NASCAR has been around for so long, that it’s hard to remember where it even came from. How did one of America’s biggest motorsports start? Well it turns out, the story is a little more...illegal...than you might think! This is how moonshine created NASCAR!
Watch the NASCAR Championship Race this Sunday live on NBC at 3 pm ET!
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

Donut Media is at the center of digital media for the next generation of automotive and motorsports enthusiasts. We are drivers, drifters, and car enthusiasts who love to tell stories.
My grandfather was a runner on a smaller scale. Had a 46 ford that hed swap parts out of like nobodies business. Damn near could build a whole other car with the amount of part he had. It was hard to pull him away from watching NASCAR He passed about a year and a half ago. While he never went out of his way in his later years to go out and buy another 46 he'd always talk about wanting to drive one again. He never got to. Later this year I bought my 92 miata that I plan on making into a drift car with whatever spare money I have with my father. Just a few weeks later my dad and I are changing the oil when he says "I wanna show you something later, dont get jealous" We go driving and we stop in front of this house I've never been to. A older man comes out and shakes my hand and invites us back into his shop. He talks about this car he has all of the original parts for, pictures, parts books, manuals, paperwork. I look at my dad and ask what hes getting from this man, they both smile at each other. They take me to the car and pull the cover off. A deep red wine red 46 ford coupe with the flat head v8, all original just like my grandfather used to drive back in the day. While I'm sad we couldn't have found this car before my grandfather passes I mutter to my dad "Dont you ever let this car go, you need money you come to me first" I know at the end of the day my dad will make his own decision about what to do with the car. I'm just hoping to drive it like my grandfather once did.
If that is your grandfather's old Ford, I'd daily it.
Stories like this are my favorite

I wish Nascar was still STOCK cars. It would make it so much more interesting to watch. Instead they have shells that somewhat resemble a car that a manufacturer has put out
Actually they don't really even resemble the manufacturers anymore if you ask me. But I couldn't agree with you more apart from that.
Aaron Eaton
I think it should be perfectly stock cars with no pushrod requirements or turbo prohibitions but instead a homologation requirement like WRC. That would be awesome to see Corvettes, GT40’s and Hellcats duking it out with LFA’s, GTR’s and NSX’s!!!
@Antares_1_ yeah back in the day some cars just ruled the field like the charger daytona. But it would be nice to see actual stock cars and not this engine with a frame and plastic we have right now
Nick Nieberg They use the same engine for every car, the technics that they have to use are not that complicate and the tracks are just ovals .-.
It is safety requirements now. As Dale Jr. Said on JRE "stock cars are safer going 225 mph than a production car going 85mph." I will take the safety of drivers over top of car looks any day.
Rubber failed Pumphrey's Dad too

Do you consider the Toyota MR2 to be a kei-car?
@@negativeindustrial no its too large if you compare it to kei-cars like Honda Beat or Daihatsu Copen.
Tomi Vuori chrysler k-cars are better

I want red dead 3 to be about the start of nascar

Oh hi
This meme is as cancerous as a dead chemo patient.
Nolan exposing all of the Donut Media's rides!!! XD
Little early to consider Ryan Blaney in the legendary talk Nolan. Get your stuff together! His podcast, Glass Case of Emotion, is really good though.
Nascar is the rock and roll of motorsport
What's drag racing?
your right it is the rock and roll of motorsport. It dropped like a rock and cant get it to start from a roll.
If it's nascar week we better get an up to speed on Hudson
So pumped for NASCAR week!
Donut: Here’s a video on how the history of NASCAR.
Me: I’ll be the judge of that.
Yeah, 'checkered' past... fighting against ridiculous government over reach into citizens personal lives. That's not outlaw, *_that's the real spirit of America._*
Lol. Wars cost tax money, and religious idiots want you to live like them. Tax alcohol and stop alcohol cause Jesus says so. *THAT'S* the spirit of America.
@@HazeGreyAndUnderway You left-wing Chicom Vote Stealers shut up!

So you're saying NASCAR was founded on the principle of "Fuck the police"?

Fun fact 75% off alcohal in the United states during prohibition came through Detroit, with people driving over the frozen Detroit River to Canada. Purple Gang ran Prohibition
This past weekend I went to my first nascar race, built my first ar15, and bought my first shotgun. MURICA
Great job as always. NASCAR has come a long way for sure.
Man, I hope Truex does well, been watching him since the Busch series back when he got the '04 & '05 Championships.
I’d love them to make a second channel, specifically about other vehicles. Planes etc. amazing teaching style.

ECHO ROBERTS I've got a few videos of some races at Texas Motor Speedway on my channel if you'd like to see.
Tbh, this kinda was an Up To Speed, if you think about it. Just with Nolan instead of Pumphrey
This... this video is basically what you want... are you watching it?
Was hooked on NASCAR immediately when we saw the Allison brothers fighting with Cale Yarborough right there on TV... been a fan ever since : ]
I’m keen for the NASCAR content. I’m just getting into NASCAR now and I’d love to learn more.
These are one of these things nobody outside of the US understands.
What's there to not understand? You drive around a big oval turning left. Do that for some time and bam, you win.
This should be a movie!!!
And it’s not like NASCAR denies this history. I went to the Hall of Fame at Charlotte during Heroescon and they were proud to put their moonshine runner origins up and center!
A car racing series with origins in avoiding the government. The NASCAR is the most American sport ever.
Love how every episode goes through a series of thumbnail changes
Founder Bill France deserves a biopic. Seriously. 😂😂😂
make a video on the canam series. Would be awesome.
Learning more about the revolutionary period than in my us history class
Do it for Dale
Alright some NASCAR action for championship weekend

