@Ben Woodcock as with so many types of animals, coyotes are in residential areas due to human expansion into the animals' home territories. The animals become displaced because their food supply is gone, their dens are gone, etc. Box turtles in Florida are on the protected list for that very reason: loss is habitat. There are actions that can be taken to resolve the problem with coyotes, without harming the animals, but for some reason, no one is doing anything.

@@leroy420b As humans encroach on their territories, the coyotes are pushed into other areas. Climates evolve and life evolves with it, or adapts to it. Just as humans expanded out from our original home areas, wildlife does too. Coyotes are NOT an invasive species; they don't read maps and understand state boundaries. They live on our continent and will go where they need to go, to survive, as their original home range is changed and taken from them. I am not disagreeing that they can be a problem. Rabies is a concern, as are attacks on pets. But we need to address this humanely. We caused the problem. It is our responsibility to resolve it. Humanely.

These coyotes can be ruthless. If your dog is small enough they'll come into your backyard and snatch your dog up. Problem with coyotes in some places is they're integrated with life where humans are. They'll keep away if you're big enough, but if you're a child you wont be safe. I live in Arizona and see them regularly, and there's some cases of coyotes killing children. A lot of cases of them killing small pets.

I saw something moving about a mile below, moving like a cat. It was a coyote. I lost track of it as it moved closer and around the hilltop I was sitting on. Some time later on in that night here was that coyote sitting at my feet resting for about 5 minutes as I sat there with my feet crossed and my rifle across my lap. We just sat there together not afraid of each other at all. No talking just being there together. After what seemed like a very long time (5 minutes) the rested coyote got up and went back to hunting for its meal. That coyote knew where I was from a mile away, the whole time I sat up there. Shooting it might have been the right thing to do. One good shot to the head or heart, so it is humanely done. Depends on several factors. The bottom line is that humans are taking over lands that are home to a wide variety of wildlife. Not just coyotes. It includes turtles, tortoises, birds, lizards, plants, wild pigs, wild cats, snakes, etc. There are people who want to kill every shark. Kill all the snakes and you will be inundated with rats and mice (and who knows what viruses). We need to control human population and be more conscious of where and how we build. All of you ridiculing animal lovers and environmentalists should study more biology and environmental science.

How many were on the red list? Even if you aren't getting gifts, there's a good chance she's still doing it.

I certainly would have been scared as hell to try and catch him myself so calling animal control is exactly what needed to be done. If the animal would have been aggressive or foaming at the mouth, then that would have been worse. Chayotes do not really carry diseases like most people think. They can catch rabies when they attach animals who have rabies or vise versa. The animal should have been safely released and end of story. That is what 98% of us would have done. They come into the edge of the city and kill peoples small dogs and cats. They really become a problem and the population does need to be regulated somewhat hence why people kill them so much. Where I live they are considered a nuisance animal and you can kill as many as you can without a license. The situation was handled perfectly. My guess is the crybabies are whining because tje guy took a picture of himself next to it or because he threw it in a cage. He took proper precautions as far as I could see. My friend once tried to pet and play with a coyote that was hanging around our back woods area. It showed up right when we started grilling food on the grill. He tossed it a couple things to eat, but then he tried to get too close and it bit down on my friend's hand. He had to go the hospital and get stitches and shots and had to take medication for it. It was bleeding very badly plus 3 of his fingers were broken. There is a reason they use the loop bar and it is very safe. Canines get the loop around their necks and animals such as raccoons or possums or badgers get the loop around their body/torso area. It's a very humane practice and I'm sure the coyote was not released too far from where it knew where to find food. The coyote that chomped on my friend's hand was taken away because of my friend's mistake being careless. That was not fair, but this situation was completely done right. Do not worry what ridiculous people have to say.

It wasn’t the best analogy but he was talking off the cuff and sometimes we all sometimes can’t find the best scenario to communicate clearly what we are trying to say. As much as I hate to see any animal scared and fighting for its life, those slip poles are the safest for the animal and the people. And it’s only used long enough to get the dog in the crate. I think all the haters wouldn’t survive very long in the wild. I see too many animal lovers getting mauled by their own dogs and even killed so I would not give any time worrying about their ignorance to moving a wild animal out of town and hopefully a safer area. You did the absolute right thing by calling animal control in this situation. They're goal is to remedy the situation WITHOUT harming the animal whenever possible, and they have the resources and training to handle these things. The coyote was released far away from people and will hopefully stay away from civilization after this incident, seeing how afraid it was. On a different note, while they are a nuisance in a lot of areas and I would also choose my own pets over the coyote, it's not the coyotes' faults that it's become this way. People have been encroaching on their territory for many years and they have been able to adapt around us, even if it's at our detriment. They're just doing what they have to...

