- How do you propagate Jade succulents? I have never tried propagating Jade from stem cuttings so I do not know what the best way is. So in this video, I will experiment on 2 ways of propagating Jade. Which one works? Which one is better? Let us start the experiment.

I have an interesting story about propagating jade plants. Last February, In had to move to a new apartment. I had two plants of Crosby's compact jade plant, and when I unpacked one of them, I noticed that a branch had broken off. Crosby's is a variety with very small leaves, and this branch was about an inch and a half long with about three sets of leaves. I saw that it was perfect for a cutting, but I was busy unpacking at the time, so I trimmed off the extra leaves and set it aside to callous. As anyone who has ever moved knows, I was too busy for some time setting up my new apartment to do much with my plants, and since it was February, most of them were dormant, so they didn't need much care. As I walked by my table from time to time, I could tell that the little cutting was still plump and healthy. It was after three weeks that I finally had enough time to plant my cutting. I have a bunch of four ounce jars with a 5/8" hole drilled in the center of the lids. I use these when rooting cuttings in water, but, in this case, it was dry, and the bottom of the cutting was suspended in air, so that it would callous over. When I took the cutting out of the jar, It had already rooted! A lot of aerial roots had sprouted from the lowest node of the branch. All I needed to do was put it into a pot and water it in. The plant has now doubled in size and is well on its way to becoming a nice plant. The lesson is that you can root cuttings of Jade plant in soil, water, or even in dry air. It's no wonder that jade plants are just about the most common succulent plant in the world.
I would like to add a little tip about moving cacti in winter. I packed my plants as carefully as I could, first covering the soil in the pot with paper towels, then wrapping the pot in shrink wrap. When I got to my new place and opened the wrappings, I found that, in spite of all my care, the dry soil in about 80% of the pots had trickled out through all the wrappings. I ended up having to repot almost all of them. It would have been much easier and faster to take them out of their pots and pack them bare root.

@@CactusCaffeine I enjoyed your expirament! My vote goes to soil propagation for winner. As many plants seem to root best in distilled water vs. harder tap water, for Jade, soil beats water! I have some really neat new Jades, new to me. They seem soft after getting watered and overnighting around 45°F. I brought them inside today. Looking forward to learning more about growing them. The Jades seem most affected out of all my succulents outside in these cooler nighttime temps. Thank you!
@@ofhismercy109 In fifty years of ordering plants by mail or online, I've found this is the most popular way of shipping cacti and succulents. You can put more plants in a box, and the weight is much less. The thing is to make sure to have plenty of time and enough potting medium to repot the plants when you get them to their new home. You don't want to leave them in the box too long.
Tool Tip: Great video, thanks Take an old FORK and bend half the length of the tines to 90 degrees and you will have a small rake to use for soil and the handle works for digging holes.

When I was a little girl, I had a jade plant, an Espostoa lanata, and a Mammilaria elongata “Copper King”. I look forward to getting these back again.
I'm glad it worked with both methods. I guess for an experiment you could have used a clear pot to see when the roots come out in soil. And another pretty coffee mug of Hawaii.

I have 3 SMALL jade plants bought on markdown at Walmart last spring.. separated the plants into their own pots.. they haven't grown MUCH, but they're now starting to push out new growth.. now I KNOW how to PROPERLY propagate!! I personally prefer the soil method myself as I did try the water method but no roots formed after a very long time, another way I like to use is to simply just lay a leaf into the soil, it takes longer than just popping a cutting into soil but it's so fun to watch grow. I've done 3 leaves all growing
Crassula ovata can grow roots anywhere, they are so easy to propagate. I have so many I don't know where to place them anymore. Thanks for your experiment❤️

Awesome!!! I don't have much success with this type of jade plant but my Ruffle jade grows like crazy and i propagate from the main plant which is about 2yrs old now!! Great video!!
I have a jade that I purchased last summer that's about 6" tall and fairly bushy. It's the end of November 2021 b/t Thanksgiving and Christmas (Nov. 30), and my succulents are about to go dormant for a few months. The winters are so mild here in Lake Charles, LA and we really - with a few exceptions - detect much difference between the fall, winter and spring, as far as temperatures go. I have a concrete patio that receives morning sun and afternoon shade. I have a few viable petals/leaves that fell off when I accidentally overwatered in the fall and lost a few viable petals (ouch!), so I'm going to use your methods to start new plants. Water propagation doesn't work for me because I live in a humid tropical country. All my cutting rot haha. Best to place them in soil right away. I'm glad both methods worked for you!

