these are deliberate for dramatic purposes.. it is extremely common to use "gasps" in order to make sound more dramatic especially in opera.. you dont judge the easiness of the sound by the "gasps" but by the quality of the sound column. When a singer is trying very hard the sound column gets affected and multiple sound flaws appear (like unsteadiness, unintentional interruptions, slipping off tune).. none of these appear in Matthew's singing.. he is a Phenomenally good singer

i was privileged enough to see muse in tucson arizona for only 30 bucks at an annual festival here. bar none the best of hundreds of concerts i saw through my teens and 20's. the energy of everybody clapping and singing to songs like starlight is something that cant be emulated or surpassed. truly the most amazing experience of my life. thank you muse! i would pay any amount of money to see another one of these shows.

This live performance of Starlight is the best one I've ever watched, the Reading Festival 2011 version second to this one. The song is being played at a lower octave than the studio recording, and makes the best balance between pitch to create the most harmonius sound. Beautiful.
