moon thing, and it actually lead to a really interesting point. This is one of the best episodes I have watched, though it's true the other dude didn't add much.
Because you’re obsessed with her as a person. There are plenty of comments laying out why she was dumb in that segment, but you ignore them because you want to like her holistically. This is a YOU issue, my friend
@@DavidJones-ot8qu Could you point me to such a comment, or explain why yourself? There are of course comments explaining incorrectly why she's wrong, or misinterpreting her position, which is pointed out if you look in the replies I also just want to say there's no reason to be such an asshole. If you would really prefer to make yourself as unappealing to interact with as you can, that's your perogative, but it serves no one and just makes the internet a shittier place
When we have a crescent or no moon it the moon is close to the horizon and the sun is of course beyond the horizon. That is how only a little slice of daytime on the moon is showing.
On the moon thing, I think aellas, thing might just be related to how she determines what night is? You can see a crescent moon in the night sky, just not very high above the horizon/not like all through the night, I go to sleep fairly early so maybe that's why I would call this 'in the night sky' This would also square why she would have a memory from childhood of the crescent moon in the night sky, as most people have earlier bedtimes/concepts of when night starts than into their adulthood. It funny, if I'm right this would mean that she's sort of tricked herself into believing she has a false memory when in fact she's just experienced an extremely common shift in time perception based upon stages in life.
I looked into it even more and aellas thing also didn't account for the tilt of the earth which changes the extent one can see the new and crescent moons in the sky seasonally based on your hemisphere. Depending on multiple factors including how you determine night(time vs sun setting), your local topography(mountains can make the sun appear to set earlier or rise later) and your personal schedule, one could easily see these moons in the night sky without having a false memory. It's not actually a huge deal, but it's actually interesting that aellas example of a sort of bias/false memory/Mandela effect is actually a demonstration of multiplle different(and arguably more interesting) types of bias: 1. Inability to identify and account for a subjective/local interpretation of things 2. Leaning toward a trendy/contemporary explanation of a phenomenon 3. Assumption that something is wrong with your own prior memory/perception rather than trying to determine how you may have changed across time to create a difference in perception. Here's an example, when I was a kid I perceived my parents as being very tall, today I don't, I wasnt wrong or incorrect necessarily, but i see why my perception of their height has changed based upon my own height changes and baseline of 'tall' changing, additionally, in certain populations or to certain shorter people I can realize that the subjective measure of 'very tall' might still include my parents, finally, even though it's trendy to read social dynamics and how they can affect perception today, I wouldnt read my parents power/confidence over me as a reason why my perception was distorted when there's a more clear explanation that shows my prior perceptions and current perceptions are both correct/coherent that it primarily relates to my own height as an adult being taller than them(+ some shrinkage that occurs with older ages), the social power thing might be a small part of it, just like if someone remembers a crescent moon directly over head then false memory is a part of it, BUT only to the extent that they are misremembering where the moon was in the sky, not that it was in the sky
"All of the science we pursue is something we think is going to have a technical application." I can't believe he makes this assumption after pointing out that it's a bad assumption to assume that all people are purely rational. Actually, this is Destiny's thing: he's come to understand the irrationality of Man, but not that of the authorities.
Yeah, it's also just not true. Understanding how the world works tends to be useful, but most people just pursue an idea because it's interesting to them. The theory of relatively was thought to be useless for a long time. It was only later that some application was found for it.
He described us following bugs around a forest. There are literally people who do that but for a bunch of different animals lol. There are people who only focus on one group if animals and dedicate their lives to researching them. They probably aren't getting a lot of technical applications from this.
It's ironic that he isnt religous when he puts so much post-hoc intentions to certain discoveries when most of the time the application part didn't come in until much later. It wasn't until 1600 years after the concept of Longitude was discovered that we applied clocks to measure longitude for maritime navigation. Similar to religious people putting a lot of intentionally into evolution or other natural phenomenon.
The moment at 1:53:30 when Kyla was talking about waking up with her husband and dog and how she wouldn't give it up for anything... It's beautiful. Dare I say absolute cinema, definitely my favorite moment yet.