Thanks for the video. My jade plant of 10 years just went to plant heaven. Just fell. Roots rotted. I was able to get many cuttings & now I’ll know what to do with them. I’ll try both methods like what you did 🤣. Thanks again and wish me luck. I’m pretty upset I list my Jade plant.

Hello from the UK - love your channel. :-) What I was going to add from my limited experience with rooting Jade cuttings primarily in water is that the minute I moved the rooted cutting to soil, the 'water' roots died and the cutting put out new 'soil' roots. I recently removed a small cutting from its pot to check its root status, only to discover this! So I personally wasn't sure if I should just have rooted in soil in the first place. That said, its winter here in the UK so hard to get anything going with decent roots. :-(
Sometimes they do lose their water roots when transitioned to a very dry soil. I am not sure if my water propagated jade lost their water roots as I did not unpot them anymore. But I found that they all grew at the same rate after being potted in soil. Thank you for sharing your experience! 😊

I have a few Jade plants but none of them have ever flowered! They get lots of grow light lighting but little natural sun. I have put one of them outside during the warmer months but it never flowered. It must not have gotten enough sun or it was not the right time of year.
I always root the cuttings in soil. They always root without any fuss. Jade is a very easy to grow plant as long as you give them the basic conditions that they need.
The only issue that I have with rooting cuttings in water is that you do have to make sure that they get extra water after being planted as the roots grow accustomed to living in soil. I have found that some types of plants are more fussy about that than others.
Jade needs to be old and mature to flower. Maybe your jade plant just needs to age more for it to flower. 🙂

Jade is super easy to propagate! Portulacaria afra is my favorite, although it is not jade. But often mistaken for it.

Awesome video Ana 😊 Not sure on the varieties you have there, but the ones with red edges look a bit like Hummel's Sunset, my friend Phil would probably know for sure. I always root these directly into soil, you can soon get overrun with these plants though if you keep taking cuttings, I have too many haha. I’m afraid I don’t have the same problem. 🤣 i find them so hard to care for here in SG. These plants prefer cooler temperatures which we don’t have here. We have the sun that they need but the leaves wither away, starting with brown spots first like cold damage in cactus during winter because the weather is too hot for their liking. I have killed many of these lovely plants and sadly even gorgeous and expensive variegated varieties of them. 😞 Had the same problem in the Philippines too. Succulents from the cooler, mountainous Baguio where they thrive and flourish when brought down to Manila slowly died because of heat. I still love these plants. 🥰
I tried looking up the name but many crassula Ovata look so much alike. We have the same heat problem Edith. My jades before either “baked” even in shade or were frozen in winter. 🤦🏻♀️ This year I should know better... I hope. 😄

What its the soil do you uses? What mix?
I just stick them into soil no need for cinnamon. Push them down deep in separate pots or they will need dividing pretty soon

Whenever the soil was dry, I would water it.
rooting in water will produce water roots. if you will transplant the water rooted plant to soil, another period of adjustment will take place and there is still possibility for the plant to die. to save time, just plant it directly in soil.

You can either put you clippings in a cup of water and wait for roots or straight into soil, with or without cinnamon. I've done both. In the end you still need to plant them in soil.

Indirect sun and I watered the ones rooting in soil only when the soil was almost completely dry. 🙂

Shawn Silva, yes I watered the cuttings that I rooted in soil. I watered lightly but a little more frequent. I let the soil dry out in between watering but only for a short period of time. 🙂🌵☕️.

I just used tap water. Rain water is best but we don’t get much rain here. 😉

I changed the water as it dries up, about once a week. As for the cuttings in soil, I watered them when the soil was dry and I placed it only in bright shade. 🙂