I love this story
I wrote a 20 page paper about this for my IB Diploma. This makes me hyped
Can they please bring the STOCK back in STOCK car racing?
Fichtenschweif They were never stock. It’s also for the safety of the drivers.
OH MY GOD BOOTLEGGER WERE SO LIT. Drive fast on passes with such cars
Hey random person scrolling down the comments..
You have amazing creative potential. Have a wonderful day :)
This whole story could be a movie. A nice trilogy following a guy from a moonshining family from moonshiners, to runner to NASCAR racer.
Ryan Balney isn't a legend tho (yet) but his father is. Also organized races on Daytona beach were a bit of info that was missed, but still a good video.
Great history lesson n fun, thanks
I love this show
Tell me more about that "flipflop" Dakota

3:55 That reminds me of a very known anime series.
Hey you guys should do a video on cars people own on donut media and why you guys chose them. Maybe even see who is the best driver on donut media.

Awesome video. You are everyone's favorite son. Big thumbs up to your editor/s
I'm glad that I not only got a history lesson on nascar, but also moonshine itself.
Taxation is theft.
Long live bootleg shine!
Taxation is completely reasonable to provide countless essential services in any community.
Long live govt regulations and quality control for breweries/distilleries so you'll always be sure that you wont consume tainted alcohol when drinking products from licensed manufacturers.
If the crown approves, may I please consume this watered down swill that has guaranteed a portion of it's profit to the crown's purse?
@@stymiesnerdly771 Not the governments fault that you aren't willing to pay for a higher quality product. In fact they'd love you to pay more, it only means they get more from excise taxes. It's the breweries/distilleries trying to cut costs/corners resulting in shitty products that's to blame, not the government and its taxes. You'll pay those taxes whether or not you're buying top dollar whisky or the cheapest liquor known to man, getting rid of them will make every alcoholic product cheaper by the exact same relative amount.
@@coenijn lol as if the government regulating anything makes it a "higher quality product" consumer demand and competition does that not regulation. taxation is purely theft and nothing else.
@@az_3kgt714 I never said anything of the sort. Read again. All Government regulation does (as far as alcohol goes) is set a baseline of the absolute lowest standards your product has to adhere to in order to be able to be sold legally. Consumer demand and competition don't do a goddamn thing when those who buy the cheapest products (aka meeting minimal standards) are also the ones buying most of it (aka alcoholics). If government regulation didn't exist there'd be no barrier to legally produce and sell alcoholic produce with methanol in it, you'd have to hope for the best that the manufacturer of your choice is honest. But that is way too complicated to deal with in everyday life.
Nobody has an HPLC machine in their house to check the methanol content in their liquor. You don't have the means or time to test alcoholic beverages on whether they're lethal and in an unregulated market you cannot be sure which reviewing website or QC source to trust. Much better to have a publicly funded third party (aka govt) set standards and hold the manufacturers to them. It's almost like its in the best interest of the consumer that regulations exist on minimal QC standards for many products, especially those meant for human consumption. You also assume that demand is elastic but production is not, which is bullshit. Manufacturers can easily crank up their production volume.
"Taxation is theft" is honestly one of the most cheesy, outdated and childish statements of this decade. Yeah I get it you don't like taxes, as do I, but they're an inevitable part of life in order to safeguard the quality of life all of us enjoy. Your effective tax rate has already lowered significantly since the 1980's (if American), and it gets more dramatic the richer you are.
Sponsored by NBC for this Ill take it!
I love this show! Is fun and you learn stuff. Good job.
My step grandpa was a mechanic during the moonshine era he would modify the moonshiners cars to be faster than the police then he would modify the polices cars to be faster than the moonshiners
NASCAR was born on my birthday
I learn more from Wheel House on this channel than the others
Can u do a wheel house vid on street racing
Up to speed on James' Vdub!
Y’all forgot two famous moonshine states North Carolina and Georgia!!!!

I'd love a vid on history of the rules and regulations in NASCAR to see what they started like and how they turned into fiberglass shells on full race chassis
fiberglass? No 😂😂😂 Steel and Carbon Fibre (now)
Literally been waiting for this video lol
James' car originally belong to Jamie Orr. Famous Volkswagen builder and owner of Orchid Euro LLC
Also make a video who invented the speed bump
My town used to have a stock car track it was torn up in 1959 because Watkins glen took all the business away
Do a video on Packard Bell
So when is there gonna be a Donut Media X Hoonigans? Would be a sick af collab my dude
Do a video on super steam cars(: .
Imagine if NASCAR cars are still stock: American's would have all this sick homologation cars rolling of the production line and into the streets!
Now made wheelhouse on f1, wec, or dakar please!
It's like you've read my mind. I was going to suggest this.
History time again :D
Hell yeah!
Do an up to speed on that Flip Flop truck! Also, I feel like much of this story was already told in a previous Donut video, but I can't remember which one.
How bout a episode of chevy Z series covering from the first Z to all the Z's ever to current Z products
It's always struck me as odd that moonshiners created oval track NASCAR instead of moving more towards rally. As you said, the mechanics were basically early rally mechanics and they did a lot of what amounted to rally cross, going from the dirt mountain trails to back country roads on their runs.
Something similar to the basic concept of old school DTM would fit the original idea of moonshine running much better than oval racing.