I DO NOT RECOMMEND OTHERS DOING WHAT I DID. AT ALL. EVER.
Firstly coydogs don’t attack humans. Unless they are sick with something lethal. They are skittish. I had one approach me after being hit by a car. I got snapped at once when trying to see what injuries were had. Bad shattered back leg. And totally dislocated hip. but was never bitten. It was like a kid screaming ouch. Or a husky yell-chomping. I never moved my hand. That little guy was way above my medical tools and abilities. Felt lot me as if a human was approaching me for comfort after a bad breakup. Poor thing was doing so well till I had to call some help. Those walkies are totally terrifying for them. Taken to a vet hospital, patched up. I didn’t personally follow after the surgery. But I was told Sent to a recovery enclosure, several months later along with some good food and meds, was released into a bordering location to where he was found.
They have a way of communication that freaks people out, I have found. And if they ACCEPT YOU AND LIKE YOU, THEY WILL STILL SNARL AT YOU AND GUARD THEIR FOOD AS WELL AS ESTABLISH PACK RANKING AGAIN TO INCLUDE YOU. crazy smart. Very guarded. And farrrr smarter than any dog or hybrid that we have domesticated. They don’t make good pets. And the cornered dog is seeking shelter, not at all hunting for children, or posing a danger. Unless you approach it. I have pet a bunch of them and got a beautiful gift to see a new and young mom approach me with a disobedient and flailing fur all of a pup in her mouth. She saw me across the entire lake, looked at me, and proceeded cautiously over rocky terrain and brambles towards me. Only she knows why. She wasn’t hurt. Pup looked spunky and perfect. I guess she was curious. The pup, Which she left in a pile of leaves about five feet from where I stood, was only relinquished after she saw I had A HUGE STASH OF REAL JERKY. no add-ins, just meat. I HAVE YET TO MEET A COYDOG THAT DIDN’T PANIC AFTER BEING GIVEN FOOD, THINKING I WAS ABOUT TO STEAL IT FOR MY SELF. SO SHE DID A QUICK LIP LIFT AND GAVE ME THE FACE OF A YOUNG LAD WHO JUST ACCIDENTALLY STROLLED INTO A STRIP CLUB. the tail went and the fur settled and the led lowered. ....and then the baby started freaking out after somehow getting wet. So she freaked out again.
But for that time, i just watched in childlike awe at this ... mom. I realized just how small of a creature I truly am to have assumed that I was above everything in my environment. I felt I had gotten it wrong. I was supposed to respect this world and all therein, not to RULE OVER IT like a crazed celebrity on meth. Animals have always shown me that energy and compassionate understanding transcends all differences and languages. They read humans swiftly and correctly most of the time, And they are right to be cautious. Look at us.
Thing is coyotes here are scary. I’m about 120 pounds and a female. Crouching down her eye level was above mine. Giving you a better grasp of this populations individual size. HERE THEY ARE MASSIVE. LIKE. EASILY WOLF SIZED. With plenty to eat here in UPSTATE NEW YORK. And I was fishing at the time. (With a cast net. And a bucket. Just for kicks. And aquatic plants to cultivate.). I slowly and quietly left what I had for the young mom on the big rock I sat on , and walked home.
Another wild dog looking like a wolf was sprayed with a shot gun. Actually approached me. My diagnostic skills were ok for field patching but not much else. So she was patched up and (as a heard) released after a week or two. And again. To give you an idea. This thing could have ripped my face off and it didn’t. Because unlike people, it understood that a creature approaches and is approached for a reason. As as long as they are calm, and are good and don’t smell “sketchy” they aren’t a target. They are an asset. Annnnd it knew I don’t have any physical chance of winning a fight if shit really hit the fan. No claws, no eagle vision, gallons, wings, killing jaws or skills. I got a few balls? out with evident pain in the poor things face. Nothing to stop infection or help with pain, so I stopped. So I decided to call ONE person to help. That I knew was light footed, quiet, and calm.
I have heard many stories like this. From the former USSR, where I come from. Many many stories like this.
When people wonder how wolves became dogs, I don’t. I know something like this happened.
And I know you’re only trying to do right by those people in your area, and to protect the children and pets you value. I don’t blame you. And before I had any experience, I would have done the same thing and not cared about the coydog at all. But that was because i had literally never heard a single positive thing. They are pests, dangerous, vicious, rabid, destructive, wild mindless killers that are over populating and destructive to thee ecosystem. All tidbits from people...... with no damned idea as to how valuable these guys are, their capacity of love, emotion and understanding. Their behaviors were alien and threatening and so the nonsense keeps on being shared and believed.
Probably because NO ONE EVER HAD ANY INSTANCES OF THESE ANIMALS THAT WERE POSITIVE. so this is why I shared. Hopefully you got something out of this comment, and maybe, JUST MAYBE, if presented with the same situation, with euthanasia as the outcome, you will either reconsider your options, have a greater understanding of these guys, and even seek alternate services (animal sanctuaries, etc.). I hope one day you find greater value in all lives, regardless of conventional wisdom. Maybe you’ll get to have an encounter of your own. Hopefully a bit less ..... dangerous. If nothing else, maybe if you do hear of one dying, this could tug on your heart just enough for you to pause for a moment to reflect and to relate to these little wild oddball neighbors of ours, along with the other lives that are earths co-inheritors.
This animals eyes and expression say far more than my comment ever could, and I don’t think anyone who genuinely seeks a greater empathic ability and genuine understanding would be able to say otherwise.
I hope you find greater beauty, dear friend.
Peace and love to you always and all ways,
As well as to anyone having taken the time to read this,
    Thank you.
    AJ and friends

