I remember the Tumblr story from when I was younger. The story was the same but this version added detail and changed who stole the socks and what not. The added detail actually makes it sound more fake than the original.
Apparently it’s good for cats if they get used to each others scents and sounds before they physically meet. So people will keep the door closed first and let them sniff and listed on either side, then open the door just a bit and let them decide if they want to push it open further to meet each other, etc. Putting blankets in one cats room that the other laid on helps too.

My brother works in VFX and converts movies into 3D for theatres. I can confirm, they get clips to work on so last minute that they work very late into evenings.