The crescent moon question is kind of a trick question. During the new moon, the moon pretty much rises and sets with the sun. It will never be midnight with a new moon high in the sky. During a full moon the moon rises and sets opposite the sun. A crescent moon will only be visible lower in the sky, near dawn or dusk, which means the sun is barely obscured by the earth (night)

I shut the video at this point. The certainty with which she wrongly explains it just gets to me.

The earth and our collective stupidity doesn't matter.
The moon is ALWAYS half lit, except in lunar eclipses, where the earth is between sun and moon.

(ie., it is night time when you don't see the sun.)
As for a new moon... well, such a moon isn't out at night at all!

Insisting on calling yourself a sex worker is the opposite of not being ashamed.
She was a camgirl. She did OF. If you're not ashamed, then say that. It sounds like she's moved more into researching and writing about sex recently. If you're not ashamed about it, say "I research and write about sex."
The general "sex worker" label is so ambiguous, nobody knows what you're talking about, and that's intentional.
@@user-gx8dl1dt2y if you have to insist you are a thing its usually because people insist you arent that thing or something else.

Oh god. Aella back at it with her phony doomerism edginess, rivaled only by Yudkowski himself.
Yudkowski one of the 4 horseman of horrible AI takes seems to be responsible for like 70% of the misinformation on his own somehow.
AI doomerism is the perfect trap for pseudo-intellectuals lmao, they literally can't resist it. It's like high tech virtue signaling.
Damn, the thumbnail baited me into thinking Kyla grew up out of her tween phase and ditched the choker.
Ah, a podcast from a simpler time.
Audio. Stop hitting the table.
That moon problem was fun. First you have to draw what we know. The most basic info is the movement of the earth and moon with relation to the sun. Then you create a schematic for the way the sunlight travels, you put that in a 3D schematic and the answer is pretty obvious after that.
But if you try to draw out her example it’s impossible, because she gave a false premise.. no wonder everyone got confused
Omg how has everyone not thought that the moon reflection is a 3 dimensional problem by the 20 minute mark?
That’s doesn’t help
The moon either rotates out of our sight around midnight or into our sight in the early morning hours. That's how the answer should be phrased.
Aaron should be a Narrator for erotica audiobooks
Never notice but Aella often mumbles some words. The way she speaks reminds me of Elon too.
There are of course comments explaining incorrectly why she's wrong, or misinterpreting her position, which is pointed out if you look in the replies
I also just want to say there's no reason to be such an asshole. If you would really prefer to make yourself as unappealing to interact with as you can, that's your perogative, but it serves no one and just makes the internet a shittier place
Oh my god... that was painful to watch, but then again, I wasted 4 years of my life majoring in physics and mathematics
When we have a crescent or no moon it the moon is close to the horizon and the sun is of course beyond the horizon. That is how only a little slice of daytime on the moon is showing.
10:13 Thank you for positioning the microphones to hide Aella's armpit hair, very patriarchy of you.
She's gross.
OMG the second hand embarrassment for Destiny with the moon question. Zero spatial reasoning.
On the moon thing, I think aellas, thing might just be related to how she determines what night is? You can see a crescent moon in the night sky, just not very high above the horizon/not like all through the night, I go to sleep fairly early so maybe that's why I would call this 'in the night sky'
This would also square why she would have a memory from childhood of the crescent moon in the night sky, as most people have earlier bedtimes/concepts of when night starts than into their adulthood.
BRIDGES #11: Moonfall.
"All of the science we pursue is something we think is going to have a technical application."
I can't believe he makes this assumption after pointing out that it's a bad assumption to assume that all people are purely rational.
Aarons like........wtf am i doing here...how did i get here....
i just realized, "omniliberal studios". Did D-man finally launch his media group thing?
Great stuff as always!
The moment at 1:53:30 when Kyla was talking about waking up with her husband and dog and how she wouldn't give it up for anything...
It's beautiful. Dare I say absolute cinema, definitely my favorite moment yet.
I almost didn’t watch this. Glad I did.
Does no one know about moon cycles? How the moon orbits the earth? 😂😂
Maybe I don't. I sure wish there was someone who could explain it.
37:50 I love this 😄