I'm a huge animal lover and I didn't see any abuse being done to it. You did absolutely nothing wrong. I lost a pet to a coyote attack and understand completely the dangers that they pose but I still don't want to see them harmed. The only harm that that coyote endured would have been to his hearing because your dog was yelling at it in such close proximity to its ears, lol! But seriously! This coyote suffered no harm by the animal control officer.

You can clearly see in the original video this man loves animals and did his best to make sure the best situation happened. He could have just hit the coyote as he was completely still and he asks what will happen to him and seemed legitimately worried. Good job man and god bless you I hope more people in the world were like you

People are too quick kill carnivorous animals to solve their disputes. Most of those animals are important for the local ecosystems, and killing too many too quickly can cause all sorts of ecological problems, including deer overpopulation. I’m not saying people don’t have a right to look after their safety, but I feel some attempt at understanding or coexistence, or at least using no lethal means of removing them, could benefit people and the environment as a whole.
Having lived for years in Canada, I became aware of a population of coyotes that lives in north western Calgary in Alberta, Canada and they almost never attack humans or pets. They are more than happy to eat the local Jack rabbits instead. Coyotes aren’t AS dangerous as long as there is plenty of local game for them to eat, AND as long as you take the necessary the precautions and actions to diffuse or avoid conflict.

Coyotes are menaces. And they're growing in number in urban areas. Screw animal rights. They pose a huge danger to pets, children and people in general. Those who think they should be protected need therapy. Get an IQ !

Susie Arviso They shouldn’t be protected but they should be put down either. They should be released into the wild away from civilisation in their own habitat so that the food chain can continue as normal. We as humans are destroying their habitat and so of course they are moving to urban areas because they have nowhere else to go and nothing else to eat.If its anyone’s fault it’s our own and so it isn’t the Coyotes fault at all. And plus why the hell would you want to live near where Cayotes are living anyway, especially if you have children and pets.

I am an extreme animal lover and proactive in wildlife preservation, and you did the right thing. I KNOW we as humans have encroached on THEIR home, but, what's done is done and the best and most humane way to deal with an animal like that is to remove it from populated areas and release it. Thank you for respecting the animal.

Bro I once had a baby fox almost pounce on my cat. Since it was a fox and a baby one at that, I just held my cat and went indoors so my cat didn't run off and just in case. However, I've seen Coyotes through my old elementary windows and they were biting each other and stuff. Can't imagine them being friendly with my cat if they got their paws on him lol. You did the best thing, especially cuz that Coyote was scared and stayed still in that corner. The animal control guy who took it was ruthless when bringing him in which isn't his fault, he said he hadn't seen one in that area before so he was just being cautious and made sure the Coyote didn't go wild, with the thing he used of course. And it's good that the Coyote was released into the wild rather than be killed off but it's totally understandable if they did.

No need to explain. The coyote is being relocate away from the community and being released far way to the wild and plus it was captured without harm. You did everything what a dog owner would do. Job well done👍🐶
