The dedication and effort that you put into your channel makes it the only NASCAR related channel that I subscribe to and yet I feel that I'm kept more up to date than if I watched ten other channels. Thank you Eric
It's always nice to see the history of sports, motorsports, and other things that have came so long. Safety and racing alone just has so much build on it, never gonna touch the surface again with a stock car at speed tho.
When Covid started, I began going on walks at every trail I could find, and this was one of the first that I did. Walking the track and seeing the history was one of the few highlights of early Covid, and I had forgotten about that until now
This was an excellent presentation.. love to see these historic sights along with the pictures of their hey day. I grew up in Mt.Clemens Michigan where we had a half mile and quarter mile. The track was well known in SE Michigan.. but was ultimately shut down and razed. The last I saw of the track I was home on leave from the Navy and visited the site, met with mountains of asphalt that was dug up... made me so sad. There is nothing left of a track I grew up going to, no visual reference other than I know where it used to be...
Great video! I live about 10 minutes away from Stone Mountain in Wilkes County. Glad you got to enjoy the race along with other sites Wilkes has to offer. Also Wilkes is where Lowe’s hardware originated. I’m one of those that loved nascar back in the day but over the years as nascar got away from its roots I quit watching. Once we got the news that it was coming back to north Wilkesboro it sparked my interest again. Enjoyed the video once again
Great video, captures the spirit of the NC mountains. I miss it. I was in NC for 27 years, in the mountains just south of Wilkes... Great vids of Wilkesboro too
I am at 2:20 and I am just gonna say, Excellent research sir. Not the first video I seen of this track, But I know you have done your research, And Thank You for that. This Is a great masterpiece you have created here, Cant wait to see the rest.
I love how this relic of an original NASCAR raceway has become a pretty nice hiking trail. If I lived in this area, I'd be out here every week just to enjoy the mostly unsullied nature the place has become, while also basking a bit in its racing history. You're very much reminding me of another favorite NASCAR creator on here, but I'll leave that for y'all to guess. Just know it's a very good association.
Not on the moonshine trail, but your audience might not be aware of Texas World Speedway and the history there. I think it's in the process of demolition now, but it's in your neighborhood.
Eric I was shocked to hear that North Carolina has a Stone Mountain State Park. I'm from Georgia and we also have a S.M.S.P. which also includes a large 800ft high ball of granite. It was no racetrack but a confederate monument. It has a beautiful carving on it. It's a breath taking place to see and visit you should check it out.
Great vid Eric packed with info and atmosphere. The old abandoned concrete grandstand reminds me of the remnants of ancient theatres like Delphi in Greece.
Eric, Great video. I watched Junior Johnson win s NASCAR Grand National race in 1961 at the Starkey Speedway near Roanoke, VA.....1/4-mile asphalt. He put on a show...passing slower cars on the outside....using a bump and run technique to pass the fast cars like Rex White and Jim Paschal.......not unlike the dominance of Kyle Larson at NW.
@@EricEstepp no trees unless near the river back then. Many people would climb those trees to watch races. My dad went there for many years as a kid. As my grandfather would be security there during the years it was open until his death a year before the track closed. He was prison warden at the prison in Hillsborough. Also we were down there for Dale Jr and Richard when they were doing the lost speedways episode. We were also part of the group that helped restore the track back in 2007. We helped refurbish the buildings that are on the property now.
They threw out nails welded together like they used to do to nobble the horses in the Middle Ages, and was also used in the Second World War too, to nobble the German vehicles when being chased .
Eric, was that dog a stray or someones that they just didnt have a leach on, and got ahead of them? Kinda on odd place to see a stray thats why I'm asking lol
this track was to become what talledega became but local pressure to not race on sunday so bill france sr went to spartanburg sc wanted to build daytona 2.0 there, there was no interest, no local, or government support so, he was flying over than abandoned airport in northern alabama an said this is were ill build my speedway an now we have talledega imagine if orange/occoneechee speedway had the support an spartanburg had worked with bill sr an nascar the schedule might look different today
the intro music sounds like something that would play over an incredible nascar finish in the 50s
Paddle faster. I hear banjo music.

I love this series eric honestly love the content lately
Thanks! Glad you're enjoying this series.
Best show so far. Love the information packed normal videos,,, but this one was the best so far!!
I totally agree
I’m a fan of all sports, but NASCAR definitely has the coolest history of any sport out there.

Early Covid was a simple time
Next all star race Occoneechee, let’s run in between trees, no walls, could end up in the river. Make a great race.
The Moonshine Oval!! I bet the ghost of Bob Flock *still* drives it, too!
Awww I hope that dog wasn't lost up there :(
Awesome video, Eric!!
His owners were right behind him haha

I live in hillsborough NC regularly going to that track walking it regularly awesome to see you there
A lot of awesome waterfalls out in the area. I work about 77 miles from the track. Make a trip to grandfather mountain.

I've hiked that Stone Mountain trail... i pulled muscles in both of my legs at the top of that rock. 😂 it was a fun way down.

I drove by this track for years about a quarter of a mile away on US 70 and never knew it was there until recently
Nice little history lesson Eric; thanks..
4:18 imagine you’re just casually strolling through the trail and you see Eric filming himself song this 😂
I remember that track from lost speedways with dale jr like u aaid Eric and I did watch slapshoes video on it as well
That's Awesome !!

Keep up the great work! Been on the ride for awhile. Best nascar content on the web.
Looks like we are going to have to nominate you for the hall of fame! Keep up the good work!
Dude, all of those cars you found, you should take some and fix them up! Those cars are probably worth a lot of money, those are 1st gen NASCARs!
Thanks Eric, that was fun
This is a great video!! Love the history videos on racing and the tracks that once were.
For my 11th birthday my parents took me to Kentucky speedway race. It’s sad to see Kentucky speedway get abandoned
My dad attended his first two Nascar races there back in 55 and 56. He says that the second race was more of a dust bowl than a race.
Great vid Eric packed with info and atmosphere. The old abandoned concrete grandstand reminds me of the remnants of ancient theatres like Delphi in Greece.

All those trees wouldn't have been there before the track closed.
Wow...on my bucket list
Theres a great song called down that occehenne
Legit grew up in Hillsborough about ten mins away from Occoneechee Speedway.
Nicely done Eric! Great work… Love it!
You should do a series of this old abandoned NASCAR tracks
Would love to see another angle shot of you running and attempting to cross the finish line on the front straight away 😂😂😂
Hopefully you made a stop in at Bowman Gray Stadium while you were here in NC
8:23 was that good doggo a stray? Was it off-leash? Was there an owner not far behind it? I must know the lore!
Holy Smoly!
Cool video Eric Estepp
Cool video...I enjoyed it!
Seen a video where they said they dumped left over mash o the N.Wilkesboro track. Better then brick like Indy.
You are the Rick Steeves of NASCAR
8:23 What da dog doin?
I'm willing to bet that a lot of those trees weren't there when the track was being used for cars.
There definitely weren't many (or any) on the infield back then.
