    It's great to see a positive review of this game. I played it heavily back in the first couple of years it was out and had a ton of fun with it.

      Yeah I'm surprised by how much hate people have for it, I guess a lot of people just wanted another big fps first

    • @GameplayandTalk

      ***** It was definitely a jarring change, much like Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament were at the time (a multiplayer-only game? Huh?). But, get into it and become familiar with the game and engine, and it becomes a lot of fun. I sank many, many hours in solo play because the game played well and felt good. One of the few expansion pack games that actually still runs well on the high-res setting too, which is nice.

      The first Turok game definitely has a special place in my heart simply for being the first game in the series, and one of the first N64 games I owned.
      That being said, Rage Wars was by far the most fun game in the series.

    This game, Goldeneye, Forsaken, and Perfect Dark used to be weekend events, playing "round robin" 4 player splitscreen with friends for days, and nights, even entire weekends, fueled by caffeinated soda and junk food, back when I was in highschool! Luckily I was a part time karate and kickboxing instructor during the week to work off those calories after school.

    • @Dark_Jaguar
      @Dark_Jaguar 3 года назад

      Perfect Dark... I often set up "bunkers of death" in levels where a combination of laptop gun turrets, mined guns, and me constantly firing remote control missiles left me as a priority target holed up in some corner of the map somewhere.

    When I bought it, I remember it costing $15 at Kmart. I loved turok as a kid. When I saw it, I immediately asked my parents for it. For the first time ever, they did not hesitate to buy me a game. I remember getting home and feeling a little weird about it once I started playing. There was no epic storyline or anything. It wasn't until I started playing with my cousins that I started to see what this game had to offer. As a multiplayer game, it kicked all sorts of ass.

      Exactly! As a kid I was disapointed that there wasn't a solid campaign but for me the single player challenges became unusually so addicting. Then playing against my friends, big bro and my nephew, this was crazy good.

      I know the feel bro. This game was where nearly all of me and my buddy's free time went in 5th and 6th grade.
      I miss that friend... He moved away. And I got my own copy of the game sitting on my shelf to this day.

  • @CGCGCG91
    @CGCGCG91 4 года назад +3

    As a side note, this game is 100% canon.
    Both David Dienstber and Jeff Gomez consider it canon, as it's how Joshua Fireseed becomes worthy of the Light Burden when his ownership of it comes into question.
    Due to the time weirdness of the Lost Lands, the Campaigner is a pre-Turok 1 Campaigner - one before he was a cyborg.
    Side fact. The original plan for this game was to have an Acclaim/ Valiant crossover shooter. Using characters like Shadowman, XO MANOWAR, Bloodshot and others.

    Finally someone giving this game the praise it deserves!
    The best multiplayer on N64 wasn't Mario Kart or Smash Bros or Diddy Kong Racing. Not bloody Goldeneye with its weird analog stick controls and not Perfect Dark (although it had great multiplayer).
    It was THIS.FUCKING.GAME period.

    • @Vinnay94
      @Vinnay94 5 лет назад +1

      You do realize you can change the control scheme on Goldeneye. 1.2 controls is generally the best scheme because you would use the C buttons for move/strafe much like WASD and the stick for aiming.

    • @Vinnay94
      @Vinnay94 4 года назад

      @Simon Chase You can use the Dpad for strafe/move as well, it's just a bit harder to hit the A and B buttons with your right hand.

    LOVED this game as a kid and me, my brother and our cousins still play it during parties. Didn't care about a lack of story mode then and still don't. Nothing more satisfying than either getting the green circle lock on a CB or Inflator one-shot-fat-explosion while everyone keeps saying "don't watch my screen"

  • @garretteverett2613
    @garretteverett2613 7 лет назад +1

    Oh man, this brings back great memories. The terror and gore of the Chestburster gun, being a jerk with the freeze gun's secondary function, making turkey noises as you chased your friends around with your flappy raptor hands... I managed to unlock most of the alternate skins through the single player campaign (my favourite was the ice skin for the magmite), and then my sister saved over my file and put me back to square one. I was so frustrated that I didn't pick it up again. It was a great game though, the AI was challenging, the level design worked well for the most part, and the huge variety of weaponry made sure that you were never bored.

