Our thoughts on the VW Multivan California Concept and what it means for campervan converters.
The Ford Volkswagen partnership is coming, but what will that mean. The Ford Transit Nugget by Westfalia has also been revealed.
Is this a complete change in the camper van market landscape?

The @Staycation Lifestyle van conversion is coming along.
I bought a VW Transporter T6 Kombi Highline van 140bhp diesel SWB with tailgate.
I have lots more to do though, I have a new electrical system, using Victron components and a Lithium LIFEPO4 battery, so I obviously need to install some power devices. I have a new sound system, with Focal speakers and ibus 2.1 amp, Playstation PS4, which will be removable, TV's on headrests.
Lots for me to look forward too and it would be nice to take you on the journey.
Vanlife for me is just beginning, it's a great adventure and I'm loving it. 😍
There are many great camper adventures to come

At the end of the day the primary need is a camper van. From what I have seen, the multivan and id buzz are all show and not the basic camper van functionality that most people want. Who needs a VW badge, when it doesn't provide you with what you desire. That is why I had a new Fiat Talento 170 bhp onyx lwb professionally converted to my chosen spec and saved £20k, providing me with more space, more storage, a better wider bed, proper front access fridge, heater controls next to the bed, where they should be and many, many advantages over a manufactured VW including a happy bank manager.
Personally I think the Multivan will be great for a specific market, likewise the Ford Nugget will be and also the much bigger Crafter/Man.
Each vehicle has a different buyer. Some like the help and support, belonging to a community.
One massive benefit of the Transporter over the Fiat will be proper crash testing. Would be interested to see the crash test video of your bed in the chassis. I imagine like a lot of other brands just take a bench tested bed and stick it in any van, not chassis tested. Having seen images of these failing, I will give that a miss thanks, would rather my family are safe.
Regarding your bank manager, he won’t be as happy when you sell and get another one, whereas a Transporter owner won’t have suffered the great depreciation in value.
Everyone makes their own choices. You can do exactly what anyone else can do in your van, which is great (apart from the VW community)
Same beaches, sunsets, bbq’s etc
What your tastes and needs are, differ to those of others.
Whatever anyone drives, just enjoy it. Life’s short
Your bank manager wont be happy when it comes to selling.
There is a reason that VW sell as many vans as they do, have done and will continue to do so.
Regarding your bandwidth mention in the section on the WiFi dongle, I've found if I drop the network down to 3G/2G I get a decent connection. Most peoples phones default to the best signal ie 5G/LTE so you end up with 1000s on them bands.
@@lovevans911I am that pleased with it that it will be many, many years before I get rid of it as I usually do with vehicles, therefore the loss will be small, meanwhile the £20k has bought me a second hand caravan as well, which I pull with the van ( good tow vehicle) also and thousands of £ extra for getaways. I didn't buy the van to sell to somebody else, I bought it to use for a long time.
@@stevezodiac491People get very sensitive if you don’t want a VW 😂 VW might be top of the pop top campervan market, but not in the motorhome one. Many of these seem to be on Fiat, Peugeot, Mercedes and even Ford platforms.
Interesting interview. The world is changing.
As an eTransit owner, I didn’t know if you are aware that commercial vans that are 100% battery powered get a 4.25ton exemption on a standard licence.
This is to enable large vans to be battery powered and still offer similar payloads to their diesel powered counterparts.
I’m not sure whether this licence dispensation applies to converted vans.
Found this on line
.
Is a normal driving licence all I need to drive an electric van?
If the electric or alternative fuel van is over 3.5 tonnes, there are some conditions you’ll need to adhere to in order to drive one with a normal Category B licence.
*Category B licence holders are not automatically allowed to drive electric vehicles heavier than 3.5 tonnes. They must first complete a minimum of five hours’ training behind the wheel of such a vehicle with a registered instructor.
The legislation also states that the van has to be driven for the purpose of transporting goods, only within the territory of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales - not including Northern Ireland). You’re also not permitted to tow a trailer*
Anyone caught driving an alternative fuel van with a standard Category B licence that hasn’t completed the training, or flouts any of the other rules, could be subject to a level three fine of £1,000
I just wish they would re introduced the swing open pair of side doors instead of a slider.
VW sells the twin-slider Beach Tour in AUS but supply is almost ended. Many were 4-Motion with diff-lock.
That’s right, just the Ocean they can’t. Never liked that aspect of it in the UK. Albeit as a driver I’m always opening that door
I can’t quite believe you’ve ripped the arms of Johnny 5 from short circuit to hold your mic’s 😢 … great video as always!
Don’t worry, I spoke to him last night and he said “I am alive” 😃
Thank you
The argument about residual values…..yes VW vans cost more to buy new, but when there are so many used VWs for sale…..many privately, where is the “residual price” based from? If it’s from Auction values, then that is a “real” benchmark, but I would argue that the difference between “Asking Price “ and what VW vans sell for is very different….with exceptions of Main Stealer Prices who must cover the “used van residual prices”.
Hmmmm………I think figures we are given for older vans is very skewed ( excepting the the pandemic period, which affected every manufacturer)
Not now allowed to Kip in your car at night, now some areas are looking at stopping some night van sleeping on mass
Fk them
Had a t2 viking conversion , seemed to have more room than my t4 .
