I really like how Rosetti used juxtaposition to showcase the class differences of that time. It adds depth to the story and in most productions the class differences between Carmen, Escamillo and José are implied at best.
And the costumes help too. Escamillo and his entourage-the highest class- are all wearing black and white, the soldiers in dark gray, and everyone else wearing brownish tones
Ruggiero Raimondi is fantastic in this role. Expressive, vocally agile. The vocal expression is dynamic. He is has a beautiful timbre. He fits the role. Truly sublime.

We saw CARMEN in Santa Fe this July. Absolutely dreadful. The Toreador was portrayed as a bumbling drunk. Very poorly conceived and produced opera.