I recently decided to replay the game and without the expansion pak it really is ne of the blurriest games on the system., but if you have a full set of working N64 controllers and the expansion pak, it's still as much fun as it was back in the day. People can say about this game what they will, but if it wasn't for this game, I would never have taken an interest in the franchise and I wouldn't have loved the N64 as much as I do today. This is the only Turok game I ever played. I didn't have a Memory Card to save my progress on campaign mode (which was a bummer) but I played multiplayer with my friends and we had a total blast with it. I may just end up playing the game again, and finish the campaigns lol.

    That co-op bug was such a bummer. My friends and I tried so many things to get past it but nothing worked; taking out the rumble pack/memory card during the loading screen, blowing into the cartridge, unplugging-replugging in the controllers, and none of it worked lol

    I love this game! I just got done playing it! Controls are tight, graphics are solid, amazing varied weapons and tons of maps! Playing with bots is a huge bonus! Turok: Rage Wars is a true 64 gem and still a blast to play!

    I actually picked this up recently for a steal at $20 at the local second hand shop, I actually really like this game it brings the elements of turok 2 multiplayer and quake 2 at some points, really enjoyed the game overall

    You forgot to mention co-op!You could kill a whole Saturday with a friend playing through together unlocking weapons, levels and characters. One tactic we used to do was I'd use the secondary mode on the Freeze gun(insta freezing A.I) while my friend would Be ready with a charged hammer or shotgun, then one shoting them. Turok 2 multiplayer wasn't nearly as good as ragewars. Turok 3 in my opinion was perhaps overall the best turok multiplayer on n64.

    I'd love to see this be redone and rereleased on console and PC. The game while obviously a basic deathmatch game, felt unique in presentation and style. The loadout and pickup system was also kind of new at the time, and on game has really done it the way it did.

    Great game review! I got the game in 2000, still one of my favs! Sadly I have the black cartridge. When I first showed the game to a gaming buddy who stays on the cutting edge of gaming consoles (just last summer) he was very surprised how fast and flowing the game was considering the age

    As a console gamer who's bread and butter is bot deathmatches, I had no idea this game existed with bots. I was always of the opinion the Perfect dark had the best bots and customisation, The World is Not Enough the best multiplayer level design, and Goldeneye the best gun 'feel', but as you're a far more knowledgeable N64 gamer than I am, I'd be fascinated to see if you ever put out a personal top 5/top 10 N64 shooters list, especially if you compared the bot AI of the 64 games that included them.

    • @vmbo
      @vmbo 8 лет назад +1

      Rage Wars has the best bot AI. They move more human like and less in straight lines. This game also has some more mechanics like jumping and swimming. Look at the movement at 2:56 and the jumping around 3:18 . This game is really cheap these days and I recommend picking it up. It's a hidden gem on the N64.

    Rage Wars is easily my favorite Turok game on the N64 when I have company. Even if I'm playing Seeds of Evil and my friends stop by, I turn it off and put in Rage Wars because of how much better the Multiplayer is. The RAptor in Seeds of Evil is an under powered, slow mess. In Rage Wars, the Roster is much more balanced and the Raptor is a formidable walking meat shredder.

    One of my favorite 64 games. Managed to unlock all the cheats from months of playing. Ofc, the game was bugged and I could not finish the coop campaign due to that bug that was patched with the fixed version that you would have had to send in your original to swap it for. Still, I enjoyed the game and I wish I could still play it without issues, but emulators just arent the same as they can be buggy themselves.

    but unfortunately i had the cartrige with the bug and i could never pass the monkey part in story mode when i play multiplayer with my brother :(

    If I'm remembering this correctly, they released this the day after Christmas. I'd love to have been in the meeting when that release date was decided on. It's the reason I still haven't played this 15 years later. I was too busy getting stuck into Donkey Kong 64 after christmas and just forgot about this after a while.

      @@n64glennplant more or less 😅 the ratingboard USK / BPJM couldnt play videogames themselfs back in the day were "traumatised" from what they saw, thats why so many games got censored or banned in that area. They hired Kids for playing these games untill the early 2000s when a now gaming Jurnalist begun to work there and played every game. A few years ago he talked in a Video about the unban of Hitman about that. Mortal Kombat (1-3) and Wolfenstein are btw still banned here.