Hmm, here in Germany the “Multivan” ia also known and referred to as the T7. Now although the T in Tx stands for transporter, the VW on the Ford Transit Custom basis is being referred to just as the VW Transporter. I expect the California to be on the T7 / Multivan basis, but I expect many conversions will be carried out on the Transporter. The Multivan is only being built as a fully glazed passenger vehicle, the panal van / commercial vehicle will be the Transporter. My friend actually has a T6.1 Multivan and a T7 Multivan, although the T7 is longer than the T6.1, the nose is longer and so the interior space is less. The Transporter will be a seperate vehicle to the Transt Custom, even more so thaan the Ford Ranger / VW Amarok and certainly more so than the Ford Transit Courier / VW Caddy. Although the T7 Transporter will be built on the same line in Tuerkie as the Transit Custom, at the showroom there will be a big difference.
Personally think the VW campervan is more than just a badge or brand. As you said there is a weight of history there, and I’m sure I’m not alone in that many of us have emotional connections to that history. My grandad always had VW campers, my uncle did, and so does my dad, not to mention all the trips and VW festivals. Safe to say, I want a VW campervan when I can finally afford something reliable. Conversions and all the options are all part of the fun, and for many, make them financially viable! VW would be mad to compromise all that. Can’t see it like. Let’s face it, if they make it too difficult for converters, they’ll ultimately lose sales and the VW magic would fade… doesn’t add up.
You are confusion Wi- Fi LAN with broadband and Cellular WAN. Capacity or cellular is based upon the backhaul so any mobile router will not provide any better through-put than your phone. You can use a M2M sim that is a multi-provider or dual sim to pick the best network for through-put.
I admit, i dont understand how the cellular networks operate. However help me out here. If my brand new mobile phone on the cellular network has a slow network coonection and cant load webpages, yet if i connect the same mobile phone to one of these mobile wifi devices on the same mobile network why are the speeds much faster and the web pages load with no problem? How does that work?
Think you needed to go down the lavalier clip mic route rather than those cumbersome Rodes..
That’s what I had, but with being omnidirectional they pic up too much surrounding sounds and also a lot of spill because we are close together. I’m a one man band, so this was my easiest option
i think the mics you've gone with sound great, nice job 👍@@StaycationLifestyle
@@StaycationLifestyle odd as most of them are designed exactly for capturing close up sounds and rejecting background. The Rodes do sound very good, I wonder if they’re sensitive enough to mount on mic stands above you out of frame? I’m a musician / audio engineer and the best solution I’ve found is to use shotgun directional mics that reject off axis but this comes at a price.
@@steverose3860 Ah, interesting. Send me an email and I will explain my thinking Staycationlifestyle@icloud.com
Good sound quality though 👍🏻🇬🇧
Hybrid 1.4 petrol , down grade towing capacity
Hmm 1 like others obviously don’t agree !
Think u need bigger mic stands 🤣
🤣 They are pretty large, but do a good job
RIP VW Campervan
Another reason why electric vehicles are going to fail. People won’t buy what they can’t drive for obvious reasons. There is no exemption that allows you to just hop in and drive a heavier vehicle without the correct license. It would be crazy to allow that. Vehicles over 4 tons aren’t the same as driving a car.
Buy an old Mercedes Vito Mk1 😉👍
No vw added tax .lol.
In Australia its only legal to parallel park in the same direction as the direction that side of the road is.
It used to be seen as bad practice to park on the wrong side.
Ford Nugget , Marco Polo (merc) Westfalia ,VW splitty and bay T4,5,6, etc Westfalia Get over the badge snobbery and buy the van that suits You and your needs as an individual, family. Has the person that counts the beans at VW ever spent any time in a camper van?😂😂😂😂
Absolutely, said exactly this a couple of videos ago. Everyone can enjoy the same lifestyle, go to the same beaches etc, whatever you drive.
Although the Marco Polo is actually pretty special inside (personal choice)
I agree plus the new Ford platform looks great.
I'd love to buy the BEV version of the panel van but its going to cost a fortune.
@@marks-0-0 You could buy a current T6.1 electric panel van extremely cheap. Range is poor, really poor.
I’m interested to see what engines will be available for the new collaboration. I think at present, the hybrid may be the best option 🤷🏻♂️
Sorry I missed that video
Dead right !
Dude what's with the microphones? You know you can get amazing audio from tiny clip on DJI wireless mics? Everyone tryna be Joe Rogan these days.
Not when 1 fails and you have to pay an audio engineer to rectify.
Plus they are omnidirectional so outdoors they pick up lots of surrounding sounds and mic bleed due to close proximity of the other mics.
What a bore
see VW and the salesman with the white shirt will put spin on it all day long ,if they are honest then you will go elswhere its up to them to speak to VW and demand what their customers want but they wont they will have stock they need to sell and they need a stream fo rthe sales figures
🤣 You do realise you CANT order from VW as a customer any longer. VW have closed the order book. Have a look on the configurator online. The only vehicles being built are those that have already been ordered. The colour comment was due to me wanting a Bay Leaf Green, one was ordered but VW pulled the order as no longer making the colour for the T6.1.
VW don’t seem to be allowing any factory options to be added as orders already in and the order book is closed.
Everybody can choose to go where they want, however the answer will most likely be the same, unless the dealer they speak to has a cancelled order matching the required spec.
There certainly is no spin on it from him, all these “type approved” converters want more vans, but there just aren’t available.
That said, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a special edition Transporter released by VW for the last ones off the production line.
thanks for coming back to me VW VW are so over priced now and you cannot get what you want so why bother
basic shape on them now outdated they can call them T whatever great vans for sure but old hat now @@StaycationLifestyle
